PALIN AND STEVENS.... On Friday, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) told CNN, "Gov. Palin took on Ted Stevens. If she can take him on, she can take on the Russians. Heh." He liked the line so much, Graham repeated it on ABC News yesterday, saying, "If you can take on Ted Stevens and that crowd in Alaska, you can handle the Russians."

On its face, it's an unusually inane thing to say. Unless Ted Stevens is a nuclear power with autocratic tendencies, the analogy is rather a childish one for a United States senator to make on national television.

But more to the point, Graham's just wrong. Palin didn't "take on" the allegedly corrupt Alaskan senator; she allied herself with him throughout her brief political career. That includes, we learned today, Palin's work on Stevens' 527 group.

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin began building clout in her state's political circles in part by serving as a director of an independent political group organized by the now embattled Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens.

In the grand scheme of things, this is probably not the most serious of revelations. It's interesting, I suppose, to connect Palin to one of the more scandal-plagued lawmakers in Washington, but most Americans probably don't even know who Ted Stevens is.

More importantly, though, doesn't it seem as if the McCain campaign's talking points on Palin need a complete overhaul?

The McCain campaign said Palin opposed the infamous "bridge to nowhere." That's false. The campaign said Palin supported the Bush "surge" policy. That's false. The campaign said Palin is the "commander in chief" of the Alaska National Guard. That's misleading. The campaign said Palin is qualified on foreign policy because she lives in a state near Russia. That's dumb.

And the campaign boasted about Palin "taking on" Stevens, and that's wrong. Did the person who wrote the talking points have any idea who Sarah Palin is?

Don't get too excited, but November 18th is "Ted Stevens Appreciation Day" in Alaska. It's also Uncle Ted's birthday.

Anyone want to come to my party?

Yes Steve, the campaign talking points on Palin need an overhaul, but what do they replace them with? She was against the Bridge To Nowhere..err...no... She took on Ted Stevens....oh...apart from when she didn't...She's ready for the Russians...ummm...maybe not.

What's left?

Graham is actually telling us all that that the sitting senior most GOP senator is so corrupt that he needs to be taken on by Palin.

GOP: The self-described party of corrupt senators.

Graham has been a one-stop center of talking points for the Iraq war and John McCain. I assume Lieberman will now try and top this.

Is someone reading the Palin book? Kaylene Johnson, _Sarah: How a Hockey Mom Turned Alaska's Political Establishment on Its Ear_ (Epicenter, 2008), available on Amazon. Should be interesting.

Palin is a sideshow and a distraction.

The bigger story is the police treatment of the peaceful documentary group known as "iWitness" who were instrumental in showing that the police in NYC overstepped their authority in the arrests surrounding the last GOP convention. They simply document proceedings with video cameras. The police reaction:

The house where I-Witness Video is staying in St. Paul has been surrounded by police. We have locked all the doors. We have been told that if we leave we will be detained. One of our people who was caught outside is being detained in handcuffs in front of the house. The police say that they are waiting to get a search warrant. More than a dozen police are wielding firearms, including one St. Paul officer with a long gun, which someone told me is an M-16.

Palin or no Palin, McCain is still woefully under-prepared for the 21st century:

He’s without an actionable vision for changing the long-term energy landscape by solely relying on more drilling that keeps us dependent on oil, investing today's money in a limited payoff many years from now.

He has a tax-plan that will reward even more than now the wealthiest 5%, while tossing less than $50 a year in tax breaks to the people at the bottom.

He has no plans to change the medical/health insurance environment where we are the only first world nation to leave its citizens on their own regarding health and medicine.

And most importantly, McCain is so eager to prove beyond all doubt and beyond healthy reason, that unlike 40 years ago, he can be the VICTOR in a WAR (“I know how to win a war!!!”). So eager to stir the pot to get his war that he is in on the ground floor of trying to instigate one in the Republic of Georgia and sings about bombing Iran.

Perhaps choosing Palin, and making her the news, keeps us from discussing his lack of constructive plans for the country.

Posted by: jcricket on September 1, 2008 at 4:14 PM | PERMALINK

Her relationship goes well beyond the 527. He cut an ad for her. She defended him after his indictment. She accepted his endorsement for VP.

More importantly, these maverick traits - saying no the bridge, fighting the establishment (which she had to do because she ran aginst an incumbent) - are at the heart of McCain's support for her. He made this completely clear in his interview with Stephanopolous just yesterday.

hey only need new talking points if the media exposes the old ones. Which won't happen. The media will spend more time on Biden's plagism than Palin's lies about he bridge to nowhere.

Man o man. I just thought the Goopers were greedy and uncaring, worshiping the Almighty Dollars and feeling holier and holier the more they accumulated.

Now it appears they are just dumb and posts, too.

Problem? Cindy was in Georgia (the one on the Black Sea, not the one in the Deep South) and couldn't Google Palin for Ole' Wet Start.

Posted by: CalGal on September 1, 2008 at 4:25 PM | PERMALINK

I meant to type "dumb as posts" but looking at it, dumb AND posts has a certainly something about it.

