Sigh ...
Two things that are worth commenting on, but not worth their own posts. First, yet another lie from the McCain campaign:
"The campaign Friday launched a 30-second Spanish-language television ad charging that Democrat Barack Obama and his Senate colleagues torpedoed meaningful changes in immigration laws.
"The press reports that their efforts were 'poison pills' that made immigration reform fail," the ad charges. "The result: No guest worker program. No path to citizenship. No secure borders. No reform. Is that being on our side? Obama and his congressional allies ready to block immigration reform, but not ready to lead."
Why that's wrong: Media accounts cited two votes as effectively killing immigration reform last year - and Obama was on the same side as McCain in both."
McClatchy helpfully provides links to both votes: 1, 2. Just for the heck of it, I went looking for analyses of the bill's failure at the time. They don't mention any amendments by Obama. They do, however, say things like this:
"It was a victory for Republican conservatives who strongly criticized the bill's provisions that would have established pathways to lawful status for many of the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants. They were aided by talk radio and TV hosts who repeatedly attacked the bill and urged listeners to flood Congress with calls, faxes and e-mails."
And this:
"There's plenty of blame to go around. Blame George W. Bush, a president whose self-inflicted wounds have left him too politically incapacitated to deliver his own party. Blame Republicans like Jim DeMint of South Carolina, John Cornyn of Texas and Jeff Sessions of Alabama, senators more focused on generating sound bites and 30-second attack ads than on solving the nation's immigration problems. And blame Democratic senators such as James Webb of Virginia, who ducked the hard vote while hiding behind a phony compromise proposal that had no chance. Although it was Republican senators who bear primary responsibility for killing off immigration reform, all of them conspired to reinforce and justify the public's disdain for politics as usual."
But, oddly enough, Senator Obama's name does not come up.

(2) The Obama campaign pointed out in a (mediocre) ad that McCain doesn't know how to use a computer and can't send an email. Jonah Goldberg has an explanation:
"Well, I guess it depends on what you mean by "extraordinary." The reason he doesn't send email is that he can't use a keyboard because of the relentless beatings he received from the Viet Cong in service to our country."
This won't work. For one thing, a variety of press reports claim that McCain uses a Blackberry, so he can't be wholly incapable of using a keyboard. (John Cole has pictures.) For another, Jonah Goldberg might not realize this, but there are a lot of products out there that are designed to allow people with disabilities to use computers. For people with motor disabilities, or just a desire to avoid carpal tunnel syndrome, speech recognition software can be a godsend. It's not hard, it doesn't involve using your hands, and we know that McCain can speak perfectly well.
If McCain were an ordinary private individual, I might wonder whether finding out about this and then setting it up would be too great an obstacle to getting on line. But McCain has a personal staff whose job it is to figure things like this out. So: no, Jonah, I don't think we can put this down to his experience as a POW.
UPDATE: Wait a minute: the Viet Cong? Does Jonah Goldberg think that John McCain was imprisoned by the Viet Cong?

Beatings from the Viet Cong? Sweet jesus, can he be that ignorant?

I think that post by Jonah is proof that there is literally nothing he can say that is so stupid that it would get him fired. Conservative welfare indeed. Heh.

Another lame Obama ad. No wonder he's getting his ass kicked in the polls. He should take a page from the NARL people who whomped on McCain for facilitating sex crimes against kindergartners.

No doubt, the Obama ads are too weak to believe. Why do they bother?
McCain, on the other hand, WINS AGAIN!!!!! In the end, nobody cares if he ran a filthy campaign - except the loser Dems who will cry for another 4 years while the Republicans gloat. And even the press occasionally mentioning that the ads are dishonest is weak tea. Filth wins every time - and McCain (Republicans) are perfectly at home in the sewer.

Don't we have a quote from McCain saying he doesn't yet know how to use a computer? So what is this bullsh*t? Jonah should be dragged out into the streets and beaten with copies of his own book. As a sign of how lame he is, no comments are allowed on his blog so he can wax poetic without any blowback.

