LET'S DEFINE 'PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES'.... Last night, ABC News' Charlie Gibson reminded John McCain that he once said, "Sen. Obama does not have the national security experience and background to be president," and asked if Sarah Palin does. McCain first denied ever having said that (he wasn't telling the truth) and proceeded to argue:

"She's the commander of the Alaskan National Guard. [Obama] said that Iran was a tiny problem. He's never visited south of our border. He has no experience on these issues. She has been in charge and she has had national security as one of her primary responsibilities."

Either McCain doesn't know what he's talking about, or he's lying with the skills of a clumsy con man. It's really just one or the other.

First, Obama never said Iran was a tiny problem; he said Iran is tiny as compared to the threat posed by the former Soviet Union during the Cold War. If McCain wants to argue otherwise, he can make his case, but lying is just so unbecoming.

Second, the notion that one of Palin's "primary responsibilities" as governor of Alaska is "national security," is just laughable. Palin may be the ostensible head of the Alaska National Guard, but she's "never personally ordered the state guard to do anything."

Maj. Gen. Craig Campbell, the service commander of the Alaska National Guard, told McClatchy that Palin has "no command authority" over the Guard when it comes to national security. The Guard responds to in-state natural disasters and civic emergencies, but Palin hasn't approved any of these activities during her tenure, allowing Campbell to have authority over Guard operations.

Just to be clear, Palin's lack of national security experience, to my mind, is not necessarily a disqualifier for national office. Plenty of capable national candidates have run without direct experience in foreign policy. Few have been as unprepared as Palin, but that need not be a deal breaker.

The problem here is that McCain and his campaign keep lying about this. Instead of crafting a compelling defense for Palin's lack of qualifications, the Republican campaign just creates its own reality.

McCain has had time to get his facts straight, and he nevertheless told a national television audience just last night that one of Palin's "primary responsibilities" as governor of Alaska is "national security." That's just insane.

"lying is so unbecoming" to who, Steve?

certainly not to Republicans who cheered every time RooDee or Mittens lips moved last night (which, by definition, meant they were lying).

or to the MSM, who seem to be giving Palin fairly unanimous rave reviews this morning - which they also gave Obama, although it is mindbending to try and comprehend how one could praise both speeches given that one called for unity and the other was the most divisive since Buchanan circa 1992.

apparently not the great masses of the voting public, many of whom voted for W twice.

really, are we sure lying is even remotely considered a bad thing anymore in this country? or were you just, um, lying about it being unbecoming? (if you were, you, too, may be qualified for a national ticket!)

Ten Things I Learned from last night’s Republican Convention

1. A real tan is better than a fake tan. (I had no idea Mitt Romney was orange!)

2. Sarah Palin attacks with one hand and hides behind her kids with the other.

3. A woman can lie just as well as a man. (Still with the “Bridge to Nowhere” lie?)

4. Republicans don’t have any new ideas to solve America’s problems.

5. Cowgirl diplomacy won’t be any better than cowboy diplomacy.

6. A baby with Down Syndrome makes a much better prop than greek columns.

7. Republicans enjoy abuse of power wherever they can find it – it’s a sign of strength.

8. Republicans are opposed to organized communities.

9. John McCain was a POW.

10. Cindy McCain just LOVES “red meat”, and she looks strange in day glo green.

Maybe the folks at AP have decided to reign in the McCain surrogate in Washington and actually be a news service again.

The Palin-McCain campaign knows that they can lie with impunity. The fawning, obsequious courtiers to America's corporate aristocracy who are the highly-paid "on-air personalities" of the corporate-owned mass media, and the fatuous "pundits" of the corporate-owned print media, will never, ever call them out on their lies. They are not paid to perform a "public service" by impartially informing the American people about truth and facts. They are paid to propagandize on behalf of their owners, America's Ultra-Rich Ruling Class, Inc., and their ruthless class war against everyone else. They answer to the same corporate masters as Palin and McCain.

Not if you see it through the lens of McCan't's job being to launch Palin onto the public stage, by any means necessary. Once she's over the hump, all this will be old news, and she'll be the standard bearer for the New Republican Party.

