MAYBE HE'S FEELING SHY.... For all the talk about Sarah Palin hiding from questions, let's not forget that John McCain has suddenly discovered the benefits of abandoning his previous style of campaigning.

This was not altogether expected. McCain, while blasting Barack Obama, railed against "stale soundbites, staged rallies and over-managed messages." He described his favorite setting -- town-hall meetings -- as the "essence of democracy." McCain has credited his openness and interaction as the reason he won the Republican nomination, telling one Michigan audience in July, "I'm very proud of my record of trying to be in a situation where people can tell me their hopes and their dreams and their aspirations and their concerns just as I heard today. If I win, it'll be because of events like this."

That was then; this is now. (hat tip to Gerry Canavan)

Today marks the four-week anniversary since McCain held his last press conference (8/13 in Birmingham, MI) and three weeks since his last public town hall meeting (8/20 in Las Cruces, NM).

McCain's new campaign strategy: staged rallies with thousands of supporters. Since announcing Sarah Palin as his VP choice on August 29, McCain's has appeared at 11 rallies with his new running mate where both members of the ticket delivered a 10-15 minute stump speech. [...]

McCain has seen his poll numbers jump since dropping the press avails and the town hall meetings and instead speaking at rallies with anywhere between 5,000 and 15,000 supporters where he can deliver his intended message.

I guess he decided "stale soundbites, staged rallies and over-managed messages" were underrated.

McCain's new campaign strategy: staged rallies with thousands of supporters.

Again, McCain is obviously changing his campaign mode because it wasn't working. it just confirms Obama was on the right track from the beginning.

I'd be interested to see a comparison between the "between 5,000 and 15,000 supporters" McCain musters and the numbers Obama draws.

Gregory:
Don't forget, he's only getting that many people showing up because of Palin. When he shows up on his own, the stops aren't well attended.

Good point Joe Klein's conscience. That means if Palin goes down, McCain goes down.

What is a good substitute for answering press questions? A long history of experience in the subject of the questions. McCain hasn't addressed the press lately because he wants to focus on non-issues.

But forget McCain. Everyone is coming up with a list of questions to ask Palin. These are gotcha questions, or things that most people could not answer either, or would be unable to tell if the answer made sense or not.

These questions will not only be a waste of time but if she does a good enough job, they will harden her support.

What is needed are questions which get at how she has come to understand certain issues, not so much what her position is, because we can guess what those are.

Here are some off the top of my head:

When and why did you become interested in becoming a politician?

How did you decide to run for Governor of Alaska?

How different is the economy in Alaska when compared to the rest of the US?

What foreign policy areas require your attention in order for you to perform your duties as Governor of Alaska, and how do you remain informed about those areas?

Which legislative achievement demanded the largest amount of your personal time and leadership skills?

Over the course of a year as Governor of Alaska, how much time is required to do your job? Do you get weekends off? How much time do you get to spend with your family, or at home or on vacation? How do you think this will compare to your duties as VP?

Gawd, nothing those Vietnamese did to McCain is as demeaning as him surrendering to Karl Rove's message discipline and appeasing the Republican smear patrol. And for what? So that he can be a sideline in his own presidential campaign?!?

At the end of the day, most people have the benefit of knowing that at least they didn't willingly give away all of their dignity, honor, and self-respect - something that McCain will have to deal with for the rest of his life.

Well, now, this is fun!

I think the Poll surveys are surveying too many republicans. Sarahs speech was not very good. She stumbled thru it at one point looking to the ceiling trying to remember what she was told. McCain is an unexciting if not boring speaker.

Anyway, the amount of registered Democrats has been increasing.

Nationwide, there are about 42 million registered Democrats and about 31 million Republicans, according to statistics compiled by The Associated Press.

The Democrats have posted big gains in many competitive states, including Nevada, New Hampshire, Iowa, Colorado and Florida. They have also been targeting historically Republican southern states.

Since 2006, the Democrats have added 167,000 voters in North Carolina, while the Republicans have added 36,000. -from article by Walls

Thats 11 million more voters registered for the democrats and I notice its the Gallup poll which is mainly being touted by McCain supporters.

Further more:
Nationally, more than 2 million Democrats have been added to the rolls in the 28 states that register voters according to party affiliation, according to the Associated Press. Republicans have lost nearly 344,000 thousand voters in the same states during the same period
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/the-trail/2008/09/06/obama_helps_register_49k_new_v.html

The electoral vote [which should be trashed], of course, is more important than the popular vote.
As of Sep 11

Obama 273 McCain 238 Ties 27

Senate Dem 56 GOP 44

House Dem 243 GOP 192

The dems lead in all areas. Yet Gallup wants me to believe their polls?

Sorry, no can do.

As one of my commenters pointed out, and as you covered earlier today, he actually did do an interview yesterday. "Embarrassingly incoherent" is right.

Palin asked people to pray to GOD for a pipeline a pipeline that costs 40 billion.

And even though I am religious its easy to see that Palin is using religion to promote her agenda and war.

GOD doesnt need pipelines. Oil companies do.

It is rather funny how McCain's handlers seem to have come to the - obvious - conclusion that Grampa was getting mashed when he tried to compete against a genuinely charismatic and inspirational opponent on that newfangled televisualisation doohicky (hence the whining about Media coverage, and the segue into "He's just a celebrity!", so what they had to do was try to knock-up a zombie version of the Obama Campaign that could carry McCain close enough to the line for Diebold to 'rationalise' the election result.

That's what Palin is to McCain, and to a quite desperate GOP. A Base-appeasing blank slate they can create a persona for that they hope will allow them to hijack many of the positives Obama possesses to give the McCain Campaign a gloss they now know is attractive to the electorate.

Why do you think they've been so desperate to keep her away from the Media during what should have been her most effective period? Because once Palin comes out from behind the barricades, the magic time of the MSM musing on how her crafted mystique 'might' help McCain with (insert you own demographic) voters ends, and they start looking for answers.

This is not going to be pretty.

Seems McCain's new campaign strategy is Bush's old one. Of course, they are nothing alike;>

This is amusing- the post- since Obama avoided the media for month and literally duckerd through a curtain to avoid Rezko questions.

Sadly, CNN falls for these little "unpaid ads" every day by broadcasting portions of them as if they were news. Same boring lies every day.
