GOLDEN PARACHUTES.... The only consistent element of John McCain's recent rhetoric on economic issues is that he's just not thinking things through. In the latest example, McCain has been, in true populist style, railing against "golden parachutes" for CEOs.
The more lavish compensation packages are part of McCain's economic pitch, the more likely he'll face questions about former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina's golden parachute. And yet, as of this morning, he was apparently caught completely off guard.
On NBC's "Today," Meredith Vieira told McCain, "You have said, senator, that there are a lot of reasons for this financial crisis, but you have said, bottom line, it's those fat cats. It's the greed of Wall Street. And you said, you promised ... to crack down on CEOs who walk away with huge severance packages. And yet the person that up until recently was your public face really on your economic policies was Carly Fiorina.... She was fired in 2005. But she left with what I think was a $45 million golden parachute while 20,000 of her employees were laid off. She's an example of exactly the type of person you say is at the root of the problem."
McCain replied, "I don't think so." When pressed, he added, "I think she did a good job as CEO in many respects. I don't know the details of her compensation package."
Reminded that Fiorina received a $45 million golden parachute after being fired while 20,000 of her employees were laid off, McCain stumbled a bit before concluding, "I don't know the details of what happened."
Hewlett-Packard didn't exactly excel under Fiorina's leadership. The company's stock fell 55% during her tenure, and as Vieira emphasized, she was fired. As "punishment," she walked out the door with $45 million and, soon after, became an advisor to a leading Republican presidential campaign.
This certainly seems like the kind of greed and mismanagement the new McCain should disapprove of, doesn't it?

I didn't have a golden parachute in Vietnam.

Her $45 mil doesn't count since she's working for McCain. Only executives who work for Democrats are a problem.

Not only is John McCain trying to pull the wool over the eyes of citizens, but he's doing it in a way as to show off his lack in preparation. I mean, wouldn't you have some sort of answer ready for this type of question?

As long as she spent that $45 million on an unknown number of homes, she's not really rich. Or something like that.
I can't believe he wasn't ready with anything other than the Reagan defense. What a loser.

If McCain were running against a white southerner this newsbite would be a 100,000 pound weight dropped on the lid of his presidential campaign coffin.
This guy is not fit to lead. Wake up America.

He doesn't know the details about her tenure at HP? Why would he choose someone to have a leading role in his campaign without vetting her??? Rhetorical question, natch.

Heh. He's doing better than that. He's doing it in such a way as to show off his lack of keeping up with current events in the newspaper. Jeebus - Fiorina's golden parachute was big news when the shareholders showed up at the door of HP and demanded her head. You didn't even have to read much more than the Business section of any major newspaper to see this story.
How the hell did his campaign staff NOT have an answer ready for this one? Hell, he could have just whipped out a "well, I'm speaking specifically of financial institution CEOs - manufacturing CEOs should get what the market will bear" line. It's a dodge, but it would at least be enough to muddy the waters and get onto the next question. This just makes him look like a doddering old man spouting talking points handed to him by his handlers.

Not surprising, is it?
He doesn't know the details of Palin's background.
He's not too familiar with how the economy works.
And yet he has a 50% chance of winning the election.
WTF?!

All the brilliant software and hardware engineers who create and manufacture the products that make HP successful get paid peanuts, while some know nothing CEO rakes up more dough than any human being could use in a lifetime just for failing at her job. It's just crazy in America, this winner-take-all philosophy. And we are being "governed" by these people. How can anything ever change?
And all the media pundits who shape our opinions are members of the this top .1% class. How can we expect them to be anything but self-serving as they get paid millions to blather away at us?

It'll never end. There is nothing wrong with conservatism, but this republican party has divorced its long held conservative ideology and wedded a younger, hotter and greedier-me-first-and-last heiress ideology.
Palin, the celebrity lipstick, the finger pointing and refusal to have a conversation of substance is succeeding at driving people away from the election - except for End of Worlders who see a chance for divinity.

1. Is McCain telling the truth? Did he meet Fiorina, like her, put her on the campaign team and not ask any questions about her background?
2. Is McCain lying? Does McCain know perfectly well Fiorina got the golden parachute, but he figures acting dumb is better than admitting it? And is this the best dodge team McCain can figure. NonyNony's dodge is better.

