ARE SPOUSES OFF THE TABLE OR NOT?.... As recently as June, there was one thing both campaigns agreed on: spouses were not fair game. The McCain campaign used to say, "Senator McCain agrees with Senator Obama that spouses should not be an issue in this campaign, and he has stated that position frequently."

The McCain campaign has since taken subtle rhetorical shots at Michelle Obama, but nothing especially overt. The Obama campaign, meanwhile, has steered clear of Cindy McCain altogether, even when she's entered the arena and taken cheap shots.

With that in mind, the McCain campaign's attacks yesterday warrant an explanation.

The McCain campaign is now broadening their attack on Obama's past association with William Ayers to include Michelle Obama -- even though McCain has repeatedly said spouses should be off limits during the campaign.

The attack? Bernardine Dohrn, Ayers' wife and fellow former Weatherman, went to work in 1984 for the major Chicago law firm of Sidley & Austin, and three years later, Michelle joined the mega-firm as well.

That's the entire attack. We wish we were joking. But we aren't.

Yep, the McCain campaign hosted an official conference call yesterday featuring Obama critic John Murtagh, who's been emphasizing the Bill Ayers "issue" this week. On the call, Murtagh argued that Michelle Obama and Bernardine Dohrn worked at the same Chicago law firm in the late 1980s. The campaign argued that this "connection" suggested that there was an Obama-Ayers "relationship" going all the way back to 1987.

This has to be a top contender for Stupidest McCain Argument of the Week.

Did the campaign offer any evidence that Michelle Obama and Bernardine Dohrn even knew each other at an enormous firm with hundreds of lawyers? No. But they very possibility that the two knew each other is enough for the unhinged GOP ticket to make a bizarre degrees-of-separation attack.

If this was an incoherent argument on some right-wing blog, it'd be laughable. But this was the official message of the McCain campaign yesterday afternoon.

"I would emphasize that we've all been focusing on Senator Obama," Murtagh said. "I think we need to speak to his wife."

These guys keep managing to sink into lower depths of depravity.

I keep picturing John McCain sitting outside in the autumn, like Al Pacino at the end of 'Godfather II', as the camera slowly pulls away from him.

I'm beginning to think that John asked Sarah to be VP because she was so adept at sleaze.

Her attempts to hide emails via a Yahoo account probably got John to thinking that she had a gift with the "computer" world.

When you look at Sarah's rise in AK, much of her success lies in slander, some of which has now come to light and gone global!

The McCain't camp is possibly running one of the most despicable campaign's in recent history.

I say let 'em trash Michelle. Then we can turn our sights, rightfully so, on Cindy Loo.

Does the path of association between Michelle Obama and Bernardine Dohrn include Kevin Bacon?

Posted by: terryf on October 11, 2008 at 4:42 PM | PERMALINK

Can we start talking about McCain's association with G. Gordon "shoot-those-federal-law-enforcement-officers-in-the-head" Liddy now? Put Liddy in the same box as some of McCain's "supporters" over the past few weeks, throw in a healthy dose of secessionist vitriol from the AIP, the end-times-initiating rubbish from the beyond-xenophobic malcontents within the overall Pentecostal movement---and I think we might have the makings of a good story.

All about how McCain and Palin are nothing more than a couple of terrorist-hugging sociopaths.

The greater fear, however, remains thus: To what depths of depravity will the McCain/Palin machine stoop, once they've lost the election?

Maybe it is Liberal Rage which causes this type of reaction to McCain's attacks. The first requirement for a smear like this is that there is one tiny, insignificant fact around which is built a large question mark.

Why? Because then they can be sure that there are no witnesses to refute their lies, there are no competing facts. It also disables any pushback. Legitimate pushback can be characterized as part of a cover-up.

And the focus is still on what is not known, so the attacks can always continue.

Bottom line: push-back is what they want.

Maybe a better way to address the situation is to get them to admit that they don't know, that they are just guessing. Ask them, do you know xyz, do you have any more evidence? Convince me!

