THURSDAY'S MINI-REPORT.... Today's edition of quick hits:

* After falling nearly 400 points this morning, the Dow finished up over 400 points this afternoon. Not for the faint of heart.

* Keep an eye on this story: "Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner told the Huffington Post on Thursday that she is ready not only to fight the state's current election law battle in front of the Supreme Court, but is also willing to wage a new fight, if necessary, to make sure hundreds of thousands of new voters are not 'forced' onto provisional ballots on election day."

* Early voting began in North Carolina, and the lines are already very long.

* The United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry finds McCain's "Joe the Plumber" talk ridiculous.

* Speaking of which, "Joe the Plumber" isn't a licensed plumber, isn't a political independent, doesn't make more than $250,000, and his name isn't even "Joe."

* Atrios seems to have summarized the story beautifully: "I don't care anything at all about Joe the Plumber. I care about our stupid media who have elevated this registered Republican to represent the everyman undecided voter, even though he isn't even an undecided voter."

* Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) takes the stand.

* A brief Secret Service investigation found no threats made against Obama at Palin's rally in Pennsylvania this week.

* Jack Murtha apologized today for calling western Pennsylvania "a racist area."

* It's odd that PBS is unwilling to air "Torturing Democracy," a documentary examining the Bush administration's detention and interrogation policies, until after the next president is inaugurated.

* There's apparently a new viral, right-wing email chain making the rounds. Be forewarned.

* Factoid of the Day: "Joe the Plumber has now had more press conferences than Sarah Palin."

* Remember Rick Santorum? He's bashing Obama for not wearing a flag pin -- despite the fact that Obama wears one and McCain doesn't.

Anything to add? Consider this an open thread.

On election day, I anticipate VERY LONG LINES.

I hope folks will be patient and that they will extend hours to ensure everyone votes.

Factoid of the Day: "Joe the Plumber has now had more press conferences than Sarah Palin."

I'll bet he was vetted longer too. Notice I didn't say better.

Sweet Baby James is lending a hand for Obama in North Carolina. Five free concerts!

Surprise! Surprise! Joe "The Unlicensed Plumber" is also a wife-beater.

I reject Chuck Dodd's interpretation he just made on "Hardball' now-- that McCain simply looked angry because T.V. is so visual.

McCain IS angry. He interrupted, he was sarcastic, stiff, glib--and he brought up petty issues and had the audacity to attack Obama for not condemning the Lewis comments while defending his campaign's bigotry. Unbelievable.

As someone who lived in western PA for 5 years I can honestly say that there's no reason for an apology. It's a fucking racist area and it's one of the main reasons I moved.

I saw more confederate flags in PA than I did when I lived in Maryland.

Great News about J.T.--"In my mind, I'm going to Carolina..." Lovely song, brings back memories!

Sure hope more will come out in this fashion! :-)

After falling nearly 400 points this morning, the Dow finished up over 400 points this afternoon. Not for the faint of heart

Six of the ten biggest gains ever made in DOW ocurred during the height of the Great Depression. The volatility is what kills the market. Get ready for more 500-1000 point single day swings over the next few months.

Given the attitudes of investors right now they will overreact to eveything.

It's not odd at all about PBS. Have you followed what has happened to PBS and NPR the last 8 years. They've been staffed with right wingers and political appointees.

Okay, we need to stop with this "his name isn't even Joe" stuff. He goes by Joe, so that's his name. Stick to the real stuff.

Apologizing for calling western PA racist is a little like having to apologize for calling the Castro district queer.

Joe The Plumber! What a joke! Another clumsy attack by the Palin-McCain campaign. The local news here reported that Joe Schmoe didnt know that you need a license to be a plumber. nor did the company that hired him. Riiiiight! What a nitwit!

Puhleeze, if you have the time, hit on over to gateway pundit. This asshole is pumping out more blatant lies & doctored photos than you can ever imagine. I'm simply trying to keep him busy deleting my posts while he's still typing. I have had more than one not so thinly veiled threat, which he quickly deletes so as not to get blocked by blogger. Flag the damn thing. He's cooking up all kinds of hate and needs to be stopped.

