GOP RACISM REACHES NEW DEPTHS OF STUPIDITY.... It hasn't been a good week for local Republican Party affiliates in California. Yesterday, for example, we learned that the Sacramento County Republican Party posted materials calling for Barack Obama to be tortured.

This item, however, from Right Wing Watch, is arguably even more breathtaking.

The latest newsletter by an Inland Republican women's group depicts Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama surrounded by a watermelon, ribs and a bucket of fried chicken, prompting outrage in political circles.

The October newsletter by the Chaffey Community Republican Women, Federated says if Obama is elected his image will appear on food stamps -- instead of dollar bills like other presidents. The statement is followed by an illustration of "Obama Bucks" -- a phony $10 bill featuring Obama's face on a donkey's body, labeled "United States Food Stamps."

The GOP newsletter, which was sent to about 200 members and associates of the group by e-mail and regular mail last week, is drawing harsh criticism from members of the political group, elected leaders, party officials and others as racist.

You don't say.

Asked for an explanation, the Republican group's leader, Diane Fedele, denied sinister motivations. She said she picked food stamps, for example, to mock Obama for saying he "doesn't look like all those other presidents on the dollar bills."

Fedele denied being a racist, and pointed to her previous support of Alan Keyes as evidence of her racial tolerance.

Asked why the image included Obama alongside a watermelon, ribs and a bucket of fried chicken, Fedele said, "It was just food to me."

The mind reels.

It will get worse as the reality of a black president emerges..

AND

I BLAME McCAIN

For not putting out a strong statement--

and worse yet, trivializing the well grounded, historical concern by

defending his supporters
AND then
attacking Obama for not repudiating

Not repudiating what? The truth , the reality of what a civil rights hero sees and fears to be so?

What is there to repudiate?!!

Posted by: iseerussiafromyhouse on October 16, 2008 at 1:53 PM | PERMALINK

Good. Let them do this crap. They may think it's funny or helping McCain. But it only makes Obama look better and better.

This is the modern Republican party since Nixon. This is who they are. This is a "Mission Accomplished" moment for Nixon, Atwater, Rove, Schmidt, the National Review, Rush Limbaugh, Fox News, and a long list of awful people. Heckofa job, wingnuts.

John "Marion" Wayne, Nixon, Reagan - they really breed republicans viciously racist in California.

No wonder Ike was stunned and furious when Earl Warren turned out to be a rational human being.

No Steve, the mind does not reel. The eyes roll.

McCain may roll his in regards to tax cuts for the middle class and shouts of "kill him" at his rallies, but most of us do it when we hear racists like this Diane Fedele pretend like we're as stupid as she obviously is.

As a Californian, I can attest to the stark culatural differences between the coastal urban centers and the rural valleys and mountain regions. Like most states, we have more than our fair share of racist whackos. Fortunately, there are a lot more people living on the coast.

McCain's claim to have repudiated these types of statements from his supporters is a BALDFACED LIE. Only after these criminal statements started receiving intense negative media scrutiny did he make an obviously half-hearted attempt to tone down the rhetoric. Nowhere have I seen the word repudiate, or anything remotely resembling that definition.

Fedele denied being a racist, and pointed to her previous support of Alan Keyes as evidence of her right-wing nutbaggery.

Fixed.

The "IE" (Inland Empire)in SoCAL is alive and kicking with bigotry.

As if anyone needed a reason to stay closer to the water and out of all that smog!

Let's just hope this behavior is the 'last gasp' of a dying party.

Hardly, citizen_pain. When my fellow employees are freely circulating blatantly racist emails using the company's email system (and they've been warned to cease and desist), I think the racist are getting started, as if a black president is justification for overt racism.

You'd think America stepped back in time--or that we never took steps forward! It's best to acknowledge this is real, it's damaging, it's wrong, it's NOT what this nation needs. I'm planning on meeting this bullsh*t head on.

So which is it? Watermelon or arugula?

Maybe this "one person one vote" isn't such a great idea. grrr

Perhaps KFC Corporation should sue this group for copyright infringement for using their corporate logo without permission. That's a violation of federal law.

Posted by: jpeckjr on October 16, 2008 at 2:16 PM | PERMALINK

Can we finally start calling bullshit on people who do this and claim they didn't think it was racist and, really, had no intent to offend anyone.

