SECRET SERVICE NOTICES THREATS.... Yesterday was the latest in a series of incidents in which McCain/Palin supporters shouted threats relating to Barack Obama during a campaign rally. A number of you have emailed me, wondering where the Secret Service is in all of this.

Apparently, the threats have not gone unnoticed by the Secret Service, which is reportedly taking a closer look at yesterday's Palin event in Pennsylvania.

The U.S. Secret Service is investigating a threatening remark directed at Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama during a political event in Scranton.

The agency followed up on a report in The Times-Tribune that a member of the crowd shouted, "Kill him!" after one mention of Mr. Obama's name during a rally Tuesday for Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin.

The remark came while congressional candidate Chris Hackett was addressing the crowd at the Riverfront Sports Complex. There is no indication Mr. Hackett or Mrs. Palin, who took the stage a half-hour later, heard the remark. [...]

Times-Tribune employees who covered the rally were interviewed today by the Secret Service.

It's incredible that it's come to this point.

"I knew the mob wouldn't go down without a fight, but this is different. They crossed the line."

I'm reasonably certain that the USSS was on this from the very beginning--remember, Obama has had a USSS detail from early in the primaries. That said, McCain/Palin should still be skewered in the MSM for allowing it to come to this without their addressing it (and, no, McCain's half-hearted responses a few days ago don't cut it) and insisting that it stop. It is incredible that it's come to this. . .

I had thought about going to the Palin rally in Indianapolis Friday and yelling 'kill the n*gg*r!'.

Would like to see what it would take to get Sarah to stop the madness.

Guess I'd better not.

McAce is still bombing those "gooks" from 15,000 feet and relishing it in his warped little mind. Palin? She has no conscience. Opportunist often do not. In her case we are seeing a narcissist to boot. A perfect match those two. Nauseating...

Egging each other on until one of them decides to become a martyr for the loony right wing.

Has the McCain campaign gone too far?!

Tonight if McCain mentions Ayers, Wright or anything similar, Obama should grimly say its a sad comment on his campaign that Secret Service has to investigate threatening hate speech inspired by the tone of their personal appearances.

Sadly, it's more inevitable than incredible. McCain and Palin have been encouraging this behavior without thinking. When McCain saw how far it was going, he backed off, but it may have been too late. Palin appears to be oblivious, fitting in with her behavior in Alaska.

You know, one thing that's come out of this campaign is that the Secret Service does a damn good job. Just keeping Obama alive isn't easy. And they've done it so far. They deserve a tip of the hat.

And thus one of the dangers of False Equivalency becomes even more apparent. When the MSM, or the McCain campaign, tries to paint the violent rage at McCain rallies as the same as the relatively benign emotion at the Obama rallies, this radical sentiment is validated.

They may bitch and moan about having to protect Democrats -- remember all of anonymous Secret Service agents who told nasty stories about Bill and Hillary? -- but they don't seem to let their personal feelings affect the level of protection that they give. It's nice to see that there are still some people with professional pride employed by the Bush administration.

McCain has indirectly and tacitly supported a woman who shot a doctor because he performed abortions. I know he didn't invite her to the ranch for barbeque and donuts with sprinkles, but his deafening silence on the issue of his supporters shouting "kill him" is disgusting.

"They may bitch and moan about having to protect Democrats"

In fairness to the Secret Service, Bill Clinton was (and still is) a nightmare to protect. Going on a jog through DC? That's crazy, but the Secret Service went along with him. And Bill didn't get killed. They surely hate him for how dangerously he behaved (and still does). Bush must have been a big relief for them. He won't get anywhere near anyone making less than a million a year. And those people don't want to kill him, they paid for him after all. Unless they have a put option on his life, of course.

I live in Indianapolis and Palin will be here Friday. Yesterday someone wrote statements comparing Obama to Hitler on the IUPUI campus. Just received an email from the Chancellor about the incident stating that he had already taken the step of contacting the Republican party. It is getting ugly out here.

SadOldVet, I hope you wouldn't go ahead with that nonsense. It would undermine the whole story when it was "brought to light" that an Obama supporter was shouting out all those messages, and would make the a**holes who are saying those type of things feel vindicated.

Your Friday is going to be worse than mine :) Obama's to appear an hour's drive from where I live, on Friday. I'm debating going... Not a crowd person, in general, after my experiences in '68 in a commie country...
