SOMETIMES, A DIG IS JUST A DIG.... There was a point a couple of months ago in which campaign reporters, at the McCain campaign's urging, began to see the word "confused" as an ageist attack. So, if someone were to point out that John McCain is confused about whether the U.S. can maintain a long-term troop presence in Iraq, this was necessarily insulting, whether he's confused or not.

The argument was premised on the notion that those of us who aren't senior citizens, apparently, don't get confused. In reality, the McCain campaign was so concerned about the age issue, it pressed reporters into hair-trigger sensitivity on the issue.

We're seeing it again today. Robert Gibbs, the Obama campaign's communications director, appeared on MSNBC this morning, talking about the crisis on Wall Street. Time's Mark Halperin asked about the political implications and recent polling trends, and Gibbs responded, "What I do think in the last two and a half to three weeks -- including that last debate -- that people got a sense of who is steady in a crisis and quite frankly who's erratic in a crisis."

The "Morning Joe" panel pressed Gibbs on the "erratic" claim, and he responded, "Just yesterday, John McCain said we shouldn't fix blame. He took a breath and then fixed blame. He said the fundamentals of our economy are strong, and he flip-flopped. He opposed the bail-out of AIG, and then he supported it. This guy zig-zags. Look, if he's driving a car, get off the sidewalk."

People chuckled, and the show went on.

But in response, some observers are crying "foul." The Politico's Jonathan Martin said Gibbs took an "age swipe" at McCain, and his comments were intended to remind voters of "images of elderly drivers who have plowed into pedestrians in recent years." Similarly, Time's Michael Scherer blasted Gibbs for deliberately, and foolishly, offending older voters.

Gibbs is a very sharp communications director, and I suppose it's possible that his comments had an underlying meaning, but I kind of doubt it. The message he wanted to emphasize was the "erratic" line, not the driving metaphor, which was an obvious afterthought.

Besides, aren't there dangerous young drivers, too? Maybe the political world is being a little overly sensitive on this?

Now we know which "reporters" will uncritically write exactly what McCain's press shop tells them to.

Ah! to suffer from the stupidity equal to the McCain campaign and its surrogates in the press and the other media.

Posted by: gregor on September 30, 2008 at 12:41 PM | PERMALINK

Being overly sensitive is Rule #1 in the Republican playbook. If you have no substantive issues to run on, start blowing chunks and try to stir up some fake outrage at anything that moves.

It used to work when people weren't used to it and times were not so abysmal as they are now. But it's been overused so much that people are just starting to yawn and turn the page, they've seen it too many times to get worked up like they used to.

Sucks to be a Republican hack these days. Nobody's paying attention anymore.

Scherer has pushed every spin point from the McCain camp in the past two months with such credulity that it's impossible to take him seriously.

This is Lipstick On a Pig: The Sequel, and it'll have as much impact. These are consequential times. Voters aren't the idiots the press assumes; they'll stick to the main issues.

as I said on JMart's site:
The imagery doesn't even match. If you think about very old people who shouldn't actually drive anymore, you think about them driving very slowly and meandering all over the road (think of the scene in Ferris Bueller when Ferris's dad has to pass an old lady). The image Gibbs conjures is much faster -- definitely more like a reckless teen driver. If a stereotypical old-person-bad-driver were behind the wheel, you'd have plenty of time to dodge them.

Posted by: Chuck on September 30, 2008 at 12:45 PM | PERMALINK
his comments were intended to remind voters of "images of elderly drivers who have plowed into pedestrians in recent years."
I think that's an extremely partisan reading - it's more likely it was just a dig at Bob Novak. Posted by: kenga on September 30, 2008 at 12:46 PM | PERMALINK

I'll be careful with my observation about how the most erratic and scofflaw drivers I see (I drive for a living) always seem to be the older drivers who opted for the "In God We Trust" license plates here in Indiana - even though I'm "older" myself.

(These are offered as a free of charge option to those renewing their plates here. I got a blank look the last two times I asked if there were "Support the Constitutional Separation of Church and State" plates).

Posted by: colonpowwow on September 30, 2008 at 12:46 PM | PERMALINK

erratic = zig-zag = "get off the sidewalk"

I'm not sure how much clearer you can make it. Everything else I'd just stupid spin.

McNutty's campaign and surrogates are going to grasp at any illusion of a vine as they swirl down the toilet.

Posted by: simp on September 30, 2008 at 12:47 PM | PERMALINK

The comment was a dig at his age, I think.

Personally, I think McCain IS too old for the responsibility.

