MCCAIN WAS AGAINST FCS BEFORE HE WAS FOR IT.... Following up on an item from yesterday, John McCain decided this week to start taking on Barack Obama over military spending, chastising Obama yesterday for having the audacity to support "slow[ing] our development of Future Combat Systems"

The criticism might be more compelling if McCain hadn't also lashed out at the Army's bloated Future Combat Systems modernization program. Noah Shachtman explained last night that McCain was blasting Obama for taking the same position McCain has held for years.

As Blake Hounshell notes (and as the Obama campaign confirms) the Illinois senator was "referring to Future Combat Systems (FCS), the controversial, $200 billion Pentagon procurement program, rather than 'future combat systems' as a generic concept."

McCain is, of course, extremely familiar with FCS, the Army's effort to revamp soldiers' networks, robots, and fleets of ground vehicles. Not only is it the biggest modernization project in the Army's history. But in 2006, McCain held hearings on the program -- specifically, on the shady deal between Boeing and the Army for FCS. Somehow, the contract (then estimated to be worth a mere $128 billion), was put under the federal regulations that control the purchase of "off-the-shelf" items, like Microsoft Word. Which meant next-to-no government oversight. The massive contract was being overseen by the contractors themselves -- a classic case of the fox watching the henhouse.

McCain tore into the deal, regardless -- another example of the Arizona senator's long, long history of exposing waste, corruption, and pork in the Pentagon budget. He was warned that any changes to the contract might delay FCS. McCain pushed for 'em, anyway.

So, by going on the attack yesterday, was McCain abandoning his previous position? And if so, why?

More often than not, it seems McCain gives up on reason and consistency altogether when he goes on the offensive, and just hopes no one notices. It's kind of sad to watch, actually.

It is sad until it works. If the pandering and lies were going to hurt wouldn't we see some evidence with the voters by now?

Posted by: Gaucho Politico on September 9, 2008 at 2:11 PM | PERMALINK

The Obama campaign better hammer him for this and it better not mince words- "why is John McCain lying again?

Posted by: Steve LaBonne on September 9, 2008 at 2:12 PM | PERMALINK

What Gaucho said. You are crazy if you think the corporate media is going to do anything to endanger their tax cuts.

Lies, racism, and voter suppression (see C&L today) will keep the Rs in power.

I want to know, was he in favor of bonking Vicki Iseman before he was against it?

Er... it would be said if it were losing McCain the election. So far, all I can see is 51% of the population nodding their heads in zombie-like acquiescence. Ugh.

The new McCain/Palin ad that includes the bogus claim about the Bridge to Nowhere gets an additional slam by the Anchorage Daily News. Apparently the ad uses an image/quote from ADN to justify Palin's lie.

Now ADN quotes the WSJ story and feels slightly abused:

http://www.adn.com/news/alaska/newsreader/story/520577.html

"We think many viewers will get the impression that the Anchorage Daily News article backs up the claim. But alas, it is TV ad sleight-of-hand. The article merely says she "ordered her administration to seek fewer congressional earmarks" after the bridge became a symbol of pork-barrel spending. There are no other details about the project or her role in ending it."

Was she ever "against it" before being named VP candidate?

So, by going on the attack yesterday, was McCain abandoning his previous position? And if so, why?

Because his political campaign advisers aren't the same as his Senatorial "work" advisers and they 1) didn't know that "Future Combat Systems" was a particular project in the Pentagon or 2) that McCain had already spoken out against it in the past or 3) that it was a boondoggle of vast proportions.

The fact that McCain himself apparently forgot what FCS was and that he himself was looking into its shadiness tells me something - it tells me that he's an empty suit who gets prepped by his "advisers" for where he's supposed to be standing on a day-to-day basis. That really sucks - I thought that McCain at one point actually had some substance but I guess not.

Ok enough - Obama has to take the gloves off or he's going to dump this thing. I mean really. I saw him on Olberman last night, and he couldn't even bring himself to use the word liar - what is his god damn issue? Realize that the one who looks more manly is likely to win this thing....

Was she ever "against it" before being named VP candidate? - tomj (2:22

She was never against it. Period. She was only against Alaskans having to pay for it.

I actually think Obama can have a hell of a lot of fun with this sort of idea, at McCain's expense, and still come across like a serious person worthy of the office. Every day, perhaps pre-recorded by someone else to be played back before an Obama speech, or perhaps spoken by Obama himself, a portion of time is set aside for "What is McCain/Palin lying about NOW?"

