PALIN TALKS TO DOBSON.... Sarah Palin's support may be dropping quickly among most Americans, but she remains a favorite of the religious right movement. Palin chatted with Focus on the Family's James Dobson, and the two were clearly very much on the same page.

In an interview posted online Wednesday, Sarah Palin told Dr. James Dobson of "Focus on the Family" that she is confident God will do "the right thing for America" on Nov. 4.

Dobson asked the vice presidential hopeful if she is concerned about John McCain's sagging poll numbers, but Palin stressed that she was "not discouraged at all."

"To me, it motivates us, makes us work that much harder," she told the influential Christian leader, whose radio show reaches tens of millions of listeners daily. "And it also strengthens my faith because I know at the end of the day putting this in God's hands, the right thing for America will be done, at the end of the day on Nov. 4."

Dobson praised Palin's opposition to abortion rights, to which the governor affirmed that she is "hardcore pro-life."

If you listen to the interview, note the rhetorical shift for Palin. While she usually likes to emphasize words like "maverick" and "independence," talking to Dobson, Palin practically boasted of how little the Republican ticket strays from far-right orthodoxy.

According to a rough transcript provided by my friends at Right Wing Watch, Palin bragged about the McCain/Palin platform, which "respects life," and returns "to the social issues that are what Republicans, at least in the past, had articulated and tied to stand on." She added, "You would maybe have assumed that we would have gotten further away from those strong planks. But no, they're there, they're solid, we stand on them."

In other words, don't worry about Republicans moderating an inch on divisive culture-war, social issues. Palin assured Dobson that's not the case. Indeed, she said she believes from the "bottom of [her] heart" that McCain is "solidly there" on implementing far-right policies.

It's easy to get the sense that Sarah Palin is not a vice presidential candidate sympathetic to the concerns of a religious right activist, she's a religious right activist running for the vice presidency.

Keep walking those planks, Gov. Palin, until you drop into the shark-infested waters...round about November 5th. Don't worry, it's God's will.

I'm sure she's right. And I hope she takes deep consolation in the fact that the right man won as she heads back to Alaska on Nov 5.

WTF does this mean? God isn't voting on Election Day. Does she think God will persuade people to do The "Right" Thing? Or that God will change people's votes after they're cast? Or that if Obama wins, God will smite us, lo for we are sinners, and she'll return to Alaska just in time for the Rapture?

God, she's a dullard.

Sarah Palin's support may be dropping quickly among most Americans...

...but not among "real" Americans.

God, being omnipotent and all, shouldn't have any problem making the "right" thing happen on Nov. 4. If Obama wins, the religious should accept God's will and quit complaining.

Oh..oh... too much to say. When Obama wins... one of the first questions publicly put to her then, should be: Governor Palin - how's your faith now?

Posted by: sduffys on October 22, 2008 at 1:33 PM | PERMALINK

Hey, I thought she was going to be an advocate for us women? Oh well, maybe she could advocate and get me $150,000 for some clothes.

So if Obama wins, it's not because the American people have finally rejected the GOP ... it won't be because the McCain campaign flailed around like a drunk epileptic on a roller coaster ... it won't be because the more America got to know Sarah Palin, the less it liked her ... and it won't be because they decided to run a destructive campaign, rather than focus on the issues.

Nope. It'll all be God's fault.

What is it with Republicans and their total lack of personal responsibility?

Posted by: Mark D on October 22, 2008 at 1:38 PM | PERMALINK

She is a talentless nobody who will say whatever the person she is talking to wants to hear in order for that person to like her. That's what it's all about, that everyone like her to mask her lack of any real abilities whatsoever.

Comedy Central's interview with the current mayor of Wasilla confirms that the duties of the mayor include a weekly staff meeting and a weekly check signing session, and that's it. If you haven't seen it already, you should. It answers a whole lot of questions.

"God will do the right thing on Nov. 4th"

When I hear that I remember, chuckling as I reminisce, about the guy who was praying for torrential rains to wash out the democratic national convention.

What happened? Well, a freakin' hurricane hit during the REPUBLICAN national convention.
BWAAAHAAAHAAA

So, if you believe in God, then I'd suspect that he WILL do the right thing on Nov. 4th, and rid our country of republican rule once and for all.

Wishful thinking perhaps.

I can't wait to see how they reconcile this prediction with an Obama victory.

Hypocrits all! Respect life is a joke for these folks. Where is their respect for life in waging an unneeded war in Iraq, when executing a criminal, when torturing (and killing) for information, when holding people at Gitmo, when leaving many to suffer illness and injury without medical care, when thousands die in Darfur for lack of action, when... okay this is too long to put all down here.

Respect, pro-life. Ha.

ckelly - That was great LOL!
Here in Texas, Diebold has worked it's magic on the first day of early voting. Seems that if you voted a straight Dem ticket in Houston, your vote was reversed from Obama to McCain. No joke. Of course voting officials claim to have "fixed" the problem....

