COALITION OF THE WILD-EYED.... In the latest example of Republican rage, a woman screamed "traitor!" in reference to Barack Obama, during one of John McCain's tirades about his Democratic opponent. McCain looked in the woman's direction, said nothing, and continued on with his speech. It came a half-day after another Republican yelled "bomb Obama!" during a debate for Senate candidates in Georgia, and it's obviously part of a pattern.

Watching the hate, fear, and ignorance play out once again today, it occurred to me that Karl Rove and the Bush-Cheney campaign used Democratic anger to their advantage four years ago.

This ad, for example, was titled, "Kerry's Coalition of the Wild-Eyed." It lies and accuses Al Gore and George Soros of comparing Bush to Hitler -- it also falsely attributes an ad to MoveOn.org -- but putting the slander aside, the ad featured aggressive criticism of the president and the Bush White House. The viewer was told these were the "faces of John Kerry's Democratic Party." It concluded, "This is not a time for pessimism and rage."

There was also this spot, called, "Angry Democrats," featuring denunciations of Bush from Howard Dean, Dick Gephardt, et al. It asks the viewer, "Tired of pessimism and angry protest? Tired of negative attacks? You have a choice."

That, of course, was four years ago, when Democratic criticism of Bush-Cheney was substantive, and by comparison to 2008, high minded. Now we have Republican candidates for national office standing by and saying nothing even as their supporters call for violence against the Democratic nominee.

Under the circumstances, those Bush spots from four years ago warning against "pessimism and rage," and denouncing the "wild-eyed" Democrats, seem rather amusing in hindsight.

Yet the MSM still seems to be committed to being "balanced" and doing he-said/ she-said "journalism." And bitching that a plane smells bad. See A. Cooper's dismissal of Gergen's comments on the hate McPalin is spewing.

Slightly off thread, but...

I believe the Great Gonzo had these McCain/Palin supporters in mind when he wrote this several years ago:

"We have become a Nazi monster in the eyes of the whole world -- a nation of bullies and bastards who would rather kill than live peacefully. We are not just Whores for power and oil, but killer whores with hate and fear in our hearts. We are human scum, and that is how history will judge us. No redeeming social value. Just whores. Get out of our way, or we'll kill you. "Well, shit on that dumbness, George W. Bush does not speak for me or my son or my mother or my friends or the people I respect in this world. We didn't vote for these cheap, greedy little killers who speak for America today -- and we will not vote for them again in 2002. Or 2004. Or ever. "Who does vote for these dishonest shitheads? Who among us can be happy and proud of having all this innocent blood on our hands? Who are these swine? These flag-sucking half-wits who get fleeced and fooled by stupid rich kids like George Bush? "They are the same ones who wanted to have Muhammad Ali locked up for refusing to kill gooks. They speak for all that is cruel and stupid and vicious in the American character. They are the racists and hate mongers among us -- they are the Ku Klux Klan. I piss down the throats of these Nazis. "And I am too old to worry about whether they like it or not. Fuck them."

How about ads featuring aggressive criticism of Obama and Biden? The viewer is told these are the "faces of John MCain's Republican Party." It concluded, "This is not a time for pessimism and rage." And also this spot, called, "Angry Republicans," featuring denunciations of Obama from McShame, Phailin, angry mobs, et al. Ask the viewer, "Tired of pessimism and angry protest? Tired of negative attacks instead of solutions to critical issues? You have a choice."

Given the McCain is a short little runt who likes to blow up and poke people in the chest with his finger, how has he gotten through life without someone cleaning his clock? Or is he one of those martinets who likes to pick a fight, but quickly backs down when you stand up to him?

This is probably a minority interpretation of that "traitor" video, but it struck me that what is actually happening there is, as McCain is speaking, a protester starts causing some sort of ruckus (there's a lot of shouting for a few seconds), and then the crowd starts chanting "U-S-A! U-S-A!", the same thing the crowds at the RNC did to drown out protesters. Only then does the one woman shouting "Traitor!" become audible. My guess is she's shouting at the protester.