I think everyone's missing the big question. The governor of Alaska is obviously vital to our national security. But who will defend us while she's out campaigning? Who can step into those mighty shoes? Is the vice-governor of Alaska up to that job?

McCain offered to educate Obama on national security by escorting him on a trip to Iraq. McCain could have just conceded the obvious and told everyone that educating Palin on national security was now one of his main tasks and that she would be up to speed by inauguration day. Simple, straight answer.

But McCain is caught in a trap of his own making and does not have the right stuff to get out of it. McCain pissed in his own boot and now he is drinking from it. But that is Johnny, the real deal, stubborn as GW.

Recipe for a Republican Convention Evening

Ingredients:

6 gallons of John McCain was a tortured POW.
6 gallons of Barack Obama will raise your taxes.
6 gallons of Mock Obama and Democrats for pure sport.
1 gallon of Mavericky Maverick Mav juice.

Combine ingredients then add a dash of granddaddy worship and fear of foreigners. Bottle in gallon jugs. Liberally coat the mouth of the jug with salt from tears from stories of John McCain's torture, then chug.

I think it would be prudent to ask anyone making the argument about Palin's experience by osmosis what other subject that is true for and who else has benefited from experience by osmosis. Maybe it's a singularity. Maybe it's only foreign policy and maybe it's only Sarah Palin.

Meanwhile, the Dow is down 150 points so far this morning. So, according to the Kudlow Theory, the markets are worried about the prospect of Palin as VP. Or maybe he'll argue that it shows the speech was so bad that the markets now think Obama will win which, of course, will be Bad for the Economy. If anyone hears him make either of these arguments (or something equally inane) on CNBC, let us know, would you?

#1 Osmosis is a scientific fact/theory. Palin comes form the right that does not believe in science, only the word of the right wing.

#2 What is scary is Republican rhetoric is repeated so many times Americans believe it is fact. There are Americans who will not look any further than what is plastered on TV and the front of newpapers and magazines. These are the people the Republican party targets so Republicans can win. I pray there are enough discerning Americans who will vote against rhetoric and for substance of issues affecting out country..
Palin was like a cheerleader last night. Her method is affective as she was able to win as governor with just as slim a resume as for VEEP.I can't wait iuntil the debate with Biden. Also is Palin running fort VEEP or Pres? I got confused in her speech.

It should be apparent to anyone - Democrats, Republicans, members of the press, etc. - that the McCain campaign will claim anything in order to get elected, regardless of consistency, ideology, or basic common sense. The Dems should really focus on calling them out as the bullshit artists they are.

Few have been as unprepared as Palin, but that need not be a deal breaker.

Yeah, actually, it does need to be a deal breaker. "Unprepared", in Palin's case, encompasses more than lack of directly relevant experience, it also encompasses a lack of evidenced knowledge of the broad issues, a demonstrated lack of the appropriate temperament, and a demonstrated recklessness.

Posted by: cmdicely on September 4, 2008 at 10:52 AM | PERMALINK

And then there's this:

"He's never visited south of our border."

Seems like a moronic throw-away line, sure. But what do we know about Palin? She never got a passport until 2007. She then travelled to Kuwait and Germany (with a much-ballyhooed layover in Ireland). And that's it. So apparently she's never been south of our border, either.

Yes, John McCain has become an unmitigated bullshit artist. He seems like a man possessed by the idea of out-doing the failures of W. on every pathetic, nauseating level.

I'm not sure if you meant a demonstrated recklessness on McCain's part, but if not, McCain's recklessness in picking her is the biggest deal-breaker of all. We've been given a picture of how McCain makes important decisions of major national consequence, and his method sucks.

Posted by: Gregory on September 4, 2008 at 10:58 AM | PERMALINK

What did the "he never visited south of our border" have to do with this? He said it twice in that interview.

Posted by: John McCaboWabo on September 4, 2008 at 11:10 AM | PERMALINK

The reason is that, as usual, Republicans want to have it both ways. They want to continue the "Obama isn't experienced" meme... while at the same time push their unqualified VP as the sixteenth coming of Ronald Reagan.

And if you heard Palin's speech... that's obviously going to continue. As Reagan proved, Republican politicians only need one skill- to be able to believe their own lies.