Kinda sorta off-topic, but Palin now gives me a chance to quote George Carlin at length about abortion:

"Boy, these conservatives are really something, aren't they? They're all in favor of the unborn. They will do anything for the unborn. But once you're born, you're on your own!

"Pro-life conservatives are obsessed with the fetus from conception to nine months. After that, they don't want to know about you. They don't want to hear from you. No nothing! No neo-natal care, no day care, no head start, no school lunch, no food stamps, no welfare, no nothing!

"If you're pre-born, you're fine. If you're pre-school, you're f***ed! You're f***ed!

"Conservatives don't give a s*** about you until you reach military age. Then they think you are just fine, just what they've been looking for. Conservatives want live babies so they can raise them to be dead soldiers.

"Pro-'life'! These people aren't pro-life, they're killing doctors! What kind of pro-life is that? What, they'll do anything they can to save a fetus, but if it grows up to be a doctor they just might have to kill it?

"They're not pro-life. You know what they are? They're anti-woman. Simple as it gets: anti-woman. They don't like 'em. They don't like women.

"They believe a woman's primary role is to function as a broodmare for the state."

>"the right thing for America will be done, at the end of the day on Nov. 4."

Well, how about Nov 3rd, or next Monday, or today?

For example, right now the market is down another 400 points. Hey, it's ok, it's God's plan and the right thing for America!

Rave on.

Given the reaction of women to today's news of Palin's 150K freebie wardrobe, I wonder if there won't be a sort of "Bradley Effect" for her. I know several Republican women who told pollsters (presumably within earshot of their husbands) that they're voting for McCain but tell their women friends in private they detest her and think she's unqualified AND a bad mother. I know at least one who, in the privacy of the voting booth, will be marking her ballot for Obama.

Posted by: dalloway on October 22, 2008 at 1:51 PM | PERMALINK

Yes, great distinction. She and anyone who supports her are indeed first and foremost the EXTREME Religious Right who are hoping to use the V.P. slot or any other venue of influence to forward their beliefs while demonizing others who stand in their way.

It's pretty creepy. I was going to be Palin for Halloween, but what she represents and what she is trying to keep alive is too real to be funny-scary.

It's scary-scary.

I would like to ask Sarah Palin: if a fetus is an unborn baby, does that make you an undead corpse?

There is a building tension that will result in the sundering of the Republican party as we know it. When it finally collapses on November 5th, 2008, Palin will rise like a demented, moronic phoenix from the ashes and lead the resulting fundamentalists' party.

The Republicans with brains and businesses will be left with a choice: new party or Democratic party. Many of them are already making their choice apparent.

Karl Rove destroyed the Republican party.

Posted by: Bush Lover on October 22, 2008 at 2:11 PM | PERMALINK

With the religious right already in their pocket you'd think that the McCain campaign would be trying to reach out beyond the hard-core fundies. They might even try to win over those Americans who are frightened at the prospect that a shallow, ignorant, zealot might be a heartbeat away from the presidency.

God's will? God's will? Why even have an election? Why form a more perfect union? Why, you know, govern?

Dang it, God gets to do everything!

I really don't think anyone gaives a rat's ass what the Christian Taliban thinks . Their time has passed. I think the reasoned intelligent manner that Obama runs his presidency will reduce this faction to a blip on the radar screen of modern political parties.

I did a quick calculation, and at the rate they spent for this election, a now two year campaign cycle for president means that the RNC would have to shell out $2,190,000 to clothe Palin. Considering some of the things for which she's billed the state of Alaska I'd say that six mil for Palin upkeep is not out of the question.

Posted by: Dennis - SGMM on October 22, 2008 at 2:38 PM | PERMALINK

Assuming the election is allowed to proceed at all, according to Palast and Kennedy it's already been stolen. Greg Palast was absolutely 100% correct when he predicted/advised that the 2004 election had been stolen before it was held. Now this year, the GOP has stolen 2 votes for every new registrant, has purged HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of voters from the rolls; we have already seen vote flipping taking place... On November 4, Americans voting the democratic ticket will once again be disenfranchised. The DIEBOLD-sanctioned results are already in: McCain 51.2% popular vote; +3 electoral votes. The media is already jumping through its ass to come up with what it hopes will be passable explanations for the large disparity between exit polls and the expected election results.

There will be no riots in the street, for once the election has been stolen, the bankers running this show will finally pull the plug on the dollar. Burdened with devastating economic ruin, hundreds of millions of Americans will quickly forget the stolen election as they scrounge for their next bushel full of worthless dollars.

We are so fucked, it's difficult to imaagine.

I hope to hell I'm wrong but so far, it doesn't look too good for the kid.

Posted by: getaclue on October 22, 2008 at 2:46 PM | PERMALINK

Excellent! If she is confident that God will do the right thing for us on election day (never mind the voters, I suppose), then I am sure we can count on her to accept and abide by the results of the election, whichever way it goes. Right? Riiiiight.