From their website: "Sidley is a truly global law firm, with more than 1800 lawyers in 16 offices. We are privileged to serve clients across the entire spectrum of law, from complex cross-border transactions to “bet the company” litigation".

McCain's campaign relentlessly refuses to do any research. Sidley & Austin? Must be a store front operation for ACORN. Walter Annenberg, close friend of Ronald Reagan and Nixon's ambassador to the United Kingdom? Never heard of him. Governor Palin's being investigated for ethics violations? Who knew?

Frat boys planning a party think more rigorously than McCain's campaign.

The thing that "amuses" me about these attacks is just how surreal they get once you get into details.

In order to link Michelle Obama to Bernadine Dohrn, they have to point out that they both worked for the same giant law firm. One of the more prestigious law firms in Chicago, in fact. So we're really supposed to believe that this lawyer in good standing with the bar and member of a prestigious law firm is so dangerous a person that Michelle Obama is tainted just because they both worked for the same firm?

And the Ayers story is similar - he's a Professor of Education at the University of Chicago AND he's a horribly dangerous terrorist? Really? Just walking around and the FBI doesn't arrest him?

Maybe it really is just a play to the base strategy - they already believe that professors and lawyers are evil so why not? But it's one of those things that the more it's out there, the crazier it becomes that anyone should be worried about this at all.

I will also add - I have an older right-wing relative who was shocked to discover that Bill Ayers is a white dude. When he finally saw a picture of him he didn't actually believe that this middle-aged dude was the radical terrorist Rush had been building him up to be. Mostly because he was expecting Ayers to be black. Somehow he'd gotten it into his head that the WU were a bunch of Black Muslim radicals. I don't know how - he actually lived through the 60s - I thought the WU were a bit more notorious than that. (He's still voting for McCain, but I wonder how many other folks have this bit of misinformation lodged into their heads.)

Let's play the "guilt by association" game:

1. I heard that John McCain has connections to a drug addict who stole drugs from a non-profit. Is this true?

2. I also heard he has connections to someone who divorced a disabled spouse after carrying on an affair with a much younger woman. Is this true?

3. I heard that McCain has connections to a governor who was found to have violated the public trust and broke state ethics laws. Is this true?

Posted by: Ben on October 11, 2008 at 5:07 PM | PERMALINK

of course, the real point is that Michelle should have refused to work for that bastion of radical, anti-American socialism, Sidley & Austin.

you know, the firm that represents noted liberal causes like, um, well, AT&T. And MasterCard. And AEGON, Fox Television, Johnson & Johnson and *gasp* the National Assn of Realtors. How leftist can you get?

I'm sure Sidley and its hundreds of well-connected, big-donor attorneys will appreciate the McCain campaign's efforts to link them to "domestic terrorism."

Funny, I always though the point of electoral politics was to keep adding up votes until you reach a big enough number to win election. Yet the Republicans seem intent on driving away/defining out various voters (especially the "elites" who used to be the Republican bread-and-butter). I can't wait until Nov 4 to see how that works out for them!

Posted by: zeitgeist on October 11, 2008 at 5:14 PM | PERMALINK

You gotta love McCain. When he's in a glass house, he doesn't just throw stones, he sprays automatic gunfire. You'd think a guy whose wife stole drugs from a charity to feed her habit would want to keep wives off the table. But if you thought that, you would be sane. And John's not sane. I'm not really sure whether he's psychotic, delusional, or masochistic. Hell, maybe he's borderline. But sane, he's not.

"Did the campaign offer any evidence that Michelle Obama and Bernardine Dohrn even knew each other at an enormous firm with hundreds of lawyers? No. But they very possibility that the two knew each other is enough for the unhinged GOP ticket to make a bizarre degrees-of-separation attack."

In Legal Ethics the rules indicate that even this tenuous connection is enough to bar a firm from working for certain clients on certain cases. Even when there is a pre-emptive wall between the "tainted" employee and others (tainted in this case, with confidential information that would be helpful to the client of the firm) it's a fine line.

But legal ethics is not politics. Seriously, who the fuck cares?

The firm has represented both the American Bar Association and the American Medical Association. Think about it --- our nation's lawyers and our nation's doctors are guilty of associating with terrorists!

