BUSH TO SKIP RNC?.... Under the circumstances, John McCain would probably be thrilled if George W. Bush didn't show up at the Republican National Convention. For that matter, Bush would probably be thrilled if he got a second chance to respond to a hurricane hitting the Gulf Coast, without screwing it up this time.

They might both get their wish.

The president is, of course, scheduled to speak on Monday (Labor Day) at the convention, right around the time Tropical Storm Gustav, which is expected to become a hurricane, hits the Gulf Coast. Fox News' Bret Baier reported this morning, "We're told, by the White House, there are conversations underway about [the] schedule, and whether [Bush] will, in fact, speak on Monday. They are meeting behind closed doors about the response, first of all -- they have FEMA Director David Paulison already active down there -- and the administration obviously very sensitive to this. But if this hurricane rolls in, and the timing is the same, you could see the president possibly not speak on Monday night. It's something that both the White House and the RNC are working on right now."

I haven't seen this reported elsewhere, but it's probably fair to say Fox News' contacts within the White House are pretty good.

Stay tuned.

Well, timing is everything! Send John McCain, he knows how to win.. er, hurricanes? When blowhards collide.

Considering the fact that the neocon evangelicals were praying for torrential rain to wash out Obamas convention, it is ironic that there would be a hurricane during the Repubs convention.

I'm surprised at you, Mr. Benen. (Do we call you "PA" now?)

What makes you think Bush wouldn't protect the people of New Orleans the second time around?

Most of the folks he didn't care about don't live there anymore.

You know what I think would be funny? If Bush stayed home on Monday, Gustav blew over or fizzled out, and Bush then called McCain on Tuesday and said: "I'm ready for my close-up, Mr. McCain!"

I obviously wish those affected by the hurricane all the best, of course, but damn if I don't think it just a little funny that mother nature has a liberal bias and an ironic sense of humor.

Truly, those affected will be better off without the great bungler compounding the problem.

As much as I would love to see Bush screw up again, I hope he doesn't screw New Orleans again. I've been seeing a lot of jokes around about the rain the evangelicals called for and such being destined for New Orleans, and it's funny when you're only thinking about the consequences for Bush. But it is verging on pathological insensitivity in terms of consequences for New Orleans. Don't forget that Certain Persons said New Orleans was suffering the wrath of God for sinfulness during Katrina. Just something to keep in mind....

If there is indeed a hurricane in New Orleans, I don't see how the Republicans can get away with their plans for the convention. I would also suggest that a smart thing for Obama to do, both politically, and as a really powerful gesture, would be to start emailing campaign volunteers to get ready to head out the Gulf to help.

He's got an army of supporters. It would be nice to see him use them for something more than getting elected.

So they think having him be The Hero-Presidink On The Case is better optics than having him blithering and blathering in St Paul if the hurricane hits? They might be right, but only marginally. There'll be no way for even our in-the-tank CorpMedia to cover it without reference to the cock-up he made of That Other Hurricane. Better to be seen trying to do something about this one rather than, ahem, eating cake again with McCain, this time in St Paul. But the Katrina connection will loom all over it no matter what he tries to do. I think it's a lose-lose, the only question is which is the lesser of to weevils (apologies to Patrick O'Brian).

And yeah, JS, I thought of that little irony too. All the reports for tonight's speech in Denver are for mild temps and clear skies.

People that would pray for GOD to harm his children dont serve GOD. They may as well become Satan worshippers if they allow hate to weigh down their hearts and wish for harm to come to others.

Obama speaks on the 45th anniversary of I Have a Dream. Bush speaks on the third anniversary of I Had a Nightmare.

Bush called FEMA director David Paulison and ordered him to pre-position critical supplies and gear like high powered spotlights so the the presnit would be prepared for his powerfully staged photo-op.

Heckuva job Paulie!

McCain stated that there was no way he was going to allow the Louisiana/Minnesota border to be violated unless it was by his good friends the Georgians.

I'm looking forward to seeing just how much our fearless leader is talked about at the Convention. I have a feeling it will feel a little bit Harry Potter -- He Who Must Not Be Named....

Posted by: jibeaux on August 28, 2008 at 2:00 PM | PERMALINK

My sources tell me that Mike "Heckuva Job" is being taken out of mothball storage and will be dispatched to Rhode Island or Guam to coordinate handle hurricane relief efforts.

Looks like Bush has this under control.

Political concerns aside, the prospect of hurricane Gustav hitting New Orleans is truly frightening.

