THURSDAY'S MINI-REPORT.... Today's edition of quick hits:

* It was a very rough day on Wall Street today. If Larry Kudlow's logic is right, and I know it's not, that means investors were unimpressed with Sarah Palin's convention speech.

* He got off easy: "Jack Abramoff, the disgraced former lobbyist who orchestrated a wide-ranging scheme to corrupt several members of Congress, was sentenced to four years in prison Thursday afternoon."

* Jesus was a community organizer.

* A huge setback for Florida's new private school voucher scheme.

* Why would the McCain campaign acknowledge a tabloid rumor few had even heard of? (On a related note, the National Enquirer's response was surprisingly amusing.)

* Do Republicans know there's still a war going on in Afghanistan? Apparently not.

* Let's have a more detailed conversation about which of the two competing families -- the McCains and the Obamas -- qualify as "elitists."

* Palin's television ratings were extremely good last night.

* If Democrats used fake troops in a convention video, we'd never hear the end of it, and Fox News would never stop talking about it.

* Palin boasted in her speech that she's launched a "natural gas pipeline to help lead America to energy independence," which she described as "the largest private-sector infrastructure project in North American history." Her claim fudged most of the facts.

* I wonder if any of the convention attendees notice the contrast of white on white.

* CNN seems confused about the meaning of the phrase "knockout punch."

* Funniest. Roger Simon column. Ever.

* Jon Stewart 1, Karl Rove 0.

Anything to add? Consider this an open thread.

If Larry Kudlow's logic is right, and I know it's not, that means investors were unimpressed with Sarah Palin's convention speech.

Or it means they're afraid she'll win.

Palin having good ratings is actually probably a good thing. As empty as her speech was, it probably help turn a bunch of people away. It's better to see the train wreck first hand than have some Faux news moron tell you how pretty it was.

It was a very rough day on Wall Street today

CNBC was explaining the drop by saying that lower gas prices were bad for the economy and therefore scaring investors.

Palin's television ratings were extremely good last night

It's called schadefreude.

The "fake troops" issue is a non-issue. If I'm not mistaking (always a dubious proposition) military personnel are not permitted to appear in uniform in political venues.

The footage of the fake troops is apparently stock footage shot in June.

Such, however, does not diminish you point.

So much to discuss. Last night's performance by Sarah Palin was an abomination. She showed us that she is definitely the next Bush in the White House in the making. She lied like a cheap rug, and did so with aplomb. It was frightening!

So, let's look at Palin by Comparison. She lies, she lies. Can't keep track of all the lies. How about this. Ms. Palin, you are full of shit. This is a comparison between what Palin and Biden said on the issues. As a bonus, there is a comparison between how they view their political opponents. This is verbatim. Check it out

If you're not aware of Ms. Palin's own pastor problems, watch these videos. If you're not scared to death, you should be. Reverand Wright has nothing on these folks! Note to media: Where's the 24/7 coverage of this?

If you missed this bit of satire the other day, check it out. It's freaking hysterical!

And just in case you forget just what Senator Obama has accomplished, let's take another look at Obama's Senate Accomplishments.

Feel free to spread these accomplishments far and wide. If I hear one more Empty Suit comment, I am going to h

* Let's have a more detailed conversation about which of the two competing families -- the McCains and the Obamas -- qualify as "elitists."

As one of the commenters at Vanity Fair noted "there's a big difference in being elitist and being rich. Obama is elitist, Cindy McCain is rich."

And there you have just one of the secrets to the GOPs incredible success in our instant gratification, anti-intellectual culture.

Your basic middle American rube doesn't aspire to be educated or even smart. They aspire to be rolling in dough that they can spend on anything they damned well please. Jet skis, guns, Thomas Kincade masterpieces, etc.

If God won't give it to them through some sort of celestial ponzi scheme, then a GOP president is the next best thing.

Dems just can't spin candidate image like the GOP can. Thankfully, we have a candidate who has genuine charisma this time out.

McPalin should be left alone to rant and rave. Their tone is far more damaging than the content. Palin seems ecstatically unhinged while McCain seems crankily desperate. I hope he does nothing but sneer tonight. The content of his speech might energize the rubes, but the subliminal message will be "I'm a jealous loser making fun of the popular jock."

Posted by: lobbygow on September 4, 2008 at 6:03 PM | PERMALINK

I suspect Palin won't be hitting TDS. I think the real score is Jon Stewart 100, McPOW Campaign -12.

Someone really, really needs to make that "Don't whine, just try harder," clip into an ad.

I think Simon's piece highlights one of the many mistakes Camp McPOW is making. There is no way a new comer like Palin is going to get away with "Shut up and do what I tell you!"

FUNNIEST! VIDEO! EVER!!!

Palin, you make me puke!

Posted by: MsJoanne on September 4, 2008 at 6:27 PM | PERMALINK

Chris, you are correct about the UCMJ prohibiting political activity in uniform. It really isn't the military's job. It didn't stop the GOP from doing it in the last year in CO if I remember correctly, even Larry Johnson foamed about it.

