BACHMANN'S TROUBLES GO FROM BAD TO WORSE.... Five days after Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) called for a new round of McCarthyism, her troubles keep getting worse. At this point, her Democratic opponent, El Tinklenberg, has raised $1 million in the wake of Bachmann's madness, while Bachmann is still trying to explain herself.
In the latest twist, Bachmann told voters yesterday that she'd never seen "Hardball" before, and is convinced that Chris Matthews had set a "trap" and she "stepped into it."
As excuses go, this is pretty silly. Bachmann, a member of Congress, said some crazy things. Matthews had the wherewithal to follow up and inquire further, and Bachmann responded by saying even crazier things. That's not a "trap," it's an "interview."
Besides, Bachmann was just as ridiculous yesterday when she told far-right blogger Hugh Hewitt, "Barack Obama's views are against America." I guess Hewitt is setting traps for Bachmann, too, that rascal.
Complicating matters, the Huffington Post reports that the National Republican Congressional Committee "is pulling its media purchases from Bachmann's race."
Six days ago, Bachmann seemed poised for an easy re-election campaign. Today, she's in freefall.

Now if we could just do something about Patrick McHenry over in North Carolina we'd be in really good shape.
Oh, and Jean Schmidt, too, can't forget her. No matter how much we try.

Please please let her lose!
After I turn past the OBAMA WINS banner on Page One Nov. 5, the next thing I'll look for is whether this hater lost.

What's the country coming to when you can't even make crypto-fascist comments on national television without jeopardizing your political career?
Posted by: Stephen Stralka on October 22, 2008 at 5:06 PM | PERMALINK
She should have kept her own trap shut. I don't think Matthews forced her into asking the national media to conduct an investigation into who in Congress was "anti-American."
Oh well, experience is a hard teacher.

This woman, as I understand, had a fairly safe seat. All she had to do, up until last week, was just run a ho-hum campaign and she was in for another two years. Maybe she thought she was auditioning for a position in the very unlikely to happen McCain cabinet?
The best thing about this kind of meltdown is that shows lifelong Rethug supporters that they had gotten lazy and really weren't paying attention to the people representing them. While she would still find lots of support for that kind of unhinged idiocy in states like Oklahoma or Kansas and the in Deep South, Minnesota conservatives aren't so rabid.

Conservatives who have been interviewed in the MN 6th District say they saw nothing wrong with her comments, and that it was refreshing to hear someone say out loud what we're all thinking.

More evidence that every single race needs to be contested - no matter how much of a long shot it looks to be. You never know when events are going to overtake a campaign that should be a sure thing, and there should be someone there to pick up the pieces when that happens.

Bachmann was just as ridiculous yesterday when she told far-right blogger Hugh Hewitt, "Barack Obama's views are against America."
Point of Order, Your McCarthy-ness! Isn't the very foundation of these United States of America based on the sole premise that a citizen can have opinions, or "views", of any sort without them being dismissed as "against America?" And, as a Democracy, is it not in our mutual interest to allow the electorate -- the "people" -- to decide which views are to be held as worthy of becoming policy? And, in effect, is not Bachmann condemning every citizen that votes for Barack Obama to be labeled as "against America" and therefore, not a citizen at all, but an "enemy combatant?"

Won't you people *please* leave this poor woman alone? Can't you see that she has a very serious mental illness?
You wouldn't make fun of a homeless person who was sitting on the street talking to the voices in his head. Why do you make fun of this woman? Just because she has a home? Because in every other way she is exactly like the mentally ill people we see on the street every day. Cut her some slack!

OMG Chris Matthews is now stomping Nancy Ptotting-pooter and she still smiles like she's on crack. No wonder Republican men love these whores. They never stop smiling! Betty Fucking Crockers!

It's just too much fun watching these wingnuts self implode. What's even more fun is watching them dig themselves deeper when they try and explain away that what they said was "taken out of context".
I wish there was more that I could do to help them out, but it looks like that isn't necessary.

