DEBATE POLLS.... Everyone who watched last night's debate came to their own conclusions about the candidates' performances, but there's that other question to consider: what did everyone else think?
Reiterating a point from last week, snap-polls aren't the most reliable measurements, but for those of us anxious for data, the surveys at least offer a guide to public opinion.
CBS News conducted a poll of uncommitted voters, and 39% thought Obama won, 27% thought McCain won, and 35% saw the debate as a draw.
CNN conducted a quick national poll and found that 54% of debate viewers thought Obama won, while 30% thought McCain came out ahead. The CNN poll also found that Obama's favorability rating went from 60% before the debate to 64% after, while McCain's remained unchanged at 51%.
NBC, CBS, and Fox News all conducted focus groups during the debate, and all three sided with Obama.
Stan Greenberg's focus group also really seemed to like Obama.
As soon as the debate was over, I thought it was pretty obvious Obama had enjoyed a very good night. It's reassuring to see other voters reach the same conclusion.

Where was John McCain? Did he sit this one out and send in his "clown"?

Hmm, I know she's Edgar's puppet, but did I miss seeing Sarah in the townhall tonight?. . .

Objectively---and I do mean objectively, because I've spent several hours now, going over the debate, looking for the least minuscule inkling that McCain had done what he needed to do in order to put his "express" back on the tracks---this debate goes to Obama. There is no doubt that McCain was an articulate individual last night, and he was more animated in moving about the stage than he's been in quite a while, but his answers continue to be vague blurring of talking points---many of which have been debunked repeatedly, and some that should, by necessity, be labeled outright acts of lying to the People of these United States.
In the end, the outcome itself, the effect of that outcome, and the causes which lead to those effects, should by week's end result in more than one national poll that places Obama in a double-digit lead over McCain. If the rats aboard his now-obviously-sinking ship have the least bit of common sense, they'll at least dust off their resumes while they're donning the life-jackets---because the final lifeboats were lowered last night with this debate.
The issue now constitutes an electoral mandate for Obama on November 4th---and even FOX knows it.

Obama must have done really well; as of 5:50AM CST Yahoo has no headline about a debate on their homepage. Just a hint, Steve; Palin is the woman.

I can't take my eyes off CNN's EKG chart when I watch these debates. The pattern I saw was that these people really don't like old overused talking points. They don't like negativity. They like compliments and "candy". And they have no idea what is true and what is not. The also seemed to like Obama a lot more than McCain, though women reacted far more than men. In fact, I often wondered if all the men had fallen asleep. After the debate, though, Soledad Obrien asked who was "now" leaning toward each candidate, and McCain won 14-11 - a bit odd considering their EKG results.

Palin is doing just that. Her non-productive vitriol is her application to be the nominee in 2012.

I kinda felt questioning the "reliability" of polls on something as abstract as who "won" the debate is kind of silly, but you are right! Clearly if Palin won, then this stuff should be taken with however many spoons full of salt one can afford at current inflated prices.
Then again, maybe I really have been underestimating Governor Palin. She clearly has some very loyal movement/evangelical supporters responding to the pollsters ;-)
Be honest Steve, was this a Freudian slip? Were you thinking she winked at you?

My favorite last night was Frank Lutz. When Brit Hume asked him to ask his focus group who did better on the economy, Klutz asked for hands for each candidate and less than 10 out of thirty raised their hand for McCain. Klutz turns to the camera and said, "There you have it - half thought McCain did better on the economy".
Brit Hume laughed at him.

Actually, the irony in the above quote lies in the name of the individual quoted; the name "Jeff Davis" has been on the American political stage before, in the guise of the President of the Confederate States of America. Given the Freudian actuality here, I think that Palin, rather than jockeying for the 2012 GOP nomination, may well be positioning herself for an attempt to lead Alaska out of the Union as the de facto head of the Alaska Independence Party.
The logic here might even be viewed as irrefutable, when one takes into consideration (1) her Pentecostal leanings, (2) her acutely-obvious disregard for both the Rule of Law and the Necessity of Truth, and (3) her penchant for supporting the goals and activities of the AIP.
The term "theo-political insurrectionist" applies in depth here. Worthy of a separate discussion, perhaps?

I suppose that we can hope that she tries that stunt. It would be the end of her politically. However, I don't believe the Governor is that dumb. The vast majority in Alaska are very patriotic.
BTW: The historical Jeff Davis was named Jefferson, not Jeffrey.

Has any woman been more photographed in this millennium? Can any netizen go a day without seeing 100 photos of her. I'm beginning to appreciate her looks and moods. Huffington, at least photographically, has almost become a Palin website. If not in 08, this could be dangerous later on.