Palin's speech: long on style, zero substance, and failed fact checking, so it passed the RSR test. Please remember that the RSRs [= Rubber Stamp Republicans] are indeed brainless and lost without talking points and teleprompters. Noonan and Murphy's comments on the live mic tell me that in spite of the hoopla manufactured by Faux, they really aren't interested in going to bat for the ticket. So, while I expect Palin to entertain us for a few weeks, she will lose every policy issue and talking point because she really has no accomplishments without some baggage. Introducing oneself to America with a pack of easily debunked lies (in her own handwriting, no less, see KOS) means she will be remembered as a liar.

Consider: she didn't impress the focus groups of the "independent" voters, even in Nevada, especially with the women. If Palin's going to be an asset to the ticket she has to deliver the base (with the dogwhistle speech, she started to do that), but also the PUMA'd Hillary supporters, which is why Palin referred to HRC in her meet and greet speech. The focus group results tell me they didn't buy it.

Obama's response was still a little to classy for my taste, but I will say getting Wasserman Schultz (strong HRC supporter) on board will really undercut whatever PUMA support there is out there.

So, what's Darth and TBlossom to do to prevent Obama/Biden from following through on their threats to pursue the investigations? If the rhetoric and reports of her vindictiveness are any indication, Palin is shameless enough to b***h her way to the top of the ticket. That means the cabal won't get their stealth candidate into office to protect their evildoing.

Is Todd really a stay at home dad (and what does Hagee say about that), which basically makes him a parasite? Such fine family values on display here. IF Palin makes it a talking point or photo op, it is fair game to talk about it and criticize the campaign for doing this.

And, "uppity"??? If the RSRs were to have any hope of the minority vote (remembering the earlier theme about how Obama wasn't liked by the Latino community) they really needed to not say stuff like this. Every minority is well aware that code words like this refer to ALL of them. Why not break out the sheets and pointy hats now? Anyone seen David Duke, lately?

If it is one thing I see that has set the Obama campaign apart it is the effort at the grass roots level instead of the corporate/high roller level. This is where the community organizer sneer will hurt the RSRs. As noted by FireDogLake, however, Bradley the Chipmunk (Schlozman) targeted ACORN in MO for this kind of thing, so we are now able to see the outline of the campaign. Voters will get caged, and disenfranchised in any way possible if they are of the "wrong" kind. We will need to be vigilant to protect our rights, and if you can vote absentee or early (which we can do in my county), you may want to do that. Verify your registration. Make it impossible to steal the election.

On the last note, FDL also has a good article regarding the lack of attention to the Obama assassination attempt in Denver from the local USA Eid, and contrasts that with the hypocritical assertion about a separate harassment of McSame by a prisoner. Yes, he is one of the Rovebots installed in the purge.

Posted by: rugger0 on September 4, 2008 at 6:30 PM | PERMALINK

The Jesus as a community organizer thing is a little cute, but it misses the point.

Which is: here we have the nominee for VP for the party that has been insisting for years that social welfare shouldn't be a government function; it should be handled by charitable organizations and churches and people should decide for themselves how much they want to give to help those who are less fortunate than themselves. And she's sneering at the very people whose work is crucial to making her party's laissez-faire approach to social welfare function on even the most minimal level.

They don't just look down on poor people; they look down on the people who try to help poor people escape from being poor. Anyone who would do that rather than taking a job where they make a lot of money is a sucker, in the eyes of the Republicans.

Compassionate conservatism in action, folks.

And if you want to talk about "elitism", I don't know how you'd ever find a better example of it than that line, mockingly delivered by Sarah Palin. Here's hoping that a whole lot of people pick up on this fact and hang it around her neck.

Posted by: Jennifer on September 4, 2008 at 6:35 PM | PERMALINK

They don't just look down on poor people; they look down on the people who try to help poor people escape from being poor.

It's almost as though the Republican party is all about whipping up resentment against the poor in exchange for votes! Shocking!

You know, the problem for Republicans is that Barack Obama actually did what Republicans claim to be in support of. He's the one who started from humble beginnings to get an education, had a stable family, and worked with the poor. He's the one who made something of himself starting from very little before going into government. He's the one who was one of the "1000 points of light." And not only do those things not attract praise from the Republicans (I could understand if they ignored them), but those are the specific things that Republicans attack about him.

How about a look at the issues according to both of the presidential candidate's acceptance speeches? Take a look at what Biden said versus what Palin said. As a bonus, let's see what each has to say about their opponents.

If troops in uniform are not allowed to be used for partisan political purposes it sure is an issue. But the Rethugs would never do something like thas, would they? Just like they didn't use 9/11 victims for political gain during the 2002 midterm elections.

Seems like a lot of people were very inspired by Palin's speech. CNN reports:

"Barack Obama's campaign says it has raised more than $8 million from over 130,000 donors following Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin's speech Wednesday night. The campaign also says it is on track to raise $10 million before John McCain takes the podium at the Republican National Convention tonight."

I have been worried that the election will be very close.

