MONDAY'S MINI-REPORT.... Today's edition of quick hits:

* We've had some extraordinarily frustrating server problems today. We're aware of it, working on it, and apologize for the inconvenience.

* Scary beyond words: "Federal agents have broken up a plot to assassinate Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama and shoot or decapitate 102 black people in a Tennessee murder spree, the ATF said Monday. In court records unsealed Monday, federal agents said they disrupted plans to rob a gun store and target a predominantly African-American high school by two neo-Nazi skinheads.... Jim Cavanaugh, special agent in charge of the Nashville field office for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, said the two men planned to shoot 88 black people and decapitate another 14. The numbers 88 and 14 are symbolic in the white supremacist community."

* The Dow fell another 200 points today, closing at 8175.

* This seems rather important: "U.S. military helicopters launched an extremely rare attack Sunday on Syrian territory close to the border with Iraq, killing eight people in a strike the government in Damascus condemned as 'serious aggression.' A U.S. military official said the raid by special forces targeted the network of al-Qaida-linked foreign fighters moving through Syria into Iraq."

* On a related note, there's been an increase in CIA airstrikes against militants in the Pakistani mountains.

* An aide to Rep. Frank Wolf (R-Va.) beat and assaulted Democratic trackers over the weekend. Wolf's office, after a lengthy delay, apologized for the incident this afternoon.

* The Reuters newsroom in New York was evacuated today after an envelope with a "puff of powder" was found. Authorities found the powder to be harmless soon thereafter.

* There's a real problem with the presidential ballot in North Carolina.

* Sarah Palin started talking about her wardrobe again yesterday. Apparently, the McCain campaign isn't happy about it.

* And finally, I'm pretty sure this is a video the McCain campaign doesn't want getting around.

Anything to add? Consider this an open thread.

An aide to Rep. Frank Wolf (R-Va.) beat and assaulted Democratic trackers over the weekend.

Wolf is another one of these Republicans who is trying to hide his party identification. In the TV ad I saw he merely describes himself as an independent centrist. Of course, this is after the ad claims that even Dems consider his middle age librarian-like opponent, Judy Feder, a wild eyed librul.

Ah, Sarah's clothing. Now she's a victim...and how will that play for her... Hmmmm... it is apparent-- no matter what it is-- it's all about her.
What an enormous yet troubled ego this eternally dissatisfied, unfulfilled woman exhibits.
Her ever-converging crises.
That is diva behavior

That Florida video is crazy - I love that people think they can get you arrested just because they don't trust you. HAHA! I wonder how hard it would be to rig a camera to emit an electrical shock about the voltage of a dog training collar when the lens is covered? Because it certainly looks like those dogs need some training down in Florida. And who wants to bet that guy who was threatening to have her arrested went inside and whined and cried to everyone who would listen. Awww...poor baby, is this your one and only claim to fame?

With the mounting bad news for their campaign, McCain/Palin will have no choice but to go increasingly negative in their attacks. Anybody else see this leaked 527 spot?

Re the Obama Plot ; I hope people don't overreact to this. I'm thinking it is more along the lines of the losers they snagged in Miami who were going to "blow up" the Sears Tower. No money no shoes no brains . Just a bunch of limp dicks talking to each other and sounding tough.

From the accounts I've seen, these guys were quite a bit more serious than the Sears Tower "bombers." The chances that they could have gotten anywhere near Obama are pretty much nil, but they probably could have gone all Buford Furrow or Columbine and killed at least a few innocent people.

When someone gets to the point of committing actual burglaries to further their plot, they are definitely dangerous, even if they never reach their original target and lash out at someone else instead.

If her lips are moving, she’s lying.

Sarah Palin made a speech Sunday in which she listed, seriously, the clothes and accessories she was wearing. She then claimed she wasn’t wearing her $35.00 wedding ring, because it hurts her hand when she has to shake so many hands.

I guess she’s so “mavericky,” that she wears her wedding ring on her right hand instead her left like the rest of us. Or, she does wear it on her left hand, she just shakes left-handed, as befits a maverick.

I think it’s just another example of McCain/Palin lying, even when they don’t need to, because lying had become their default position.

Virginia NAACP is suing regarding concerns that the state is not prepared for large voter turnout--they're asking for a few things to help ensure the vote gets out. Their voting hours are shorter than most, for example (close at 7:00 pm).

* There's a real problem with the presidential ballot in North Carolina.

Another example of why all presidential and congressional elections should be conducted under federally mandated standards. These are national elections and therefore should use the same procedures instead of every state being allowed to screw-up elections in unique ways.

Their voting hours are shorter than most, for example (close at 7:00 pm). -- Unknown, @18:40

It still gives us 13 hrs; we open at 6AM. For the precinct captains, who have to be there throughout the day (the rest of us work in two shifts), that means at least 16hrs straight in real time, because they have to be there at 5M and can't leave till all the counting had been done, all the envelopes properly packed and signed by everyone working at the polls and the results reported to the Registrar. In the past, it had been ca 9PM; this year, we expect it to be later.

Also, although the official closing time is 7PM, that doesn't mean the polls actually do close then. Everyone waiting in line at 7PM *must* be allowed to vote. At 7PM, we're instructed to go out, announce the closing, then hit the end of the line and start taking names; all of those will be allowed to vote.

I still think having Election Day on a Tuesday instead of over the weekend is a hare-brained idea whose time has long passed, but, within its constraints, we're doing the best we can.

