I Take It All Back
I know I've been pretty hard on Sarah Palin. I've said that I think she's unprepared for the Presidency; I've made fun of the idea that she learns about other nations through osmosis; I've even questioned her energy expertise. I take it all back. I eat my words. I was wrong:
"Couric: And when it comes to establishing your worldview, I was curious, what newspapers and magazines did you regularly read before you were tapped for this to stay informed and to understand the world?
Palin: I've read most of them, again with a great appreciation for the press, for the media.
Couric: What, specifically?
Palin: Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me all these years.
Couric: Can you name a few?
Palin: I have a vast variety of sources where we get our news, too. Alaska isn't a foreign country, where it's kind of suggested, "Wow, how could you keep in touch with what the rest of Washington, D.C., may be thinking when you live up there in Alaska?" Believe me, Alaska is like a microcosm of America."
And that's just the US. Imagine: there are forty one newspapers in Bangladesh, and twenty five in Nigeria; Mongolia only has eight, but they're in Mongolian. I started counting the newspapers listed for Italy, but my fingers got tired.
I did wonder whether these lists are complete. I don't know, but Sarah Palin does! She can just check them against the newspapers she reads "regularly", and see.
Think of the number of languages Sarah Palin must know! I look at this page, for instance, or this one, and while I think they're quite lovely, I can't understand them at all. I certainly couldn't read them. I am immensely impressed that Sarah Plain can.
I guess all that stuff about Putin rearing his ugly head and entering Alaskan airspace must have been part of the McCain campaign's clever expectations management game. I, for one, will never underestimate Sarah Palin again.
Although this one sentence from her interview does tempt me:
"I'm not going to solely blame all of man's activities on changes in climate."
Perhaps Governess Palin isn't qualified to be Vice President if she is spending so much time slavishly reading the liberal MSM.

Sarah Palin is the Daily Show's Emergency Rescue and Recovery Plan, to help it get through Bush's departure.
A plan I can wholeheartedly oppose.

Nice work Hilzoy. Unbelievable...to the point of being pathetic. What a snow job...can't admit to any weakness...I've never seen anything like it in politics. And then this...
"I'm not going to solely blame all of man's activities on changes in climate."
Compares to the dumbest thing any beauty pageant contestant has ever uttered. McCain's judgment and his inability to admit to mistakes will ruin this nation. He and his cohort in audacity (Lindsay Graham) have been exposed as not fit for government...at any level. Couric must be shaking her head non stop in disbelief that these idiots are actually trying to pass Palin off as qualiafied to be president. Just pathetic.

If the VP's job is to answer pop-quizzes from nosy journalists practicing gotcha journalism, all this snark would be justified.
Hey how much does she have to know to attend the funerals of dead leaders? Anyone can say, 'Sorry Mr. Thatcher, the Carbon Fiber Lady will be sorely missed'.

Are we being punked? It is hard to believe that she is actually this incapable of answering a simple "getting to know you" type question. The only logical explanation for her non-answer is that she DOESN'T READ. She probably gets all of her national news from the cable news channels and hasn't read a publication outside of the ones provided at her doctor's waiting room for years.
Maybe we can forgive her not being able to explain the bailout. Maybe we can forgive her not knowing what the Bush Doctrine is. Maybe we can understand not having her running mate's positions memorized. But this? This is ridiculous.
Maybe we are getting punked. Maybe the McCain campaign is setting the bar so low that everyone will be surprised and delighted if she isn't a blithering idiot Thursday night.
It is highly possible that she will do fine. Here is the 2006 Alaska gubernatorial debate. From the little I managed to sit through, I think she did fine. Her answers weren't in depth at all; her points were what the people wanted to hear, even if they didn't align with the law or common sense or reality. But she didn't blither, and she came off as confident and competent. That may be all she needs to do Thursday.

To avoid an interview meltdown, let's see if Palin directly rips into Biden on Thursday. I think Palin comes on all teeth like at the Republican convention and goes after Biden and Obama in every possible way. She even says something like: "Obama wants the US to kiss up to Islamofascists. He'd surrender our homes and children to Iran's mullah two weeks after assuming office. We must stop Obama and Biden to save our country and our children from a total sell out to the terrorists by traitors like these two Democrats." She'll just throw the whole bucket of slime at Biden and see if it knocks him completely off balance because any Biden counterattack would be "sexist." It's her only chance to stay in the debate and to turn her sinking image around. She can't try to prove she really does understands the issues. She can only carpet bomb to the maximum as a complete distraction. And, because McCain really despises Obama, I bet the Drama Queen will approve of this tactic. And what would the media report the next day? Certainly, not anything substantive that Biden said. It would all be Palin drama.

