FRIDAY'S MINI-REPORT.... Today's edition of quick hits:

* The investigation into Sarah Palin's alleged abuse-of-power is now on a fast-track, and will be completed three weeks earlier than scheduled.

* Due to "unique political circumstances," Alaskan lawmakers will not subpoena Palin directly. I'm confused -- if she vowed to cooperate, and then stopped cooperating, why back off, simply because she's seeking national office?

* Palin aides, however, will face subpoenas.

* Republicans apparently had a little trouble telling the difference between Walter Reed Army Medical Center and Walter Reed Middle School in North Hollywood, California.

* The television ratings for McCain's convention speech were even better than Obama's.

* Coming up in September: a vote on the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which McCain opposes.

* The McCain campaign keeps using artists' songs without permission. The artists are not at all happy about it.

* When he wants to, McCain pulls off remorse very well.

* If the media's so liberal, why did the networks give the Republican convention more airtime than the Democratic convention?

* Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) makes a renewed push to regain his title as Congress' Most Ridiculous Member.

* Last night, someone held up a sign that read "Mavrick" right around the same time McCain was talking about adult literacy. Too funny.

* Obama vs. O'Reilly, round one.

* The story about Palin, eBay, and the gubernatorial jet has already been distorted.

* And if you haven't seen NBC News' Andrea Mitchell get completely engulfed by balloons at the Republican convention last night, take a look. It's pretty hilarious.

Anything to add? Consider this an open thread.

The television ratings for McCain's convention speech were even better than Obama's.

Does that mean McCain is done with Governor Gimmick?

Of course McCain's ratings were better than Obama's. Republicans avoided Obama's speech lest they accidentally learn something. Dems watched McCain to count the lies.

the difference between viewership in Obama's, Palin's and McCain's speeches was small enough to easily be sampling/extrapolating errors.

one can only hope that it was the same 40 million people watching each. on that side by side by side comparison, Obama is a hell of a lot smarter, energetic and more convincing than McCain and a much more decent, serious, non-snarky human being than Palin.

We are dealing with a bunch of morons. I mean, they put the wrong building in the background of the republican nominee's speech at their NATIONAL CONVENTION. That is a major, major fuck up, and it shows the incompetence that pervades the GOP.

Oh well, such is life when your ranks are filled with college republicans who cheated on every test they took in college, and bozos from a Pat Robertson or Oral Roberts University that shouldn't be accredited in the first place.

The only reason why these people still have some semblance of credibility is because the media chooses to give it to them. In days gone, they would have been laughed at and mocked for their stupidity by the press.

Posted by: citizen_pain on September 5, 2008 at 5:44 PM | PERMALINK

I wonder if the ratings account for people who turned it off halfway through out of disgust and then went directly to www.barackobama.com and made a donation.

Y'know, the fake "Walter Reed" backdrop at McCain's speech is really the perfect illustration of what modern Republicanism is all about. (For those who don't know, the GOP intended to put up an image of Walter Reed Medical Center but instead put up an image of Walter Reed Middle School in North Hollywood, CA).

Think about it: you've got (1) a crass attempt to exploit the suffering of our wounded veterans for partisan political purposes and (2) a completely incompetent fuck-up in the actual execution. Evil and stupid: it's the Bush/McCain GOP to a tee.

The local scuttlebutt here in Alaska is that Hollis French is going to be removed from being in charge of the investigation, based on his biased interview today.

I would wait for confirmation from first before publishing.

Quite frankly, I hope it is finished early.

Wow. I'm listening to the O'Reilly interview now with Obama. I heard that O'Reilly was interrupting him and trying to bully him, so I expected the worst. Obama MORE than handles his business! It was very good and shows that he knows foreign policy and has thought through strategies in some of the toughest areas of the world.

Well, that and the fact that McCain is one of the only Republican politicians and/or operatives who actually served in the military, so they'd never even know what Walter Reed is.

John doesn't know how many houses he has.

His BIG night's backgtound screen had a major image snafu. (school vs hospital)

He might've been a POW for 5+ years but he also lost 5 very expensive planes for the Navy during his career as a less than Top Gun type pilot (believe me he was no Tom Cruise as Maverick!)

John picked a woman for VP who believes war against sovereign nations is god's will.

He once was against tax-cuts for the GOP (Greedy ol People) but know he's all for them.

He thinks patriotism is waving a flag and killing people before they kill us.

The only thing maverickish about this guy is the fact that he often WEARS NO TIE!!!

Even more crass than exploiting the suffering veterans have endured under this regime is 1) the actual state of Walter Reed, which as you remember became the poster child of the neglect veteran's were facing and 2) McCain voted against increasing health benefits for veterans.