Not that this explanation makes it any more palatable.

from other thread (i got in late). . .

as much as i hate to say it, i think that the campaign and surrogates are going to have to push the palin-alaska independence party story. if she is going to use "obama finds america so imperfect" lines, what is more symbolic of finding america so imperfect that you support/affiliate/join (in todd's case) a party that seeks for the state to secede from the union? i think many do not yet know about this since it was reported on when palin first came on the scene and, on the right, most of it was bundled into the "unfair liberal media attacks" including the rumors about the baby really being her daughter's. but, this is real and the mccain campaign has had to admit it. her video presentation to the aip's convention is on you tube. why not push this story to the fore-front? if they are going to start hitting with rezko and wright, i would prefer a pre-emptive strike that shuts it down. thoughts?

The moment of our "American Krystallnacth" fast approaches now; the opportunities to turn back the rhetoric have sailed beyond McCain's reach---and his Pentecostal Puppet won't even think about asking people to calm down, because it is against her theological nature to do so. To her, anything not in unwavering agreement to her manifesto is the enemy, and worthy of nothing more than eradication.

What these hatemongers want is obedience---either willingly, or via the yoke of aggression. The only issue now is whether we submit (and risk forever losing our Constitutional rights and freedoms), or fight to keep those rights and freedoms.

Aren't there any Republicans of stature within the party who can do an intervention with the McCain-Palin campaign?

At the very least, shouldn't a group of very prominent Republican lawmakers and party elders write a letter to McCain & Palin about the conduct of their campaign and release it to the public?

The party needs to take some responsibility and some action.

I estimate a 50% chance of someone actually shooting at Obama this year. I hope that they are unsuccessful. This is the logical outcome of this vitriolic and hateful campaign, using words similar to those used for Jews before WW II. When the vultures come home to roost and gunfire breaks out, the idiots writing for WaPo and the NY Times will say “what a surprise”. In their fearful desire for “balance” they refuse to see the KKK growing in our country. I know many McCain supporters who are fine and decent. The McCain campaign leadership, however, are dangerous scum, eagerly whipping up hate and suspicion among economically stressed whites, seeking to win the election at all costs.

Funny thing, foreign reporters can see the problem. Agence France Presse filed this story: WAUKESHA, Wisconsin (AFP) - Shouts of “terrorist” and “treason” aimed at Barack Obama have echoed around Republican rallies, whipping up into alarming, hate-filled frenzies against the Democratic White House hopeful.

Republican presidential nominee John McCain has taken to asking, “Who is the real Barack Obama?” at rallies this week, leading one supporter in Pennsylvania, a blue-collar battleground state to shout back, “he is a bomb.”

Chants of “Nobama, Nobama” mingled with cries of “terrorist,” as one banner in the crowd declared: “Go ahead, let the dogs out.”

Can there be reconciliation after such a campaign, especially with the massive economic problems which we face?

Gee, WHEN Obama wins the presidency, perhaps all of these closet racists and assorted yahoos will vow to leave the country.
Now, there aren't many places they can all move to; places that want white, right-wing "patriots." There are too many "other" kinds of people in paradises such as Alabama, Mississippi, or Idaho. Perhaps we could convince all of them to move to Alaska! The state could then secede and the place would become a fairly amusing broth of twenty to thirty million "values voters," a last, vast bastion of true free market principles, wealthy elites, and the racially pure.
---And they all could enjoy the long cold winters together.

"At the very least, shouldn't a group of very prominent Republican lawmakers and party elders write a letter to McCain & Palin about the conduct of their campaign and release it to the public?"

I don'tthink this out of the question. Certainly, I expect to see some prominant Republicans outright endorse Obama or at least disavow McCain publically. This has become toxic in a way that could spell profound problems for the Republican Party post-election.

Right now they have to hope Obama breaks under the economic crisis or completely fails in general. No name Republican will want to go into 2012 with the stench of McCain and Palin on them.

McCain is in the last few weeks of his politcal career. Palin is sailing off into national joke land.

And I agree, a 50% chance someone takes a shot at President Obama. Sadly, he will probably be safer abroad than in the US. I do believe he'll win in a landslide (or near landslide) at this point. That will drive the lunatic fringe oozing into the McCain/Pallin rallies go wild.

Is it beond the pale to think that the angry cries from the crowds at McShame's rallies are plants? That it's all planned by the Roverians to stir up a lynch mob atmosphere. If you can't win an election honestly, or steal it dishonestly (which remains to be seen), create civil unrest which will provide a fig leaf for postponement or nullification, and quite possibly Marshall law.

I don't think it's so unlikely, given what Rove has managed in the past.