Since have things like false, misleading and dumb had any effect on the corporate press/media's promotion/protection of McCain, specifically, and Republicans, generally?

Nearly every statement out of George W. Bush's mouth in 2000 and 2004 was false, misleading, dumb or a combination of those. It did not matter to the corporate press/media and it did not matter to the dim-witted American voters.

Evidence to support this? The only story that got any traction against McCain was the 'how many houses' story.

Do you think that the corporate press/media will ever let the American people know about McCain's bad ideas, shameless pandering or corrupt campaign staff? Do you think the American voters would care if they were told? If your answer is yes to either of these questions, please submit some evidence to support your answer.

How Graham ever got elected to the senate is beyond me. An authoritarian perfect example. he uses all the techniques from changing the subject ot feigned outrage and indignation to keep from ever having to admit he's just plain wrong. He would say or do anything to keep in power. If Sarah Palin were suddenly dead he would argue that her image would still be effective and we could use recordings of her voice etc. Stopped listening to anything Graham has to say. btw...his McCain loving twin Lieberman has a sex photo at www.driftglass.com that is truly something to see.

Has anyone heard that the Dutch intel group that had penetrated Iran's nuclear program has announced they are pulling their people out because they claim an attack by the US is imminent.
They revealed their plan to sabotage Iran's nuclear facility but had to leave immediately to prevent their operatives from getting caught in the US attack. As a democratic nation we still can't prevent our president from attacking another country...possibly using nukes? Are we functioning as a dictatorship and completely powerless to stop Bush/Cheney from plunging our nation into war?? Is there no one who can stop these people??

Every time a campaign makes false, misleading and dumb statements (O.K., maybe not dumb statements) it is shortchanging the voters. Not enough attention is being paid to why this is being done, and what the consequences of elections won by such deceit are for the country.

Since neither John McCain, nor his PAID staff actually took the time to vet Gov. Palin, I can understand the media's category five approach just days after learning of her existence. What I do not understand is why after each detail arises, in particular, the host of lies she told during her introduction to the nation - lies subsequently parroted by a number of McCain surrogates, including several elected officials - the reaction of so many seems to be bewilderment? As if the entire campaign McCain has run to date hasn't been full of lies. He lies about his record, he lies about his opponents record. What hasn't been lies has been misrepresentations, distortions and distractions.

The media should be held accountable. The American people deserve to know the truth.

Sarah Palin and Ted Stevens have clashed over various issues in the past year, e.g. she wants to reduce dependence on Congressional earmarks. If you only look at those episodes, and not all the times they've been buddies, then yes, Palin has taken on Stevens.

What do you mean "unless"? Have you not heard of Ted Stevens' nuclear powers?

lobbygow, the Green Party leader of the demonstrations in St Paul was on CSPAN today. I only caught a bit... but he said the police arrested a bunch of people who were meeting peaceably. They were pushed to the floor and handcuffed, including a 5-YEAR-OLD CHILD! Unbelievable... what is this, China?

These Rs are really good at spinning... in a letter to my paper today a writer said it was great that McCain has 7 houses, because even though he was tortured in Vietnam, when he came back he got his life in order and did well.

Not mentioned was his privileged upbringing nor his trophy heiress wife and the woman he divorced in order to marry her.

What, you expect the media to actually do their job? They will notice these items when the Democratic nominees use them in their speeches and not a minute sooner.

What the hell IS all this stuff about "taking on the Russians", anyway? Does the McCain "government" fancy Russia for a military adversary?

Evidently, having his ass handed to him by a bunch of undernourished-looking guys in black pajamas (who kept him as their guest for a few year: hint; when you can't leave whenever you like, it means the other guys are in charge) taught McPOW little. The Surge seems to have gone to his head, so that he thinks America is actually winning in Iraq, and that the U.S. enjoys full-spectrum military dominance everywhere. It's easy to get a little drunk on your power when you're beating on a bunch of ragtag insurgents that was only supposed to number less than 10,000, some four years of grinding war ago. McPOW should not in his wildest dreams imagine taking on an organized military the size of Russia's, unassisted. And he would be. Here's a tip, Gramps; if you kick over the apple-cart with Russia, don't try any of that coalition-building stuff, hear?

Wrong.

Talking points acquire accuracy through *repetition*.

I seem to remember that The Washington Monthly ran a piece talking up Hon. Sen. Graham as an up and coming moderate voice. Maybe you should do another on his political trajectory in the interim.

I suggest you do your homework before you make any further unsubstantiated attacks at Sarah Palins involvement in the Excellence in Public Service Series, or continue to spread the netlore surrounding this.

The 527 you refer to is NOT Ted Stevens 527. He is not on the board of the the 527, nor is he a founder. It was simply named after him, long before any questionable activity came into play.

There are Excellence in Public Service Series Leadership programs for Republican women in many states. All of the state programs are named after living or dead Republican leaders. Please refer to Indianas Lugar Series website for the history of the the programs: http://www.lugarseries.org/expansion.php

Sarah Palins connection as Director of the Alaskan Series would have no ethical wrongdoing whatsoever as it pertains to Ted Stevens other than the program had his name on it. Period.
