SO MUCH FOR MCCAIN'S OUTREACH TO WOMEN.... I don't think I've ever seen a campaign with a worse sense of timing.
Just yesterday, Sarah Palin held a rally in Nevada, flanked by women supporters she identified as Democrats and/or NOW members. The point of her speech was, apparently, to encourage women voters to support John McCain because he picked her as his running mate. "[O]nly our side has a woman on the ticket," Palin said, as if it were a trump card.
Unfortunately for the Republican campaign, while Palin was trying to do outreach to women in a swing state, McCain campaign manager Rick Davis appeared on Bill Bennett's radio show to talk about "feminism." Big mistake.
Davis explained that Palin drives "liberal feminists" "nuts" because "she's a conservative Republican" who's working as a governor. Bennett agreed, adding, "Let me give you three things that I think drives them crazy, and you don't have to comment. That's she's very attractive. That she's very competent or that she's very happy. You know, as a human being."
Instead of pushing back, and telling Bennett how absurd this is, McCain's campaign manager replied, "Yeah, all of the above."
And all of this comes the same week as McCain blasting the "feminist left" while on the campaign stump.
If there's a logic to all of this, it's hiding well.

Bennett should stick to discussing things he's well-versed in, such as compulsive gambling.

He neglected to mention those other things about Palin that drive feminists nuts...she's radically right, she's a liar, and she's kinda dingy.

The thing is, there are so many gaffes, lies, and contradictions, none of them reach the mainstream...

Cut Bill Bennett some slack. He bases that observation on the experiences he has had with women, most of whom serve him drinks while he is in the Casino. They are generally pretty, competent in their job, and always happy when he tips!

I agree with Stuart. You have to cut these Gray Old Paternalists some slack. They're just so proud of themselves for putting that pretty li'l gal on a national ticket that sometimes they can't help what they say.
After all, she probably winked at 'em!

Attractive? Yes. Happy? Apparently so. But competent? Competent? Uh, no.

It boggles the mind that any self-proclaimed feminist could be for Palin, replete with N.O.W. members(?).
Feminism at it's essence is a humane stance that celebrates the right of a woman's equal access to choice and voice in all spheres (personal, professional) of one's life.

Seriously, the "Hate Talk Express" strategy for success appears to be "let's piss off every possible demographic we can -- except racists." How many more groups of people can they ask their supports to hate?
I swear, if John McCain had run for president as himself, he'd be in the running now. But, he has shaken the devil's hand. And it looks like he's going to burn.

Anyone can claim to be anything. My girlfriend in college was both a Republican and a member of Amnesty International. Not to mention Pro-Choice and pro-Welfare.
My bet is a slight vetting of this group of "faux-minists" will show them to be quite the opposite.

So was Joan Walsh at that rally? I'm guessing yes, and that she brought Rebecca along too. Camille might even have attended, if they'd given her a skybox.

Liberal feminists have a lock on the appropriate roles for women these days? Wow, these guys sure know a lot about the ladies!

The thing that just stuns me is, these McCain campaign people cannot keep their mouths shut.
He could very well lose the election over that other remark about "If we keep talking about the economy, we'll lose." And the other day, one of them was talking about putting the "wedge" issue (his words) of Wright back on the table. Shucks, that's telling people your strategy is to divide Americans, in so many words! Rove would've never said this stuff -- he'd just have done it.
With McCain, this stuff happens over and over again. And it absolutely reflects on how McCain would run his White House -- with an incredible lack of focus and discipline.

I loved her exact quote:
Our opponents think they have the women’s vote all locked up, which is a little presumptuous since only our side has a woman on the ticket,
Yes, it is presumptuous to think you will win the female vote because you lead by 20 in the polls, but it is not presumptuous to think you will win the female vote just because you have a woman on the ticket.

These guys have been drinking their own kool-aid for too long, but then treating the voters as vapid and stupid, and easy manipulation with dumb propaganda has worked more often than not. The vulgarization of our political discourse may finally have reached its peak in Sarah Palin, but Bennett and Davis haven't figured that out, and probably won't.
One of the few reasurring outcomes of this so-called campaign has been the rejection of Sarah Palin's candidacy by those of us seriously concerned about the future and direction of the country.

I, for one, after welcoming our new socialist overlords, will be so happy not to see Rhinoceros Man, Rick Davis, on my TV ever again.
May he fade into obscurity along with Palin, apart from when he's prosecuted for the occasional felony having to do with his crooked lobbying. Then I'll be pleased to watch him do the perp walk.

I heard the audio and I'm pretty sure Bennett said "confident," not "competent."

Rick Davis is pretty scary looking -- thin lips, sculpted hair, intense gaze. Well, a little like McCain actually. Anyway, he should probably give the Spokesman for the Campaign job to someone a bit softer, a little warmer, a little less-squirrelly sounding. Maybe find a more inclusive message, too. Particularly in the face of evidence that the message he's got is not going over so well.

There can only be one explanation for all this: Members of the Republican Base are secretly being cloned and they'll all be of "voting age" by November 4.

Rick Davis is a dead ringer for Jeffery Dahmer. Identical twins separated at birth.

Republicans are similarly mystified when they put a black candidate like Alan Keyes or Michael Steele on their ticket and no actual black voters vote for them. A black candidate runs as a Democrat and black voters are all for it. See? Blacks only vote on the basis of race.

What? You don't think being attractive and happy are the 2 most important things that women look for in their Presidents?
Posted by: Patrick on October 22, 2008 at 1:55 PM | PERMALINK
"Let me give you three things that I think drives them crazy... That's she's very attractive (and that's seen as important in a VP by some unfathomably stupid voters). That she's (seen by other clueless voters as) very competent or that she's very happy (despite being up on ethics charges, put Wasilla in debt, and had higher unfavorable than favorable numbers)"
There. Fixed it for him.
Frustration now quite understandable.

But hey -- Camille Paglia likes her! Shouldn't they be shouting that joyously from the rooftops -- that a famously self-important, polysyllabic, self-styled "intellectual," antifeminist lesbian thinks Palin is hot stuff?

Hey, Bill Bennett eats feminists for lunch! And I mean that literally! Have you seen the guy? He can barely pivot in his pundit chair on CNN anymore. Clearly he hates Obama because he's skinny.
And Rick Davis looks like a cross between Norman Bates and Donald Duck--but without the moral rectitude of the former or the calm, unruffled demeanor of the latter.
Guys like this always trash women. I believe it's known as "sour grapes."

Amazing isn't it, that McCain (of all people) would pick Bennett, another gambler, to double down on trying to pick up the women's vote. They botch it as badly as McCain's use of language with his wife.
This has got to be one of the worst campaigns for any office in history. It's even worse than John Ashcroft's when he lost the Missouri senate race in 2000 to Mel Carnahan (who had died in an airplane accident).
Sometimes you just have to close your mouth to stop revealing your bigotry, misogyny, stupidity and arrogance.

Hey, now, no bashing that asshole Paglia for being a lesbian. I couldn't care less.