I'm freaking out at what the republicans are up to. Those vile robocalls, the Secret Service denying press access to a v.p. candidate and voter suppression. This is scaring the hell out of me. We're on our way to becoming a fascist country...no, we will be one under McCain/Palin.

VOTE FRAUD!!! by "Joe the Plumber":

Mr. Wurzelbacher is registered to vote in Lucas County under the name Samuel Joseph Worzelbacher.

“We have his named spelled W-O, instead of W-U,” Linda Howe, executive director of the Lucas County Board of Elections, said in a telephone interview. “Handwriting is sometimes hard to read. He has never corrected it in his registration card.”

The records, she said, showed he voted Republican in the March primary.

PBS’s “Frontline” program has a new episode called "Heat,” which is about global warming and climate change.

Originally scheduled for the day before yesterday, I presume it was pre-empted nationally for the “Frontline” special on the dual biographies of Obama and McCain.

Anyway, a “Frontline” crew was here in Dallas in May for ExxonMobil’s annual shareholder meeting. (The episode is about global warming.)

And, I was outside carrying a sign, protesting ...

And, I was interviewed for about three-four minutes.

So, keep a lookout for me!

Blog post on the protest, with pics, is here.

Nicolle Wallace is defending the air quotes around "Women's Health" to David Gregory--insisting it was very fair and that Obama's record is indeed very extreme and she goes on to assert that most women are against late term abortion (Gregory doesn't challenge this --or the importance of health qualifier for the mother).

Phone calls are now going out leaving messages indicating Obama is a terrorist and yes, it IS endorsed by McCain.

corporate media wants both a horse race and a McCain win.

taxes on those making over 250k? Why that would be David Gregory and every one of his producers.

If freedom is not free why do right wingers bitch and moan about taxes? They'd rather people give their lives than give up a few hundred bucks a year?

Never mind that most of the federal budget is consumed by military spending.

While it's true these times can bring great fluctuations it doesn't mean the people buying & selling have no reasons or that they're stupid.

Right now the market seems to be bouncing around at what appears to be a 'bottom'. If you're selling here it's probably because you are scared witless or have to sell to remain liquid.

If you're buying now it's probably because you were wise to have cash on hand to get in on the biggest fire sale in history.

Which are there more of, buyers or sellers (and in terms of dollars)?

Everyone can be a buyer or seller, given the right circumstances. What we're seeing is some people buying and taking the chance they're maybe getting in on the ground floor. If they're wrong they're going to be crushed, but then so are we all. If they're right then everyone else will turn around later and follow them. In that case the risk takers win the game.

Is there a huge shift of wealth from some people/firms to others, or is the new boss same as the old boss? I'd like to see a financial magazine study that question. The answer would be fascinating.

Words of the day...

Barack:

“For those of you who are feeling giddy or cocky or think this is all set, I just have two words for you: New Hampshire. I’ve been in these positions before when we were favored and the press starts getting carried away and we end up getting spanked. That’s another good lesson that Hillary Clinton taught me, so we want to make sure that we are closing strong, running through the tape.

Believe it.
I promise to give $50 tonight.
To help you motivate in the face of today's evil:

Langston Hughes:

Don't you set down on the steps

'Cause you finds it's kinder hard.

Don't you fall now---

For I'se still goin', honey,

I'se still climbin'.

And life for me ain't been no crystal stair

You Forgot Iraq.

But that's OK. So did Bob Schieffer last night and, apparently, both candidates and approximately 300,000,000 Americans, give or take 147,000 families.

koreyel, thanks for that. My head was about to explode from reading the crazed fringe blogs. Don't venture over often but from my jaunt, I'd say, win or lose, some out there are gearing up for a holy war.

Kinda nervous about this really.

The good news, Mom (@80) in North Carolina proudly voted today for Barack Obama. I asked would she be encouraging her other friends to do so and she said, "You know, Sugar, there's some mean folks in this town so I'm gonna to have to keep my vote private. But I did want to tell you."

This just breaks my heart.

