ACORN FACES VIOLENCE, THREATS.... Just think, a few weeks ago, ACORN was just a non-profit organization that helped register low-income Americans to vote.
That was before McCain/Palin needed a "base mobilization strategy." Now, agitated right-wing activists have been led to believe, thanks to Republican rhetoric and Fox News, that this non-profit organization is threatening the "fabric of democracy."
The line between the confused, uninformed, and enraged Republican base and an angry mob has been blurred even further.
An ACORN community organizer received a death threat and the liberal activist group's Boston and Seattle offices were vandalized Thursday, reflecting mounting tensions over its role in registering 1.3 million mostly poor and minority Americans to vote next month.
Attorneys for the Association of Community Organizers for Reform Now were notifying the FBI and the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division of the incidents, said Brian Kettenring, a Florida-based spokesman for the group.
Republicans, including presidential candidate John McCain, have verbally attacked the group repeatedly in recent days, alleging a widespread vote-fraud scheme, although they've provided little proof. It was disclosed Thursday that the FBI is examining whether thousands of fraudulent voter-registration applications submitted by some ACORN workers were part of a systematic effort or isolated incidents.
Kettenring said that a senior ACORN staffer in Cleveland, after appearing on television this week, got an e-mail that said she "is going to have her life ended."
A female staffer in Providence, R.I., got a threatening call from someone who said words to the effect of "We know you get off work at 9," then uttered racial epithets, he said. [...]
The incidents came the day after McCain charged in the final presidential debate that ACORN's voter-registration drive "may be perpetrating one of the greatest frauds in voter history" and may be "destroying the fabric of democracy."
Did McCain, Palin, and other Republicans call on their activists to commit acts of violence and make racial attacks? Of course not. But when someone in McCain's position starts accusing a non-profit organization of literally threatening democracy, and when his campaign has done little but rely on hate, fear, and ignorance to get ahead, these results aren't too terribly surprising.

These are just exactly the kinds of things the Civil Rights Division would have investigated before The Evil Lord stacked the decks at Justice.
The Voting Section would have investigated the Republicans' attempts to keep the poor from voting, and the Criminal Section would have investigated the vandalism and threats.
Now that we've fallen down the rabbit hole, the Civil "Rights" Division will investigate ACORN and not those fascists trying to stop the poor from voting.
God will have a special place in Hell for Republicans.

And Hitler never once ordered a single jew killed.
They're responsible. Especially by their continued behavior knowing what type of tension its enflaming, they are responsible.

We can only hope that the Seattle attacks can be linked directly to Rossi supporters. Then it's a two-fer!

What a mess. This is a sad result, I don't think anyone wanted this. OTOH, this does fall squarely on the McCain/Palin campaign and the MSM that parrots their words.

Interesting. Your previous post talks about reality-based people being caught flat-footed by the ACORN story, but now it looks like the Palinbots themselves might be doing more to discredit the story than Obama ever could. Just guessing here, but it seems to me that the spectacle of angry mobs attacking non-profits might capture sane people's imaginations more than all these rather nebulous fraud charges.
Maybe they could have used this story to make Obama look kind of shady if they played it right, but now it feeds right back into the whole story line about McCain's campaign growing bitter and desperate.

So, is this getting any play other than liberal blogs? I sure hope I see this story in my paper tomorrow.

Sad. Just sad. Rumor and innuendo...how long untill the McCain campaign gets blood on their hands from fanning the flames? My friends, the time has come to stand up to ignorance and fear and hatred.

People are being terrorized because the media is either too stupid or too afraid to call bullshit on McCain's "vote fraud" hyperbole.
I guess it's time for another blogger ethics panel.

Just last night at the Alfred Smith dinner, McCain said, "There was a time when the mere invitation of an African American citizen to dine at the White House was taken as an outrage and an insult in many quarters. Today is a world away from the cruel and prideful bigotry of that time. And food riddance."
He even looked like he was going to break down between "cruel" and "prideful". Maybe I have become too cynical, but at that moment, I was thinking about Obama saying earlier in the day that we must not get too cocky, reminding us of New Hampshire. Is McCain so phony he would fake a tear? I honestly don't know, but I'm well beyond giving him the benefit of the doubt.

It's stuff like this that makes it so hard to choose between a slick, socialist version of Sammy Davis, Jr., and a genuin war hero.
Still on the fence.

In their eyes, ACORN is a threat to the very fabric of democracy - their version of democracy where only white people of the right persuasion should be allowed to register to vote, and then actually be allowed to cast a ballot.

