HYPOCRISY WATCH.... In general, I find the interest in Joe Wurzelbacher -- also known as "Joe the Plumber" -- kind of silly. For that matter, I have even less interest in criticism of the left from far-right blogger Michelle Malkin.

But this Malkin piece, about the "dirty, desperate war against Joe Wurzelbacher," is too rich to pass up.

The left's political plumbers are attacking the messenger, rummaging through his personal life and predictably wielding the race card once again. [...]

Left-wing blogs immediately went to work, blaring headlines like "Not A Real $250k Plumber!" Next, they falsely accused Wurzelbacher of not being registered to vote -- he's registered in Lucas County, Ohio, and voted as a Republican in this year's primary.

Next, they called him a liar for identifying himself as undecided. Only registered Democrats and fake Republican tools used in mainstream media stories and YouTube debates are allowed to use that label, you see.

Next, award-winning liberal blogger Joshua Marshall cast Wurzelbacher as some kind of rabid freak for calling Social Security a "joke" -- as if no working-class Americans could believe that the federal government's entitlement programs were a rip-off unless they were bought and paid for by the McCain campaign.

Oh, where to begin. First, Josh's post highlighted a clip from Wurzelbacher's own press conference, in which he presented his conservative worldview. If someone holds a press conference, and a journalist highlights a clip from the event, it's hardly an "attack."

Second, Wurzelbacher, who said he was anxious to get his "message" out, was telling anyone who would listen that Obama's tax policies might adversely affect him personally. But he had his facts wrong. Given the McCain campaign's promotion of "Joe," and the fact that he was saying things that weren't true, a lot of writers, including me, set the record straight. This also falls far short of an "attack."

But perhaps most importantly, Malkin is outraged that "the left" is "rummaging through his personal life." What an interesting complaint.

About a year ago, in the midst of the debate over the State Children's Health Insurance Program (S-CHIP), Democrats invited a 12-year-old boy, Graeme Frost, to deliver the party's radio address. The point, obviously, was to humanize the policy debate -- instead of just another politician reading talking points, here was a kid who was able to get the medical care he needed after a serious car accident caused severe brain trauma, paralyzed one of his vocal chords, and put him in a coma.

Michelle Malkin decided it was appropriate to "rummage" through the Frost family's "personal life" -- which included visiting their home, stopping by the boy's father's workplace, and publishing right-wing rumors about the family that didn't withstand scrutiny. At the time, Malkin said she was simply "subjecting political anecdotes to scrutiny," which she saw as fully appropriate.

Matt Corley added, "The difference between what the media is doing now with Wurzelbacher and what Malkin and the right wing did to the Frosts is clear. While the media is reporting the facts as they find them, Malkin and her allies distorted the facts with innuendo and refused to believe the Frosts were 'struggling' even after family friends told them so."

Michelle Malkin is filled with self-loathing that she projects on everyone else. She has nothing of value to say and nothing she says surprises me. Happily, I don't bother to read her blog.

cast Wurzelbacher as some kind of rabid freak for calling Social Security a "joke"

No, he's a rabid freak for saying...
1) social security is a joke
2) he hates our progressive tax system
3) we should close our borders
4) "I don't care about WMDs, we took it to 'em"
5) Not paying taxes to the point of having a lien applied.

He's about as "undecided" as Michelle Malkin.
Oh, and Malkin's a piece of shit.

And Al shows up with big time projection. Thanks for sharing the problem that's really on your mind.

Al, if I have a plugged toilet I will call a real plumber, with a license, not a fake who calls himself one as political image fluff.

Can anyone explain, beyond their huge sense of entitlement, why the repubs believe that they are above scrutiny? Why it's ok for them to lie, but it's not ok for people to publish the truth? Why it's ok for Malkin to go full bore to discredit a child and his family, but not ok for people to find out about the "real" Joe the Plumber? They aren't digging in his garbage. Most of the published information is public record.

If Joe wasn't up for some level of scrutiny, he probably wouldn't have agreed to so many on-camera interviews.

glad to see even north dakotans are starting to see the bright progressive, liberal, do-it-yourself plumbers' light of the coming obama epoch.

Posted by: neill on October 17, 2008 at 4:01 PM | PERMALINK

Lets not also forget that John McCain is the one who cast the spot light onto Mr. Plumber. If McCain wouldn't have used some moronic anecdote to belabor his misguided (and wrong) tax-policy talking points, this really wouldn't be an issue now would it?

republicans collectively suffer from Attention-Deficit Disorder liberally larded with slavish devotion (Sarah Palin could call over one of those salt-of-the-earthers, poke out his eye with a piece of wire, and then 10 minutes later call him back and poke out the other one), but none more so than Malkin. By definition, everything Democrats do is wrong and possibly evil, and everything Republicans do is right and normal. Don't expect to win over any of her supporters with reason.

It's worse than that. The right's effort is intended not only to discredit anyone whose case is advanced by the left; it's also intended to be so intimidating that others will not reveal their own stories. Malkin and her ilk are insidious.

So ... let's see if I understand this about Joe the Plumber Sam the Tax Cheat:

1. A guy confronts Obama at a rally with a question.

2. McCain brings the question during the debate, mentioning the guy's name ... 21 times in 90 minutes.

3. The media not Obamas campaign, but the media descend on Sams house.

4. Sam willingly, happily, and excitedly grants more interview requests in 6 hours than Palin has in 6 weeks.

5. The media, with a huge assist from bloggers, reveals the question he asked at the rally and the claims about Sam the Tax Cheat that were later made by McCain are all 100 percent, undeniable, provable, demonstrable lies.