Posted by: Quinn on September 30, 2008 at 12:48 PM | PERMALINK

Not to change the subject too much, but McCain's new makeup artist is much better than his old one. He looks so life-like, almost blissful, serene. As for the car analogy being an age swipe, I don't get it.

Posted by: Danp on September 30, 2008 at 12:49 PM | PERMALINK

How sensitive McCain has become, how tender his sensibilities. So if some world leader says, a la Khruschev, "We will bury you!" McCain would just wither.

"And what was President McCain's reaction to that 3AM phone call?"

"Well, he fainted. No, he didn't faint, he kind of swooned. But, the Democrats had been saying mean things about him all day so he was feeling fragile already."

Posted by: Dennis - SGMM on September 30, 2008 at 12:49 PM | PERMALINK

Also, so what. The guy is 72. I don't advise attacking him on that ground, but if he's acting like a crazy old man, he may be one. How can it be wrong to say that?

Posted by: sniflheim on September 30, 2008 at 12:49 PM | PERMALINK

Shorter McCain campaign: any negative comment of any kind about McCain is a slur on all senior citizens.

On the other hand, I'm pretty sure the 'divorced from reality' line of attack is a not-very-subtle reminder to evangelicals about McCain's marital history.

If John McCain would be good at the children's game, "Hide and Seek."

He hides behind his POW status.

He hides behind his age.

He hides behind the skirts of a lipsticked, Moosylvanian, hoser-wanna-be who poses as a hockey mom---except she's too "dumber-than-dirt" to be a hockey mom.

He even hides from what he said right before hiding.

It's like America is being forced to play a giant game of "Where's McWaldo" or "Where in the World is McCarmen Whoever."

Posted by: Steve on September 30, 2008 at 12:50 PM | PERMALINK

The McCain camp is correct. A less insulting analogy for McCain's behavior would be:

like a drunken sailor lurching down a hallway, bouncing back and forth between the walls.

Oh, wait . . . .

If every time Hillary gets angry it's suggested she's having PMS, then that's prejudice. But if Hillary were showing many signs of a transformation in her usual character, with evidence of mood swings, depression, etc., then it would not be unreasonable to wonder if she was having a difficult time with menopause because such medical problems could affect how she'd run the country. From what I've heard, McCain in the last 6 months or so has often shown signs of confusion, which he had not earlier had a problem with. This suggests a medical problem associated with age --- for instance, the occurrence of mini strokes. It is reasonable for us to say he should produce his medical records.

Posted by: catherineD on September 30, 2008 at 12:51 PM | PERMALINK

We don't expect McCain to be singing, "I'm 72 and I don't know what I want!" But it is fair to ask what exactly it is that he wants and sometimes it is pretty damned difficult to get a measure on him from all his meanderings. So, fair analysis in my book. And to hell with the ageism bullshit.

Well, if the GOP torpedoed the bailout because Pelosi hurt their feelings, I can see how McCain would be crippled by Gibbs' comment. The Republicans are a very sensitive party, so back off.

I think people are beginning to finally see this for what it is...McCain trying to talk about anything except the issues. This will remind folks of the lipstick on a pig nonsense, they'll roll their eyes, and McCain will fall in the polls again for having brought this up.

In the minds of many voters, McCain has taken on the persona of the unserious candidate.

Reckless driving encompasses any and all ages--what a lame come-back...

"You want the truth? You can't handle the truth!" is more like it.

I wouldn't even call it a dig--this comment was/is a legitimate and growing concern--McCain's insane behavior was in full warp speed this past week. He was as a drunk with every comment, every decision--just pick one of the dozen doozies...

Every substantive question or critique is now met with an insane spin or accusation: same with the "Gotcha" thing.

I am also noticing stupid comment that blame the interviews with Palin--that we need to see more of the 'real' Palin, like we did during the acceptance speech..not with gotcha moments in interviews--Huh?

I think we've seen plenty of the real Palin, and it's frightening!

The acceptance speech was a script read (with great acting performance for Palin) from a teleprompter, and the interviews she's engaged have all called for quite real life scenario thoughtful responses from the "gal" herself.

Fair and reasonable questions and critiques for anyone seeking to be V.P. or President.

"You want the truth? You can't handle the truth!"

Look, if he's driving a car, get off the sidewalk."

That was the single most hateful and contemptible statement that has been made in this political season. That was utterly without dignity and it is an insult to those of us who are elderly and who drive. Now, I'm not going to pretend that I haven't had "issues" behind the wheel. I have run people over, as a matter of fact and by way of full disclosure. I have not killed anyone, however, and they don't press charges against you if the pedestrians are inebriated, as was the case when I ran down three university students several years ago.

