ABOUT THOSE TAX RETURNS.... Remember, she's on the ticket because she's a "reformer."

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who has made a crackdown on gift-giving to state officials a centerpiece of her ethics reform agenda, has accepted gifts valued at $25,367 from industry executives, municipalities and a cultural center whose board includes officials from some of the largest mining interests in the state, a review of state records shows.

The 41 gifts Palin accepted during her 20 months as governor include honorific tributes, expensive artwork and free travel for a family member. They also include more than $2,500 in personal items from Calista, a large Alaska native corporation with a variety of pending state regulatory and budgetary issues, and a gold-nugget pin valued at $1,200 from the city of Nome, which lobbies on municipal, local and capital budget matters, documents show.

It prompted Mark Kleiman to ask a good question: "When are we going to see Sarah Palin's tax returns?"

Obama and Biden have released their tax returns, and McCain kinda sorta did the same. So, when will Palin -- who recently emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in government -- follow suit?

She'll release them right after the conclusion of a full-scale Troopergate investigation?

Lay off Sarah, liberals.

She's the dream of every red-blooded American male - a woman who can hunt, fish and be a governness, and still have time to perform her maternal and domestic duties.

She'll turn them over after Putin finishes his fly-over the Alaskan Capitol and she can surface from her undisclosed location...

I thought this was required?

Oh, come on! She thought when they said, "per diem?" they were saying "purty mom," so she said, "Yes" and "Yes," again - without blinking.

The question in all of this is, of course, "Why not come clean if there is nothing to hide?".

I'd bet a glass chandelier on Ebay that neither the per diem money or the brib . . . uh . . . I mean . . . gifts were reported.

And per diems and airline tickets for Todd for official business and in this latest gifts revelation.

Again, come on, Saraaaahh! You're looking more and more like a lying pit-puddy!

"When are we going to see Sarah Palin's tax returns?"

Right after the election. I'm still wondering when are we going to see Palin actually be a reformer instead of just playing one on TV.

Posted by: ckelly on September 26, 2008 at 4:10 PM | PERMALINK

Why would she? She's on the McCain/Palin ticket!

Posted by: TBone on September 26, 2008 at 4:11 PM | PERMALINK

She'll release her tax returns when the liberal media will show them proper deference.

Posted by: mg on September 26, 2008 at 4:14 PM | PERMALINK

Would these gifts be taxable?

Posted by: Danp on September 26, 2008 at 4:14 PM | PERMALINK

I think she'll be gone "for family reasons" within a week.

On a related note; Giuliani, and significantly, his current wife were on McCain's plane travelling with McCain to tonight's debate with him. Hmm... What's up with that?

Sarah needs those novelties to spruce up her cabin to impress all the DC officials, supreme court justices, and foreign heads of state she'll be bringing up to Alaska for hunting and fishing trips. This will be Sarah's official role as VP. Ted Stevens played the same role before her. These are not gifts. They are investments in Alaska's future.

She did declare them for state reporting requirements, so they should be listed as income if she kept and used them. I'm wondering more about the per diem listed as income (as it should be), but you put anything by that sanctimonious twit and her slimy husband?

Posted by: colonpowwow on September 26, 2008 at 4:19 PM | PERMALINK

As soon as she finds them, she filed them somewhere with her wisdom, honor and (insert Palin accent) "vast" foreign policy experience. With the tax returns she'll have to "try to find you some and bring'em to ya".

Speaking Alaskan English this time, I meant to say, "but you can't assume anything done legally and ethically . . . etc."

Half an hour after hell freezes over?

there was an article regarding this earlier this week (I think it was on CNN)... apparently the tax filings were due this week, and the McCain-Palin campaign had their dates mixed up and had to file an extension. They are slated to file her income and tax disclosures the day after the scheduled VP debate... (how convenient)

colonpowwow - thanks, and thanks for typing slowly, too. :)

a woman who can hunt, fish and be a governness,

Governness?

Haw!

betagreg -

They can also ask for one more extension (4 days, I think). Any bets on whether they do that or not?

If she does as well at the debates as I'm picturing, I think they'll go for one more extension.

LOL

Sorry, man. Heat of the moment and all that.

Go Obama/Biden!

Posted by: colonpowwow on September 26, 2008 at 4:37 PM | PERMALINK

Wouldn't you have thought that tax returns would be the first thing the McCain campaign would want to see before nameing her VP. If Obama can't beat these people the country is in even more trouble than even I imagined.

Demanding to see the tax returns of Governor Bible Spice is sexist and undefferential.

"When are we going to see Sarah Palin's tax returns?"

When she releases her medical records.
In other words: Never.

She is serial liar. She can obviously lie about anything without blinking. So why believe anything that comes out of her holy piehole?

Ergo, I've got no reason to trust she really had Trig, and one outstandingly good reason for why she'd lie about the whole thing. I know we've moved on from this story, still it doesn't pass the smell test. Never has. Until medical records are released recording that pregnancy, count me skeptical...

Posted by: koreyel on September 26, 2008 at 4:52 PM | PERMALINK

So, I guess she has never said, "Thanks, but no thanks."

Posted by: Jabari on September 26, 2008 at 5:19 PM | PERMALINK

I've got no reason to trust she really had Trig,

Me either.

What woman who's beginning labor (and already had 4 children) would get on a plane for an 8-hour plane ride. And, then when you get where you are going, pass up a major medical hosptial to drive 45 minutes to a smaller hospital in Wasilla-- especially when you know you have a high-risk pregnacy (and a 44 year old woman having a down-syndrome baby is high-risk.)

Also, if you know you aren't going to abort --why have pre-natal screening?

Doesn't pass the common sense test.

Yes, The Killa From Wasilla is such a good mother. It's every mom's dream to have their teenage daughter knocked up before she graduates high school!

Posted by: Lew Scannon on September 26, 2008 at 5:48 PM | PERMALINK

Tax returns? What tax returns? Ask the First Dud; it's his business to see to the mundane tasks like that, while she's "governessing".

Lew Scannon, @ 17:48,

To me, a pregnant teenage daughter doesn't, necessarily, spell "a bad mother"; s**t happens, especially with teenagers. Their raging hormones, the (usually painful) transition from childhood to adulthood, the general rebellion against adults (you ain't gonna tell me *nuthin'*)... It's almost a miracle that more teens aren't getting pregnant at 12.

OTOH... Dragging a 3-day old infant -- and a special needs one, at that -- to the office with her, exposing him to who knows what germs... That *does* spell a lousy mother, either uncaring or stupid. Especially if she weren't nursing (I'd really like to know whether she was or wasn't; that would certainly decide the "is Trig hers or not" issue for me) and giving him some immunity that way.

What's the difference between a hockey mom and a governor? GRAFT.