"we know that McCain can speak perfectly well."
Yes, but did you know that aside from assisting the Viet Cong with anti-American propaganda, John McCain wasn't aloud to speak for nearly 5.5 years?
On a side note:
What sense is there in the AP reporting that "whites" are giving John McCain a slight edge over Obama in the polls at this point?
The largest racial/ ethic voting block in the country is responsible for this edge?

I'm a little annoyed that when Republicans bother to remember Latinos, they only remember in terms of immigration. What, like Latinos aren't concerned about the economy or health care? Unlike some people, we are not single issues voters and we do happen to know which party is better on immigration. John McCain's home state is where they have crazy sheriffs solely focused on the persecution of "illegal" immigrants.

Isn't this the same immigration reform proposal that John McCain said he wouldn't support when he was running for the Republican nomination?

Congrats, you've hit the big time when people start vandalizing Wikipedia just to try to disprove you after the fact.

Attacking because he can't use a computer? Whoa. That's biting stuff.
(Obama, fire your staff. They're idiots. That's such a bad ad that it wouldn't be unreasonable to think that they're moles.)

Amusing ourselves to death. This country will spend the next 6 weeks talking about pigs and lipstick and flag pins and keyboards and we'll end up with another 4 years of hell. We Americans are so fucking stupid; we deserve what we get.

Watching the GOP reach out to the Latino vote? ha ha fucking ha, they've lost that vote for generations with their xenophobia. The only Latino republicans left are those cuban assholes in Miami.

They may not want to describe McCain not using a computer because of a severe disability. Being severely disabled to that extent and being 72 years old may not benefit them.
Don't we have any concern trolls from the democratic blogs that can push this issue on them? Or is everyone just too disgusted to go there?

Kids you might not have noticed but the tables have turned on McCain. His low down lying campaign is becoming the topic of conversation all across America. He is being called a liar by just about everybody he encounters. Witness the nice ladies on the View. Sarah Palin's shooting star is starting to fade as folks figure out that she is not the reformer she claims to be. I have a hunch McCain is about to lose his bounce.
All that said I do have to admit that the Obama ads are lame. I wish Barack would punch a little harder. He has to show me he will fight for himself. That way I will know that he will fight for you and me.

I'm not seeing the fight, and that is pissing me off - I was afraid that there wasn't a hot enough fire in his belly, and I have seen no evidence that I was wrong.

Neither God nor man has invented the assistive device for Jonah Goldberg's disability.
Of course McCain's inability to use a computer is a consequence of his having been a POW. Reflexively, idealogue Jonah Goldberg will echo McCain's stock excuse for his every shortcoming and for anything that goes wrong. Flip-flopping? POW. Lying? POW. Late for dinner? POW. Hang nail? POW.

Jonah Goldberg is a self-admitted fat little myopic pig who couldn't get in the Army even with today's reduced standards, which makes it easy for him to be a warhawk since he'll never be called on to live up to his bullshit.
He's the son of Bitch-of-Belsen Lucianne Goldberg, she who secretary conned everyone into doing what was necessary to set the "outing" of the Lewinsky scandal in motion.
Like mommy like son. He gets his "facts" from the same unmentionable place she did hers, when he sits on the porcelain god and reaches down between his legs to thumb it all out.

Note that Goldberg The Doughy Pantload has to refer to McCain's "beatings" because he's afraid calling it torture would invite comparisons to present-day American policy. It's weird, though -- if he's willing to support the objectively pro-rapist Palin, Goldberg should just come out and admit he's pro-torture, too.

Don't assume that because Obama's ads aren't as nasty as McCain's that they're ineffective. For one thing, Obama's supporters know how to use web spots, chain e-mails and You-tube better than McCain does. For another, there are a lot of third-party ads out there, and not from fishy 527 groups but from respectable environmental groups and such, that blast McCain a lot harder. Obama doesn't have to say "I approve this message," but the message gets across. Yes, it's a devious tactic, but hey, we learned it from Karl Rove, why not use his own methods against the GOP?
Posted by: T-Rex on September 13, 2008 at 9:10 AM | PERMALINK
This is actually a really bad ad - not because of the "war wounds keep me from using a computer" thing, but because there are *a lot* of older voters who cannot use a computer or cannot use it well.
No doubt the idea was to get younger voters thinking that McCain is out of touch, but given the proven track record of older votes to vote, this ad was clearly a mistake. They can't keep doing this kind of stuff and win the battleground states. It will be death by a thousand cuts.

