GOP VOTERS DON'T LIKE THE SCRIPT.... The plan, according to the McCain campaign, is to send Sarah Palin into specific areas in swing states, most notably Ohio and Pennsylvania, where there are "pockets of women who had supported [Hillary] Clinton in the primaries."
Republican voters aren't necessarily prepared to stick to the script.
This might not be the best way to reach out to those disillusioned Hillary Clinton supporters.
In just her second appearance on the campaign trail with John McCain, newly-minted GOP running mate Sarah Palin was showered with boos on Saturday for attempting to praise Clinton's trail-blazing bid to become the first female president.
As she did at in her debut speech in Ohio yesterday, Palin appealed to the women in the crowd here in Pennsylvania with a political shout-out to Geraldine Ferraro, who preceded Palin as the first women to be tapped as a vice presidential candidate.
But in contrast with the mild reception that greeted her comments at the Ohio event, when Palin praised Clinton here for showing "determination and grace in her presidential campaign," the Alaska governor was met with a noisy mix of boos, groans and grumbles around the minor league ballpark where the "Road to the Convention Rally" was held.
And if that doesn't offend die-hard Clinton supporters who might give McCain a second look, maybe this will -- Palin recently thought it was hilarious when a couple of right-wing shock-jocks called a Republican foe a "bitch," and referred to the cancer-surviving rival "a cancer."
After hearing this, Palin not only laughed, but said she'd be "honored" if the shock-jocks attended her State of the State Address.

By November the only votes McCain/Palin will get will be the Bush deadenders.

A small mind from a small town.
BTW, Steve, this Gustav guy is going to erase any of the so-called momentum from Missy Palin. It's a disaster of biblical proportions for Republicans. What choices do they have? 1) Cancel the convention and go to NO and pretend to be concerned, or 2) Let the convention go on, and be seen as bunch of circle-jerkers.
Thank you James Dobson. Too bad you and God didn't have the same calendar.

What would the religious right say if the DEMOCRATIC convention was overshadowed by a category 4 storm? You can bet your bippy this would by God's judgment against Dems for lovin' them some gays and feminists and baby killers.
Somehow, I guess this storm won't be read as a judgment on their politics.

The woman who was referred to as a bitch and a cancer made her opinion known at the Anchorage Daily News:
The reaction wasn't so rosy elsewhere. State Senate President Lyda Green said she thought it was a joke when someone called her at 6 a.m. to give her the news.
"She's not prepared to be governor. How can she be prepared to be vice president or president?" said Green, a Republican from Palin's hometown of Wasilla. "Look at what she's done to this state. What would she do to the nation?"

Laughing at cancer survivors, and demonstrably enjoying it while another women is called a "bitch" by two male DJs?! Nice Palen, very nice. I see you fit right in with your repig ASSociates. I bet you call yourself a Christian too. Hypocritical, self-serving, two-faced, callous right-wingnut pieces of crap, every damn one of you!

Look. I get that this is the big news right now and that commenting on political news is what you do. But seriously, can we maybe try to back off on the Palin issue for at least a day or two. The simple truth is that we don't know much about her. We will undoubtedly be learning a great deal more over the next week or so. Until we do, this attack, attack, attack mode looks a lot more like flailing around then the incisive commentary we are used to.
I get that she's inexperienced (although I have always felt that the whole experience issue is really overrated in election discourse). I get that she's pretty strongly conservative. I get that she apparently feels comfortable abusing her power and then lying about it.
By all means, lets try and get those issues into the narrative. But lets also try to relax a little. This is not a seismic political event. Lets not make this seem like some sort of pile on.

Hmmm. And speaking of scripts, in characteristic fashion it's hard to tell if ditzy MoDo is sarcastically making fun of Palin, wink-wink-pretending to make fun of her while actually saying how cool she is, or somehow both:

Paul: Not ready for prime time.
But prime time is ready for her.
She is the new media chew toy until the hurricane hits.
Still haven't seen any bikini pics yet. Perhaps after the eye of the storm.
In the meanwhile she won't be talking off-script until they get her memory wired with talking points. Call her "mum" for now. Then call her: The Straight Scripted Express.
Methinks the media will ultimately "expect" more from their gravid new chew toy.
Look out below when the water finally breaks on that...

I'm really sick and tired of all the focus on Pennsylvania and Ohio. There are 48 other states. If the stupid white guys in the rust belt insist on voting against their best interests, so be it. Let's move on.

This was a edfensive measure to shore up the Rethug base; I think that internal polls were showing that the base, without Hillary on the Dem ticket was not going to show up so they had to do something. The once fine tuned Rethug political machine isn't firing on all cylinders this year and they are comically switching from theme to theme to get any sort of traction, even in this case totally undermining last weeks concerning experience.
Palin will self destruct in a couple of weeks, and the Rethugs will come up with another thousand excuses and lies why it's the Dems fault and be back on the experience and POW bangwagon before we know it. So let's sit back, get the popcorn and enjoy while we can.

A good talking point Democrats could make, to either GOP or any other voters needing convincing: Obama himself may not have a lot of experience, but he showed his good judgment in picking a worthy and experienced VP. But McCain, despite being experienced himself (and BTW, not "executive experience" either!) showed his poor judgment in picking Palin.

