WOULD MCCAIN 'SUSPEND' AGAIN?.... John McCain appeared on "Fox & Friends" this morning, where he appeared open to the idea of "suspending" his presidential campaign (it's tempting to say "again," but we know McCain never actually suspended anything).

Steve Doocy got the ball rolling with some odd commentary, crediting McCain personally for focusing Americans' attention on the Wall Street crisis, and improving the bill for Republicans. He seemed to urge McCain to stop campaigning, so he can "emerge the leader."

"I'll do whatever I can do to make this thing work," McCain responded, adding, "I will put my presidential campaign on the back burner if necessary and do anything."

When confronted with the fact that the crisis has worsened since McCain's initial so-called "suspension," McCain responded, "I'll do whatever is necessary and whatever my Republican colleagues in the administration and others ask me to do to help." He then bashed Barack Obama for a while on issues unrelated to the Wall Street crisis.

McCain also mentioned at least twice that Congress isn't doing anything today because of a religious holiday. This, of course, led me to wonder why McCain wouldn't want to take advantage of this break to help work towards an agreement.

To be sure, I realize there's no genuine reason for McCain to suspend his campaign. If he did, it wouldn't make any substantive difference. That McCain would even entertain the idea of putting his campaign "on the back burner" only helps reinforce the notion that he's pretty far gone.

For that matter, last week's gimmick did nothing to help his campaign, and most voters saw through the transparency of McCain's craven tactics.

That said, it is kind of interesting to see McCain struggle with a basic question: if it was necessary to "suspend" last week, why is it unnecessary this week? The longer it takes for McCain to come up with a compelling answer to that question, the worse his judgment appears.

Maybe he wants to suspend Palin before Thursday?

Posted by: wren on September 30, 2008 at 2:27 PM | PERMALINK

Maybe he'll just flat out quit. That would help a lot of people out and pave the way for Palin to achieve her real goal w/o having to eliminate McAce once they were dully elected...what fun!

"I will put my presidential campaign on the back burner if necessary and do anything."

In other words, "Somebody stop me!"

The only honest analysis of this needs to bear a simple headline: "Bullshit Catches Up With McCain."

"Steve Doocy got the ball rolling with some odd commentary"

Mr. Benen - you are being redundant and repetitive to use the adjective 'odd' in front of commentary for Doocy!

My God! They're on break for a Jewish holiday (Rosh Hashana)! Who's his bestest bud in the Senate? Joe Lieberman! What better opportunity to get together and celebrate a nice New Year with the guy he went out to a fancy restaurant with last week and hammer out a plan?!?!

"I'll do whatever is necessary and whatever my Republican colleagues in the administration and others ask me to do to help."

Well, John, how about you take a long vacation in Outer Mongolia from now until, say, Nov. 4? That would be very helpful indeed.

Doocey: McCain is Jewish? This is hu-u-u-g-e!

The Honorable Senator John McCain seems a bit lost in all this economic disorder. He has not shorn up any of the anxieties we common Americans are feeling, nor has he offered a comprehensive economic vision that would help us out of this de-regulated nightmare we find ourselves in.

Oh, I forgot, Sen. McCain has made his entire senatorial career on being a de-regulator! What a fine mess he and his economic philosophy has gotten us into! -Kevo

I suppose I could muster some sympathy for him if he "suspended" his campaign altogether. His part is in shambles. He is irrelevant, and the "economic philosophy" he has bought into for decades has been exposed as a myth set up to provide cover for criminal greed.

Man, wouldn't that be hysterical. Here everyone is wondering whether Palin's going to be dumped from the ticket or not. But the Mavericky thing to do would be for McCain to dump himself from the ticket and let Palin run as President! She could tap Mitt Romney as her Veep and take it in a landslide!

The dementia is fast overtaking McCain. It's the only explanation that makes sense.

Posted by: Darsan54 on September 30, 2008 at 2:47 PM | PERMALINK

For five and a half years I didn't have anything to suspend. I'm just catching up.

I'm waiting for the librul media to mock McCain for this 1/10th what they mocked Gore for championing the internet.

I thought McCain knew how to fix the economy, but was going to wait until he was sworn in to do so. Same with winning the war in Iraq.

Now we find out he doesn't even know how to stop campaigning?

I swear, he's wandering around like my dad did in the early stages of Alzheimer's. He's repeating himself, acting out of character, saying the same thing over and over, making big proclamations that don't add up.

If he were to get into the White House, how often would the Secret Service have to go retrieve him in a bath robe, wading in the Reflecting Pool? How long before he doesn't recognize the American flag?

Or has this been his problem all along?

Maybe it is all an elaborate ploy for the sympathy vote. I mean really, look at Palin on CBS - could anyone of average intelligence with experience in broadcasting really be that bad?

I think she should wet herself during the debate, then point out that is what happens when you have babies instead of killing them...

The knuckle dragging crowd would overjoyed, and lots of normal people might start to wonder if opposing her political ambitions is akin to mocking the mentally handicapped kid at school.

The performance art guy could revamp his 'Leave Britney ALONE!' schtick.

McCain, of course, wakes up all that guilt we feel for being creeped out sitting next to great grampa at family dinners because he keeps for getting his teeth and smells funny...

For anyone interested, I just wrote about a wingnut who actually suggested that McCain send in Palin to save the day, just so she can claim to have some sort of credibility:
Send in the Clown

These people cannot be parodied.

In a perfect world, McShameless AND Sarah, Queen of Syntax, would both step down and allow Levi and Bristol to fill the ticket. Lets face it, if elected, could Levi and Bristol possibly screw up the country any worse than neo-john and palin?

"I'll do whatever is necessary and whatever my Republican colleagues in the administration and others ask me to do to help."

I thought he was a Maverick, a leader, the man to get us through this mess, a man who does not sit back and wait for his colleges to tell him what to do.

And by "Republican colleagues in the administration" does he mean the ones in the Executive branch or the legislative branch ?

One in the House (Cantor of Virginia), two in the Senate (Coleman and Specter):

Actually, rea, that's three in the Senate.

Joe Lieberman. Bwaaahahaha!

John McCain, for the love of God, please suspend your campaign, stop Sarah Palin from speaking and let somebody else solve our problems.

Posted by: MarkH on September 30, 2008 at 5:54 PM | PERMALINK

Just drop out McShame! Save yourself and Palins family all the misery that she is putting her kids through! It's the most patriotic thing you can do!

McCain continues to call this a 'fiscal crisis.' No wonder he thinks we can resolve this through focusing on spending cuts.

John, this is a financial crisis (a credit crisis, a solvency crisis, a liquidity crisis, ...), this is not yet a fiscal crisis. That's what will happen when all of this comes due and crunches the federal budget.