The elderly are our best drivers, by far. We are a calming effect when it comes to the nation's roadways. Think of Senator John McCain as the elderly man who keeps with the speed limit in the proper lane, both hands on the wheel, sunglasses on, floppy hat pulled down to prevent skin cancer. Senator Obama is the driver in one of his zip cars, going ninety in a forty-five, elbow in the wind, top down, money flying everywhere.

That such a statement would be the fodder for a post here is what concerns me the most, however. Once Kevin Dumbo pulled up stakes, I figured a conservative like Jonah Goldberg or Ben Domanech would take over here at the Washington Monthly. I figured, well, this Steve Benen is on temporary duty again, and his evil girlfriend Hillbilly is just here to wring her hands and class up the joint. I was mistaken. What a pant load.

Age IS AN ISSUE. Jeez Leweez! I say pound the guy - the more the "WorseThanBush" Campaign kicks and screams about age-ism, the more voters will have to think about age; inevitably, voters will start connecting "eratic confusion" with too old to be president. And whenever Sarah the Unready puts her 1.5 cents in...well, when you saw TraitorJoe whispering sweet SunniShia nothings in McCains ear - what did you think?

Age swipe? What age swipe? He was merely talking about McCain's erratic leadership. What makes them think that it's about his age?

That's essentially Gibb's defense. Nothing explicit is said about age. The inference of McCain's age being a factor in endangering pedestrians is being made entirely by hypersensitive Republicans and McCain supporters. I don't think it's a winning meta-argument to respond to an argument about McCain's erratic behavior by bringing up ageism. Republicans should not want those two ideas in the same room; senile dementia and diminished capacity do not reassure people about the wisdom of putting McCain in charge of the country.

After seeing the "interviews" with Couric and Palin, it appears confusion is not only for the aged, unless 44 is considered over the hill...oh, wait, how old is Obama? He is older than Palin and he isn't showing the same symptoms as she is. Perhaps she is the one suffering "mid-life change". I know, she just had a baby, we are told, but it may have been her last egg. Do you think? I like that I can just ramble and it is OK. It has been very well personified in the speech of Palin, to the extend that Tina Fey just has to repeat her words and she gets laughs. What will the writers do for job security? They will be out of work, unless they can avoid accusations of 'plaigerism' for copying speeches from McCain and Palin. Now, there is a lawsuit I'd love to see: charging the SNL writers with stealing the lines of the candidates and profiting from them.

Could the buffoonery get any worse? At least when Dumbo was running the show, you knew where you stood. Now? It's like watching the clowns pile up in the phone booth and the phone booth doesn't have that trap door on the bottom that allows the clowns to disappear under the stage and then re-emerge moments later for the continuation of the sight gag in another part of the arena.

Yeah, the Norman Rogers post has to be parody. Pretty good, too.

But seriously, seniors offended by this remark already are voting McCain, and I don't see any logic penetrating their delusional fog.

Seniors voting for Obama know that age is a serious consideration for what has to be the most grinding 4 years anyone has to endure (for those who actually try to perform the job responsibly, that is).

The fact is, McCain has been wildly reckless and erratic the past 6 months. Whether that's due to age is a point worthy of consideration.

Posted by: bdop4 on September 30, 2008 at 1:19 PM | PERMALINK

Norman,
Your fake outrage and crocodile tears are touching, academy award worthy really, but as I pointed out to others this morning, even old people like to make fun of other old people, seniors are just like that. Look, when a 75 year old guy tries to seduce a 30 year old it is funny and come to think of it a 72 year old runing for President of the United States is kinda hilarious too. As Joe Lieberman once advise why don't you just lay back and enjoy it all for awhile.

Are you bringing up my DUI convictions? Are you going to throw those in my face? Fine. Yes, I have had several DUIs. All of them during the 1960s, 70s, and 80s. There! Satisfied?

It doesn't change the fact that I detected ageism in that statement. I am a victim of it on occasion. The most common violation of my civil rights occurs when people speak too loudly to me when I am purchasing things. They speak in a loud, clear voice when, in fact, my hearing is in very good shape. Do I go around hiring lawyers and filing complaints with the Supreme Court?

Machines fail us every single day. And, as we all know, when old people drive through crowded areas and inadvertently run people over, it is because of a mechanical malfunction, not their limited driving ability. Time and time again, accelerators have failed in this country, no matter who was behind the wheel, and the first refuge of an incompetent jonny-law type is to blame the old man behind the wheel. Or, worse, the crazy old lady! Did any of you consider the sexism angle of that statement?

