FRIDAY'S MINI-REPORT.... Today's edition of quick hits:

* Congress rushed the bailout bill to the White House this afternoon, and the president signed it into law.

* The markets had another lousy day anyway.

* Soon after, the House adjourned for the year.

* The Palins were scheduled to release some of their recent tax returns on Monday. Instead, they picked today -- late on a Friday afternoon, the day after a debate, the afternoon of a massive bailout package becoming law. What a coincidence.

* Republicans asked an Alaskan judge to block the rest of the investigation into Palin's abuse of power scandal, also known as "Troopergate." The judge denied the request yesterday, and we should get a report on the probe a week from today.

* Last night, Palin said McCain supports a measure to allow bankruptcy courts to adjust the principal on mortgages. McCain actually opposes the measure.

* Ted Stevens' felony trial will continue, as the judge in the case declined to dismiss the charges or to declare a mistrial.

* California was relying on short-term loans to finance the state government, but in light of credit crunch, there are no short-term loans. Schwarzenegger told the Treasury Department yesterday that he needs $7 billion.

* Oddly enough, Charles Krauthammer believes Obama has passed the Reagan-in-'80 credibility test, and will become president.

* Amazingly enough, Palin can now think of all kinds of Supreme Court rulings she disagrees with. You don't suppose someone prepped her on the subject, do you?

* What's more, Palin can name newspapers and magazines she reads, too.

* You caught Bill O'Reilly's latest on-air meltdown, right? This time, the target is Barney Frank.

* Palin will skip the Sunday morning shows again. Who could have guessed?

* If flag pins become the standard used by voters, John McCain is in trouble.

* And finally, "The Simpsons" tackles electronic voting machines as only it can.

Anything to add? Consider this an open thread.

Carl Cameron said that during his interview with Gov. Palin he "put it to her"?

Wow!

Her winking into the camera last night must have affected Carl even more than it affected Rich Lowry!

But seriously, Palin sounded like a ventriloquist's dummy. We should find out who was supplying the sound so we'll know who will really be running the country when McCain takes his final parachute ride.

That's because Tina Fey will be putting in another appearance as Palin when "Saturday Night Live" opens with a parody of the debate.

And it will be brutal. In the debate, Palin came off as a parody of Tina Fey doing a parody of Sarah Palin, and Tina will have to top that. Expect a lot of winkin' and smirkin' and muggin' and flirtin', you betcha.

And none of the Sunday talk show hosts would be able to sit through an interview with Palin the next morning without laughing.

But Charles Krauthammer is always wrong! I'm so confused.

Posted by: MobiusKlein on October 3, 2008 at 5:49 PM | PERMALINK

That Krauthammer piece was absolutely hilarious, albeit unintentionally. He starts off with a football metaphor that could only have been written by someone who's never actually watched a football game, and then makes the blindingly obvious observation that McCain completely blew it by picking Palin and suspending his campaign while Obama showed some admirable restraint and statesmanship. But you can practically hear him gagging at the thought of praising Obama, so he throws in a bunch of gratuitous shots at him, even bringing up Jeremiah-f'ing-Wright!

Check out this World of Warcraft trailer for it's many symbolic ties to the presidential campaign.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qgkPAxiKkiI&feature=related

My takes:

Voiceover: "Imprisoned for 10,000 years..." (McCain)

First character: Biden
Second character: Palin

And be sure to watch what the Palin character does to the old Orc when he goes down. The jokes just write themselves.

And then there's the ultimate tagline:

"You are not prepared!!"

In her interview with Carl Cameron, Palin said, "Here is what I should have told Couric, 'Katie, I got yur frigging questions right here' (grabbing her own crotch). Then I should have handed her a note card with the list of questions I wanted her to ask me."

Palin, flashing a bit shit eating grin, went on to tell Cameron, "I just got to learn how to handle these journalism elitists and Washington dogs. We got to soften up the land for reform. Shock and awe, yah!"

I would just like to call your attention to the video parody produced by comedians Sara Benincasa and Diana Saez, who are doing the totally hilarious Sarah Palin Vlog series at 236.com.

Their video from 2 days ago, Oct.1, 2008 -- showed Sarah Palin prepping for the debate by reading what else but..."The Economist!"

Not only are they funny and smart parodies of Palin, but apparently, these two very funny comedians are also psychic, because they knew what Palin was reading BEFORE PALIN DID!!