6. The right wing decides the revelation of truth = an attempt to destroy the guy, and that the media doing its job is so much, much worse than a bunch of wingnut bloggers stalking a 12 year old and trespassing to see what kind of countertops his parents have in their kitchen.

I don't know what's more comical/pathetic: The total lack of self awareness possessed by Malkin and her ilk, or the right's consistent and unrelenting battle against reality.

I don't think quarter of a million dollar plumbers do toilets.

Malkin is outraged

You don't say...

that "the left" is "rummaging through his personal life."

The utterly valid hypocrisy point aside, the bigger issue is that the Frost stalking was a desperate, and unsuccessful, attempt to show that the Frosts were somehow not what they claimed to be, whereas in Wurzelbacher's case, he is not what he claimed, or was claimed, to be.

There is a great book about language in fascist Germany. The undermining of language and objective truth by the right for the past 20 years will be studied by future historians for a long time.

If it wasn't a reflection of past societies and nations that were morally compromised and where the population was asked to look the other way so that horrendous crimes could be committed int their name then I would be impressed by the right's willingness to fully embrace a post modern world view where there is no objective truth there is only the lie of the day.

Wurzelfucker's real question was "How much of my GOP commission is gonna be taxed?"

Posted by: ckelly on October 17, 2008 at 4:12 PM | PERMALINK

Damn. And here I thought Malkin had dropped off the radar permanently after she was caught stalking and smearing the Frost family over a radio address she didn't like...slinking away, tail between the legs, losing her pundit slot on FNC...

Shoulda figured that Malkin would surface again. Even Joe the Wanna-be Plumber could tell you that shit floats.

An interesting twist on this according to the LA Times (10/17/08 p A13):
"Wurzelbacher also divulged that the McCain campaign had contacted him severaL days before the debate and asked him to appear at the Toledo rally. A campaign aide, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that Wurzelbacher had been invited."

Hmmmmmmm.....So, the McC campain planned this and planted him ahead of the debate -- so they could get good mileage and free advertizing for their/his thoughts (a several inches devoted to this in the Times). Another distraction from McC's failed policy ideas. Of course it's interesting to wonder Just how the McC campaign happened to pick Mr W to contact for this assignment? What were their arrangements exactly? (what did he think was in it for him?) Was he really all that surprised to hear his name in the debate or have the media descend?

All in all, it's the McC campaign AGAIN manipulating the public and the media, misrepresenting the facts, and trying to distract people from the real issues. As they say when buying horses: 'Pretty is as pretty does.' McCain's actions and lies are not 'pretty' -- and they reveal that, all his protestations to the contrary, he really would be only a slight variation on the Bush administration -- something the country and the world cannot afford!

Steve: "In general, I find the interest in Joe Wurzelbacher -- also known as 'Joe the Plumber' -- kind of silly."

On the contrary - Democrats should be celebrating this unlicensed tax scofflaw as the perfect metaphor for GOP economic and consumer protection policies, all of which can be summed up in two Latin words: Caveat Emptor.

Bu-bu-but, Graeme Frost is a permanently disabled child. Sammy Wurlzebacher is a big strong man!

When the media looks into S.W.'s personal life it takes courage and the fRighties hate that!

Honestly, does anyone really care what Malkin has to say? I mean, really, she's proven on countless occasions that she's an imbecile. Do we give her an audience simply because she's a conservative imbecile?

Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher: What kind of name is that? He is registered as Worzelbacher, an admitted misspelling by the local registrar. How is he allowed to vote with a "fake" name? Did ACORN register him? Is this voter fraud? If a Democrat tried to vote using a "false" name, would s/he be allowed to vote? All the furor about his plumber's license and tax liens misses the fundamental systemic error of voter registration. Tens of thousands of legitimate voters were purged from the FL voter roles under Gov. Jeb Bush(R) in 2000 (see: www.gregpalast.com) simply because their names were "similar" to some named former convicted felon. How do people like G. Gordon Liddy, a convicted felon who served time, get to vote? Is it because the voting rules in this country are not applied equally to all citizens? Where is McCain on the "reform" of the election rules? Oh, I forgot: he is in favor of state's rights, so it is up to the states to decide who gets to vote.

Enough of this rant. I tend to ramble because I don't want to take the time to explain all that is in my head. I want people to think past the sound bites and talking points, and unwrap the deeper implications of what people say and do.

I thought (and blogged) about Graeme Frost about a month back, when the wingnuts were talking about how Sarah Palin should be exempt not only from the normal oppo research that any politician sees, but also from the unrestrained attack journalism of US Magazine.

It struck me as rather odd that they held an eleven year old boy, in his only media appearance, to a much higher standard than the one they applied to their 44 year old veep candidate and sitting governor of Alaska.

The plumber's union was the first to endorse Obama. And unlike Joe the Unlicensed, these guys are actually fully licensed and bonded.

Michelle Malkin is lucky she's made her own universe to live in because if she'd ever change her mind on a topic she is so vehemently involved with, she'd have to hate herself. Even so, she does a good job of hating herself anyway. Just look at the attributes she aspires to have - they are unattainable in her current state! -Kevo

I'm a regular reader of this blog and Malkin's as well! I'm certainly a liberal voter but reading the threads over there gives me a lot of insight into the minds of the nutjob GOP voters.

I am thrilled to read this good dissection of her column. To me she represents all that is wrong with modern conservatism: blind ignorance of reality, bigotry wrapped in intellectualism and blatant intolerance.

It's incredulous to see how unapologetic her readers are. I am very fearful of the level of vitriol Obama will face when he wins this thing. The saddest aspect to an Obama victory will be the huge uptick in ratings for Limbaugh, Coulter and Malkin. She should be laughed out of polite company.
