WHERE'S CONDI?.... On "Meet the Press" yesterday, John McCain touched on Colin Powell's support for Barack Obama, expressing his "disappointment." He added, however, that he has the support of five former Republican Secretaries of State, though he struggled a bit in naming them.
As Ali Frick noted, there was one noticeable absence from McCain's list.
So why isn't Condoleezza Rice, the current Secretary of State, on that list? Rice has said she's "not going to get involved in this political campaign." But perhaps her hesitation has something to do with Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK). When asked in September whether Palin had enough experience for the job of vice president, Rice deliberately avoided the question, saying only, "These are decisions that Senator McCain has made. I have great confidence in him."
It is rather curious. Consider Rice's interest in the last presidential campaign, when she took a very active role. In an item that is no longer online, U.S. News reported on the scene at the White House on Election Day 2004.
It was about 2 p.m. Election Day, and White House political chief Karl Rove was steaming mad. Crummy media exit polls were all over the Internet, claiming a Kerry blowout and possibly depressing the GOP vote, as well as Bushies around the nation. "Karl was furious," we're told. So he went to work in a White House dining room, laying out electoral spreadsheets, scrolling through GOP exit polls, and watching TV. "Karl knows every single precinct," says a friend. "We were never behind."
But how would he get the word out? Enter Chief of Staff Andy Card and national security adviser Condi Rice. "She was into it," said the friend. Card shouted out vote counts from the computer, Rice scribbled them down, and Rove compared them with old statistics.
In fact, Rice arguably did more campaign work than any NSA ever. Four years ago, on the day of a massive military operation against Zarqawi, Rice gave a campaign speech. The day Poland announced it would withdraw troops from Iraq, Rice gave another campaign speech. While Europeans negotiated with Iran to end its nuclear program, Rice gave another campaign speech.
And now she's reluctant to even endorse McCain? Hmm.

For the record I would neither endorse McCain not would I seek the endoresment of Condi Rice. Both efforts would be a waste of good energy. Both individuals have led our country down a dark path. ("I don't want the next smoking gun to be a mushroom cloud.")

As I recall, she has hinted she might endorse Obama. Of course, she can't, so she has decided not to endorse anybody. This isn't hard. If she preferred McCain she would endorse him.

Everyone knows that all Secretaries of State are racists. And because there are no flesh-devouring lizard-women from Omicron Persei 8 in this election, she has no one to endorse.

She didn't have such high standards four or eight years ago. Let's be honest. Bush ain't that much brighter than Palin. And his ability to learn from experience is nothing to brag about, either.

Rice isn't going to endorse Obama. If she had been thinking about it before, she would have changed her mind after seeing the reaction to Powell's endorsement.
And Obama's better off without Rice's endorsement. While Powell has the love of the beltway press and a healthy respect from a lot of independent voters (who apparently weren't paying attention when he was lying us into a war on behalf of W), Rice has neither. The Beltway press doesn't really like her that much, and the only voters I know who like her are Republicans who are voting for McCain (and who formerly said they respected Powell, but not since last Sunday).
The only thing a Rice endorsement would do is make some Democrats on the lefter-side of the party think twice about Obama.

Considering what a disaster the Bush Administration has been on national security -- ruining a dacded-long brandign effort for the Republicans in a mere eight years -- Rice arguably did more campaign work than NSA work, period.
Given her self-evident incompetence, perhaps she should have stuck more to campaign work.

For those keeping score at home:
For those liberals who are bad at math...
1.Henry Kissinger
2.Alexander Haig
3.Lawrence Eagleburger
4.George Shultz
5.James Baker
I saw Eagleburger and thought "WHO????"
He was SoS from December 8, 1992 – January 20, 1993.
One month, 8 days.
WTF, John?

Well, she was due a pretty big promotion.

Hey, now, Danp, don't talk about Condi's husband that way. ;)

Screw Condi. She and Joey Lieberman can kiss my grits. (How 'bout that "Joe Lieberman: Fuck-Off!" column below? Yeeeowch!)

The explanation for this is rather simple: she and Robert Gates were under orders from Bush to remain as nonpartisan as possible. The notion that she was going to endorse Obama is a left wing mastabatory fantasy.
Indeed, there are indications, when discussing Iraq and the Surge, that while she has allowed for Obama's disagreement on Iraq, she remains convinced that going in was the right thing to do and that Obama was deeply mistaken to oppose Bush's policy.
Lastly, there have been substantiated stories in the Blade and other outlets that she was covertly lobbying to be McCain's running mate, but that the AssClown RNC shot her down at the last minute because of her sexual orientation. She was one of the two finalists. Palin was the other one. McCain wanted Condi, but the RNC put up a "No Lesbians!" firewall.
Of course, the McCain Campaign is doing so much better with Sarah Palin and is on track to send Barack back to the Senate, so McCain made the right choice, now, didn't he! Biden's grabastic errors in fact would have been shredded to pieces by Rice in a debate. She wouldn't even have had to come out in her dominatrix gear.
The AssClown RNC: substituting Bullshit for Brains since Reagan Left Town. One of the reasons I haven't given those asshats a dime since the Asteroid killed the Dinosaurs is because of decisions like this.
By the way, has anyone asked Tom Cole how our Congressional Candidates are doing? Nope? I didn't think so. I heard we might just beat Murtha, but only because Rendell really wants to throw him over the side.
Condi Rice is actually one of our bright stars. She'll go back to Stanford, write her book, maybe run the 49'ers for a while, and then get back into politics as the fissures and difficulties of the One Partei Regime begin the make themselves felt. The problem with echo chambers like this place and Kos is that you folks think that most of the country hates her like you do. They don't. Regular people don't think like the politically obsessed. They have real lives. She's rather popular, but she never got into politics this cycle because she understood that Republicans were toxic this cycle, and also that it might be sometime before a single woman who just might be gay might have a chance at holding significant office in this country.
In a sense, the fact that McCain bypassed her in the end was as much a blessing for her as it was a curse for McCain.

If I were either candidate, I would run as fast as I could from a Condi Rice endorsement. This is the woman that has the unenviable distinction of being the WORST NSA and SoS in this country's history.
Endorsements like that you don't need.

Section 9,
Is that parody or are you just delusional?
PLEASE run Condi on the GOP in 2012! After witnessing four years of real diplomacy, people will realize what a royal train wreck she's been these past eight years.

To be fair, she was campaigning for her own administration in 2004. And her main role in the White House always seemed to be protecting GWB.