Recall that when Katrina entered the Gulf it had diminished considerably as it passed over Florida, but then regenerated into a monstrously huge category 5 hurricane, fueled by the abnormally warm waters of the Gulf.

New Orleans is today no better prepared to withstand a direct hit from a category 5 hurricane than it was three years ago.

As much as I love the irony, I think it's a way to keep the worst president in history (R) from showing his extremely unpopular face at the GOP convention.

Remember, some Dems are paying big bucks to get pics of TWPIH (R) with their local Congresscritter so they can be used against that critter during reelection.

While it is most definitely poetic justice to that asswipe over at Focus on The Family (gag, ack, barf) for praying for rain, "not just rain, torrential rain, rain so you can't walk rain" (nevermind that there will be 75k people in there that he is basically wishing would die or become egregiously injured (how's them thar Christian values working out for ya, hmmm?), it let's the GOP off the hook for having a reason that their own personal WPIH (R) not show up at their own convention.

Gustav doesn't give McSame a do-over. It ties him to the failed Bush presidendy and recalls those pictures of Bush and McCain posing with a birthday cake while New Orleans drowned.

More like Instant Karma for McSame and more misery for the Gulf.

This is just TOO delicious. God not only hates Republicans, he's got a great sense of humor about it....

I do feel sorry for the people of New Orleans. But getting the Republicans out of the White House is the best help they could get.

Can you see the Democratic counter-programming? They'll all be standing in knee-deep water in New Orleans while the Republicans carry on their merry bashing from plush hotels in Minnesota. They could issues an all-points "Bush Search" trying to ferret out the missing President. This is better than Obama's visit the troops dilemma: Show up in Minnesota, he's "heck-of-a-slacker" Bush. Show up in New Orleans, he's a party embarrassment too radioactive to be seen with the candidate. Go to both, he's a camera-hungry opportunist reminding everyone about Katrina and why they hate the Republican party. Great job, God!

Though obviously the wild ironies make my cynical soul chortle, I'm with PJ -- as one who has friends in New Orleans; whose wife once called it home -- we should all be genuinely praying this doesn't come to pass. New Orleans
has barely begun to recover, and this would be a devastating blow.

It would be funny, though, if, with no catastrophic developments, Bush still had to postpone till, like, Wednesday -- given that McCain wanted him over and out as early in the game as possible.

Hurricane or no hurricane... what a marketing coup for the Democrats if the President doesn't show up for the Republican Convention. I think a lot of Republicans would be pleased if John McCain didn't show up either.

Posted by: Jim G on August 28, 2008 at 2:27 PM | PERMALINK

I can't figure out why this guy would go to Louisiana if a planet hit the earth wiping it out completely. His legacy is etched in stone. Does anyone believe Americans are we going to think, 'oh, this president is really here for the people of this country?'

George McCain should go to the RNC, enjoy himself. I here he's a party animal!

Posted by: TBone on August 28, 2008 at 2:33 PM | PERMALINK

Having the irony be that New Orleans gets torrential (but manageable) rains when the Focus on the Family idiots were praying for rain in Denver will make me sufficiently happy. But I'm going to set some money aside for the Red Cross and other hurricane relief agencies just in case.

Posted by: Mnemosyne on August 28, 2008 at 2:41 PM | PERMALINK

Is this becoming a pattern - that the republicans think any attention is bad publicity. Cheney flying out of town, Bush looking for an excuse to not go to the convention. McCain apparently ready to announce his VP on the Friday before the Labor Day weekend? If McCain had a VP choice that wasn't going to hurt more than it helps him, wouldn't he have found a different day to announce?

Posted by: Dan Ryan on August 28, 2008 at 2:48 PM | PERMALINK

Dan Ryan,

I think the point of announcing the VP before the weekend is to steal Obama's convention thunder.

Its a cynical and totally classless move that is 100% political expediency. Senator McCain would have to work hard to be a bigger douche than he already is.

A hurricane striking during the GOP convention would make me believe that the Big G really does irony well. Hopefully he'll ignore Pat Robertson's phone calls.

Archangel Gabriel: Sir, we've got that Robertson joker on the line again. He's saying something about diverting a storm towards Denver.

God: Uh, yeah...let that one go to voicemail. Thank god for caller ID, huh?

For some of us, September 1 is -- and will forever remain -- the anniversary of first day of WWII. For that reason, I thought it very appropriate that the chickenhawks should start their Convention on that very day. Are you guys sure this hurricane is called Gustaf, not Adolf?
