'TURN THE PAGE'.... Explaining the campaign's intention to shift from policy to personal attacks, Greg Strimple, one of John McCain's top advisers, told the Washingtn Post that the campaign is "looking forward to turning a page on this financial crisis." It's a quote Strimple probably wishes now he hadn't made.

The Obama campaign's Dan Pfeiffer told the Politico yesterday that McCain's "desire to avoid discussing the economy is something we will remind voters of everyday for the next month."

And according to the prepared text of a speech Obama is scheduled to deliver today in Asheville, North Carolina, the senator is taking full advantage of the opportunity.

"[O]n Friday, we learned that we'd lost another 159,000 American jobs in September. It was the ninth straight month of job losses -- more than three quarters of a million this year, including 24,000 here in North Carolina. And it came just as we finished a week in which our financial markets teetered on the brink of disaster.

"Yet instead of addressing these crises, Senator McCain's campaign has announced that they plan to turn the page on the discussion about our economy and spend the final weeks of this campaign launching Swiftboat-style attacks on me.

"Think about that for a second. 'Turn the page' on the economy? We're facing the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, and John McCain wants us to 'turn the page?' Well, I know the policies he's supported these past eight years and wants to continue are pretty hard to defend. I can understand why Senator McCain would want to 'turn the page' and ignore this economy.

"But I also know this: You're trying to pay your bills every week and stay above the water -- you can't ignore it. You're worrying about whether your job will be there a month from now -- you can't ignore it. You're worrying about whether you can pay your mortgage and stay in your house -- you can't turn the page. [...]

"Senator McCain and his operatives are gambling that he can distract you with smears rather than talk to you about substance. They'd rather try to tear our campaign down than lift this country up. It's what you do when you're out of touch, out of ideas, and running out of time."

The Obama campaign is laying the groundwork for the rest of the week very effectively, and with some ill-advised quotes, the McCain campaign is helping them. The next time McCain and his surrogates bring up Ayers (or Rezko, or Wright), the immediate and obvious question will be, "Why are you trying to stop talking about the economy?"

Hey, John McCain, where's the beef?

All the people who were screeching loudly about how Obama was losing it 2 - 3 weeks ago should sit up and take notice.

As for myself, I know I'm a lot more comfortable with the fact that the candidate who had a long-term strategic vision will be the one who is inaugurated in January. It's going to take that type of long-range vision and commitment to strategy to get us out of the mess we're in.

I guess the McCain campaign didn't watch "The War Room" enough. As other campaigners before have said, "It's the economy, stupid."

It's time to "Turn the page" on all those Bush/McSame policies.

Considering McCain's upcoming sleaze and slander campaign, I have only one word for both McCain and Palin: Scum.

We're seeing a master at work. And not just a master, but a Grownup.
No wonder Bill Clinton resents him.

Why? For one reason, the McCain campaign will claim they tried to score early by addressing poverty in the south but the press didn't cover it. So they switched to the character issue and tried to score on McCain's biography. Similarly, no catch. So, by default, which is about all you can say about McCain's entire candidacy, they decided to gain media attention by going after Obama and selling Mother Sixpack.

So, they start on an economic message early on. It got them no traction, but did they really try? Their objective was just to gain points rather than to really dig in and establish a footing on the economic front. They had a huge opportunity to plant their flag on the high ground while the democratic primary was being decided. They took a little stab and then abandoned the hill. For McCain, who said we could have won the Viet Nam war, to give up that economic fight so early and then to blame the media for not covering their campaign on it says a lot about his ability to stay on mission. McCain's mission is obviously not to put the country first but to put his own ambition to become president first. And there lies his two faced fraud.

McCain has run his campaign so hard onto the rocks that Obama need not attack him on any level. All he need do is point out the obvious. He stays above the fray.

The entire McCain operation has reduced itself to feeding smears to AM radio screech monkeys - no more, no less. Yet they think they're entitled to run the country. Can anyone remember a more incompetent national campaign?

Scarborough, whom that fool Matthews referred to as a reporter, as much said that by next week when this "financial crisis" is off the tube and front pages, McCain's strategy is to paint Obama as inherently weak as an executive.

Posted by: grumpyoldman on October 5, 2008 at 2:40 PM | PERMALINK

It may still be a bit early to call McCain's campaign "incompetent". But it is, without any doubt, the most despicable in modern American history. The Party That Wrecked America nominated a man with a trainwreck of a conscience.

Scarborough, whom that fool Matthews referred to as a reporter,

Matthews might be fronting tough on Palin, but you know, just as in '00 & '04, that RPCV* & Carter staffer is going to pull the lever for Mc Cain. CM is no different than Brit Hume or Jonah Goldberg or Rich Lowry (an Hardball favourite, from way back (though, to Matthews (dis)credit, one should say the same of Katrina van den Heuven (vomit!)) -- he wants to eat the corn out of Sarah Palin's stool. & easier to do that if she's resident in the Naval Observatory.

*My Peace Corps time wasn't always peaches & gravy, but I am ashamed to share that title, Returned Peace Corps Volunteer, with Matthews. Brahsome needs to go away.

Great review of Palin in the London Review of Books. A bit on the long side but weel worth the read.

John McCain has once again made himself a prisoner---but this time, instead of doing stupid things and getting captured by others, he's doing stupid things and getting captured by himself.

The political self-immolation of John McCain continues unabated....

Posted by: Steve on October 5, 2008 at 2:49 PM | PERMALINK

I thought the same thing bcamarda did above - that Team Obama is now finding a way to work the word(s) "gambling" or "roll the dice" or "betting" into every speech in a nice, subtle, "in the flow" way when referring to McCain, a near subliminal drumbeat about it being risky to vote for the unstable McCain. This is really, really good messaging going on now from the good guys.

Posted by: zeitgeist on October 5, 2008 at 4:07 PM | PERMALINK

This campaign is definitely a page-turner. Will Sarah Palin, the vocal yokel, use her "Shock and Aw Shucks" schtick to wink her way into the presidency while McCain nods off? Or will Obama the Steady take his leftful place in the White House?

Yes, this is noble: The next time McCain and his surrogates bring up Ayers (or Rezko, or Wright), the immediate and obvious question will be, "Why are you trying to stop talking about the economy?" However it isn't good enough. The next time McCain & camp bring up Ayers et al, it is time to bring up Keating, the AIP, etc.

Given that we are discussing the multi-talented John McCain (he can lie through his teeth while scarfing barbecue and pat his tummy at the same time), I think he'd be good at doing both, which---other than spending his trophy-wife's fortune---is about the only talent he has....

At the same time....

Posted by: Steve on October 5, 2008 at 6:38 PM | PERMALINK

John's not the only McCain to put his foot in his mouth. Brother Joe was addressing a campaign group in Loudoun County, Va., this weekend, and he jokingly referred to the inner suburbs of Arlington and Alexandria as "communist country." GOP officials quickly distanced themselves from the remarks...especially since John has a condo in Arlington.

Joe McCain sounds like he could be John's Billy Carter. Thankfully, I doubt he'll ever get the chance.

I've never seen a McCain ad that lays out his policies at all. The only thing I've heard is how he and Pallid are "mavericks" and some general mudslinging towards Obama. But I'm from Michigan, the guy is toast here.

"Despite my initial concerns about the subpoenas, we respect the court's decision to defer to the Legislature," [Alaska Attorney General Talis] Colberg said. "We are working with Senator Hollis French to arrange for the testimony of the seven state employee plaintiffs."