McCain is accorded deference in more than one aspect of his persona. The "POW" schtick perturbs me, with commentors having to be careful they don't insult a "hero and patriot" in the course of any criticism. Imagine your dentist is a war vet and he thoroughly botches a procedure on you. Maybe your auto mechanic renders your car a smoldering heap of plastic and steel during some idiotic repair. Were you to regale a group of friends with your sad stories and point out patronizing either was ill advised would it be appropriate for someone to pipe up and protest "Hey, that's a former POW and war hero you're slamming, buddy. Lay off the man, I think you're questioning his service to our nation!"? No, no one would inject such BS into the conversation. Yet McCain can make a hash of something and we're supposed to tread lightly lest we insult a war hero. Same goes for his age. Damned few professions claim their practitioners are immune to the mental and physical ravages of age. McCain and his supporters think he is. That renders both his and their judgment suspect.

Posted by: steve duncan on September 30, 2008 at 1:27 PM | PERMALINK

I think the McCain team should remind everyone that the average age od the McCain team is a very spry (and wise) 58 yrs old. And since one of them is insane and the other one is crazy (I forget which is which) they actually cancel out and make for a perfectly sensible team.

And BTW, Sarah "I'll get back to ya" Palin said recently:

"I'm looking forward to meeting him. I've never met him," she said at a rally here. "I've been hearing about his Senate speeches since I was in, like, the second grade."

If that's not a dig at Biden's age, then what is it?

Wow, I'm so glad this was picked up here. Michael Scherer somehow complained about McCain losing the key to his house.

First of all, I occasionally misplace my keys, but I have done it so often that I keep them in a special place. This is the typical example of something everyone loses track of.

But the point with McCain is that he has 10 house keys. It might have been funnier to claim that McCain could lose track of a whole house, like he did, and not just the key to the house.

As far as bad driving, this is always characterized as driving off the road, maybe onto the sidewalk. Speeding isn't considered bad driving, crashing is a result of bad driving. Zig-zagging implies a continuing problem and transmits not only a lack of ability, but an inability to realize this lack of ability.

Age has nothing to do with it.

What about Palin's comments yesterday that she was a little girls when Biden made his first speech on the Hill? She had a nice chuckel at his expense.

Perhaps she also did not know that his speech was just shortly after his wife and infant daughter died.

The hate is so thick around here, it's a wonder one does not have to hold their nose in order to read this drivel.

Then leave.

An Obama spokesperson makes a sexist, ageist, hateful statement and liberals bray like the unrepentant jackasses that they are in approval.

Actually, an Obama spokesperson made no such comment. He made a comment about McCain's erratic campaign, not his age.

The fact you and so many others have their panties in a twist over it proves none of you have anything of substance to offer America, and prefer to harp on useless, pointless bullshit.

In other words, for you all, it's Tuesday.

When they start holding the public executions, all of you sensitive types will have a field day, won't you?

Actually, most of us liberals are against capital punishment. But your friends on the right find it hysterical to joke about public executions, especially for those who they disagree with politically.

And they do it on the airwaves..

But that's okay -- you wouldn't be a wingnut if you didn't blame others for stuff your side actually does.

Scherer was catching so much crap about his post at Time's blog (which used the phrasing "Hardy Har Har" twice) that he was forced to write an "balancing" post about the McCain/Palin/Couric interview, and now he's also got Wonkette Emeritus laughing at him over there.

Gibbs should just say "Oh absolutely not, I was thinking of a *drunk* driver."

FWIW, my mother (age 75) and father (age 78) think McCain is too old to be President. I don't think some jokes (intended or unintended) about his advanced age would change their minds about that.

Posted by: Fembot on September 30, 2008 at 2:32 PM | PERMALINK

John McCain is an OLD FUCK, but so are a lot of congressmen - we need new blood!

John McCain is old, he struggles to remember his talking points at times.

John McCain recklessness has nothing to do with his age, I presume. He was just as reckless 8 years ago in his first bid at 74. Many of the relationships he's build over time have proven reckless, he was younger still then.

He is old. He is old. He can't pretend he isn't! Why are some pretending this isn't a legitimate line of attack? It may offend some, but hey, you can't win them all.

Posted by: TBone on September 30, 2008 at 2:35 PM | PERMALINK

I'm 72 myself right now and I sure wouldn't want any one my age or older being president. Especially a maniac like mcsame.

Posted by: josephus on September 30, 2008 at 2:47 PM | PERMALINK

A few others have brought it up, but really, it bears repeating. Yesterday, at a rally, Sarah Palin made fun of Biden's age, saying something along the lines of that she's looking forward to meeting him, since she's been reading his speeches since she was in the second grade.