In addition, President Bush's Deputy National Security Advisor for International Economic Affairs was a partner.

why has noone noticed that in the 80s when michelle and bernidine worked at this firm, she

Jeeze, Zeitgeist... How blind and naive can you be?

Of course, Sidley&Austin is a socialist-terrorist front! They're only representing those companies you mentioned to fool you, while doing their worst to undermine the society under that cover. They're all lawyers after all... That means they're bad on at least two counts: liberal activists every one of them *and* elitists (finished highschool *and college, didn't they?)

Posted by: exlibra on October 11, 2008 at 5:33 PM | PERMALINK

Is there one promise that the McCain campaign has actually kept as it flails its way to defeat? McCain has turned his run for the highest office in the land into an appaling mixture of high dudgeon and low comedy.
"Not as bad as McCain in '08," will enter the lexicon of political commentary.

They're all lawyers after all...

Huh. Guess they'd consider me one of those paradoxical radical leftist elitists then, too!
(I've even worked on cases with attorneys at Sidley, so I am but one more small degree of separation away from Bill Ayers!)

Cool. :)

See, you clearly haven't been able to enter into the batshit crazy mindset yet, or else you'd know that what happened is that first Michelle was pulled into Dohrn's evil web, and then Michelle went out and found a guy who 30 years later would be able to be the first black president and introduced him to Dohrn and Ayers so they could infect him with their horrible ideas.

Don't you see? It's like Obama is the Manchurian Candidate for the Weathermen! Next thing you know, he's going to be issuing barely coherent manifestos and blowing up statues. How will we protect our nation's statues from him?

Look, if dittoheads are prepared to believe that the handful of giant corporations that own and control virtually all the mass media in the USA -- corporations to whom John McCain has promised $1.44 BILLION in corporate tax cuts plus millions more individual tax cuts for their ultra-rich CEOs -- are the "liberal media" with an agenda of promoting "socialism", they will believe anything.

The Troopergate report was just released yesterday.

Based on the finding that Gov. Sarah Palin had violated Alaska's Ethics Act by letting her husband, Todd Palin, use her office to launch a vendetta against her sister's ex-husband, is anyone ready for Todd Palin (if his wife is elected vice-president) to be a heartbeat away from the presidency?

This is my take on what a McCain/Palin presidency would mean.

That Todd Palin, who has numerous connections to far, right-wing militia groups, would have a very high platform from which to push the interests of all these groups if his wife ends up being vice-president (a heartbeat away from the presidency)...just as Sarah Palin herself would have a very high platform, too, from which to push her hardcore, anti-U.S. Constitution religious bigotries and biases, with her witch doctor pastor friend no doubt being called upon by her to exorcise all the "witches" from our nation and drive out the "liberal devil"...which would be the death-knell for our freedom-loving, liberal democracy.

(Remember, Jesus Christ was a LIBERAL).

Some years back I was involved in straightening out a legal matter concerning a family inheritance. My (west coast) side of the family was represented by Preston Gates, while my Chicago cousins used Sidley Austin. I suppose now I can never run for public office after being in the tank with Jack Abramoff’s law firm, but at least I wasn’t palling around with terrorists like my cousins.

Let's remember, my friends, that John McCain spent some five years as a guest of the Viet Cong. Maybe he's the real Manchurian candidate, and is actually a Cong deep-cover agent. I mean, considering how associations matter, and all.

You don't need to go tit-for-tat to answer this one. Get ahold of the Sidley & Austin client list. They're a large firm because they do a lot of work for large corporate clients on major transactions -- they're not a bunch of ambulance chasers.

Posted by: Jassalasca Jape on October 11, 2008 at 7:02 PM | PERMALINK

And also (just to get y'all into an Alaskan mood)...

I'm sure that not only did Michelle collaborate with Dohrn on blowing up all of USA, but that the Ayers/Dohrn children probably went to the same school as Malia and Sasha do. Some 30yrs apart, perhaps, but it doesn't matter; if it's true they did, the intent to indoctrinate them through the air they breathe there is quite evident.