Don't miss the video!!

Last night, Palin said McCain supports a measure to allow bankruptcy courts to adjust the principal on mortgages. McCain actually opposes the measure.

I was wondering if anyone would pick up on that gaffe. It was when she was trying to duck out of the banckruptcy discussion and Biden was scoring all sorts of points about letting bankruptcy judges not only adjust mortgage rates but also lower the value of the home.

She said something like:

*That's a good idea, McCain and I would support that."

Before spouting off on her energy talking points for the fourth or fifth time.

I stopped dead when I heard it because McCain said over the weekend that he opposed such a measure. It was also very clear that she did not understand the issue at all (hence the switch to energy) but she really liked the sound of Biden's answer (which was great) and decided to try and jump on the band wagon.

Biden also nicely trapped her on the civil unions/gay marriage issue with a position that probably does not sit well with a lot of evangelicals.

She said something like "that's a good idea, McCain and I support that" before starting to read out her energy talking points for the fourth or fifth time.

I remember stopping cold when I heard her say that because it was so incredibly clear that she did not understand the issues at all (hence switching to energy) but liked the sound of Biden's answer (which was great) and wanted to claim some of the credit. She did so by offhand supporting a position that McCain specifically said he opposes.

That was one of the moments in the debate that made it clear just how out of her depth Palin really is.

Biden also out manuveured her quite nicely on the civil unions/gay marriage issue by making Palin take a position that virtually identical to Obama's and Biden's and was probably not all that well thought of by the evangelical crowd.

Regarding the Fox interview where she gets a repeat try at the question about Supreme Court cases: at 51 seconds she rails about the Kelo case and "imminent domain". She can't even get the answer right after she practices.

(The back-story here makes it a little worse. She specifically complains about the court siding with the government against property owners and against private property rights that are "so precious". However, her own screw-ups as Wasilla mayor made it necessary for the city to try to resort to an eminent domain land-grab (after Palin left office) to get legal title to the land on which she was building her sports arena. From http://dwb.adn.com/news/alaska/matsu/story/9055227p-8971221c.html: "it'll come at a cost -- perhaps $1.67 million, if not more. International real estate developer Gary Lundgren still technically owns the land under the Wasilla Multi-Use Sports Complex. Five years ago, the city filed a lawsuit against Lundgren to gain title to the land." It is also worth remembering that to pay for the arena she put the city into debt and had to impose a hefty increase in Wasilla's sales tax.)

But back to the execrable Fox video: she wants us to believe that she didn't answer the first time around because she was "annoyed"! If you believe that, I've got a bridge to nowhere to sell you.

Also, regarding her inability to name any newspapers and magazines - she was a journalism major, doggone it, also.

She's an embarrassment to the nation.