Oh, that and he had no problem sending them to war under armored, ill-equipped, and without enough ground troops. He could have used is 'tremendous influence and experience' while in the senate to improve this situation. Where was it?

Obama, you reading this?

Posted by: on September 5, 2008 at 6:01 PM | PERMALINK

Had a Democrat spoken in front of the wrong "Walter Reed" picture, we'd still be hearing about how much it proves that she/he disrespects the troops, the flag, the nation, etc.

But John "Iraq? Iran? Idunno!" McCain does it, and does anyone beyond the lefty blogosphere notice?

Posted by: Chris on September 5, 2008 at 6:01 PM | PERMALINK

Forget about the Walter Reed thing, whoever decided to use that giant screen was an idiot. It was clearly designed for the benefit of the folks at the convention while the folks at home didn't really get the proper effect. Yet all the folks at the convention were already going to vote for McCain, while there were millions of undecideds watching at home who just saw McCain standing in front of green. But so it is with the Republicans: They're so busy shoring up the people they've already got that they're missing everyone else. I sure will be sad once Rove and the other Base Strategists get knocked away and they finally get someone who can campaign properly.

And what's really funny is that I didn't watch the speech and so when Atrios posted a funny picture of McCain standing in front of what looked like a mansion with a funny sign on it, I assumed the mansion was the main part of the joke. It didn't occur to me that he really would be standing in front of such a thing. It was just like he was rubbing our faces in his riches. Now I know that his people are just idiots.

I suppose the silver lining for the RNCC team is that at least they got the plane-flying-into-the-WTC footage right.

After all, if you can't hit the fear button reliably and accurately for your wacko base, how can anyone trust you to run the country?

Posted by: Chris on September 5, 2008 at 6:06 PM | PERMALINK

As far as the ratings go, Think Progress observed that CNN, MSNBC, and Faux all padded their on-air time for the RNC relative to the DNC. I wonder how much of the difference is due to that detail.

Uppity could be the new macaca. That GA rep isn't backing off, which tells me it's part of the Rove plan. The RSRs always move in lockstep on these things. Always.

Speaking of competition for wackies RSR, anyone see Michelle Bachmann? For someone actually from MN, she didn't seem to have much input at the convention.

Palin's Troopergate fast tracking sounds impressive, but let's remember a few things:
1. She's vindictive as hell, and that's why the stories from AK are only coming out now.
2. She's already started to scream "executive privelege" on her investigations, even though she said she would cooperate fully, in print.
3. Ted's probably going to help her since she's really the only hope he has. And as long as he's been around, he will know which levers to push. It's also curious that Palin won't commit either way on TeddyTubes, could this be a quid pro quo?
4. The business partner's divorce trial could be very interesting. Why else would Palin try to seal the records? It's not her divorce. My 2 cents say that she's the "other woman" which will finish her in Fundieland. Women are chattel to them (it's Biblical you know, the patriarchal idea, same as for the FLDS types), suited to be barefoot, pregnanat and in the kitchen, and while boys will be boys, girls don't have that option.
5. Look for a few more memory failures out of the aides who were subpoenaed, recalling item #1.
6. And, why else do as much as McSame's campaign has done to be sure Caribou Barbie never hears a discouraging word, or says one. If she's supposed to be ready and so hot-shot experienced, the press should be a piece of cake.

Posted by: rugger0 on September 5, 2008 at 6:08 PM | PERMALINK

The Republicans have already nailed down the pregnant-teenager's-mom vote, and according to the Enquirer they're on their way to nailing down the occasional-adultress vote. They're also going to get a lot of sympathy votes from the lame-fuckup demographic. Add these three groups to the crazified. 27%, and McCain is home free. Cancel the election.

Posted by: John Emerson on September 5, 2008 at 6:12 PM | PERMALINK

Add Virgil Goode to the list of wackies.

He's now on the warpath about anchor babies. All fine and good, but a couple of problems for him:

1. Michelle Malkin would have to go, because she fits the definition.
2. Combined with the life begins at conception theme from McSame, that means we owe citizenship to anyone conceived in the USA or flying over it. Good luck disproving that status.
3. As noted by Think Progress, the Constitution would have to be amended to do what he wants.

So, it's empty nativist dogwhistle rhetoric designed and calculated to get out the base. Nothing else, and we all know Rove's in on this too.

I'm very skeptical about those numbers for the speeches. Obama's had over half a million youtube views alone counting several different posts of his convention speech. I'm hard pressed to believe that many people would subject themselves to a McCain speech. Additionally, youtube, as far as I could tell, didn't even have the McCain speech for '08. The only one that came up was '04. This was posted, and is hilarious, but not his speech. I believe Steve posted that pbs and the democratic online feed didn't count, so that's really an indication of the actual spread in viewers. I watched on PBS myself, so add 1.

