'UNSUPPORTED BY THE FACTS'.... For all the awful coverage of the Republicans' nonsensical "voter fraud" hysteria -- CNN, I'm looking in your direction -- it's probably worth praising major news outlets that get it right. ABC News' report was actually pretty good at moving beyond reporting what the McCain campaign puts in misleading press releases.

Charges of potential vote fraud volleyed by Republicans, including Sen. John McCain himself, are out of proportion to reality, according to election experts.... McCain's voter fraud worries -- about Acorn or anyone else -- are unsupported by the facts, said experts on election fraud, who recall similar concerns being raised in several previous elections, despite a near-total absence of cases.

"There's no evidence that any of these invalid registrations lead to any invalid votes," said David Becker, project director of the "Make Voting Work" initiative for the Pew Charitable Trusts.

Becker should know: he was a lawyer for the Bush administration until 2005, in the Justice Department's voting rights section, which was part of the administration's aggressive anti-vote-fraud effort.

"The Justice Department really made prosecution of voter fraud of this sort a big priority in the first half of this decade, and they really didn't come up with anything," he said.

"We're chasing these ghosts of voter fraud, like chickens without a head," said Lorraine Minnite, a political science professor at Barnard College in New York who has researched voter fraud and fraud claims for most of the past decade. "I think it's completely overblown, I think it's meant to be a distraction."

"This stuff does not threaten the outcome of the election," said Minnite. "How many illegal ballots have been cast by people who are fraudulently registered to vote? By my count, it's zero. I just don't know of any, I've been looking for years for this stuff."

The report added, "Despite the experts' opinions, a McCain-Palin campaign spokesman reiterated that their concern was real." But it nevertheless went on to point to assessments from a Republican governor, non-partisan academics, and a prosecutor, all of which helped to highlight how embarrassingly wrong the campaign is.

The ABC News report didn't come right out and plainly say that the McCain-Palin campaign is lying, but it came pretty close.

Absolutely right. Good on them for getting it right. Now if only there were away to get all the voters to know it.

Meanwhile CNN and other 'news' organizations continue the lies .. continue with the propaganda .. gee wonder what their motives are ?

Posted by: stormskies on October 18, 2008 at 12:55 PM | PERMALINK

If CNN wants to get their facts wrong, that's fine, I just won't watch them. If I were president, I wouldn't give them any interviews or invite them to press conferences, either -- if they can't keep their facts straight, why treat them as news professionals?

Just to be clear, the McCain/Palin campaign claims that they are concerned about something real, though they have no proof, and established researchers who have looked have found no proof.

If this were something other than voter fraud, it would be easier to see that this is just insane.

What if McCain has claimed in the debate that Leprechans were threatening the fabric of democracy, and the campaign was accusing the Obama campaign of somehow hiding its relationship to the Leprechans?

Substitute Mole Men from the Center of Earth, the Loch Ness monster, or heck, even the tabloid star Bat Boy for ACORN, and the lunacy of this whole 'vote fraud' nonsense is clear.

All this to distract you from their own sinister group, Young Political Majors who have been accused out here (SoCal) of conning Democrats into signing petitions, when in fact, they're unknowingly changing affiliations from D to R.

I'm sure all the media outlets are preparing big reports on voter roll purges. Right? Right?

can't blame loser boy and silly sarah for trying to use acorn as an issue. desperate times call for desperate measures, and when you're so far behind, any straw looks like a solid limb to pull you up.

Your wrong, every time someone votes Republican, thats voter fraud.

Zero instances of voter fraud? I know of one and so do the officals in the state of Florida. The culprit was one Ann Coulter. The total lack of interest in prosecuting this case is exhibit A that the Rethugs have absolutely no interest whatsoever in voter fraud. Only losing power.

Registration fraud coupled to vote fraud does exist, but it's NOT the kind of fraud that the McCain campaign is talking up and it's definitely not associated with ACORN!!! I've recently been involved in work on uncovering demonstrable registration fraud, but in most instances it is very difficult to actually prove and even more difficult to tie to actual vote fraud and election fraud.

I guess if Obama wins, we'll be sure to hear cries of vote fraud from Fox News, the same people who told us to "get over it" when it was proved the GOP stole the election in 2000.

The Republican Party's concern is real - just like the reality of a child's concern about monsters under the bed. The child really is concerned about those monsters, it's just that those fears are baseless.

Here, the Republicans have been telling each other so many stories about hordes of illegal immigrants being ferried across the border in UN helicopters to vote against them that they've internalized their propaganda as truth. They don't care whether there's any factual basis to their fears, and think anyone presenting evidence countering their fears is part of a vast conspiracy to cover up what they know to be the truth.

Their minds are made up - and they refuse to let themselves be swayed by weak, liberal ideas like facts, or reality

Wait for the wingnuts to bring up Sanchez vs. Dornan in California, even though 14 months of investigation and $1.2 million of taxpayer money couldn't convince the Republican-controlled US House of Representatives that any significant fraud had occurred. It's one of their favorite hobbyhorses.

Posted by: Mnemosyne on October 18, 2008 at 2:36 PM | PERMALINK

Of course the Republican concern is "real"; that's why they make the big bucks.