On experience:
There is a world of difference between being a governor of a big state and a resource rich state like Alaska. Please. Being a governor of Alaska is more comparable to being a director of natural resources in a big state. Still an executive position, but the issues in Alaska pale in comparison to the monstrous issues pressing on states like California, Illinois, New York, etc.
Palin was easily able to dodge the looming deficit issue by raising taxes on oil. Just how many other states have that luxury? That was a no brainer.
So, considering this aspect of "responsibility", this calls into question McCain's judgment that much more.
And if this audio does not make her look small I can't imagine any worse. But bring on more You Tubes! This is going to get juicy.
Unlike Harriet Myers she just can't withdraw her name, can she, at this late date? Perhaps the Thomas Eagleton episode with McGovern might just be repeated.
Voters, please, please, spare me from hearing that grating voice for four more years!

Sarah Palin is anti-choice, anti-gay, pro-Big Oil and supports teaching creationism in public schools. If John McCain thinks she's going to bring phalanxes of HRC supporters into the Repubican fold, he's either drunk or senile -- probably both.

Not Christian. Xianist, surely.

Sarah Palin believes that if a rapist forces a woman to become pregnant against her will, then the government should force that woman to give birth to the offspring of the rapist against her will. If the woman terminates the pregnancy that was violently forced upon her, then Sarah Palin wants the government to execute that woman for murder.
Sarah Palin wants the government to be a rapist, holding a knife at the throats of women, forcing them to bear children conceived in violence against their will.
By choosing Sara Palin as his VP nominee, McCain is not trying to appeal to Hillary Clinton supporters. McCain is giving the finger to Hillary Clinton supporters.

McPanderBear and his puppet just played their whole hand, now didn't they? This pick has absolutely nothing to do with "experience;" it's about "deflating the Obama balloon."
Or hasn't anyone noticed that the only thing EVERYBODY has been talking about for the past 48 hours is McCain?!? The man's getting billions of dollars' worth of free publicity every hour---broadcast networks, cable, radio, blogs, and print journalism.
And yes, boys and girls, that's billions---with a big, fat "B" at the beginning....

The GOP has fallen into a trap by believing their own hype.
Once it looked like Obama was the likely candidate they suddenly acted like they liked and respected Clinton just for the harm it could do to Obama. But they forgot that a lot of people-- especially staunch republicans-- REALLY don't like Hillary, hate her politics, and never played the false praise game like they did.
Palin has to stop praising Hillary or risk turning off a lot of GOP voters. The GOP is a lot dumber than I thought if they think that Palin is going to appeal to Hillary's supporters. They really don't seem to understand women voters at all-- shocking I know.
Anecdotally I know a few Hillary voters who are OFFENDED by the choice of Palin. Early poll numbers show that most people are not that impressed by her-- I seriously doubt McCain is going to do for him what he had hoped.

As they should be. McCain has just made clear that he thinks they are just as stupid, ignorant, gullible, and easily manipulated as the Republican base. I expect that, unlike the Republicans, Senator Clinton's supporters will recognize when someone is trying to play them for fools.

Obama just needs to give McCain and Palin enough room to hang themselves. The vetting of Palin has just started. The web blogs are putting up pictures, video and MP3 of her in various situations. Her records are being displayed and her web sites are be ex sponged of everything. Google cache has that solved. I think we might have a republican Eagleton situation. Oh and when Cindy McCain has to mention that Palin as foreign policy experience because Alska is near Russia we know there ain't much there.

Sorry brent. It happens to everyone. Once you are used to something being delivered in a certain way, you tend to want to keep things like they are. Unfortunately the most constant fact about life is that things change. Live with it buddy. Kevin has a new blog. I had book marked the CBR and had to move over here because I love steve's style, if it does not work for you - you are lucky because it's a free site so it's not like you would have lost money by having to go over to Kev's new gig. I know a few Hillary voters who are OFFENDED by the choice of Palin. -- Zoe Kentucky from Pittsburgh,@14:46
Judging by how she ran her campaign (piss poor), I didn't think Hillary would have been a good executive, which is why I voted for Obama in the primaries. But even I was offended by the implied comparison. I have plenty of respect for Hillary as a legislator, no matter what I think of her judgment as an executive. She's knowledgeable, she's savvy. Compare her to Palin? It's offensive.
Strangely, my husband, who voted for Hillary in the primaries, is also offended -- not on Hillary's behalf, but his own. He chewed on the Palin news for 24 hrs and finally exploded last night. His position is that McCain has given the finger not just to Hillary and not just to all women but to everyone. "If anything proves that McCain doesn't give a damn about this country it's his pick of someone who's totally unprepared to take over".
He was gonna vote for Obama anyway come November. But, between the Convention (he liked Obama, he liked Michelle, he likes Biden) and McCain's mis-pick, he's not only gonna vote for him with more enthusiasm but is also more likely to argue Obama's case with the buddies he meets at the gym and post-gym "geezer coffee". Good news all around :)

Bob Loblaw,
You must have been out of the country during the primaries--or, at least, not online. Everytime there was a primary in a large state, the Obama supporters were just certain that he would crush Hillary. And, when she won time after time, the hate talk would just gush out, attacking Hillary, and her stupid supporters, with all kinds of trash talk.
It really got ugly during the West Virginia primary. Obama supporters were talking about the stupid Hillary voters who only had three teeth and practiced incest.
The attacks on Sarah Palin the last two days, by so-called progressives, have brought back stressful memories of those days.

The Palin pick has nothing - NOTHING - to do with Hillary supporters, PUMAs, or whatever. As others have said here and elsewhere, it has everything to do with energizing the Bible-thumpers and what Stanley Greenberg called the "fuck-you boys" to vote for McCain rather than stay home in November.