Oh. What was that? You want me to believe that someone who's an end-times Pentecostal with a penchant for embracing a secessionist political-fringe organization while promoting the shotgun-wedding of her under-aged daughter to a knuckle-dragging varmint as America's answer to the wedding of Charles and Di while simultaneously demonstrating a blatantly-dishonest disregard for the media, the taxpayers, justice, truth, and every last meaningful thing on the planet is qualified to hold any position of measurable governing responsibility?
Fortunately, Sarah Palin is like a small child's Halloween costume. The neighborhood gives the customary "Ooohs" and Ahhhs" as the child collects his-or-her annual sack of goodies, you take a few pictures for keepsakes of the moment, you quietly tuck the tot into bed and put the costume into a box or onto a hanger, relegating it to the closet while secretly acknowledging that the child has already begun the process of outgrowing that costume---just as America has already begun the process of outgrowing the frightful-yet-fanciful fantasy that is Sarah Palin, John McCain, the GOP, and the insanity of Bushylvanianism....

Linda,
Were you a regular reader of Washington Monthly you'd know that Democrats suffer their lumps here too. That's how progressives are. We actually hold everyone, including our own, to the same standards.
Once in a while, though, the Republicans send something or someone down the pike that is so blatantly absurd that we have to pounce on it.
So Joe Biden, like every politician, has made some mistakes. So far, you've mentioned one. And, when you consider the more than 100 interviews he's given since his VP nomination, one ain't bad. And get this, Linda. He's admitted his mistake! Came right out and said, basically, "I misspoke."
But, neither Palin nor McCain seem to ever admit to any failings whatsoever. In fact, when faced with evidence of having said something incorrect or contradictory to their professed world view, they twist and spin and then blame the press for being biased. Biased against what? Being obstinate?
For the last eight years this country has suffered under the rule of an administration that not only never admits to a mistake, but has calculatedly [and treasonously] removed itself and its actions from public and government scrutiny. The result? A war, an economic crisis, a failed global image, a crisis in education, phenomenal debt, a sick environment, and a single industry -- oil -- running roughshod over the Constitution.
And this is all because 50% of the US population gleefully refused to ask George Bush and Dick Cheney any tough questions or scrutinize their answers or actions in any meaningful way. We've had blind leaders for eight years, Linda. And you sit there, with a sharp stick in each hand, repeatedly blinding yourself.
When the good, thoughtful people of this site see Sarah Palin and John McCain make a blatant mockery of the election by providing nonsensical answers to simple questions, and then spouting more nonsense when the interviewer is gracious enough to give them an opportunity to clarify their bullshit, we cannot help but to cry foul. And if you can honestly watch the gibberish that Palin shrieks and not admit that she is in no way capable of assuming the chair of a Junior League, much less the vice presidency of the United States, then you have neither the integrity, the intellect, nor the sanity to pull a lever on election day. Do us all a favor. Stay home and watch it on TV.

I think its too late for her to "win" the debate. Even a better than expected showing won't accomplish that for her. We know the McCain campaign has demanded conditions such as no direct communication between the candidates. I wonder if there has been any restrictions on follow-ups as well? Even if she is polished, her big problem is that she really has no knowledge or understanding of the issues. A crash course will only supply her with talking points, and more than repeating given lines will be required of her.
In the end, people will come away with an impression of which candidate will an asset to their adminstration with a cllear understanding of the issues and challenges they will be facing...and which candidate could step in and take over should the need arise. Sarah Palin can't pass that test no matter how coached she is for a static 90 minutes. We've seen what she has to offer, and it aint much. Without the knowledge and understanding the most she can hope for is to not make a total ass of herself. But I think its virtually impossible to convince voters that she is qualified to be the Vice President, much less, President.
I shouldn't have, but I looked at my 401k yeaterday. I know I shouldn't have. I was horrified. We recieved a pretty dismal email from the company president and the CEO yesterday. People are really nervous. I don't think "Hey she's just like me!" or "I'd like to have a beer with her" will carry much weight this time. People are too concerned about their own well-bieng to indulge that foolishness. This election is vital, and I think people are taking a serious, hard look at the candidates. Increasingly, Sarah Palin seems like an insult. I don't see her changing that with even a better than expected showing.

Linda,
She may be nice, but when I go to a surgeon, I don't care if she is nice, I want her to be competent. Sarah Palin could not answer a simple question. I don't know why, but I am sure she could explain it, I think that she was given the chance to explain it, but I think she has not been honest enough to admit to her difficulty.