But remember, it's not shrill when Republicans do it, but it IS shrill to insinuate that it's shrill when Republicans do it. And it's sexist to imply that a woman is shrill, but only if it's a Republican woman.

When you're always allowed to make up the rules as you go along, you get used to winning.

Wow, Obama's leads in the polls this close to election day sure has driven Norman off the deep end.

No, I'll tell you what has driven me off the deep end--the hatred of the modern American liberal. I see it every day, and it shocks me. I see so many desperate, unhappy liberals making ridiculous arguments that have no bearing on reality. Liberals use the DailyKos and other sites to foment armed insurrection and chaos in our cities. The Washington Monthly is now used to bray at the world from the catbird seat of ignorance. Stay smug, liberals! Stay smug.

Obama wants to raise taxes and spend hundreds of billions of dollars to make America worse off and there's no outcry. Anyone who points out that Obama wants to invade Pakistan and start a war with a nation that has nuclear weapons is met with screams of outrage. An Obama spokesman can go on the airwaves, which are free, and call John McCain an old, battered, crippled drunk who wants to drive like a maniac over schoolchildren and their assorted friends or parents and liberals hoot with glee.

I'm losing my satellite connection, so let me add this--the hate you spread is equal to the hate you will reap when all of this is over. There! I used the Beatles against you! Stop hating people. Start loving people.

What Palin said on the stump about debating Biden:"I'm looking forward to meeting him. I've never met him. I've been hearing about his Senate speeches since I was in, like, the second grade."

I saw this clip and was like "hey, what the hell? How is that a good strategy?" First, her running mate is 7 years older than Biden and has been in Washington just as long. Second, imagine the backlash if Obama had said something along these lines about McCain?!? I think McCain would have needed to go to the hospital because his hurt feelings would have needed actual bandages.

If the McCain Noise Machine gears up over Gibbs' comment the Obama campaign needs to simply laugh at them and remind everyone about Palin's knock on Biden's age/experience.

How is that a good strategy?" First, her running mate is 7 years older than Biden and has been in Washington just as long.

Incorrect.

In 1972, John McCain was using his spine to hold his shattered body together as North Vietnamese communist agents repeatedly beat him because he wouldn't tell them the secrets of US Navy aviation.

In 1972, Joe Biden was knocking them dead in the Senate with his blowhard speeches.

My friend Pete DuPont has known Biden longer than most of you have been alive, and while Pete likes Biden, I do not share those sentiments. Pete tried to smooth things over with myself and Biden, but there is no "smoothing over" things with a man who is your mortal enemy, politically and spiritually, as Biden is mine. In fact, I have scuffled numerous times with Senator Biden. In 1977, Senator Biden pushed me into a tray of drinks at a party in Georgetown. In 1988, in Iowa, I had a full confrontation with him at a hotel restaurant in Des Moines where he threw a salad bowl at me after I hurled a newspaper at him.

You never take your eyes off Joe Biden. Ever. He will strike like a cobra. He will attack from all sides. He is a dangerous and wily opponent. I fear that Governor Palin, who I do believe is the worst choice ever for the Republican Party, will be crying and left uncontrollably sobbing by the time Biden finishes with her on Thursday night. After all, it's what the liberal base wants, isn't it? He'll probably make fun of her looks and call her a cow. Or he'll call her fundamentally ignorant and a waste of oxygen. Someting like that.

They have to face the facts, if John McCain can't place blame for his backs and forths, then you can only say he's lying.

Is John McCain the worst lying candidate for President we've ever had?

We can't trust John McCain, whether it's age or outright lying.

"And BTW, Sarah "I'll get back to ya" Palin said recently:

"I'm looking forward to meeting him. I've never met him," she said at a rally here. "I've been hearing about his Senate speeches since I was in, like, the second grade."

If that's not a dig at Biden's age, then what is it?"

Nah, I think she must have been talking about John McCain.

If he's old and confused about what he's said in the past or if he's just a liar, then we can't trust him.

If he goes to Washington to fix the problem and then leads House Republicans to walk away and blow it up without providing an alternative that can pass through Congress, then he isn't much of a leader.

John McCain can't keep his story straight, can't lead and apparently can't find Sarah Palin.

sister,
Norman isn't on another plantet. He is right here on Earth. You see, Norman is blogging from his boat, the Heffenpuffer or some such name. Didn't you know he has taken off for the Carribean to help the Coastguard patrol for submarines devoted to drug smuggling? He is doing his civic duty for the country. He has no choice. The latest economic turmoil has left him with a paltry $2M, not enough for him to live off comfortably.
You should feel sorry for Norman. I do.
