THURSDAY'S CAMPAIGN ROUND-UP....Today's installment of campaign-related news items that wouldn't generate a post of their own, but may be of interest to political observers:

* No one wants to use the word "Bush" at the Republican convention. I wonder why that is.

* The DNC has a solid new ad poised to air in Michigan hitting McCain on the economy.

* Former Rep. Rob Portman (R-Ohio), a McCain advisor, is the latest to defend the media's scrutiny of Sarah Palin, rejecting Republican accusations of sexism.

* The day after McCain campaign manager Rick Davis claimed that the campaign "is not about issues," Barack Obama incorporated the bizarre notion into his stump speech.

* Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is done in Detroit.

* In a CNN poll taken before the start of the Republican convention, Obama leads McCain by 15 in Iowa (55% to 40%), 12 in Minnesota (53% to 41%), and two in Ohio (47% to 45%).

* In a Democracy Corps (D) poll taken before the start of the Republican convention, McCain leads Obama in North Carolina by two, 47% to 44%.

McCain planning more “maverick” PR with town-hall style acceptance speech.

But I thought North Carolina wasn't a swing state. It certainly looks line one to me.

I just want to know where the polls from Indiana, Georgia, Montana, the Dakotas, and other states are. Is there some premium access site that gives you this information? I'd really, really like to see the results of the work the Obama campaign is doing.

I thought North Carolina wasn't a swing state. It certainly looks like one to me.

I just want to know where the polls from Indiana, Georgia, the Dakotas, Montana, and the others are. I know we've gotten a few here or there over the past few weeks, but I expected to see much more frequent polling at this point in the game. Or is that not how it's done? I'd even pay to see some premium access site information.

Pollster.com has a good round up of state polls, as does TPM.

That Michigan ad is good.

McCain storm troopers were in action last night. read this courtsey of the Boston Globe:

ST. PAUL -- Security officials, under the direction of South Carolina Attorney General Henry McMaster, the convention's sergeant-at-arms and its self-described top law-enforcement officer, seized a pro-Ron Paul sign from a Massachusetts alternate delegate during tonight's proceedings.

Francie Steffian, elected on Mitt Romney's slate, said she was given a handwritten sign that read "Keeping America Safe" when she entered the hall. She crossed out the slogan, associated with John McCain's campaign, and on the back wrote "Ron Paul Revolution." Shortly after displaying the sign, two men wearing McCain baseball caps and earpieces rushed to her section and demanded it from her.

"I just wrote my opinion on it, and they took it," said Steffian, of Ashby. "I didn't agree with it, so I wrote what I believe. I don't feel he's keeping America safe."

The two men were met in the seating area by McMaster, who folded up the sign, placed it under his arm and said, "Good job."

One of the men surveyed the scene and spoke into his wrist. "Please be advised that we have confiscated a Ron Paul sign in 124," he said.

Please correct your figures for the last point, either the percentages posted or the math is wrong.

So is Palin a Caribou Barbie, or a Pork Princess?

In a Democracy Corps (D) poll taken before the start of the Republican convention, McCain leads Obama in North Carolina by two, 47% to 44%.

I expect McCain will get a bounce out of the people who would've voted for him anyway coming up for air, based on the heavy dose of red meat doled out last night by Sarah, Palin and Tall.

I'd really, really like to see the results of the work the Obama campaign is doing.

I doubt you'd get anything like a full picture out of the polls. Not that polls aren't indicative per se, just that the methodologies, sample set and margin of error vary so much, each poll is really only relative to itself - in other words, what are the Democracy Corp numbers tracking over time?

I think a better indication of what the Obama campaign is up to is where the media spend is, how much cash is in the bank, monthly contributions and fund-raising numbers, where they are putting boots on the ground and how many NEW voters they are signing up. None of that will ever show up in polls (except perhaps for the media outlays) and all of that makes a difference in November.

Palin has one other flaw that probably shouldn't matter, but, well, this is American politics.

Her voice.