Indulge with me my latest lyrical creation:
(Sung to the tune of “Davey Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier”)
Lined fifty moose up against the wall
Made a bet she could shoot them all
Shot forty-nine most sincerely dead
'Til Putin raised up his ugly head.
Sarah, Sarah Palin
Queen of the Last Frontier
Vladimir shouted “No, No, No!.”
"That's a Russian citizen moose you know
"It swam to Alaska just this morn
"If you'd watched from your house, you'd have been forewarned."
Sarah, Sarah Palin
Queen of the Last Frontier
“Sorry, Charlie,” Sarah said,
Then she shot the last moose really dead
“This “gotcha" stuff has gotta stop.”
“That's right,” agreed her mom and pop.
Sarah, Sarah Palin
Queen of the Last Frontier
She's focused everyday on Washington
To bail out the economy, just like John
She answered Katie's questions but Couric looked stunned
Like she'd never heard someone talkin' in tongues.
Sarah, Sarah Palin
Seein' her duty clear
Now come this Thursday, Sarah and Joe
Will talk on Tee Vee doncha know?
If Gwen asks a "gotcha" that requires a fact
Sarah will “find one and get right back . . .
“Ta' ya,” Sarah Palin
Queen of the Last Frontier

People don't like Palin because she's "nice," and so they make fun of her
Nice isn't the word that comes to mind when I think about how she hires unqualified cronies and pushes out people who don't kowtow to her. Nice is not the word that comes to mind when her speeches are filled with invective toward those who disagree with her, or when she lies, or when she surprises her pregnant daughter with a VP run at the last second. But then judging from Linda Bailey's comment, I don't think we agree on the meaning of "nice".

Never travel on -- or consume anything delivered on -- interstate highways? (Which means, of course, Linda Bailey must not shop at Wal-Mart, whose low prices are in part subsidized by the Federal interstate system.)
Linda also must not have a bank account, of course, because her deposits there would be inusred by the -- yes! -- Federal government. And she must not own stocks, since the market could not function without the oversight of the Securities and Exchange Commission. She must not have a college education, since those are subsidized, to one degree or another, by the Federal government as well.
Of course, she's never voted, because only the Federal government guarnatees that she can do that no matter what state she lives in.
An intellectually honest member of the Cult of Rugged Individualism -- pardon me while I laugh -- would undertake the thought experiment and ask themselves if they could enjoy the success they claim as all their own if they had started in, say, Somalia, Afghanistan or Malaysia.
No? Then hell yes, you depend on the government, and for its most basic functions -- forming a union, establishing justice, ensuring domenstic tranquility, providing for the common defense, promoting the general welfare, and ensuring the blessings of liberty. Functions that function so well, depsite everything, that we Americans tend to take them for granted -- to such a degree that the depraved Cult of Rugged Individualism flourishes.
Shame on you, Linda.

Sure, she reads all newspapers, but is she aware of all Internet traditions?

To Linda Bailey's remark about where Sarah Palin is and where the people on this blog are. I don't know about anyone else, but I am exactly where I want to be in my life. So thanks for offering the insult, but I'll decline to take it.
If someone asked me how I stay informed, I could tell them which newspapers and magazines, and blog sites, and radio and tv news programs, I access regularly. I could also tell them which ones I access occassionally.
If someone asked me my opinion on the financial rescue legislation, I could tell them with some level of understanding. Same is true with any number of public policy areas. Why? Because I stay informed. For the record, I am a Protestant minister seving a local church, not someone working in jounalism, politics, government, or academia.
After the second segment of the Couric interviews, I was startled to realize that I could handle these questions more effectively, more responsively than the Republican nominee for VP. Since I don't think I'm prepared to be either President or VP, I sure don't plan to vote for a ticket that includes someone less prepared than I am.

She will come apart in the debate if she has to defend her comments. She knows the sound bites and all Biden to do is answer his questions very thoroughly and confidently. Then he has to thrown it back to her to defend her snarky comments and she will wither. She can not go into any depth at all and Biden must make her - this is not rude or sexist and we the public must demand that she does this. It will prove that she has no depth or intelligence for this position.

I think it's sad that people are so cynical that they'd accept a rube like Palin as potential commander in chief. But hell, Bush has determined to turn us into Argentina then we might as well get a Eva Peron to play beauty pageant.

Of course she reads all of them! How hard can it be? They're all lined up together at the supermarket checkout. Just because she kills her own food doesn't mean that she doesn't have time to shop for Nair and cigarettes and a six-pack or two. And, while she's waiting in line, she's got plenty of time to get through them all.

Gregory, don't forget the potential tax, educational, loan, and preference benefits Linda is eligible for with a woman-owned business.
Linda, Palin, the pitbull in lipstick, the community organizer-hater, ain't nice. These aren't hard questions that Katie is asking. These aren't slanted questions Katie is asking. These are simple questions anyone paying attention the past 5 years should be able to at least bluff their way through.
As an American who may one day have to put my life in her hands, I expect her to at least be competent. She plainly is not.

