Contact you local affiliate and the networks and demand accountability and visibility on the issues. If McCain and Palin are not willing to face the cameras and press, then Obama has to hold daily press conferences and expose the recalcitrance of the Republicans to be open. Pull all Obama ads from the networks and save the millions of dollars for ads. Only use the free media with press releases and news conferences. If McCain makes a noise, hold a press conference to rebut his lies. Pay nothing to the media. Let the soak McCain's campaign for their financing.

I would think that if Dodd and Frank and Reid and Pelosi agree on the terms of a deal and Bush/Paulson agree, Congressional Republicans would have a hard time blocking it, and if they block it on McCain's signal, it would be a disaster for McCain.

His comments about transparency and a return to taxpayers are entirely cribbed from what Dodd has already said publicly. We know those elements will be included in the bill.

It would be interesting to see Obama come forward on this and propose to McCain that they lead their parties in seeking a bipartisan solution. Put the electoral politics aside for the moment, and work together.

I think that would be a very smart thing for Obama to do.

We have an unprecedented opportunity here. Economics, like most social sciences, has the weakness of being unable to easily create observable experiments to support a thesis. Economists, conservatives and business leaders have been screaming for years now (since the 1970's) that government regulation is inefficient. The free-market is the key to economic prosperity. The most frightening words are, "I'm from the government and I'm here to help."

Fine. Let's put it to the test. On the one hand, the treasury can buy back mortgage-backed securities at their current, market derived, fire-sale prices, no strings attached. On the other hand, they'll buy them at their hold to maturity rates. However, if a firm wants that, then they have to agree to a stricter set of regulations, executive compensation limits, and restructuring of the mortgages in these securities to keep people from losing their homes. Then, in 2, 5 and 10 years we can compare stock prices of the different firms that participated in both. Either the wild and wooly free-marketeers will be vindicated, or exposed as the greedy bastards that I suspect them to be.

Here's a two sentence proposal for solving this crisis, which I've been trying to get to someone with an audible voice. It works by spending a small amount of money to remove uncertainty at the front end.

1. The federal gov't takes over the mortgage _payments_ of anyone that isn't paying them. (cost ~$2B/month*)
2. The federal gov't extracts ~$2B/month worth of pain from the people that got us into this mess (Revenue: ~$2B/month**)

er...That's it. No $1T bailout required. Anyone that says otherwise is trying to rob you (and me).

*Given that there are ~1M mortgages likely to go into default over the next year,and that the average monthly payment to keep them current is ~$2000, we can see that all the problem mortgages could be kept current for ~$2B/month.

Note that if the mortgages are guaranteed to be kept current by the gov't, then all the $45T worth of wall street gambling on them becomes moot.

**The details of who this is and how to recoup the money can be argued about ad nauseam. The main thing is, it won't happen in the context of a trumped-up crisis. Everything from taxing financial execs who earn >$1M/year to taking equity in houses in exchange for tenancy, rent and/or community service could be on the table.

I've talked to people from across the spectrum, including staffers from Keith Ellison and Michelle Bachman’s office about it, and I’ve yet to hear anyone argue against or even disagree with it.

Is the core of this problem really any more complicated than this? This isn't my field and I really want to know.

In case no one has noticed, this is 9/11 all over again in the financial markets, which was what the attack on the World Trade Center (get the connection?)was. Our financial markets are failing due to lack of interest and oversight, just as the attacks on 9/11 were the result of lack of interest in the information coming to us daily. We have the opportunity to make a different response to this "attack". If we react in panic, as we did after 9/11, then we will end up with the same result: global chaos and the rapid expansion of "terrorist wings" that feel they are left with no alternative but to attack the system that has taken their "rights". If you and your family, whatever that means to you, are deprived of a means of livelihood, your home and healthcare, how might you react? Will you stand by while CEOs reap massive compensation for failure or even for guiding a profitable enterprise? Is anyone worth over 300 times your value? This is not about money; it is about power and the illusion of control over others. I won't contribute $2,300 to this bailout without significant controls and accountability put in place. Transparency or no deal. Show me the bank accounts of every principal, how they spend their money and where they place it. Who they support in the political system and how they benefit. The IRS can access my assets at will; I want the same power to access the assets of those receiving the socialist bailout.

In other words, the plan doesn't appear to be transparent, or in market terms "free".

Most important, it doesn't appear to guarantee fairness, where fairness means that the money goes where it needs to go. Without looking at all possible assets, how can this information even be known?

I also wonder about the potential for the government to accumulate bad debt up to the full $700,000,000,000. At that point, the market would be frozen again.

One final question: have these types of instruments been banned, or could new securities be issued next week which will need to be bailed out next year?

Okay, one more question: what if banks just start lending money to non-Americans for property outside the US? Providing liquidity for these firms doesn't mean that they will invest in the US with the new money.

I think this is where a guy auditioning for President should show a little leadership. In a crisis, you don't wait for something to get to your desk, and see whether you like it. You've got to get out there and put your own proposal on the table.

Swedish gov. demanded an equity stake in the bailed out banks so that taxpayers could participate in the upside gains after the crunch passed. Taxpayers initially payed 4% of their country's GDP (!!) like 700 billion is currently about 4-5% of ours, and they finally received 2-3% back, after they were able to sell off the distressed assets later and realize upside gains, while the shareholders of the banks were wiped out and the top management penalized, in terms of pay downgrades, no bonuses, etc. AS IT SHOULD BE.