Thanks to Sarah Palin energizing the Democratic base and alienating independents and moderate Republicans, I am beginning to think that Obama may win in a landslide of historic proportions.

Posted by: SecularAnimist on September 4, 2008 at 7:00 PM | PERMALINK

I would guess that very few community organizers vote Republican

Actually, there are a lot of Republican community organizers, at least in rural areas. And yes, they do help the poor. There are also a lot of volunteer firemen, animal shelter volunteers and other altruistic Republicans. They are not bad people, but the do tend to be susceptible to the idea that people on government programs are all a bunch of cons.

You know, the problem for Republicans is that Barack Obama actually did what Republicans claim to be in support of.

Don't forget, so did Bill Clinton: son of a single mother who worked his ass off to get into great schools and eventually become President of the United States.

That's why they hated Clinton so much, and it's one of the many reasons they hate Obama -- he shows that you actually can break a bit of the oligarchy's grip on power. That's part of the reason we ended up with Bush Jr. -- the elites (the real ones) had to prove that their day wasn't over and they could still get one of their own (grandson of a Senator, son of a President) into office.

Posted by: Mnemosyne on September 4, 2008 at 7:20 PM | PERMALINK

Nashville_fan: they aren't Christian, they are fascist. Blessed are the peace makers. Blessed are the meek. The one thing Christians have to differentiate is righteous, temple-clearing indignation, like when the GOP kills children through health care cuts, and selfish rage. Wisdom defines the first and finds well-chosen battles--like fighting as a community organizer. Pride is the author of selfish rage and Rove's GOP. Selfish pride will cause a woman to throw her whole family aside to become a specatcle. It causes an old warrior to forget what he fought for and align himself with his enemies.

Rage against the coming of the plight; ignore the narcissists of the right.

I posted this url in regards to another topic this morning. However, it's really worth a look for those interested in a local's take on Sarah Palin. It's well written and entertaining.

I noticed over at the War Room, Alex Koppelman is reporting that Palin's speech was a fundraising bonanza for the Obama campaign. The campaign reports that they have raised $8 million since her speech last night. The McCain campaign, not so much, raising $1 million for the same period. Perhaps, Senator McCain will let her speak more often in the coming weeks!

Posted by: Ak Liberal on September 4, 2008 at 7:28 PM | PERMALINK

First, an Obama win would be of historic proportions.

But better still, what do you think the narrative will be after McCain gets a fraction of the Palin audience? He's almost assured of fewer viewers. If the GOP is gloating about their audience (without acknowledging the fact that most were wondering what the moving trainwreck was all about), what will they say tomorrow?

Anyone?

Thanks for bringing the Open Thread to PA, Steve.

My Two:

[In August 2008], the state of Alaska under Palin's guidance sued Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne in an attempt to reverse his decision to list polar bears as a threatened species. Palin said that scientists' predictions that global warming would eliminate the ice where the bears live in summer were unreliable.

...Meanwhile:

One of Canada's five remaining Arctic ice shelves - the 4,500-year-old, 50-sq.-km. Markham Ice Shelf - has broken completely away from Ellesmere Island and drifted into the Arctic Ocean, the most dramatic sign yet of how rising temperatures and retreating sea ice are creating "irreversible" changes to the country's polar frontier.

KOS has a diary about the Troopergate. While that by itself isn't news, the police union is filing a complaint because the internal personnel records covered under federal law were leaked. It's of interest as well because the excuse was that the Palin camp gives is that Todd Palin (who should have no stake in this whatsoever) is the one who allegedly accessed the records. This tells me he's the hands-on attack dog for Sarah. Not good for the WH.

They paid $500 million to *someday* build a pipeline? What kind of contract is that? Talk about waste.

Or, was it a sweetheart deal to route some of that money (which originally came from oil companies) back around into American politics.

One Republican idea (see Cunningham) is to give contracts to small to midsized Republican run companies, so they can make big profits on Military-Industrial-Complex contracts and then feed some of it back to Republican political campaigns.

Is Ms. Palin just getting money (meant for Alaska to use) from oil companies and laundering it through Canada (or where ever TransCanada is)?

Educated, intelligent, poised, measured, dignified, honest, high standards, etc. = elitist. So who falls into that category? A few, off the cuff: George Washington, Ben Franklin, Franklin Roosevelt, Thomas Jefferson, Gen. Robert E Lee, Gen. Dwight David Eisenhower, Margaret Chase Smith, Warren Buffett, Alan Cranston, Daniel Patrick Moynihan, William Safire, John Glenn, Martin Luther King, Coretta Scott King, Janet Reno, Mister Rogers, Henry Fonda, Katherine Hepburn, Neil Armstrong, Bill Russell, Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford, James Baker, Tom Brokaw, Gwen Ifill, Walter Cronkite, Roberto Clemente, Hank Aaron, Joe Biden, Billy Graham, Bob Dole, William F Buckley, Colin Powell.... (running out of time)

Add your own elitists to the list. And ask yourself, has America come to such a pass that it is a negative to be mentioned in the same breath with those people? I wouldn't mind being on that list.