Clearly a win for Obama last night - he was calm, cool and strong in his speeches, and his come backs. Not getting into the dirt of the political game is smart - leave that for the ads and scripted talks. The debates shouold be about substance of the issues and I thought Obama clearly showing that and McCain looked and talked old and crotchety.....bad night for him.

The more I read these things, the more I realize that undecided voters seem to be primarily people who just haven't really paid any attention at all up to this point. They have undoubtedly absorbed some information here and there, but they don't seem to have directly exposed themselves to listening to the candidates, reading their plans, etc. And that favors Obama, because as soon as they actually sit down and listen to both of these guys for an hour, well...

The best line was definitely Obama's.
He concedes that he may be green behind the ears. Also concedes that McCain may be the somber and the serious one. McCain smiles. And then BAM! But McCain is the one who said Bomb Bomb Bomb Iran.
The look on McCain's face: priceless.
Best Visa commercial ever.

This election will be a disaster for the Republicans. They will need to completely retool themselves. they're gassed and their tried and true tricks have failed. Palin will be viewed as one of the biggest political blunders in modern history. The second McCain conceeds the Republican establishment will collectively tear her to pieces and lay much of the blame at her feet.
2012? She probably will even have lost her inevitable Fox News job long before then.
Posted by: on October 8, 2008 at 9:53 AM | PERMALINK
Gregor -- I totally agree with you that blame and future lessons learned will be attributed to Palin. She was a stupid choice and is getting worse by the day as people really see the "trick" McCain tried to pull on us all.
On another note - McCain was srushed last night in all areas. He looked old, crabby, a bully, not fresh, aloof and totally out of his element......bye bye.

I agree McCain has aged a few years in the general. His thought pattern is erratic. Its becoming increasingly hard to follow his logic. His blatant ass-kissing, my friends, makes it worse. The hard truth here is if the one job requirement for a president was to make calm, cool, and collected decisions that he can sell to the American public in a way that makes them comfortable with it, McCain would not qualify.
Obama may be long-winded. But, its easy to discern that he uses a very deliberate, methodical process to arrive at his conclusions. On balance his decisions are right.

If you count a night full of artfully dodged questions, Obama had a good night.
With the "No Follow-up" rule intact, dodged questions flew fast and furious on both sides. Therefore I proclaimed the debate a draw.
It's unfair to ask Obama to unilaterally disarm. I will simply say that any future debates like this one, will have one less viewer.
Worthless. The whole thing.
We all know it was McCain that wanted to avoid substance, but given Obama's oratory skills, such a format benefits him. I hope he cares enough to not seek it out deliberately going forward.

We know that the contest is very stressful and we understand the level that some people are an in life.We need to really get focused on the reality and see that McCain has no conversation at all. He is brainwashed an it is rediculus at the least. McCain is only favored by those people that are just republicans period. You know the ones that listen to talk radio every single day that just hate for no reason. As a matter of fact you must look at the real message in the way mcCain has to answer a questions with the whole military story on each and every answer he gives on every single question before he half answers the question that we cannot remember anyway.Obama has to put up with a lot of people that wishes their children and grand children would hate Obama like they do in their lonely lifeless hearts .But the truth is the fact that life has people so rapped up in the way they wre raised it they think if they do the right thing they will be outcasts in this world. You Know how we are so consumed with what our parents want that we know there is no way that we can get our parents to love a person like Barack's mom and her parents. Some people disown people for whatever reason. This goes back to fear and hatred that has yet to be found unbreakable in this American life. We are in a wild life that only can change by those we see at the mall and out to eat with each other and the bystanders in the room cannot stand the people they see in front of them. I have people that are kind and loving to on another in my prescence and I am mad at them because they love who they love. Allow me the chance to show you about who I am. Allow me to try a new way to make a better life in this world. I see no person with signs saying the are going to hate the government for this mess we are in. So let us see how we are going to turnout this time around either McCain or Obama can win then it is what it will be. I just right today for a little talk in the strong belief of let us do what is right . If there is power there is a way to get what we want where we have the backing. If there is backing then you get what you want. If there is a person with the generous portion of change and means well and has the support to make it happen and the voters that will get persons in the senate and the house that will follow a leader who has trust and truth then we are in business to chang. I believe there is a person that will be able to make that all happen in the future. We are in the time of a following that things can be done and will if the momentum is not changed by haters of good. If this person is killed we are scared of power and the growth that has to be delivered to the masses.