"Connected to any fucking basis in reality whatsoever," that's another matter.

Bill Moyers had a segment on PBS last night about voter suppression (including the accusations against ACORN) and election fraud. Moyers's guest was Mark Crispin Miller, who wrote a book called Loser Take All: Election Fraud and the Subversion of Democracy 2000-2008.

Here's the transcript: http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/10172008/transcript3.html

And here's a sneak preview:

MARK CRISPIN MILLER: [...] The point I'm making to you here, Bill - and this is the most important thing I'm going to say to you tonight - is that this [the ACORN controversy] is a pretext being used by a party, okay, that is itself committing election fraud and vote suppression on an enormous scale. In other words, we have a party that is itself engaged in disenfranchising, actively disenfranchising millions of Americans. It is itself complaining about a group that is supposedly planning to do the same thing but that isn't doing that at all.

The Rs are just trying to muddy the waters because they have been involved in throwing the past two presidential elections by suppressing Democratic votes. Which actually makes a difference, unlike voter or registration fraud.
Here's how:
-Purged voter rolls
-Notices in Democratic areas (usually poor) saying that Democrats should vote on Wednesday rather than Tuesday to make things easier.
-Notices or robocalls that say anyone with a traffic ticket, owing child support, etc. will be arrested if they show up to vote.
-Polling places in democratic areas moved without notice.
-Police or other security/enforcement stationed outside Democratic precincts (intimidation).
-Not enough voting machines sent to Democratic precincts by Republican officials causing long lines and hours of waiting*. Or broken machines. Or not enough ballots. Or confusing ballots. Or not providing help to non-English speakers.
-Challenging Democratic voters at the polls. Other intimidation at or near the polls. Making people fill out provisional ballots, which are usually thrown out.
-On top of that: machine tampering, electronic machines that flip votes, machines that have no paper trails, etc.

The Rs will do anything to suppress Democratic voters because that's the only way the Republicans can win. Yelling about ACORN is just the beginning for them.

People, you should petition your states to move to mail in ballots like we have in Oregon. No lines, no intimidation, a paper trail.

*The story that really burned me was about a woman in 2004 who had to wait in line for hours to vote. When she got home she found her husband had died of a heart attack. Had she gotten home sooner, he might have been saved. Also there are tons of stories of older folks who are unable to stand in line for hours and have to leave before voting. Really, we need to get all states voting by mail on a paper ballot. I'm going to be observing the processing of ballots at our county clerk's office this year for the first time. Should be interesting.

200,000 incorrect voter registration forms? Ever heard of the term denial of service.

Posted by: John Hansen on October 18, 2008 at 3:19 PM | PERMALINK

Trying to steal an election by registering invalid voters is like trying to make a fortune counterfeiting pennies.

Think about it: It's a 3 step deal.

1. fill out the registration form with fake information.
2. Write down and save all the incorrect information.
3. recruit a voter unknown to local election officials to use that information to vote.
Result: one extra vote.

It's a lot easier to find an unregistered voter and register them.

Amen, Hannah! I've been saying for years that the whole country should move to mail-in voting like Oregon (and I'm not from Oregon, by the way). Virtually every tactic used by the Republicans to steal votes would be thwarted. There are countless advantages to using Oregon's system. When will our Dems wake up and throw out the whole polling place idea? I think it's a travesty that the Dems in Congress haven't fixed this broken system in the last two years. I'm desperately worried that the Repub's efforts this year will at the very least keep some Dem congress members from getting elected, perhaps even preventing a 60-seat majority in the senate from becoming a reality, if not stealing the White House from Obama.

How rampant is voter fraud?
From Moyers last night:
MARK CRISPIN MILLER: Voter fraud would be if somebody showed up to vote and said, "Hi, I'm Mickey Mouse. May I vote now?" That's not going on.
BILL MOYERS: And does that happen very often?
MARK CRISPIN MILLER: It never happens. Let's just talk statistically about this, okay? As of 2007 the Department of Justice had prosecuted - are you ready for this? This number? 120 cases of voter fraud.
BILL MOYERS: Over what period?
MARK CRISPIN MILLER: Over, well, this is, like four years. Okay? 120 cases. And there were 82 convictions.

Here everybody is screaming about ACORN, but in the meantime, the shenanigans of the GOP go unreported: They actually are re-registering Democrats as Rethugs!

Voter Fraud from the Rpublicans is directed by Karl Rove. the Republicans practicve voter fraud and try to place the accountability on others. In this race it is one of the few cards left to paly to divert Americans attention from the economy etc.

Posted by: mjohnston on October 18, 2008 at 4:05 PM | PERMALINK

The Repugs want everyone to focus on this bogus fraud issue while they shred Obama mail-in ballots locally. This done by people acting on their own.

Posted by: slanted tom on October 18, 2008 at 8:45 PM | PERMALINK

Its about de-legitimizing the winner. The GOP never admit to loosing on its ideas. Its always because the candidate was bad, or the other guy cheated with fraudulent votes from minority x (In the past its been African Americans, Hispanics and Native Americans). When a Democrat is a victim of voter fraud it always for the good of the country lets move on. If its a Republican, then its every vote must be counted and this injustice cannot stand. Been seeing it for years.