I find it incredible that someone could grow up in the US and not have an inkling as to how this would be viewed. Which is why I have to believe she's full of shit on this.

Of course, this makes the GOP seem out-of-touch, weak and petty. Obama deciding not to comment on this is perfect. They can't claim he's, "playing the race card" if he doesn't react to this crap.

Posted by: Chris on October 16, 2008 at 2:17 PM | PERMALINK

You go, gang green! About four or five months ago I had to order one of my aunts to quit forwarding me the racist sh*t that she was sending me (and I was mad enough that I unloaded those exact words on her right-wing "Christian" Republican ass). I put up with my elders thinking that this sort of crap was funny for too long, and this election has sent me over the edge.

Posted by: Michigoose on October 16, 2008 at 2:17 PM | PERMALINK

Mmmmmmmm, ribs and chickennnnnnnn.

Posted by: Homer Simpson on October 16, 2008 at 2:20 PM | PERMALINK

The Republicans know the election is lost. I think all of this is being done to damage "President Obama" as much as possible when he takes office.

'Asked why the image included Obama alongside a watermelon, ribs and a bucket of fried chicken, Fedele said, "It was just food to me."'

Of course. Of all the infinite possible combinations of foods, she just happened to pick three that are black stereotypes.

She ALMOST went with canned mushrooms, Froot Loops, and sweetbreads.

The Inland Republican women's group may have stumbled upon a remedy for many of the soon to be hungry Americans. However, food stamps have been replaced by the much more efficient and effective ATM-like debit card, which the Inland Republican women's group will become familiar with in the near future.

Posted by: Brojo on October 16, 2008 at 2:26 PM | PERMALINK

Part of the GOP response to the "waterboard Obama" materials:

"It's disappointing that something like this would show up on the Republican Party Web site," Johnson continued. "Maybe someone hacked into it. That would make me feel better. This is hateful stuff."

Emphasis added. These guys are still trying to suggest that this is not SOP for the modern GOP.

Things like that could "destroy the fabric of society" (or at least put a brown stain on it.)

Posted by: Im John McCain and I approved this message on October 16, 2008 at 2:34 PM | PERMALINK

The fact that it has to take a very competent black man to run against a very incompetent white man before a black man can make it to the white house says it all.

But we'll take it!

Posted by: Helena Montana on October 16, 2008 at 2:40 PM | PERMALINK

I keep wondering when they manage to scare up some Republican person of color to repeat Repug talking points, Where do they find these Uncle Tom MFs who would be willing to associate with a party and people that see nothing wrong with this. I will leave it to some other erudite observer to determine how and which time machine transported that racist trash from the 18th century.

I guess we need some Bush Stamps, in the denomination of $1,000,000,000.00 - redeemable only on Wall Street.

Oh, and here's a nice graphic we can put on the stamp. They need to print a couple thousand right away!

Posted by: Marko on October 16, 2008 at 2:49 PM | PERMALINK

Just curious -- Is this group part of the actual GOP? I know nothing about the Chaffey Community Republican Women, but they sound like right wing loons.

Posted by: DIANA on October 16, 2008 at 2:49 PM | PERMALINK

The last time I checked alot of people love ribs, chicken, and watermelon. Making it a racist insult is kinda ridiculous. Its like saying "All white people eat is ice cream" ha ha ha. Its like the pride themselves on being ignorant.

But, anyway....Let's see McCain try to put this one in "context" (YAWN!) again.

Posted by: John Henry on October 16, 2008 at 2:55 PM | PERMALINK

Ahh, let's hope this is just the dying gasps of the monumental embarrassment that is the GOP. Implosion is an ugly spectacle. The modern GOP - proof positive that our society still has quite a ways to go to true enlightenment. Heck, I'd settle for simply being less juvenile.

Posted by: ckelly on October 16, 2008 at 3:04 PM | PERMALINK

If there is a silver lining to the manner in which the GOP has conducted itself in this campaign, it is that they have outed themselves for the world to see.

What Jillbee said. Help me out here - does he eat ribs and watermelon and chicken, so he's really ghet-O? Or does he eat arugula, so he's really elitist? Or does he eat arugula-wrapped ribs, so he's really ghet-elitist? I'm so confused (but not half as confused as the typical wingnut).