The Nielsens don't take account of PBS watchers (or C-Span diehards for that matter). What does PBS estimate their viewership was? Do people think PBS viewership for McCain was as great as it was for Obama (is PBS audience Democratic-leaning?), so that including the PBS figures might alter the final tallies and the real comparison of viewerships?

Better yet, LA Progressive magazine reports:

“So Sambo beat the bitch!”

This is how Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin described Barack Obama’s win over Hillary Clinton to political colleagues in a restaurant a few days after Obama locked up the Democratic Party presidential nomination.

According to Lucille, the waitress serving her table at the time and who asked that her last name not be used, Gov. Palin was eating lunch with five or six people when the subject of the Democrat’s primary battle came up. The governor, seemingly not caring that people at nearby tables would likely hear her, uttered the slur and then laughed loudly as her meal mates joined in appreciatively.

“It was kind of disgusting,” Lucille, who is part Aboriginal, said in a phone interview after admitting that she is frightened of being discovered telling folks in the “lower 48” about life near the North Pole.

Then, almost with a sigh, she added, “But that’s just Alaska.”

Racial and ethnic slurs may be “just Alaska” and, clearly, they are common, everyday chatter for Palin.

Besides insulting Obama with a Step-N’-Fetch-It, “darkie musical” swipe, people who know her say she refers regularly to Alaska’s Aboriginal people as “Arctic Arabs” – how efficient, lumping two apparently undesirable groups into one ugly description – as well as the more colourful “mukluks” along with the totally unimaginative “f**king Eskimo’s,” according to a number of Alaskans and Wasillians interviewed for this article.

The Sarah Palin time bomb is ticking, ticking, ticking.

Steve & Hilzoy have written numerous posts in the past few days documenting the outright lies put out by the McCain campaign. I know that the GOP has only just ended, but what has the Obama campaign done to pushback against these attacks?

I hope for some ads along the lines of "Have you heard what John McCain and Sarah Palin are saying about Barack Obama? They say that he wants to raise our taxes! But, Barack Obama plans to cut taxes for 95% of working Americans. John McCain and Sarah Palin, they'll say anything to get elected!"

Yes, but only after a last minute correction. They were poised to show the 1933 King King on the Empire State building fighting off the planes. Superimposed of course, with Obama's face.

As Andrew notes:

The 40+ million figure includes PBS' estimate. Without PBS, Palin's speech was watched by 37.2 million. Obama's speech still had more viewers, over 42 million, when adding in PBS estimates.

Which leads me to wonder about the McCain numbers too. Are we comparing apples to apples here? Or is Obama being counted without PBS and McCain with?

It's frankly not all that important, but if we're going to post it might as well make sure it's correct.

Posted by: cvcobb01 on September 5, 2008 at 6:27 PM | PERMALINK

That Republican-whore Susan Molinari was just on MSNBC and she stated McCain picked up $10,000,000 since putting Palin on the ticket. Is that true?

Also, how much did Obama take in in August? And then again after Palin's speech?

"Sambo"? She's white trash epitomised.

Now the Middle School has issued a press release distancing themselves from the "Mavrick," and the Democrats will be holding a press conference excoriating him for not knowing the difference between a middle school and a military hospital.

This is the kind of karmic blowback you get when you get the exploitative, cynical idea to use Walter Reed Army Hospital as a backdrop in the first place.

SecularAnimist -

I have some serious doubts about the veracity of this article. For one thing I lived in Alaska for 20 years and I never once heard anyone refer to Eskimos or Native Alaskans as Aboriginals. And I certainly never heard any Native Alaskan refer to themselves as 'part Aboriginal'. Given that Palin's hausband has Eskimo heritage I find it very unlikely that she refers to them as "Artci Arabs".

There is plenty of amunition to go after Palin already, going with some very questionable gossip from an unrelible source does not strike me as a smart move.

Compared to what I remember of those other clips, here, he sounded almost *fawning*. He tried to raise his voice once or twice, but subsided, when Obama kept on pushing and pushing with his arguments, not allowing himself to be bullied, yet not trying to outshout O'R.

Either O'R was off his feed (caught a stomach flu at the Repub Convention?), or else he knew he was in the presence of the next President and decided to mind his p's and q's.

Adding to the deeply uncool pile:

Although the Bush administration says that it is trying to reach a breakthrough in the Israeli-Palestinian stalemate by the end of this year, Senator John McCain and his surrogates all but ignored the issue in their presentations to Jews attending the Republican National Convention.