Democrats will vote for the Democrat. Republicans will vote for the Republican. That’s how it has always been.
John McCain and Joe Biden are politicians. They know their numbers, and they know Washington.
What is different about this election is culture. Where is America going, culturally?
This is where Barack Obama and Sarah Palin come in.
Some say race is a factor against Obama, but I say it is the opposite: Obama has been propelled upwards by his skin color. The positive ‘racism’ (Black-Americans supporting him, White-Americans feeling guilty about the legacy of slavery) far outweighs the few remaining pockets of negative racism (traditional bigotry) that still exist in our country.
Whereas Black-Americans account for 12 percent of America, women number about 51 percent.
This is where America’s reaction to Sarah Palin gets interesting. It is not only sexism at play, but regionalism too. Keep in mind that America’s reaction could be vastly different from the media’s reaction, which tries to intervene in how America thinks and observes for itself.
For the last decade, American women have been trying to become either the fifth ‘Manhattanite’ cast member of ‘Sex and the City’ or a ‘Desperate Housewife’ on Wisteria Lane. The White male executives who created, packaged and marketed these female stereotypes have made plenty of money as women across America spent time and money trying to become ‘Carrie Bradshaw’. But somehow, these wanna-be’s never lived it up as glamorously.
Sarah Palin is all about God, Family, Country and Shot-Guns. She is a completely New American Woman. She was not constructed by a Public Relations agency in either New York City or Los Angeles. She is not a Hollywood creation. Sarah Palin is simply a product of American small-town wholesomeness: happy childhood, hard work, self-discipline and a bright, and almost chirpy, outlook on life.
Sarah is not the high-maintenance, drama-seeking, bulimia-suffering fragile caricature of a working woman as peddled by TV.
Her husband, Todd Palin, is not a neurotic metro-sexual obsessing over the price of organic arugula, or whining about his commitment phobias to his shrink. He is a man’s man, and frankly, a woman’s man: just your regular American guy—wholesome and uncomplicated.
Sarah and Todd are American ‘retro’, but it is retro made cool all over again. They are a brand of Americana that has been tested and true—genuine, confident and mature.
Something happened to the Obama brand on the way to the election. It is as if the fashion gods decided that “Didn’t you know? No one wears Obama after Labour Day.”
Once exotic and different, the Obama brand has been turned into something weird and creepy. “Obama’s Witnesses,” “Obama’s Blue-Shirts,” “The Obama Youth Fraternity League”…Plus, after the initial swooning over him, most people still think that there’s something “off” about Obama; as if he’s hollow, or hiding something.
Today, the Obama brand has become decidedly “uncool”. That’s why people tuned out from watching him debate McCain.
On the other hand, Americans are discovering that they are intrigued by Sarah Palin. The TV pundits may want to spin things their way, but the surest measure of who won the Vice-Presidential Debate is that, at the end, the vast majority of viewers walked away from their TV sets and said to themselves, “I’d like to see more of Sarah Palin—unfiltered and uncut.”
The Obama camp may be celebrating too early. There are still plenty of people out there that haven’t made up their mind, and Obama’s triumphalism may begin to sound like arrogance, and he’s already been accused of that.
This is indeed a culturally interesting time to be an American.

Anonymous commenter wrote: "Before spouting off on her energy talking points for the fourth or fifth time."

Actually Sarah Palin only has ONE energy talking point, which is: "Drill Baby Drill!"

Her supposed "expertise" on energy issues consists exclusively of supporting more domestic oil drilling in environmentally sensitive areas, no matter how destructive, no matter how little impact it will have on US "energy supplies".

This of course dovetails nicely with her nonsensical insistence that the cause of global warming doesn't matter, what matters is doing something about it.

What needs to be "done about" global warming, of course, is to stop causing it, which means rapidly phasing out all fossil fuels, not drilling and digging up more of the shit.

When it comes to malicious dishonesty and sneering contempt for the American people, George W. Bush and Dick Cheney have nothing on Sarah Palin, and that's saying a lot.

No, Sarah Palin is a Karl Rove creation, just like George W. Bush. She's a scripted, sound-bite regurgitating, teleprompter-reading, animatronic robot.

Sarah Palin is a lying sack of shit and you are a raving, sexist bullshit artist spewing insulting stereotypes of women, who you obviously hold in contempt.

Sarah Palin is an elected official with a clear record in public office of corruption, dishonesty, incompetence, negligence, mismanagement, fiscal irresponsibility, cronyism, divisiveness, ideological extremism, and vindictive abuse of power.

Your suggestion that she represents any sort of model that American women will admire or look up to is despicable, but what one comes to expect from weak-minded, ignorant, neo-brownshirt dittohead mental slaves of Rush Limbaugh.

I listened to the entire debate on the radio, and my impression was that Palin didn’t do very well, repeatedly stammering, not answering questions, defaulting to canned talking points, using that sort of obsequiously pandering invitation to join her and John McCain in their conspiracy to overthrow the Washington establishment, not to mention saying a whole bunch of stuff that doesn’t make sense (wanting government out of the way and also wanting lots more government oversight), so I think she did worse than expected, and audio-wise, seemed less poised than her convention speech for example. And I’m not saying the visual components of the debate don’t matter, but I am wondering if she has an extraordinary ability to project a picture of confidence in a way that’s detached from the substance or reality of what she’s saying, and if so, I guess that’s pretty much part of the entrenched Republican anti-intellectual methodology: using the visceral to manipulate.

* The markets had another lousy day anyway. -- Steve Benen

Surely, you didn't expect them to recover? Yes, they tanked nearly 800 points after the House "no" vote on Monday. But, with the same "no" vote still in place and everyone running around like headless chickens, it recovered some. OTOH, Senate passed its version the day before yesterday, putting more pressure on the House and making it almost a foregone conclusion that it would pass there too, today and... Nothing all day yesterday.

