JOB ONE.... Following up an earlier item, the McCain campaign really has to hope that cultural insecurities are running high, because it's going to take a lot of attacks on arugula to overcome the state of the economy.

According to the Labor Department's latest jobs report, the unemployment rate hit a five-year high last month, with employers slashing 84,000 jobs, worse than economists were forecasting. It's the eighth consecutive month for job losses, and both June's and July's numbers have been revised down. To date, the nation has shed 605,000 jobs in 2008.

Under the circumstances, these results are not exactly a ringing endorsement of Republican economic policies. And as Kevin noted, the juxtaposition of this week's convention in St. Paul and this week's Labor Department's jobs report couldn't be much worse.

[The latest employment numbers make] it all the more remarkable that the Republican Party just held a 4-day nationally televised convention with dozens of speakers and managed to only barely even mention the economy. John McCain finally got around to it last night, briefly mentioning "tough times" and then devoting a few sentences to the subject, but that was about it. And his heart pretty obviously wasn't in it even for those few sentences.

If McCain loses in November, that's going to be one of the biggest reasons why. Sarah Palin aside, he simply doesn't sound like he understands what's really going on out in the outside world, and when he's forced to talk about it he has nothing to say. Republican orthodoxy forbids any serious response -- forbids, in fact, even the possibility of an effective response other than yet another round of tax cuts -- so it's best to mutter a few bromides and move on. And that's what he does.

It doesn't help that McCain recently described the fundamentals of our economy as "strong," and argued that we've seen "great progress, economically" under Bush's leadership.

Responding to the same jobs report, and noting Obama's plan to raise taxes on the top 1% of wage earners, the McCain campaign responded, "The American people cannot afford a Barack Obama presidency."

One wonders if the communications office was able to keep a straight face while typing that one.

I agree with you on that last line. It amazes me that these people can flat out lie with such disregard and impunity. I know this is cliche`, but it's as if these people used 1984 as a guide on how to govern (if governance is what you can call what they do).

The republican party has lost it's soul. GOOD RIDDANCE.

Unfortunately, they are not lying, they believe it. Only wealthy Repubs are _real_ Americans.

In Indiana, McCain is running ads saying that Obama will raise taxes. There are letters to the editor from people who believe that Obama will engage in large scale income distribution. I don't see Obama fighting back at that.

It doesn't amaze me that the Repukes do it -- Nixon taught us that -- but it is amazing that the so-called "liberal media" lets them get away with it.

It's like the final days of Enron, they can't keep their lies straight anymore.

It's not especially amazing, and the corporate media doesn't just "let them get away with it" -- the corporate media actively collaborates in disseminating the Republicans' BS to the widest possible audience.

The corporate media and the Republican Party are both wholly-owned subsidiaries of America's Ultra-Rich Ruling Class, Inc. and the corporate media works hand in hand with the Republican Party and the overtly partisan right-wing extremist media to advance the ruthless class war of the ultra-rich against everyone else.

I for one, am having a difficult time maintainting a straight face while reading ANY of the in-the-tank reporting about Messiah Obama. There seems to be an abundance of 'fact-checking Palin' articles. I have a question:

Has anyone from the major media fact-checked an Obama speech lately?

Please - spare me.

So...Palin is all holed up in Alaska and, ahem, her hubby's business partner that the Enquirer says she had a fling with is trying to put an emergency hold on his divorce records.

Looks like the Enquirer scored another hit in the whole "affair" outing game.

As Fred Thompson said, if Obama raises taxes on Rich People, they will just try to make us pay them through higher prices for goods and services.

Of course, the fact that even gasoline prices are not inelastic (meaning you will pay ever more for gas because you have to, and not reduce consumption) means that Fred is basically wrong. No one bothered to point that out to the actor however. Dogma is not subject to examination after all.

When Cindy can wear 300,000.00 of clothing & jewelry at a republican convention, we know they do not know or care about people who are desperate for jobs and trying to put food on the table.

"I don't see Obama fighting back at that."

The efforts of David Axelrod at combatting the GOP lies and horseshit are near-criminal in their weak, fluttery impact. The Obama ad I saw last night on the economy is so vague and general in its presentation of factual reality that it's essentially worthless. The only redeeming feature is the use of photos of McCain with Bush.

The Bush "recovery" is the weakest ever in terms of job creation, the national savings rate has plunged to a negative, housing values are plummeting at a rate that rivals the Great Depression, the credit markets are in near-meltdown, and what we get is soft-focus stuff with a wimpy cover of a Sam Cooke song as the audio. If Obama wins, it will be in spite of Axelrod & Co.

I for one am having a hard time keeping a straight face when I read weak-minded, ignorant mental slave Lemmy Caution's robotic regurgitation of scripted Republican "Talking Points For Dummies".

These guys are so pathetic, they don't even have any actual "talking points" any more, they just chant disjointed phrases like "Messiah Obama" and "Barry Hussein" and "The One" and whatever other inanities Rush Limbaugh spoon-feeds them.

What do you expect from one of the stupidest graduates (McCain) of the U.S. Naval Academy ever? Sarah Palin transferred colleges 6 times in 6 years, before she finally eked out a journalism degree from that citadel of higher education - the University of Idaho.