I couldn't believe my ears when I was sitting there doing some errands and decided to tune into Mathews last Friday.
How does one even begin to define who is Patriotic (or Pro-American)and who isn't? And what does she propose should be done with those she decides don't meet the grade? How can it be that this is 2008 and someone like her is in public office?
The most haunting thing to me was that she was so clear with her conviction--there was not a single moment of hesitation in her voice when she shouted out a gleeful plea for this so-called inquiry.
And then I realized there was something even more frightening than this woman. I realized she is not alone. Not by a long shot. She was just dumb enough to say it out loud. She was spurred on by the sentiment that has been rising lately, sparked by McCain's campaign.
Bigotry is alive and well, and history tells us during times of financial and international turmoil it's readily exacerbates tenfold. The dollar is dropping in value in direct proportion to the rise of paranoia, scapegoating and condemnation of individuals and entire groups of people.
I did not live during the McCarthy era, but I'm old enough to have friends and relatives whose entire lives and careers were utterly ruined by the grand scale paranoid, baseless and bigoted inquisition that transpired during the 1950's.
History can and does repeat itself again and again. Thank goodness today we have the tapes rolling, so we are confronted with our own worst demons in a way that makes it increasingly hard to keep our head in the sand.

Interesting how Talk Radio "entertainment" host Rush Limbaugh's daily dirges or such like Ann Coulter's Book "Treason" hasn't been mentioned as the standard bearers of opinions like Michele Bachman's. Ms. Bachman didn't come up with this sentiment on her own, she simply parroted a version of an unsubstantiated stereotype she'd heard and absorbed.
Yet Bachman refuses to take ownership of such sentiments after she herself said them, choosing to deflect the blame onto someone else. So she knows her sentiments aren't kosher. Too late to stifle that high moral call to investigate members of Congress now that her paycheck is endangered.
She should look at Limbaugh and Coulter and realize that those two make millions off saying the same drivel that may well cost her her job. Lo, the situational irony.

It may be too much to hope, but I'm hoping nonetheless that we're turning a corner. Used to be there was no penalty whatsoever for this sort of thing. That's no longer true.

It's truly amusing that the Republicans park these hideous women in safe seats where they still manage to fuck it up. Who votes for people like this, and don't the voters feel sort of . . . insulted? Humiliated? Stupid? Duped?

Republican politicians really are like whiney children aren't they, nothing is ever their fault and they use the same excuses over and over for everything.

It's been asked, not answered, but again:
What the hell was Michele doing on Hardball in the first place?
Sure, put out some smack about Obama and his palling around with terrist pals.. (And Rezko?) duh, I get that much. but you don't say it like that!!
I think she's within her rights to say it was a trap and that she stepped in it. Well? Other members of congress might call it an interview. but, hey. Good luck. here's your news clippings and congress doo-dads. And your legislative record. Remember when you said minimum wage should be zero so everybody could make more?
that was awesome. ta!

You're not serious, are you? Whatever makes you think that the Republican Party holds itself to some standard of decency, especially this year?
Not backing down from idiocy is how they got themselves into this mess in the first place!

And let us not forget Aubrey Immelman, Bachmann's unsuccessful opponent in the GOP primary, who has decided to revive his candidacy as a write-in for the general election. He might bleed off some disgusted GOP voters who would not be willing to vote for the Democratic candidate, perhaps enough to turn the district blue. Sweet!

The American have slowly regained their sanity. Bachmann's smears are not discernibly different from those used by the Repubs in 2004 or in 2006. What appears to have changed is the American peoples' tolerance for McCarthyism. That's heartening.

"When are republicans going to denounce her statements?"
Please. I wouldn't touch it. Unless I was Norm Coleman or umm.. Oh! McCain? It's only Wednesday..
fairness, Coleman has.
(I'm NOT the Slime oozing out from your TV set.. I suspended my slime campaign for something I think will be more effective now. I announced it and everything. I got a Wellstone-like bus and put "HOPE" on it. ps. I'll be a Democrat again within a year. pps. Franken's a liberal.)

Subject Line: Beat Long Poll Lines with Absentee Ballots from StateDemocracy.org
Many state and local election officials are encouraging voters to use Absentee Ballots to avoid the long lines and delays expected at the polls on November 4th due to the record-breaking surge in newly registered voters.
Voters in most states still have time to obtain an Absentee Ballot by simply downloading an official application form available through www.StateDemocracy.org, a completely FREE public service from the nonprofit State Democracy Foundation.

My brother, who lives in Minneapolis, tells me that Minnesotans are so repressed (Garrison Keillor isn't actually joking on Prairie Home Companion) that when they get a chance to vote for a complete whackjob, they take it. It's a way to anonymously rebel against conformity. Jesse Ventura is just one example, although he turned out to be not so bad. The same cannot be said for Bachmann.