Is it a coincidence that "dexter" refers to the right side in heraldry, and to a serial killer in the TV show? Hmmmmmm????

Posted by: Uncle Jeffy on October 16, 2008 at 3:10 PM | PERMALINK

Both for me, please. And please pass the fried chicken.

Now lets see. May I enter this circle that has ribs, fried chicken and watermelon. I would like cold slaw, mac and cheese and a good pecan pie with this order. I don't give a damn what color you are, I will set at this table and give thanks to the Almighty and talk to you. White boy said that!!

Posted by: EC Sedgwick on October 16, 2008 at 3:31 PM | PERMALINK

Of course. Of all the infinite possible combinations of foods, she just happened to pick three that are black stereotypes.

Actually, she used four racist stereotypes.

She probably thinks she's enlightened because she didn't use a brown paper bag with malt liquor.

It's big in Republican Florida, too
http://www.tampabay.com/news/article856977.ece

A take off of a joke (not a very good one) which I heard last featuring Jesse Jackson.

Although it's never been far below the surface for big-money Democrats, either. Had a neighbor whose father was a Democratic Speaker of the Florida House. He was also on the governing board for the Universities at a later time. My neighbor relayed one of their (his father & cronies) jokes to me:
When does a black man turn into a n****R?
As soon as he leaves the room.

I'm thankful for living in this time, not back then.

I kid you not, I had this really great appetizer at my favorite restaurant recently, it was watermelon glazed ribs on top of an arugula salad. There were thin slices of red and green watermelon underneath it.

It was really, really good.

They should call it the Obama appetizer.

Posted by: CalGal on October 16, 2008 at 3:44 PM | PERMALINK

There has to be a point where this gets covered by the media...right?

Posted by: Karl Rovelution on October 16, 2008 at 3:53 PM | PERMALINK

It's certainly true that not all Republicans are racist. On the other hand, it certainly appears to be true that almost all racists are Republicans.

Posted by: Dan on October 16, 2008 at 3:55 PM | PERMALINK

The fried chicken was deep-fried in arugula-based vegetable oil? So it's elitist AND racist?

Posted by: slappy magoo on October 16, 2008 at 4:01 PM | PERMALINK

EC Sedgwick,

I'll see your mac n' cheese, the watermelon, the arugula, leave the chicken and ribs (I'm a vegetarian), and trade you the pecan pie for some haupia (Hawaiian coconut custard) for dessert. And then, in the immortal words of Donna Brazile, "We will ALL sit and drink some."

Actually the flyer is funny and I think Obama would be the first to chuckle over it, but that doesn't matter, it is damn political suicide to make those kinds of jokes. It would be like making fun of vetrans to mock McCain. Funny for a minute until the blowback starts.

Posted by: Northern Observer on October 16, 2008 at 4:13 PM | PERMALINK

Reading symbols and assigning meaning is always difficult and somewhat open to interpretation.

I'll give Ms. Fedele points for her statement about the watermelon, ribs and chicken used in her little "joke": Food is food.

Now, she needs to give me credit for detecting racism: Racist is Racist.

Unbelievable.

What(?), they didn't have any white wimmin to put beside him?

If you're going to slander someone you ought to at least do it right. These people are shamefully inept. KKKarl Rove ought to haul 'em out at the next RNC convention and spank 'em for embarrassing the long proud heritage of the Republican smear machine.

I know Obama supporters just need to stay cool until after Nov 5th, and let slide these PUTRID RACIST garbage these folks who make Obama Waffles which Lou Dobbs purchased, or the image of Obama with a hang man's noose photos....but after Nov 5th, these maggots better HIDE really really well, cuz they are endangering Obama's life, and dividing our country in a hideous way that should have died in the 1960s. If these bored useless rich sows with pearl chokers hanging around their jowls, would quit spewing their HATE, and go back on Valium and martinis the world would be infinitely better place.

Ms. Fedele,
As a woman who's family left Europe as German Jews, you most of all should be EMBARRASED and ASHAMED of the dehumanizing, hateful crud you promote and spread like a malignancy on AMERICA.
Your next day of atonement will be some kind of BUSY, you card carrying....(word McCain called his blonde pillionaire 2nd wife.)

Posted by: mark on October 16, 2008 at 7:30 PM | PERMALINK