Look, we have ill-informed, poorly educated D- students on the Republican ticket vs. A honor roll well-informed articulate candidates on the Democratic ticket. The only people who are going to vote for the morons on the GOP ticket are knuckle-draggers like orwell, who couldn't pour piss out of their boots if the instructions were on the heel!

Well lemmy maybe Obama isn't making the kind of blatantly false statements that a 8yr old with a computer can easily check up on.

Posted by: Gandalf on September 5, 2008 at 1:18 PM | PERMALINK

One of the themes that gets underplayed is how the Bush Administration (like many corporations) hide numbers through revisions. The pattern is you give a forecast that is optimistic. Then you revise it shortly before the actual results are ready (everyone frowns for a few days). Then you release the results, usually better than the reforecast, but at least not as bad as comparing them to the original forecast. Then you revise last month's or last year's numbers to absorb some of the loss. This way the comparison looks better and people overlook the extra loss. In the case of the jobs report today, there were actually 142,000 jobs lost if you include the revisions.

I have to agree with bluestatedon. The Obama push back on the taxes lie is down right pathetic. Obama needs to spend some money really countering the McCain relentless attack that Obama will raise everybody's taxes. Weak sister ads and occasional comments on the stump aren't going to do it.

Messiah Obama.

Obama ain't the one that walked out onto stage for his acceptance speech with a projected halo after a biopic which suggested that his life was spared while American servicemembers were killed around him because God had bigger plans for him.

Just sayin'.

Any truth to the notion that Cindy McCain's outfit for the convention totaled $300,000 as Vanity Fair estimated? And has McCain be apprised of all his houses yet?

Honestly, if the Dems can't fight back on this stuff they deserve to lose.

Is that LEMMY, or LEMMING?
Please. Obama has chunks of guys like you in his stool.

He's got the balls to go on Faux news and talk to Dildo Reilly. What about your people?

Posted by: citizen_pain on September 5, 2008 at 1:36 PM | PERMALINK

Again missing the point. Last night John McCain made a point to recognize a couple in (I believe) Ohio, saying that their investment portfolio was devastate due to the crash of the housing market.

Not a word about persons losing their homes, but heart felt sympathies for the investors behind those mortgages.

Here to we must examine what is behind the recent loss of 84K jobs. Were they outsourced, saving the company on high wages and benefits packages?

This isn't necessarily a bad thing from the perspective of Republicans. The issue is with the people who's jobs were outsourced voting for McCain because he's named a Christianist Extremist to the ticket. Without the people who's economic interest it is to vote democratic, republicans win - sort of ironic.

Obama does need to start spending all that money we've been sending him. They need hard hitting TV commericals. Be DIRECT. The economy sucks its Bush's/Republican congress's fault, McCain wants to continue.

They also need to do a spot on Community Organizers.

Open with the line:

"Sarah Palin and the Republican party don't know what Community Organizers do:"

Then feature people who run soup kitchens, organize church groups to help the poor, run sports programs, raise money for local schools, help seniors, point out MLK and Bush Sr.'s Thousand Points of Light campaign and end with the line:

This is what community Organizers do.

"

I'm not an electoral strategerist and I don't claim to know what the Obama campaign "should" do to win.

But what I personally wish they would do is simple. Every time John McCain lies, the Obama campaign should put out a press release with a big bold headline reading "JOHN McCAIN IS LYING, AGAIN". And explain, very simply and concisely and straightforwardly, how McCain is lying.

Just keep repeating the plain, simple truth: that John McCain is a deliberate liar, who is deliberately deceiving the American people.

Posted by: SecularAnimist on September 5, 2008 at 2:35 PM | PERMALINK

Everyone should read the article on Greg Palast's website, we should be very afraid of what the republicans are doing to steal this election. If they do, we will all be living our worst nightmare.

I believe "it's the economy, stupid" has a quite successful track record for the Dems.

Barack, can I persuade you to trade in the nuance for the hammer? McCain doesn't care about real solutions, he looks for something that sounds good in a 5 second slogan that the LIV can understand. And people fall for it... except when it gets as transparently stupid as the gas tax holiday.

This is GEORGE BUSH's economy. He and John McCain think it's strong.

Posted by: short fuse on September 5, 2008 at 3:35 PM | PERMALINK

Responding to the same jobs report, and noting Obama's plan to raise taxes on the top 1% of wage earners, the McCain campaign responded, "The American people cannot afford a Barack Obama presidency."

McCain's Simple Math:
"top 1% of wage earners" = "The American people"

And they can afford it just fine.

Steve Benen you are a fascist. I say this because you have a article posted at http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/09/05/politics/animal/main4419939.shtml
that does not leave a place for response. In 2008 to post an OPINION piece like this on the internet and present it as news without allowing comments makes you a fascist. take your socialism and get the HELL out of America. if you don't like it here, go somewhere they practice your desired form of government like China.

David, you either need to ease up on the meds, or verify that you are taking the right ones. CBS owns that site, not Steve. And you obviously followed the link back to here to ... leave your comment. It kind of undermines your comedy.