It's a bad bill. The pile of crap is deeper than 7000 billion, which we will only find out as months go by (though there's CA already today). We were rushed into it on the "trust me" from the malAdministration -- the last people we should have trusted on *anything*, especially when they're trying to rush us into decisions (I-wreck, anyone?). *Of course* markets won't respond to that.

Well now... From where I -- and many of my female friends -- stand, the Palins are no such thing. Todd is an uneducated lout and a bully. The Moose Tart is just that. And several of my friends -- some of whom actually live in trailers, because that's all the home they can afford -- think of that couple not as First Lady and First Dud of Alaska, but as Trailer Trash.

I am an "older" American woman. I live in small towns, from Kodiak AK to Ozark AL, and I am on the liberal side of center, not too far.

That the political stance of Sarah Palin is not one I can identify with is the easiest assessment I make of her.

I have done much reading on her, and Sarah as a politician has no more scruples or ethics than any run-of-mill politican, but I don't see that she has any less either. She uses her power and office for whatever she can squeeze out of it, but she has also done some good.

She as a Republican applies religion where it works, mainly in church speeches and campaigns. But even so, I really don't doubt her spirituality.

She as a woman isn't anything different than what I see at soccer practice, or at parent/teacher conferences, or especially manning the booths at the Christmas Bazaar. We all associate with those super achievers who have their lives all wrapped up just so.

My issue with Sarah is her lack of honesty. She is in over her head, but she refuses to acknowledge it. That really bugs me. Right now the critical issues of our country HAVE to take precedence over Sarah Palin's drive for success. I think her selfishness in not recognizing the country's need for authenticly knowledgeable leadership is a strong indicator of her capacity to ignore signs of disaster. It is way too Bush-like and this country can't take any more Bush/Cheney. That Sarah Palin actually thinks that SHE should be in the White House just floors me.

Sarah Palin has no scope on this nations issues. She has paid little attention to them before now. What Palin has is the sudden and sweet advancement of her personal career to the VP seat. If she had any authentic thought for critical needs of this nation, she would have looked into the mirror and known that she is not (at present) the person to head the United States of America. She would do better to step back and work at increasing her circle of influence and issues to the point where gaining the VP seat would be logical.

Americans are discovering that they are intrigued by Sarah Palin? Sure, the exact same way we rubber neck at accidents.

Congress just handed arch-conservative Paulson a $700 Billion Slush Fund just over one month before a major national election.

Remember the CREEP Slush Fund? Richard Nixon's Campaign to Re-elect the President Slush Fund?

How will we know (especially before the November election) if arch-conservative Paulson diverts some of this Bail-out Slush Fund to Republican political activities, in an attempt to get McCain and Palin in the White House?

CREEP's criminal Republican activities happened before Nixon got re-elected in 1972, but American citizens didn't discover the true extent of Nixon's criminal acts until a couple of years later. Fortunately, Nixon was forced to resign in lieu of getting impeached.

I suspect a similar Republican plot involving this "manufactured" Wall Street crisis, with Congress being rushed into handing over to arch-conservative Paulson hundreds of billions of dollars just over a month before a major election...with very little oversight and any reporting on Paulson's pre-election activities with our money only happening months after the November election has been decided.

None of this, in my view, happened by chance.

Paulson, as Treasury Secretary, blowing off all the Wall Street warning signs, and then rushing an appropriations request before Congress just six weeks before the November election, with Paulson and the Republicans "talking up" the fear, trying to stampede our representatives in Congress into forking over the $700 Billion with no strings attached, no oversight, no accountability.

This sure sounds like another corrupt neo-con Republican "con job" to me.

I wonder if Paulson will keep any receipts showing how he disbursed our money over the next four weeks? I doubt it. He'll handle it just like Nixon's CREEP handled their illicit money disbursements in the early 1970s...in the shadows...probably with nothing that Paulson does with our money in the next four weeks every coming to light...or so the corrupt Republicans hope.

zli: but Americans were transfixed for 90 minutes. If the ratings are right, then half the electorate sat and watched. Do you think they were there for Biden?