Posted by: slappy magoo on September 9, 2008 at 2:27 PM | PERMALINK

McCain is such a maverick he even disagrees with himself.

Is he trying to use some slight of hand to say that Obama is against future combat systems as a general term rather than Future Combat Systems the specific program?

Posted by: Aaron on September 9, 2008 at 2:29 PM | PERMALINK

It's September, not November. So much as a single absentee ballot has yet to be cast. McCain hasn't won anything. I hate defeatists.

NonyNony- and/or it tells you that he's in the early stages of dementia. Which I quite seriously believe to be the case.

OT, but is anyone watching Obama on O'Lielly? I never watch Bill-O (gotta keep my blood pressure down), but have watched the past two nights. I had no idea how well Colbert "does" O'Lielly - except that Stephen is funny, not just obnoxious like O'L.

Anyway, Obama has been holding his own and even been complimented by Bill-O for his toughness. He even gets a word in edgewise. Bill-O defends his interruptions saying that he's just trying to keep Obama on track and not wander. Trouble is, Obama barely gets out 5 or 6 words before O'L feels like he has to butt in. Too bad Obama doesn't speak in the language of "sound bites" (for simpletons).

Last night's show was about the economy and tax cuts and boy oh boy did O'Lielly blunder in some chatter after the Obama interview. He said that folks making less than $45K pay no federal income tax! So I took it upon myself to email him a correction, with specific examples. I wonder if he'll correct himself on air... I can't help but wonder how many of his viewers listened to that and thought 'what the heck?'.

The point is that Bill-O doesn't like Obama's plan to give tax cuts to middle class people, and to tax rich people (like himself) because he's under the assumption that middle class people don't pay income tax so what Obama is doing is taking his money and giving it to others... for free I guess? How about that: his opinion is based on falsehoods. Wow.

Oh, but its the thought that counts. McCain was against FCS because he wanted to save the military from itself. Obama was against FCS because, well democrats hate the military.

Time for some attack adds, with a background of "liar liar pants on fire", while contrasting McCain/Palin historical quotes versus spin.

I wish I could say this were sad. It is actually scary. The Republicans appeal to their base with lies, obfuscations and omissions. They count on the media not confronting them in any serious manner and their extremist behavior somehow becomes mainstream public discourse.

Posted by: John O. on September 9, 2008 at 3:08 PM | PERMALINK

The media doesn't do "nuance." Which means they can't call a LIE what it is - A LIE!

Can someone please explain to me WTF is up with MSNBC and their stupid "Truth-o-Meter?" I've never seen anything so blatantly assinine in my life. "Well, Bob, we give it a half-truth on the Truth-o-Meter! Tell them what they've won!"

Hannah:

Trouble is, Obama barely gets out 5 or 6 words before O'L feels like he has to butt in.

Yep. And I thought Bill was going to bring his A-game to this interview. I thought the idea of speaking with a future president would tamp down his sore-ass ego and bring out the remnant of the journalist inside.

Call. Me. Stupid.

Billy O is a pure-bred obnoxious prick.

How this perp manages to live day in and day out and not get his nose broke is a mystery of modern left-wing pacifism. Unless of course, he has a phalanx of bodyguards. I am shocked that no one has taken a club to this cur and either cured him or curbed him. His day of reckoning is long past due.

I mean really, can't at least someone make a mash-up, play-pretend video of Bill getting his ass kicked raw? With all kinds of wonderful POWs! and BAMs! and UGHs!

It would go viral. I guarantee it.
There is definitely a market out there for a virtual shit-kicking....

Hannah -- I watched the Bill O'Reilly interview with Obama last night as well. I watched only for that reason as I, like you, can't stand the Bill O for more than a minute. I don't know why he even bothered to interview Obama when he won't let him get more than a few words out, always having to interject his own opinions or thoughts before Obama has given his answers. Anyway, maybe someone here can give me some info. Bill O. said in the interview that revenues are up 20% under the Bush administration, which is higher than the Clinton years? I didn't hear Obama's response to this because Bill kept interrupting him. But I'd like to know where Bill got this info from and if it's true? I've looked and can't find anything that says this is true. I just have a hard time believing that.

Tell me, why was Tony Soprano such a popular, dare I say loveable, figure ? It may, as you say, be kind of sad to watch, really, but guess what ? With the complete collapse of the MSM in the good old USA, McCain will win with it.