Apparently Bobcat Goldthwait and Gilbert Gottfried were unable to accept McCain's offer so he went with the third shrillest, most annoying voice in America.

It's fingernails on a chalkboard every time she opens her mouth. Not only is what she says offensive and wrong, but how she says is in both temperament and voice.

How much of her pseudo-Canadian screech can America take?

LOL. I assume you are being sarcastic. This blog and nearly the entire blogosphere has been all Palin, all the time for days now. There have been 4 posts on Palin since last night. I was honestly beginning to wonder if anything else was happening in the political world. Reading a post that is not about Palin is like the moment when the vacuum cleaner finally shuts off and you can hear yourself think.

Yeah, Steve hasn't written any articles about Palin for the past few days.

That's for calling him out on it, blog topic enforcer!

Add Utah Gov. Huntsman to the list of foreign policy experience delusionists:

"I love when people say she has no national-security experience, no foreign-policy experience," Huntsman told Utah delegates to the Republican National Convention. "The state borders Russia and Canada, for heaven's sake."

These guys are trying way too hard.

Agreed. As I commented on another thread, after listening to excerpts of Palin's speech on the radio this morning, I heard a brief clip of Dick Cheney speaking in Georgia and -- though I never thought I'd find anything nice to say about Cheney -- his voice was a warm, sonorous, well-modulated, soothing relief from Palin's screechy, squawky, nasal, grating, exceedingly annoying yammering.

And then there was her seemingly involuntary Beavis-and-Butthead "heh-heh-heh" sniggering at her own "jokes". Very creepy.

Sean S you're going to get me in trouble at work.
The thought of brave McCommandos getting a knot in their pants over a hand printed sign has me guffawing.

As for Portman, He's trying to save McPOW but probably won't get any thanks. Das Base has been trained to associate people who decry sexism with hairy-legged Godless lesbian feminazis who want to burn Bibles and teach 1st graders how to use condoms. Even though the fRightWankers might be willing to make allowances for it becaue Palin's one of their own, too much of that sort of thing will come across as whining and only Dems whine.

Let's hope McPOW doesn't stop being a stubborn PoS.

Also: The format is pfffffbt!

* No one wants to use the word "Bush" at the Republican convention. I wonder why that is.

It's because of the scandal of Palin getting an earmark for her "landing strip".

Many of us have had next-door neighbors for years, decades even, and we know practically nothing about them. But if your state borders another country, then you have foreign relations experience??! WTFF?? And the Repigs eat this obvious horse-crap that their leeed-urs dole out? Amazing.

But thank God we have all those Governors with foreign policy experience in Minnesota, N. Dakota, Montana, and Washington State! Since they border Canada, they must know a lot. They will help us through any international crisis we may face. Good grief! What a bunch of ass-hats.

She's so freakin' talented! Makes me want to burn my bra and club a baby seal.

So, If I live in a state the borders a state that borders a "foreign country", does that also qualify me as having foreign relations experience?
How about if I had intimate relations either in a foreign country or with a foreign person either here or in a foreign country? What if I looked at a globe of the planet and noticed the name of a foreign country? I know where it is, so does that qualify?
Does drinking French wine make me French?
Just asking!

Oh, I know that. I've read that McCain's camp is ramping up spending in North Carolina and Virginia to fend off Obama, which is a big, big success. I know the limitations of polling, particularly when there appears to be a good chance that there will be a number of new voters and a greater number of Democratic voters than some think. I just figured that, given the major investment made by Obama in traditionally red states like Indiana, we'd see a greater focus on trying to figure out what's going on.

One interesting incident of note: I understand that Peggy "Riefenstahl" Noonan is denying that she said what we heard her say about Palin. "When Character Was King" is the name of her hagiographic bio of Ronald Reagan. Either she caved in to the pressure of party (a la John DiLulio over his "Mayberry Machivels" comments) or she willingly told the whopper on her own. Shame, shame, Peggy. Her bio could be titled "When Character Gets in the Way".

Republicans must not watch much baseball.

