MONDAY'S CAMPAIGN ROUND-UP....Today's installment of campaign-related news items that wouldn't generate a post of their own, but may be of interest to political observers:

* Joe Biden's mother-in-law, Bonny Jean Jacobs, died yesterday at the age of 78. Biden will be off the campaign trail for a couple of days.

* Now we know who to blame for foisting Palin on the world: Steve Schmidt.

* The director of McCain's campaign in Michigan is not at all pleased with the senator's announcement that he will blow off the state this year.

* USA Today has a good item on Hillary Clinton's efforts to help the Obama/Biden ticket.

* It looks like the McCain campaign is starting to worry, at least a little, about the electoral vote in eastern Nebraska.

* Republican officials in Virginia seem to be increasingly worried about McCain's chances.

* John McCain's brother referred to two major areas in Northern Virginia as "communist country." He later apologized.

* In Ohio, the latest Columbus Dispatch poll shows Obama leading McCain by seven, 49% to 42%. There are, however, some concerns about the methodology.

* In New Mexico, an Albuquerque Journal poll shows Obama leading McCain by five, 45% to 40%.

* In Minnesota, a Star Tribune poll shows Obama leading McCain by 18, 55% to 37%. There were a few questions about the methodology of this one, too.

* In Colorado, a Mason-Dixon poll shows Obama and McCain tied at 44% each.

* In Maine, Rasmussen shows Obama leading McCain by five, 51% to 46%.

* In Washington state, Rasmussen shows Obama leading McCain by 10, 53% to 43%.

* The McCain campaign is not optimistic about Liddy Dole's re-election chances in North Carolina.

* Retiring Sen. John Warner (R) is considering endorsing the Democrat in the race to replace him, former Gov. Mark Warner (no relation).

"Now we know who to blame for foisting Palin on the world: Steve Schmidt"

Of course Steve Schmidt is responsible. Schmidt is a Rove acolyte, carrying out tactics from Rove's playbook, one of which is--when things look bad for your candidate, distract the media.

Incidentally, to some extent, the barbecue media (thanks Bob Cesca) seems to be falling for it.

Steve Schmidt and McCain are two of a kind: Short-term "wins" trump long-term considerations always. It's comforting to know (NOT!) that McCain lets guys like Schmidt and Rush Limbaugh (who first started touting Palin months ago) make decisions for him.

Here's something interesting: On the NYT website, under "most popular," Obama was the No. 1 search term, Palin No. 2. No surprises there.

But McCain? No. 13!

I disagree. If we're lucky, Hillary will retire at the end of her current term and never seek public office again.

Now we know who to blame for foisting Palin on the world: Steve Schmidt.

I predict that after Nov. 4, Democrats will be thanking him.

The McCain campaign is not optimistic about Liddy Dole's re-election chances in North Carolina.

...and don't let the door smack your hoopskirt on the way out, Bee-atch!

I'd like to see an Obama ad that details some highlights of Obama's record of actual movement/ action/experience--because I'm hearing that McCain is going to keep hounding at the no experience/ too naive card--and some undecided are feeling queasy about the "New Guy".

I'd also like to hear more about what it really means to keep America safe and strong--as this is another sort of visceral sense that many feel McCain exudes more of (decidedly less now since his recent erratic behavior and flip flopping during the economic crisis).

Emphasizing things like 'safe and strong' means someone who has the foresight and gumption to say no when it's unpopular, no to wasting our precious resources on a war we never had any business engaging. And someone who honors our vets fully--doesn't abandon them upon their return home.

I wonder if McCain or Palin have even expressed their condolences to the Biden family?

She was quick to bless his wife for being a school-teacher--how quick now will she to express her sincere sorrow for her loss?

Hospice is a great thing I might add--typically funded by Medicare. (sorry if that sounds horribly exploitive, but it's true).

On @ 12:25

I agree. I've been wondering why there hasn't been a spot highlighting both the Lugar-Obama Bill or the "Google the Gov't" Bill.

There's two real, concrete bills that have everyday salience. I think it would go a long way to dispelling all the "Obama's never done nuthin'" talk I hear.

no, Steve Schmidt is NOT responsible for the choice of Sarah Palin as VP candidate: JOHN MCCAIN IS!!!!! Schmidt may have suggested Palin, but McCain chose her. Remember, the fish rots from the head

Seeing as how items about global warming occasionally make it into the "round-up" of things that don't merit their own blog post, I offer this thought here.

Sarah Palin said to Newsmax that she is “not one though who would attribute” climate change “to being man-made”.

Sarah Palin said during the debate “I’m not one to attribute every man — activity of man to the changes in the climate” -- by which she presumably meant the opposite, i.e. that she was not one to attribute changes in the climate to the activities of “man”.

However, Governor Palin did, as she mentioned in the debate, sign into law the Alaska Climate Change Sub-Cabinet, which states on its website the following:

“The rise in the Earth’s average surface temperature is known as global warming. Scientists attribute the accelerating rate of global warming to manmade greenhouse gas emissions” (emphasis added).

Had I the opportunity, I would like to ask Governor Palin:

“You cite your creation of the Alaska Climate Change Sub-Cabinet as evidence that as a public official you are ‘going to get there to positively affect the impacts’ of climate change.

However, your own repeated public statements about the cause of climate change are flatly contradicted by the sub-cabinet that you yourself created, which on its own public website clearly agrees with the overwhelming majority of the world’s scientists that accelerating global warming is caused by human emissions of greenhouse gases.

We have now seen eight years during which the Bush-Cheney administration denied, suppressed, censored and lied about the efforts of the government’s own scientists and scientific agencies to inform the American people about the human causation of climate change.

Is it your plan, if elected, to continue that policy of deliberate deceit?”

I would also like to ask John McCain at tomorrow night's "town hall" debate:

"Senator McCain, you have publicly agreed with the overwhelming majority of the world's scientists that human activities are causing dangerous climate change. You have proposed legislation to establish a mandatory nationwide cap on the carbon emissions that are causing climate change. Your running mate, Governor Palin, appointed an Alaska state sub-cabinet on climate change, which also agrees that human activities are the cause of accelerating climate change.

However, Governor Palin herself still questions whether climate change is caused by humans or is "natural", and seems to think that it is somehow possible to address climate change without understanding its cause. Have you informed the Governor that she is incorrect? Does Governor Palin agree with and support your calls for a national cap on carbon emissions?"

Steve Schmidt is your new Mark Penn.

Doesn't it seem like Mason-Dixon polls show Obama running worse than other polls do? I think there was a Virginia poll a couple days ago from M-D that showed Obama and McCain even. (I think. It was a M-D poll somewhere.) What does M-D do differently?

Posted by: Tim H on October 6, 2008 at 2:11 PM | PERMALINK

Weird. Steve Schmidt looks like James Guckert (Jeff Gannon), the male prostitute who overnighted at the White House. And Schmidt is an acolyte of Rove's? So... was Guckert/Gannon at the White House to "meet with" Rove?

Robert E. Lee's "People's Army of Northern Virginia."

Checked it out. Oct 2 poll, M-D had McCain up 48-45 in Virginia.