Someone needs to tie all the recent stories and accusations to McCarthiasm, because that's precisely what's happening--
Anti-American accusations are being heralded by a Republican Spokesperson right now by Michele Bachmann from Minnesota--who is stirring up the pot with Chris Mathews..."It's very troubling" she states and then good for Chris for asking for follow-ups--Go Chris!!
**********************************************
And indeed--OMG!!
She is urging a call that we scrutinize everyone in the Congress of EVERYONE to see who is "Anti-American"!! Is that what she just said????

What are the odds that BOTH the Boston and Seattle offices of ACORN were vandalized on the same day? Isn't something like that sufficient evidence to open an FBI investigation into possibly coordinated intimidation campaigns?

ACORN is also rigging all the polls to make it look like Obama's ahead; it's called poll fraud.

Samuel Joseph WOrzelbacher was allowed to vote, even though that was not his "legal" name, WUrzelbacher. I asked this on the other thread. Why is noone questioning how he could vote under a "false" name? Only if he is registered (R). Sammy Davis Jr. he is not.

Did Palen/McCain tell anyone to go kill ACORN members? Of course not. They do not have to. They just have to recall King Henry angry at Thomas Beckett. "Who will rid me of this meddlesome priest?" Bingo. Incitement is not protected by the First Amendment. McCain is skirting the line and Palin and the RNC have crossed it. It's pathetic.

There is no doubt that, by their own words and actions, the GOP team of John McCain and Sarah Palin have sought to incite an insurrection against citizens of the United States, and that their cowardly noise machine has given aid and comfort to that effort.
Whether or not there occurs any form of retaliation against those responsible is not the issue here; rather, it is that by initiating an insurrection, it riska affording the current administration the Constitutional right to, at the very least, suspend Habeas---and at the worst, impose martial law.
Thus, the GOP becomes both the action and the reaction that suggests a possible termination of the electoral process in the United States. If that should come to pass, however, it is of the utmost importance for the GOP and its allies to know this, and know this well: The war that comes from this shall be a war that they will lose---and their defeat will be both total and eternal.

Where is the mainstream media in all this? Why are they not detailing what ACORN is really all about? This is what I find most disturbing.
Posted by: Neeta on October 17, 2008 at 5:50 PM | PERMALINK
One question:
Why is ACORN always referred to as a "liberal activist" group?
By my understanding they go out to get everyone registered, regardless of political affiliation (if any). Talk about framing the message!

The line between the confused, uninformed, and enraged Republican base and an angry mob has been blurred even further.
Steve, it isn't that the line has been blurred so much as it is the fact that anyone with even a shred of intelligence is abandoning the McGimmic-of-the-week campaign. All that is left is the die-hard rabble.

"...Did McCain, Palin, and other Republicans call on their activists to commit acts of violence...?"
YES, THEY DID. That is how incitement works. It is always deniable -- the mark of cowardice.
Incitement is the gravest crime that a free society can confront. A society that permits it demonstrates a "depraved indifference", in the legal term of art, to its own survival and the well-being of its citizens. It must be punished wherever it arises, swiftly, publicly, and disproportionately.

I agree on all the vote/registration fraud stuff. But I do wish ACORN would stop using paid canvassers.

This is exactly what John Lewis was talking about when he referenced the Wallace campaign, that the rehtoric used plants the seeds of hatred and violence.
Just like Palin saying that only at here rallys are their pro-American Americans, or the Repub Congressional rep who wants to re-establish an un-American investigatory committee.
These people tarnish our electoral soul.

And why should ACORN not pay its canvassers? Are the pollsters paid? Are some of the campaign workers paid? What happened to capitalism? Because some wackjob gets hired by ACORN and misbehaves, the whole organization is suspect? If this is true, the entire Republican party is suspect. And, perhaps, even the Democratic party. I agree with several of the posters here that the McCain/Palin organization(sic) is inciting to violence and turning its back on accepting responsibility for the actions of its followers. A bi-coastal incursion into ACORN offices is not a coincidence and was not committed by vandals who did not know what they were doing.
It is probably too late for McCain and Palin to reverse any of the consequences of their false allegations against Obama; they are probably not going to, anyway. I also suspect that any law enforcement agencies with jurisdiction in these matters is already co-opted by the DOJ, FBI, local police forces, etc. So, it will be up to us to paralyze the machinery of commerce to the extent that we can interrupt our ingrained cosumer habits, and shut down the the flow of money to the corporations that enable the lies and disinformation about who is running this country and the global power brokers with whom they are intangled. Though it may seem that 'we' are not a united front, when our common interests of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness are being threatened, we can set aside petty differences and take a stand for freedom and cooperation.
I am committed to Oneness through Justice and Transformation

Must be tough, if your a Repocon civilian, to make a decision on just who to hate and an attack on any given day.
Or are they just more Tom Delay type Brown Shirts, who will hate and attack whoever they are told to hate and attack.