READ: What God Wants by Neale Donald Walsch. The God I recognize is Omnipotent, Omniscient and Omnipresent, and doesn't "need" anything from me or anyone else. He/She/It is not male/female, animal, vegetable or mineral, and is all of that and more, and has no desires that the mere thought of which doesn't satisfy. The Bible, Koran/Qur'an, Torah, Bhagavad Gita, Tao Te Ching, et al are all human interpretations of visions and other intuitive contacts with a Higher Mind/God/Nature/Universal Principle. We humans have free will to do as we think is for our highest good. Whether this is a Gift of God or through "evolution" is not as relevant as how we use it. Natural Law is not negotiable, nor is Spiritual Law. The more we understand how it works, the more adept we are at using it. Gravity is not reversed by the use of aerodynamics; it is employed through the understanding of how it works. Sail boats do not manipulate the wind; they use the wind through an understanding of the way wind interacts with the sails.

On Nov. 4th or 5th, we will be told the outcome of the Presidential Election. If the results have been manipulated and someone other than the one receiving the most popular votes and electoral votes wins, it will be because those doing the manipulation were more knowledgeable of how to determine the outcome than those who lost. Whatever the outcome, it will be our responsibility to use that information to improve our nation and the world. God will have nothing to do with it. We, the people, including ALL THE PEOPLE, are the ones who determine or dictate the outcome. Once you accept this Truth, the rest will be much easier. Sarah Palin and James Dobson's invoking God as the reason, one way or the other, for the election results, is only relevant to the extent that people are influenced by their point of view.

I absolutely know that God is the Source and Substance of all that is; I also know that I, and any other sentient being, have the power to create using that Source. It is all about Consciousness. How Conscious are you?

Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and now James Dodson. All those really hard hitting interviews. How can main stream America not think that Sarah Palin is not qualified to be vice president and if God so wills, president? What's she gotta do? Go on one of those Sunday morning talk shows and have a real interview. I'm sure she'd love to, but Sunday A. M. is church time and that's when she stops for a few minutes to spend some quality time with real Americans. In case you haven't been paying attention for the last eight years, God is a Republican.

God didn't have his kid ride into Jerusalem on that first Palm Sunday on the back of an elephant, now did he? Nope---because God is a Democrat.

Palin is scared shitless of the fact, too, being the lipsticked little Sadducee that she is. But when Dobson finally figures it out, we'll hear his soulless spirit howling all the way from the infernal regions...

...and rightfully so.

Once again the media does not accurately report on the Republican ticket. This commentary is not accurate so be sure to listen to the interview yourself. At least this way you will get the comments in context. Americans must begin to take responsibility for seeking out the truth and stop letting bloggers and poor reporting keep us from the truth about the issues these candidates stand for. No one candidate will hit all your personal stances so educate yourself and see which one aligns with most of your beliefs. I too am praying for God's Will to be done in this election, aren't you?

No, I am most definitely NOT "praying for God's Will to be done in this election".

I am hoping for the people's will to be done in this election -- and not thwarted by Republican voter disenfranchisement, intimidation and fraud as was the case in the last two stolen elections.

Better than that, doubtful. Per your first statement that I'm quoting, Karl Rove destroyed the Democratic Party as well, which was what the neocons were after all along. Today's Democrats are yesterday's Republicans, and today's Republicans are off the map completely.

Gotta go with The Onion!

"What if both sides pray to god, isn't that putting him in an awkward position?"
Posted by: royalblue_tom on October 22, 2008 at 6:30 PM | PERMALINK

GOD DOESN'T TAKE SIDES! Sorry for Yelling, but no one seems to be listening. royalblue_tom is close with the Onion quote. And, Buford, I like what you say, as well. The prayer I like is "Thy will be done, for the highest and best of all concerned." Now, we all still get to have an opinion on what that means, but if we talk to each other and listen to each other, we may come to some common ground and learn and grow from the experience.

Do you really think McCain/Palin want to spend the rest of their lives fighting everyone who disagrees with them? I know the word "fight" seems to be the most used word by their campaign, but it must get very tiring to have to fight 24/7 for your position, right or wrong. What must it be like to have to be looking over your shoulder every minute, for fear someone is trying to take something from you or assault you? I don't think Obama has that feeling because he is not on the attack 24/7. He is looking for consensus and cooperation and that is probably why he seems so much more relaxed and rested. He is prepared and he knows where he stands on most issues, so doesn't have to rethink every response to every question. Contrary to the McCain explanation, Obama gave a very measured and coherent response to Joe the Plumber. The fact that McCain's campaign jumped on "Spread the Wealth", without examining its meaning, placed them in a position, once again, to have to defend the incoherence of their position.

Fear is a very determined adversary, unless you learn to use its energy to find a better solution.
