That's Very Reassuring ...

From the NYT:

"President Bush and European leaders, who have been tussling over whether to revamp the regulatory framework for global finance, agreed Saturday night to take steps toward a series of international meetings to address the economic crisis, the White House said.

After a private dinner at Camp David, Mr. Bush, President Nicolas Sarkozy of France and the president of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, issued a joint statement saying they agreed to "reach out to other world leaders" to propose an international summit meeting to be held soon after the United States presidential election, with the possibility of more gatherings after that."

Steps towards a series of meetings! Just the thing to put the markets to rights!

With any luck, they'll move on to considering the possibility of future discussions to explore the option of appointing a blue-ribbon commission to propose possible joint statements and recommendations. And then we'll really have progress!

Is it just a coincidence that they want to start the talks AFTER Bush leaves office?

The Republicans have grown so accustomed to hyping things into Existential Threats and then "protecting" us from them that they have no idea what to do when a real crisis occurs (viz, Katrina).
They are fully able to tilt at windmills, real giants: not so much.

10% of the $700B bailout money will go to the WA banker's salaries and bonuses. Contact your reps in Washington, and tell them about this. As usual, it takes an overseas publication to point this out.

"Mr. Bush’s offer to hold a summit meeting in the United States appeared to be an effort by the administration to wrest control of the proceedings from Mr. Sarkozy."

Wow, so now Bush gets to wreck the G8 attempt to rescue the world economic collapse that he largely caused!

Does Bush think he can can continue to bail out the US economy without G8 help?

Is Bush drinking again?

Hilz, in case you didn’t get the memo, Bush is passing the buck to the next administration on any reform.

Posted by: SocraticGadfly on October 19, 2008 at 2:49 AM | PERMALINK

why the continue to let Bush out of the house? every time he opens his mouth things only appear worse. he is helping to create a crisis of confidence by getting involved. its like he is cursed so that everything he touches turns to shit.

Perhaps there'll be a commission...a Blue-Ribbon Commission!

I don't know about anyone else, but I am tired of hearing about markets. I am tired of hearing about all this bullshit when there is nothing, NOTHING for any single person. Banks, big business all get my fucking money, but the schmoe next door loses his house, I lose value in mine, I have to worry about someone squatting or destroying property and these fuckers on Wall Street get bailed out and party in the Hamptons on my fucking money.

Fuck the markets.

So he's initiated financial summit-related meeting activities.

What if you all stopped paying on your credit card debt? Stopped paying your mortgages? Stopped paying your taxes? Stopped shopping at the mall? You do have the power to stop this "baillout", if you just stop paying into the system. Find out where these bailed out bankers live and harrass them. Most of them do live in the U.S. and they have to eat, go out from their self-imposed prisons. Just stop them in their tracks. Gosh, I think I am calling for revolution! Well, that won't happen. We'd rather live in tents and play the victim.

Why no stories or pictures of crowds and rallies for Obamma- with 100,000 in STL and 75,000 in KC- visible Sunday morning on front pages of Google News or on any of the major news wires??? The MSM is obssessed with making this a horse race, and they are going in the tank for the underdog, whatever it takes, because they care about the story of a close election, which means higher viewership, than simply reporting that a majority of Americans hate the Republicans!

A friend of mine just told me that in Lompoc, CA, home of vandenberg air force base and ballistic missile testing site, their cable carrier does not allow subscribers to subscribe to MSNBC, home of Keith and Rachel. He has called and asked them to carry it, but they say there is not a market for this channel. Welcome to the Faschist States of Amerika.

st john @ 6:23,

What if you all stopped paying on your credit card debt?
It would put them to the test
If the farmer took a rest,
Then they'd know that it's
The farmer feeds them all.

General strike didn't work out too well for the Grangers. Free-riding, transaction costs and all that.

@ Jim
My Friend , don't you know them's 100,000 is Mid - West subversive socialist anti Amerikuns. What with palin' around with that terrist feller Obama and all. They ought to send the FBI and investigate them all. Missouri is a hotbed of Anti Americanism.
On another amazing note.
The Orlando Sentinel which is smack dab in the middle of the central I-4 corridor that has been traditionally is slightly right of Pat Robertson, has just endorsed Barack Obama. They even had the temerity to call out McNasty for having an erratic position and poor judjement for picking Caribou Barbie. Maverickity Indeed.

Obama campaign raised $150M+ in September. That's a lot of donuts.

The thing that everyone should marvel at is this thing called “Risk” that is batted around but not even talked about with a sincere understanding to give to the American public. More over in my argument the American electorate should be out raged at the type of business “Risk” being offered to these Fat Cats, all the while ignoring the common home buying electorate.

What ever happened to the Title Insurance companies, not just to guarantee in terms of the real estate but also in terms, is the buyer in a reliable way good for the loan and will take the responsibility to be able to pay. Or are these the ones Americans find out have totally side stepped good old fashion business ethic here, and should be the held absolutely accountable.

This is past an out rage, for me the electorate will soon hit the streets in rage after finding out Billions if not trillions in Insurance money is not being honored because of fraud in the Insurance Industry with its ties to the Jekyll Island economic system we call the American Federal Reserve. Now, not talked about is how the foreign influence in the American so called free market has been. A huge foreign influence is hardwired to this Jekyll Island banking system for over a century, will be one difficult titanic to convert into a real free market. Because, here, Ladies and gentlemen of America our tax dollars have been just “Given”, or forgiven to these foreign entities for over a century with out challenge, freely with no strings, without any pay back or interest due to the America tax payer. To change this whole concept is the primer fair thing to do, but we will all witness, those at the top don’t think it is fair. Of course not to loose free money are you kidding? When was the last time the electorate was forgiven, for me it is for over a century.

Please consider the every shallow discussion about Insurance for the Fat Cats that buy these things called “Derivatives”. From the weak discussions, for me it is perceived that when buying into these things a Risk Insurance policy is part of the deal. Sounds like if some default occurs in payments the buyers are covered for that lost money. Sounds incredible, hell if the common home owner citizen had insurance like that, we would not be in this situation. Imagine if the electorate could buy insurance that could cover the electorate for a lost job or income to pay for their home. Sound crazy well it looks true for these loans in derivatives. A fat cat can buy a derivative with insurance to boot. That insurance may very well be the tax payer’s money. Free and clear with very little responsibility.

Americans find themselves backed up a hundred years to 1913 when the Federal Reserve took the money responsibility away from Congress, We the people are always told today by politicians that we know what to do with our money yet all the while Presidents and the Federal Reserve connected domestically and Internationally have been controlling the American market with our tax dollars. The most incredible contradiction in politics ever told to Americans. Here, many stories are out that is why JFK really was assassinated because he wanted to eliminated the Federal Reserve. Here, Ladies and gentlemen it only takes the pen of executive power of the President to do this. This is what this election is about. The Republicans are terrified, this change will happen with Obama.

You must take the US election into account. If Hon. Sen. McCain wins, Europe has an incentive to get agreements while there is still a semblance of sanity to American policies (and not the near certainty of even more hard-core Friedmanites), but if he loses, they will want to wait President* Bush out.

This reminds me of when I worked for a Very Large Multinational. I was part of a newly-formed group that had to define its purpose and processes from the ground up.

What did we spend our first six weeks doing? Defining and writing a formal process document describing how we would go about defining and writing the formal process document defining our group's purpose and processes. I am not making this up.

You're free in America to buy anything you want ... so long as a (probably Republican) businessman who hates your guts decides to offer it for sale/rent/etc. for the pleasure of raping you at the cash register.

Everybody's free to walk into a luxury car dealership, but few have the power to legally walk out with a luxury car.