In closed-door meetings with Jewish activists, several leading Republicans said that progress on the peace process was not likely and will not be the focus of the next administration.

So I guess she wasn't a member after all, "they got to them" notions perhaps notwithstanding? But her husband was, that is more intimate and a sign of "judgment" than association with Reverend Wright (who at least had a distinguished military career.)

Regarding the National Enquirer claim that Sarah Palin had an affair with her husband's business partner, reddit.com is running up a story that the business partner had sought on 9/3/08 to have records of his divorce sealed, and was denied today.

Republicans apparently had a little trouble telling the difference between Walter Reed Army Medical Center and Walter Reed Middle School in North Hollywood, California.

It is especially pathetic when you know what they showed bears NO similarity to the actual building

Guess no one from Camp McPalin has ever been to visit wounded soldiers there.

But what am I saying? Who wants to have their beautiful minds disturbed by the icky affects of war. Hide those caskets and slap another red white & blue bumper sticker on the gas guzzler! Whooo! USA! USA! USA!

Plus they'd have to drive through several miles of neighborhoods full of scary brown folk to get there from the Capitol. [shudder, swoon]

Just to add to the discussion on backdrops: is it accurate that the RNC did not show the white stars on a BLUE field, only the RED and white stripes? I didn't watch enough to see a long view of the stage, but did hear that early on.

Where are Palin's scars? Do we get to see them? How about Hubby Todd's?

While I agree that the article shouldn;t be taken at face value, if there's even a breath of truth in the LA Progressive article - the remark overheard by the waitress for example - then there's surely enough for more mainstream journalists to start doing some excavating of their own. I mean, half the press corp is up there already.

Yep. Are you enjoying our oil, salmon, lumber, and minerals? -rory

No, most of your oil is exported.

No, I rarely eat fish becuase of the environmental impact of over fishing, and when I do eat them, I buy only farm raised.

No, I only buy new furniture made of recycled or reused products, but most of my furniture is second hand.

Regardless, your state's exports don't personally entitle you to the excessive amount of money our governrment is giving you. I happen to live in one of those states that gets considerably less back per dollar per capita because we have to support you.

And you whiny right wingers say you don't like the 'nanny-state.' You don't like it; you love it.

The report that more people watched McCain is based on Neilsen ratings. Nielsen doesn't track NPR, whose own figures show that many more people watched Obama than McCain. When added to the Nielsen figures, the result is that Obama had more viewers than McCain. This was reported in the Wall Street Journal today but it's being ignored everywhere.

Yeah, and the republicans again used that sickly green backdrop that made McCain look just like the old Preacher Kane who visited the family in the second Poltergeist movie--I think i originally saw that image on dkos.
Republicans are such dips.

Bloix, I think it's GREAT that so many people tuned in to hear McCain. With so many people worried about so many things, he did NOTHING to assure them on anything. Not one thing. Platitudes at best.

Obama has set the bar really, really high.

Sure, the Fox crowd tuned in, but they are pretty much in the bag for McCain anyway (unless they have an epiphany or and aneurysm.

So many others who watched both candidates speak...who do you think did a better job, McCain or Obama?

"The right-wing youth resurgence is taking shape here before my eyes and it has a strong erotic undercurrent. For the first time in American politics there is a strong alpha woman with whom mothers identify, and after whom sons lust. The GOP is playing the Oedipal card. And it could mean bloody war, fought house to house."

Another Palin piece.

She had an interest in banning books. This is not new.

But there is a fake list of books she allegedly wanted to ban bouncing around over the series of tubes. So don't run with that.

I dunno. I'm depressed. My mom has been for Obama until now. Until Palin. Mom's a church lady and has always voted Democratic (as did her father) but she also listens daily to Pat Robertson's version of the *news*. Man, I'm so infuriated with that guy. With mom too. She actually claimed I was lacking common sense because I don't believe in Jesus.

And fuck, I was merely calling her to see if she was getting in hurricane action.

Palin isn't getting subpoenaed because the state's bipartisan investigative committee is made up of 3 Republicans and 2 Democrats.

Sarah Palin's elevation to the VP slot has been good for the state party -- even with the Stevens and Young scandals lingering. They don't want to kill a good thing by forcing her to testify.

It cautions my expectations regarding what the final report will contain. My guess is that the criticisms will be heavily qualified. Possibly a white-wash.

Will the Alaska GOP turn squishy on Palin subpoenas in Troopergate? We’ve seen Dems in DC roll over for non-sworn testimony by Bush and Cheney on 9-11, after all. That and more in the Day 7 version of the Palin Follies. Oh, Heart wants "Barracuda" back, too.