The stories today drive home the old saying about people who live in glass mansions. This story and the Rick Davis story in the times are brutal for McCain. The wheels are coming off the straight talk express.
Has anybody looked at the SurveyUSA VA poll just out this morning. Obama up by 6% in Virginia. Wow.

McCain replied, "I don't think so."
McCain really doesn't have much respect for women. He has a history of cursing at men, but threatening women with much more direct consequences. Now, Fiorina says he's not qualified to lead a Fortune 500 company, the View ladies call him a liar, and Viera challenges him to defend Fiorina. I think Vesuvius is going to blow any day now. And I really, really don't think he can stand Mooseburger Molly.

Holy shit. What are those respects McCain is using to judge Fiorina as a good HP CEO?
This man belongs nowhere near the White House. This is the worst campaign I have ever seen. Why is it again that he is running in the mid-40s in the polls?
Don't worry - I already know the answer.

Short answer to both: yes! This seems to be his m.o. as of late. Think about the Spain/Zapatero kerfuffle. He obviously got confused and gave a muddled answer to an otherwise straight-forward foreign policy question, but instead of admit that he "misspoke", the campaign said he meant what he said: A McCain administration would handle Spain like Iran or Venezuela. Of course the big one is the Palin pick. McCain obviously did no serious vetting and whenever it becomes glaringly obvious that neither McCain nor his campaign had absolutely any clue about her views or background on an issue, their reply is "yes we did. Absolutely." "But if that's the case," the response always comes, "it suggests you are either utterly incompetent or completely insane." "No we're not," they'll say.
And then the press shrugs and goes on to the next question, like where Palin gets those fabulous glasses.

John McCain is not in charge of his campaign and hasn't been for a long time. His ex-Rove handlers make the decisions and just inform him later.
His age-riddled faculties are failing so quickly that he just accepts what's put in front of him because he doesn't have the capacity for more direct input.
All he cares about is being the candidate anyway so why spend the mental energy, right?

Leaving aside the substantive issues, it's electoral malpractice for McCain not to have a better answer than that ready for this obvious question. I dunno if the man is senile or just native stupid, but this is pathetic. Pwned by Meredith Vieira? Pathetic.

Jonas,
They "vetted" Palin by reading her Wikipedia entry, found via Google. At the time, they saw nothing out of the ordinary.
In the age of Google, some (McCain Campaign 2008) are inclined to mistake its utility for comprehensive, cogent, exhaustive research and analysis.
Posted by: gang green on September 22, 2008 at 1:16 PM | PERMALINK
McCain was not prepared to answer the question from Vieira because he was on GE's morning 'news' program. No one, liberal or conservative, would have figured a news reader from NBC would ask a Republican presidential nominee a challenging follow-up question.

He's neither. He just thinks most voters are proudly ignorant and will only vote with their glands. They'll vote for the candidate that validates their worldview even in the face of overwhelming evidence that their worldview is not accurate.
His biggest mistake may be the assumption that turnout will favor his likely fans.
If there is a huge Democratic turnout, Obama has a good chance of winning provided the voter caging strategies are uncovered and defused soon enough.

Well ya see, McCain is all for equal pay for witless CEO Golden Parachuters. He's all about men and women getting the same millions after they ruin lives stemming from their incompetence. Or maybe she's in their to clean up the pay issues like Joe Kennedy cleaned up the market for FDR. I know it funny, but McCain can't even be bothered to tell a plausible lie, he just says she did a hecka of a job.

I think its 1. He's often unprepared. He's obviously impulsive and finds all these questions about the why's and how's uncomfortable. But, still, he could have easily made a case for Carly (she's a recovering golden parachute recipient, dont blame the CEO's blame the boards, etc), but he lacks the ability to think on his feet. So then he must resort to 2. Its always easier to lie.

What possible reason could a moderator have for fixing other posters' typos? Do they disrupt the flow of conversation? Violate the TOS? Reflect in any way on the moderator's own writing skills? Reflect on the site in general?
This is control freakery times 1,000. I have never heard of another moderator who does this anywhere. I'm in a mods' forum so I've just got to ask them if any of them subscribe to this.
Meanwhile, if our own mod really believes that editing typos out of other people's posts is a principle of good moderation, is there some reason why she can't start by fixing a few of her own?