MSNBC has hosted a few weird metaphors today:

She hit a homerun with bases loaded. (Isn't that a grand slam?)

She came into the sixth game of the World Series and threw a no-hitter. (And?)

Brian Williams comeback: as a closer! (What?)

But I guess Sarah really needs these kinds of kookie analogies.

John Hansen wrote: No mention of Sarah Palin. That silence is deafening.

....except for, oh, the other eight posts today on what a mencacious, incompetent, hateful and corrupt loser -- in other words, typically Republican -- you idiots are hanging your hopes of four more years on.

Palin's religious extremism turned you on, and you came here to gloat, and instead wind up looking, as usual, like a fool. You mind really doesn't admit any facts that conflict with your twisted Republican faith, does it, Hansen? Shame on you.

Item: The day after McCain campaign manager Rick Davis claimed that the campaign "is not about issues," Barack Obama incorporated the bizarre notion into his stump speech.

Democratic pundits have been "shocked--shocked!" about this for a couple of days, and their righteousness has some justification--except that it ignores the accuracy of Davis' observation. Luntz and Lakoff and others who study voter behavior have shown that the vast majority of voters do decide their vote, especially for president, based on the overall image of the candidate. Despite Obama's use of the quote to bring up issues, he knows this, too. Thank goodness he has kept his image discipline consistent, but we shouldn't dismiss Davis' line as "bizarre"; it's a political truth. We ignore it at our peril.

an almost, kinda "i told you so":

if we'd nominate Gov. Schweitzer as VP, about 2/3rds of Palin's speech last night would have had to have been re-written. if in fact the public at large becomes favorable toward Palin as a slightly off-kilter, non-traditional, Western, populist, non-attorney who embodies "change," it will only prove that Schweitzer would have totally kicked ass.

Am I the only one who actually feels sorry for George Bush? The last Republican convention during his presidency, and he doesn't even get to go?

I hear he's furious, and I don't blame him. Wonder what's frothing in the undercurrents in Republicanland right now?

Posted by: KathyF on September 4, 2008 at 2:51 PM | PERMALINK

The Republican Convention has basically become McCain's Gulag. I got this email from a Ron Paul delegate in Nevada:

We were censored and pressured. Period! We have been followed and surrounded by security everywhere we go in MN. We got treated as children the entire time by NV GOP leadership. We gave the NV GOP their 34 delegates.

Nick Vanderpool (Delegate Organizer) earned our votes or I should say our absense of principles because he talked to us like an adult and not like a spoiled child stomping his feet. He has my respect and NV will not suffer the disfavor of the RNC overlords now. We may be able save our party with much work and talking outloud instead of secret whispers in back rooms.

That is the last olive branch! If we (Freedom Minded Republicans) do not receive any respect starting tomorrow, they (Anyone but Freedom Minded Republicans) will all have a hard time doing anything politically in NV without us on their ass on every issue.

We have learned their game and their tactics. We have out-played them at every step of the way. But when the rules change on a moments notice then we can not play anymore. We must improvise! As we have. NV will have its day in the future. No one is giving up! This is a rigged game and we see that clearer the ever now!

We are still processing all the happenings of this week. We have a lot of intel on the corruption seeded at the national level.

Meeting with other state delegations gave us so much info on other tactics we have not seen yet in NV.

Police state at home, empire abroad. They go together and it's been obvious this week.

Ron Paul delegates are shawdowed and chaporoned by McCain flunkies like one would be in North Korea.

Any demonstrations for Paul is a considered a disruption and the delagtes will expelled from the convention.

Any signs for Paul are confiscated by the Red Guards, oh excuse me, McCain floor whips in their red hats.

Paul delegates told if they cause trouble convention will not hold roll call and supend rules to nominate by acclamation.

When roll call does come not all Paul votes counted.

Phony rumor about convention nominating McCain on Wednesday causes Paul delegates to miss RP's speech on Tuesday at the Target Center. That had to be bussed from Target Center to the Xcel.

I'm sure there's going to be more examples of this as our delegates begin to talk about what happen. I'll keep you updated.