Between the "5% of the time" Maverick and the America-hating Alaskan socialist, it's one hell of a ticket they've slapped together there. The really comedy is watching Republicans convince themselves that these people are great leaders, and paradoxically just like them.

Posted by: JSG on September 4, 2008 at 11:11 AM | PERMALINK

What they need to do is have some anti-abortion terrorists kidnap her and torture her by showing her pictures of Obama. Then they could have some elite Alaskan Delta Force rescue her. Then when someone questions her, she can say I was a Prioner of War and they tortured me.

The reason people tell lies is because they work. They convince people of something that the liar wants them to believe, even though it's not the truth. The only way to get someone to stop lying is to ensure that it stops working.

It allows the media to pretend they are doing their job, when what really needs to happen is Charlie Gibson calling McCain on his bullshit WHILE HE IS LYING.

Letting him spread that crap unchallenged only to "clarify" later is just what McCain wants.

I'll be glad when the negative attack harpy flies back to Alaska, presumably brushing up on her proximity to Russia/fake foreign policy cred and Good old John McSame is back in the Senate getting his ass handed to him by a Democratic President, Vice President and House and Senate majorities. Where are we as a nation today, on the moon? I unfortunately can believe that up to half of this country is gleefully swallowing the Republican ticket peuso-soccermom-religious bullshit being offered (again…. Ronald Reagan, Whoop-de-do!!!) while losing their homes, jobs and getting ass-raped at the local "gas and sip". Amazing!

You quote McCain: "She's the commander of the Alaskan National Guard. [Obama] said that Iran was a tiny problem. He's never visited south of our border. He has no experience on these issues. She has been in charge and she has had national security as one of her primary responsibilities."

Given this train of thought, it appears that McCain thinks "Iran" and "south of the border" are somehow connected. Does he think Iran is south of the border? We know that he has big problems remembering countries (Czechoslovakia) and borders (Iraq and Afghanistan), but this is rediculous. Maybe he's confusing Iran and Venezuela.

But as for the National Guard/national security comments that brackett the Iran/south of the border nonsense, I wouldn't go there. Surely it's clear that Palin has brilliantly used her forces to keep the Russkies out of Alaska, just as Jeb Bush and Charlie Crist have used the National Guard to prevent Cuba from invading Florida.

Posted by: CMcC on September 4, 2008 at 12:06 PM | PERMALINK

Just a suggestion, but it might be good idea to showcase Palin's "experience". Since the international experience is dominated by her dealing with Russia (being so close to Alaska and all), maybe someone can ask her some questions that highlight her Russian experience. Here are a few questions and answers:

The Kamchatka peninsula and the the Chukchi Peninsula are the parts of Russia closet to Alaska. Indeed, these parts of Russia share a park between the two nations. What park is that?
The Bering Land Bridge National Preserve which is managed by the US National Park Service and the (Russian) Beringia Nature-Ethnic Park

Could you name the biggest city in Kamchatka?
Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky (198,000)

What is the nearest Russian state (Oblast) to Alaska?
Chutotka

What is the principle city in Chukotka?
Anadyr

What is its population?
Over 11,000

Who was governor of Chukotka from 2000-2008?
Roman Abramovich

Is he wealthy, middle class or poor?
He is a billionaire

Abramovich resigned as governor recently. Who accepted his resignation?
Dmitri Medvedev, President of Russia

I would be shocked if Gov. Palin could answer more that one or two of these basic questions about the "neighbor" she has "experience" with.

Posted by: Charlie on September 4, 2008 at 12:10 PM | PERMALINK

You refer to McCain's claim that one of Palin's "primary responsibilities" as governor of Alaska is "national security."

Having spent 8 years trashing the Constitution, the Republicans are now trashing everything I ever learned about federalism. Actually, of course, local and state authorities have "primary responsibility" not for "national security," but for "law enforcement."

Palin's record: She fired both the city police chief and the state director of public safety for personal/political reasons.

RepublicanPointOfView,

This is an example of something I find disconcerting. Sarah Palin is being touted as a better alternative to Obama. But McCain and Obama are running for the same office -- Palin is running for the vice presidency. She is certainly not running for commander in chief of anything.

Is all the kerfuffle about Palin just a means of pulling attention off of McCain and his obvious problems? If so, it seems to be working rather well.