If McCain has one or two fingers on each hand and can move his arms, he can type. There are millions of index-finger typists in the world, and the rate can be surprisingly fast.

Uh... if a blackberry isn't a computer, then what is it? What does one use a blackberry for if not sending and receiving e-mail? And more importantly, why do they put a
386 or ARM processor in there, what a gigantic waste of money! You would think that using something other than a windows PC would be seen as a cool thing. (Hi I am an Obama.. and I am a MacCain!) Seriously what else could he possibly use a blackberry for? Your whole argument is internally inconsistent you incompete... ehh
nah, seriously?
Yeah, your Right, the vibrate mode... sorry, no I guess I get your point... we better get Ariana on this.

How is this an insult to people who cannot or do not use a computer? I cannot perform heart surgery and do not understand exactly how Wall Street works, so am I insulted by medical and financial experts who do? NO! I am insulted by people who blast socialism and welfare and gladly accept the bailouts by my tax money because "they are too important or critical to the U.S. or global economy to be allowed to fail." When I cannot pay my bills because of either bad decisions or unexpected shifts in my life path, will the government bail me out? BTW, Unemployment Insurance does not pay all the bills. They will come after my assets and garnish my wages in a heartbeat.
Speaking of socialism and government subsidies, how much has John McCain ever earned that is not a payment DIRECTLY from the U.S. government? Aside from Cindy's wealth, how much is he worth? He receives a Senator's salary & health benefits, at least one 100% disability pension for his injuries during VietNam...100% disability, so how can he still work and be paid? I think he also receives some retirement or Navy pension (I could be wrong, since I am just going from memory). He was even paid for his time in Hanoi when the "Viet Cong" held him captive as a POW!!! For 5 1/2 years!!! Was he the only person that was captured and held captive? Must be, since he never mentions anyone else and has not had another POW from his time appear with him on the campaign, has he? So, what jobs has he held in the "private sector" that qualifies him to run this country?
So many questions...
I am committed to Oneness through Justice and Transformation

Doughy pantload: "The reason he doesn't send email is that he can't use a keyboard because of the relentless beatings he received from the Viet Cong in service to our country."
His arms were crippled when his aircraft was shot out of the sky and he failed to bail out correctly. After four days in captivity he softened and cried for a doctor.

Quick note to St John & others who keep harping on Mc Cain receiving disability pay. What Mc Cain receives is his retirement pay for over 20 years of active duty service (including his POW time, of course) in the US Navy, which he would receive whether or not he was declared disabled. The difference is, regular retirement pay is taxable while disability pay is not. My info comes from my son who recently retired from the Army with partial disability, or I would not know this either.
We have many, many examples of issues to slam him with. These ginned up attacks with no basis of fact serve only to harm our own credibility.

Coming in late, but McCain in the interview of http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/13/us/politics/13text-mccain.html?_r=4&oref=slogin&pagewanted=print&oref=slogin&oref=slogin&oref=slogin says:
Mr. McCain:
"I use the Blackberry, but I don’t e-mail, I’ve never felt the particular need to e-mail. I read e-mails all the time, but the communications that I have with my friends and staff are oral and done with my cell phone. I have the luxury of being in contact with them literally all the time. We now have a phone on the plane that is usable on the plane, so I just never really felt a need to do it. But I do – could I just say, really – I understand the impact of blogs on American politics today and political campaigns. I understand that. And I understand that something appears on one blog, can ricochet all around and get into the evening news, the front page of The New York Times. So, I do pay attention to the blogs. And I am not in any way unappreciative of the impact that they have on entire campaigns and world opinion."
So he uses a cell phone, which requires use of keyboard in some sense (the numeric one) as well. And note the comment about blogs, which is cute (I suppose he reads them on the screen or looks at printouts, like of this one! He may be reading this comment soon, hey - Hello John, I think you tell a lot of fibs lately and could you please stop? ... ;-O