Which, of course, brings us to the question of candidates' children...

Has anyone seen Bristol Palin recently? When is the wedding? She was supposed to have been 5 months pregnant 5-6 weeks ago; if they don't get her to the altar *soon*, it's gonna be the classic case of:
Here comes the bride;
All fat and wide.
See how she waddles from side to side...

Posted by: exlibra on October 11, 2008 at 7:02 PM | PERMALINK

According to Bush Doctrine 3.4, anyone who has ever breathed the same air as a terrorist is a terrorist; and that would include the air within a law firm. Of course, that doctrine was superseded by Bush Doctrine 3.5, which stated that anyone who was under the same sun as a terrorist is a terrorist. But no one ever took that one seriously, and it was quickly replaced by Bush Doctrine 4.0: Freeance Peeance.

Where is the lawsuit from Sidley & Austin for defamation of character. In essence, they are being called terrorists for hiring a known terrorist and member of the Weather Underground with her husband. And the University which hired Bill Ayers is also suject to this same character assassination. To whom have the partners of S&A donated the most in campaign funds?

On another note: have we seen the birth documents on Trig, yet? I understand they have gone missing.

peace,
st john

Posted by: st john on October 11, 2008 at 8:07 PM | PERMALINK

Note also that even John Murtagh's basic accusation against the Weather Underground is highly suspect. Here is Murtagh's little essay on the topic:

http://www.city-journal.org/2008/eon0430jm.html

Note that he presents no direct evidence whatsoever that the Weather Underground was responsible for the bombing of his family home. The police never got so far as even identifying a suspect.

The only circumstantial evidence he presents is that several members of a contingent of the Weather Underground blew themselves up a few weeks later while they were making pipe bombs. However, even this fact is inconclusive at best. According to the police, the house in which they were making those bombs contained enough explosives to level half the block. However, the bombs detonated at the Murtagh residence were gerry-rigged gasoline bombs, not pipe bombs.

Finally, the reason why the Murtagh family was targeted in the first place was that his father, a federal judge, was presiding over the trial of 21 members of the Black Panthers. Unbelievably, John Murtagh presents no evidence whatsoever to rule out the Black Panthers as a much more obvious suspect.

John Murtagh is a fraud (surprise!) who is obviously using his victimhood to get his name in the paper.

A day or two ago Bill Milliken came out and endorsed Obama. Milliken was the Governor of Michigan for 11 years and led the McCain campaigns in the state in 2000 and supported him in the 2007 primary. He can't anymore.

Milliken is a moderate Republican who twice won election easily in a state with a large Democratic bloc. After this announcement, as after previous announcements involving pleas for bi-partisanship and moderation, he will no doubt be assailed as a RINO by the cranks and mountebanks now ruling the state party.

America needs a Republican party, the one that once was led by the likes of Milliken. No doubt the managing partners of Sidley & Austin are more like Milliken than not, and it is about time that they stepped forward and did a Joseph Welch on John McCain, Steve Schmidt, and the witches now reigning in the party of Lincoln.

Michelle was allowed to join the law firm as a favor from Bernardine Dohrn three years after she joined on.

In a parallel universe, Michelle Obama worked there first and, three years later, brought on Bernardine Dohrn as a favor to a close ally and fellow terrorist. (Anachronistically, they dapped on her first day at work.)

How splendid. Either way, they had close ties.

It must be so obvious how evil the Obamas are when you've a gullible drone of the GOP. It must be so very comforting to the soul.

Posted by: toowearyforoutrage on October 12, 2008 at 9:19 AM | PERMALINK

Get with the program, people!

It's so obvious if you would just take off your liberal blinders and see the REAL TRUTH.

Michelle and Bernadine met at the weekly Sidley & Austin Maoist sleeper cell meeting. It's held at TGI Friday's every Thursday. Free chicken wings for anyone wearing Mao flair!

And if it wasn't there, well it could have been at the monthly Sidley & Austen Witches Coven bunko party.

I think it would be irresponsible not to explore these possibilities.

I also wonder why Michelle Obama has been unwilling to talk about her membership in these two groups?