Posted by: MissMudd on October 16, 2008 at 8:25 PM | PERMALINK

"I'm gonna to have to keep my vote private"

My father said the same thing. I think he was talking about people he does business with, but who knows he could be talking about my mother.

Part of the reason I don't think absentee voting is a good idea. Imagine all the people in the country having their votes pressured by spouses.

The secret ballot is important.

Huh. Redstate.com diarist Brad Smith says Obama will win -- "probably by a lot". Much consternation (even charges of treason!) ensue in the comments.

The real crazy comes when the redstaters' plan for electoral victory comes into view: It's Prayer! Yup, if they all pray extra hard for the next 19 days, victory will be theirs.

I can only say: "This god you keep praying to... I do not think he works in the way you think he works."

Joe has become a cement block on the already drowning McCain campaign.

The most interesting aspect of him not being a licensed plumber is that it has allowed him to avoid being in the Union.

I think that would make a good ad for Obama in Ohio, Indiana, and the other working class states.

Just another poor job vetting from McCain. John, if you're going to base your entire debate on a guy, make sure he's not a wife beating, unlicensed, tax-avoiding, scab who is possibly related to your own personal scandalous past.

About that chain email...

Even a giveaway line in his alleged account where Obama endorses an old Coke commercial song as our new national anthem did not deter some from believing it and making it "viral."

...and THAT tells you all you need to know about the gullibility of the right.

Posted by: Bob Loblaw on October 16, 2008 at 9:52 PM | PERMALINK

That'll teach a mere plumber to ask a question of a messiah.

After falling nearly 400 points this morning, the Dow finished up over 400 points this afternoon. Not for the faint of heart.

Get used to it. Several have rightly predicted high volatility in the market for the foreseeable future.

I have to laugh at the pols jumping on each daily change in the market as some "big poignant data point." Some are using it to push their agenda, but most, I fear, are truly ignorant to economics and the market as a whole.

"I screwed up, what can I say?" John McCain has said very few things during his campaign, but that was one, because he said it to Dave Letterman tonight. And he did. I sincerely think that, second only to the Palin pick, the biggest single mistake McCain made was blowing off Letterman, and then being caught on camera interviewing with Katie Couric at the same time.

Unimportant to snub a late-night talk show host? Well, that depends. If the talk show host has an audience in the millions, if that talk show host has an audience from the entire political spectrum, and especially 'middle information voters,' and if snubbing him means getting weeks of scathing ridicule, of the age issue being hammered repeatedly, and the absurdity of his running mate. It's a mistake. A BIG mistake.

But maybe the third biggest was trying to 'make it up' by coming on the show. He figured that would lessen the criticism -- but it didn't, not even for one night.

But what he couldn't have expected was that letterman would really interview him. How many of us have been hoping someone would aks McCain to his face "You mention Ayers, what about G. Gordon Liddy?" or "if you were incapacitated, do you really think the country could contemplate Sarah Palin as President during another 9/11?" (Can you imagine how that last one would make him squirm, duck and weave?)

Well, that's what Letterman did, along with other hard questions during about thirty minutes of time, and McCain had no choice but to sit there and take it. (This was after, btw, one of Letterman's fake, tape edited, "Messages from John McCain" -- this one saying "American needs a change a new direction, that's why I am voting for Barack Obama.")

Now I have been extremely optomistic about Obama's chances in 'red states' but there have been some that I've considered 'toss-ups, leaning McCain' like the Dakotas, Kentucky, Tennessee, Kansas and Nebraska. But it is these people who are Letterman's audience. I won't say that all of them have switched, but I think a few percentage points per state will, by election time, be in Obama's column simply because of Letterman, and their memories of both the weeks of filleting and the interview tonight.

Joe the Plumber?

Gee, I was wondering where Jeff Gannon/Jim Guckert was nowadays.

Well, they're both bald, both spouting the same Republican in.s.anities, both being Republican plants...and with just a little plastic surgery, very little, one could almost mistake Joe the Plumber for being a replica, a twin, a clone of Jeff Gannon/Jim Guckert.