L.B. - let me tell you - you are delusional in thinking we are jealous of Palin. It is our duty as citizens to vote for the right people for elective offices. In my eyes there is no one more inexperienced and naive than Palin for one of the most important positions in the WORLD. While she may be fine for local and state and maybe Congressional office - at this time she is unprepared to have my confidence to be VP. This is not a sexist or anger response to her - it is a logical objective opionion. If you took a step back and realy assessed the knowledge you have of her you would think this as well - you are the one voting on pure emotion - not us who disagree with the choice and Repub ticket.

"Think of the number of languages Sarah Palin must know! I look at this page, for instance, or this one, and while I think they're quite lovely, I can't understand them at all. I certainly couldn't read them. I am immensely impressed that Sarah Plain can."
Yeah, and I bet you cen't speak in tongues, either.

Alaska is a microcosm of America? Really? You mean it's also been run by an idiot for far too long?

Gregory, don't forget the potential tax, educational, loan, and preference benefits Linda is eligible for with a woman-owned business.
Oh, but she wouldn't take those! She doesn't depend on the government -- even when it's clearly in her interest to do so. She's a Rugged Individualist™!
I forgot to mention she wouldn't take Social Security, either. I wonder if she agrees with McCain that the way it's funded is a disgrace?
But I agree that Linda's residence in a fantasy world is confirmed by her assertion that Palin is "nice." Attack dog politics have characterized her political career, and the red meat of her attacks at the GOP convention were what made Republicans swoon in the first place. Being "nice" is not part of Palin's brand.

Chrenson & Gregory, thanks. Your words are good braces for heading back out to work.

Linda,
I have to speak up here too as a woman and as a business owner-- I wouldn't hire Palin to run my business. I wouldn't trust her as a friend and I certainly wouldn't want her as my neighbor. She's certainly not "nice" and doesn't even pretend to be ("sarah barracuda") and she only appears "smart" when she's reading from a prepared speech that someone else wrote.
I'm certainly not jealous of her, I think it's pretty clear she's a flaming hypocrite who claims to care about ethics reform when she has quite a few ethics problems of her own. She hired one of Abramoff's lobbyists for pete's sake-- and now she hates lobbyists?
Linda, you say that you like Sarah Palin but how well do you really know her actual record?
Palin didn't rise to governor of Alaska because she's some brilliant reformer-- she did by way of being connected and her willingness to turn on those connections for her own political gain. She went from mayor of little Wasilla (whose budget she left with tens of millions in debt) to the cushy position of chair of the Alaska Commission on Oil & Gas by way of appointment by the governor-- who she then turned on and ran against. As governor she then appointed many of her friends to positions of government, regardless of whether or not they were qualified for the job. The head of her department of agriculture is a real estate agent-- that she went to high school with.
Palin and McCain are certainly cut from the same cloth-- they'll both say or do anything to get elected, it doesn't matter if it's not based on facts or reality. They'll both lie about their own records as well as their opponents without blinking. This is why they have to say they put "country first" in the hope that people won't realize that they actually put themselves and party first.
Sarah Palin is the GOP's biggest insult to women in politics or who care about politics.

It's probably from one of these named sources where she read about Biden when she was two years old.

Gregory, you forgot to remind Linda that the Govrnment has protected her from all the Muslim terrorists that would like to kill her, and even worse, destroy her business.

Nice to know I'm not the only one who was jarred by those statements. But I still wonder, which does Palin prefer--Amputee Love or Men in Diapirs?

"I'm not going to solely blame all of man's activities on changes in climate."
Wouldn't it be fun to try, though? Let's make this a legal defense! "I didn't mug him, I merely sidled up against him because I was chilly!"

LEAVE SARAH ALONE!...
...she only claimed to read 'most' of the newspapers & magazines, not ALL...
Posted by: Ohioan on October 1, 2008 at 12:55 PM | PERMALINK
I think there was a slight pause in Palin's response because she realized answering with People Magazine, US Weekly, Hunters Weekly and Snow Machine Monthly was not going to cut it.

Palin: I've read most of them, again with a great appreciation for the press, for the media.
Couric: What, specifically?
Palin: Um, all of them...
So she read all of most of them... why is that so hard to understand?

[...] Alaska isn't a foreign country, where it's kind of suggested, "Wow, how could you keep in touch with what the rest of Washington, D.C., may be thinking when you live up there in Alaska?" -- Palin
Nice exercise in evasion. Because I'm sure that there *are* some people, even in Alaska, who *do* read papers and stay informed, even though they're so far away from DC. It's just that Sarah isn't one of them.

So Sarah takes that 3:00 am phone call in early 2010:
Putin - "We haff just begun a full scale invahsion of Europe!"
Sarah (smiling)- "In what respect, Vladimir? I saw nothing of your intentions in last month's People or Vanity Fair magazines. I read them both cover to cover, you know. What was that about the Middle East, Vladimir? Vladimir?