Sarah Palin is a breath of fresh air. The Obama-Biden ticket now sounds like the Doom-and-Gloom ticket. Americans don't like to hear that their best days are behind them, and they don't like to invest in a one-man-cult. That's why Sarah Palin offers an incredible pyschological alternative: "voting for someone like me, since the guys who were supposed to fix things messed everything up."

Watch what happens over the next month. American attention spans are a fickle thing; they have already moved away from Obama. If Obama becomes 'boring' then his campaign is doomed when its the Repub Machine verus the Dem Machine (minus the Clinton machine that really doesn't Obama to win).

They were there for the same reason that many people watch NASCAR: they were waiting to see if she'd crash and burn. The Couric interviews provided plenty of reasons to believe that Palin would do just that. She was graded on a very forgiving curve.
Palin offers an incredible psychological alternative all right. "The guys who know about this stuff messed up so vote for someone who doesn't know anything." Suuuuuure. The guys who messed things up were members of Palin's own party: the Republicans who dismantled every regulatory safeguard that kept this from happening.
Palin is nothing more, or less, than the same bundle of folksiness, sound bites, outright lies and sloganeering as the current president. Are you better off now than you were in 2000?

As a matter of fact, America's best days are behind it. We have always been a nation of mostly silly soulless and intellectually stunted people.

For a time after WWII, when much of the rest of the industrial world lay in ruin, we thrived. No more. America, if not in absolute decline, most certainly will never be the "leader of the free world" or even the economic engine that drives it. Three of the last four presidents have assured this.

Mike and Kathy. . . are they the actors from the old anti-Hillary-healthcare-reform ads??

Just FYI, the Bill O'Reilly/Barney Frank link is:

We may see the "Troopergate" report next week, but the effort to suppress the investigation continues. The right-wing Texas law firm trying to block the investigation has filed an emergency appeal. The Alaska Supreme Court will hear arguments on Wednesday and issue a decision the next day.

It's always amazing to peek into the alternate realities inhabited by the likes of mike and kathy.

Despite Palin having net negative approval ratings...

Despite the post-debate polls showing that fewer people think she is qualified to be VP...

Despite a consistent trend for over two weeks showing both national polls and several critical battleground state polls moving toward Obama...

Despite Palin's ongoing inability to answer any questions that aren't pre-scripted or the softest of softballs...

They think Palin is a breath of fresh air that is going to turn the whole election around.

They think Obama-Biden have become the boring, old-news, doom-and-gloom ticket that nobody likes.

They think that the American people will agree with their Bizarro World viewpoint and that the election is practically over in favor of the McCain-Palin ticket.

Wow!

"The Economist is one of the magazines cited to have been read by Sarah Palin. I wonder if she could have answered the question: "And where is The Economist published?""
"I mean, they always misspell 'color'!""

Heck, ask her what language it's written in. Heh

Palin lied about the Kelo eminent domain decision. Her dithering allowed a developer to scoop up the land she wanted to build her boondoggle hockey rink on so she took it via eminent domain which has cost Wasilla lotsa $$ in legal fees and a judgment of $300,000 which the landowner is appealing as way too little. Yet in the video she says that should never ever happen.

If people haven't been watching Letterman recently, and especially last night, they have been missing "The Crucifixion of John McCain" with many -- not all -- of the nails being decorated with glasses and beehive haircuts. And it hasn't just been jokes.

"I think about 9/11 and Bush being in the airplane, not being allowed to land and Cheney running the country from his secret room." (After a discussion of Palin and the debates with Brian Williams.) He didn't have to go on, the image was indelible.

And unlike Keith and Rachel -- wonderful, but their audience is already 99% pro-Obama (or think he's too moderate) -- Everybody watches Letterman, particularly the undecided, moderate-information voters.

He's probably cost McCain two points in the polls by himself.

I'm a CPA. A quick pass reveals those tax returns are full of estimates. I guarantee you he doesn't have receipts for most of his Sch C and Home Office deductions. I also absolutely guarantee he's lying about the mileage log (note the round numbers). I also think it's odd he bought an Arctic Cat for $2,781 in June '05 and sold it 12/31/07(??? another made up thing) for $5,000. These tax returns are not the kind of thing you file if you ever expect scrutiny.

Palin is nothing more, or less, than the same bundle of folksiness, sound bites, outright lies and sloganeering as the current president. Are you better off now than you were in 2000?

In other words, Palin is W in pantyhose (jeez, there's a scary image for ya).