Doubtful, you would be doing yourself and the environment if you would lay-off the farmed fish, especially farmed salmon. I work in the seafood industry in Alaska and I sure ain't no wingnut. I assure you that Alaska's fisheries management is among the very best in the world.

The Marine Stewardship Council has certified many of Alaska's fisheries as sustainable. The Montery Bay Aquairum has published a handy buying guide that shows what eat and what to avoid.

"Ever since Ronald Reagan's election, this is what the Republicans do every four years.
They render issues irrelevant and convert campaigns into cultural wars and personality referenda. They converted our elections into tawdry reality shows long before networks realized their entertainment value. And every four years, Democrats seems shocked and paralyzed by all of this and desperately delude themselves into believing that mean-spirited "negativity" and nastiness will alienate voters, while the media swoons at the potency of these attacks..."

This doesn't sound good.

WASHINGTON An important account in the federal Highway Trust Fund will run out of money this month, a situation that could hamper completion of road and bridge construction projects across the country, Transportation Secretary Mary E. Peters said on Friday.

Because the trust fund's highway account is draining away, the Transportation Department will have to delay payments for projects, Ms. Peters said at a news conference. Since money from Washington typically pays 80 to 90 percent of the cost of federally aided road work, states with shaky finances may have to consider curtailing projects.

I'm sorry that I don't have time to debate you all this year. It was fun before.

I like Obama/Biden more than I liked Kerry/Edwards.

I like McCain/Palin more than I liked Bush/Cheney.

As for the question of whether Obama is lying more than McCain or McCain lying more than Obama, ... .

I can understand those who question McCain/Palin. What I don't fathom is why anybody believes Obama/Biden -- they clearly can not do what Obama presented in his acceptance speech, other than a few possibilities that were vaguely presented.

Good-bye all.

I'm glad you are agreeing about the fact that McCain and Palin are lying.

In regards to what Obama/Biden can accomplish... I agree that some of those policies will need a lot of goodwill and, given that there still are Republicans in congress to stonewall, it will be a hard road.

However... The wishy-washy feel-good rethoric used by McCain, is certainly impossible. At least there wouldn't be a chance to fix the problems in America, it would only make them worse.

All that's missing is a modern equivalent to the Reichstag fire, as the Republican brownshirts terrify everybody into voting against their best interests. And that may yet come.

For the record, I didn't think Sarah Palin's speech was anything to get excited about, considering it was written for her and she read it off a teleprompter. Anyone who isn't nervous speaking before a large crowd could have done as well. The Republicans are pumped, of course, because before that, there was NOTHING to be pumped about. And that line about using career to promote change was so obviously a riff on Bill Clinton's power of our example/example of our power standing-O line. The Republicans are such followers. Why stake out your own campaign theme? Just wait for your opponent to define a successful one, then appropriate it and pretend you were the Change candidate all along. The only thing John McCain changes frequently is his mind.

Still, the idea of Palin "a heartbeat away from the presidency" (as the press can't seem to go 5 minutes without saying) should terrify any thinking being - not because she's a cold-blooded warmonger, but because she's clearly an empty suit if anything more than reading speeches is called for, and is used to getting her own way. And Cindy McCain the Plastic Shark as First Lady? Please.

Posted by: Mark on September 6, 2008 at 12:32 AM | PERMALINK

MatthewRMarler: What I don't fathom is why anybody believes Obama/Biden...

What you don't fathom is that every election, at an individual level, is the choice between those we think best represent our views. Or, to put it another way, the choice between the lesser of two evils.

You either agree with the direction that Obama/Biden has laid out, in far greater detail than McCain/Palin, or you disagree with the direction Obama/Biden has laid out, but have no rational basis on which to object.

You want to vote with your gut, fine. You want to vote with your head, fine. But your "vaguely presented" comment is little more than you blaming the candidates for your inability to make an informed decision. Cry me a river.

Please. Stop the melodramatic quivering and take a stand.

The television ratings for McCain's convention speech were even better than Obama's.

With PBS and CSpan's numbers added in, Obama came out ahead.

Posted by: Grady on September 6, 2008 at 3:44 AM | PERMALINK

To sum up,

Ratings were based on Nielsen's which don't count PBS or C-Span. If you trust THEIR numbers, Obama came out slightly ahead

More hours of the GOP convention were aired in total on CNN, MSNBC, and Fox.

Politically interested viewers were well acquainted with Biden from his long history and recently from teh Democratic primary. No one knew a thing about Palin many tuned in only to find out who on Earth she was.