I could also wish the state had easier requirements for absentee voting (we don't have early voting per se). I sent off my husband today to vote absentee and he wasn't allowed to; even though he's 84yo and finds standing for a long time difficult, it's not an obstacle, apparently. But that might differ from registrar to registrar; I don't know.

Otherwise... At least this year it's Repubs who're likely to squeal the loudest about our early closing. The main problem with early closing is that, as the late exit poll/early reports data get released here, some people in the Mid-West and West may not have yet made their minds. If they hear Virginia has flipped to blue, it may be their tipping point (everyone would rather vote for a winner).

I've seen some talk on the Right about this interview Biden did:

http://www.wftv.com/video/17790025/index.html

As a Biden skeptic, I was fully expecting to see some gaffistry... but it wasnt there.

It wasnt really that interesting. I mean, the interviewer was very clearly and heavily slanted in her questioning. Biden called her out on it, but went ahead and calmly and coherently answered her questions. Other than that, nothing of note happened.

One hopes that all that will happen coming out of this is that the anchor gets a talking-to about the basics of neutral journalism. I mean, asking tough questions is great, but she was just making ridiculous rightwing assumptions here.

The fact that the Right wants to make a big deal out of this shows that they are really grasping at straws.

In regards to that video:

Now, I know that any info leaked about the absentee ballots themselves is protected by confidentiality, but I didn't realize that by signing a little agreement, freedom of the press is taken away! Interesting....Props to that chick, though. Love'd how strong she was and basically dared the guy to call the cops. I think she knew what she was doing and what her rights really are.

Is anyone else out there suspicious that the US attack on Syria is a parting gift from the White House neocons to the McCain campaign; very beneficial if Syria were to take the bait, and give the US an excuse for some feelgood retaliation. Unlikely though- in the last 8 years, Syria's outsmarted the White House at every turn, and there's no reason why they would mess it up now, with only a few days to go before the end of Republican incompetence.

@ TG Chicago That interview was dome here in ol' Mickey Mouse Central Florida , where up until recently it was 80% Repug. (also where that video of the campaign center shenanigans was shot) These people are rabid . I have a boss who is a CPA and has a Masters degree tell me I had better be careful of Obama because of the terrorists he hangs around with. I just looked at her and said you have got to be kidding me. Faux news coming right back at me . Even the local NBC swings right. The people in my office are in "love" with Palin even though they are all in a tax bracket that will suffer under McCain- go figure. Its tough being a Dem here.

You suppose these are the same guys that think Muslims are bloodthirsty monsters????

Considering that these white supremacist morons love to try and foment "race war," they were probably hoping that people would think that Islamic extremists had committed their crimes and white people everywhere would rise up.

Hey, it's way less crazy than Tim McVeigh's conviction that bombing Oklahoma City would lead to a race war.

It's also starting to sound like the "kill Obama" part of it was something they came up with under interrogation to make themselves sound more scary than they actually are.

I too thought the aggressive stikes against Syria were manipulative in timing. In early 2005,
the Middle East plundering Bush and fellow in-house neo cons said the insurgency in Iraq
was in part the fault of Syria--in fact, in keeping with Bush dogma of no personal guilt, representative war-mongerer Rumsfield would not assume responsibility, and rather said
"Partly it's a function of what the Syrians and Iranians are doing."
Rather, it was failed nation-building and infrastructure destruction. And an agenda of war throughout the Middle East? Still orchestrating scenarios???
Wasn't the beleagured Riverbend blogger saved by crossing the border to Syria?

It sounds like the concern for the NCAAP in Virginia is a legitimate one of access and fairness.

The concern seems to be primarily two-fold:

1. Not keeping up with
providing enough polling places --
given the record number of registrations in the state

AND
2. closing the polls too early.

Increased hours will naturally make a huge difference for those that can't get to the polls till 8 or even 9 pm. As will increased polling locales and/or more strategically places for the same.

Have you all seen this article about Obama's paternal grandmother who claims he was born in Kenya, and there are differing claims as to which Hawaiian hospital he was born in?

Gosh. Conflicting reports on the Internet. Who'da thunk it?

This is minor, though. The one you really want to be debunking is Obama's secret plan to reinstate the draft. That, and his desire to simultaneously introduce both national and international socialism. Quite a menu, only a week to go. Better get crackin'.

I haven't been able to track down the source of these claims, or whether there is any merit to it.

An interesting irony in conservative "spread the wealth angst" complaints: Having a cap gains rate lower than for earned income as conservatives like, spreads wealth in effect from wage earners to CG traders. The latter don't even do useful work after the original capitalization.

Well, hows about we wait until after the election and see if it comes out? Chances are, when nothing comes of any of this bilge, these dupes will just find something else to complain about, and all the trouble you're going to is just time wasted.

Drowning in a bowl of kool-aid

From the Palin link:

CNN contributor and Republican strategist Ed Rollins said Palin was "mishandled" during the earlier part of the campaign, and as a result, "she's become a target of a lot of ridicule."
But, he said, "She definitely is going to be the most popular Republican in this country when this thing is over."

Posted by: koreyel on October 27, 2008 at 9:52 PM | PERMALINK

Have you all seen this article about Obama's paternal grandmother who claims he was born in Kenya, and there are differing claims as to which Hawaiian hospital he was born in?

As far as the hospital thing goes, the discrepancy seems to be a translation error from English to Italian, because the reference to Obama being born in "Queen's" hospital only appears in the Italian-language Wikipedia. Everything else indicates he was born at Kapiolani Women's and Children's Hospital, which was named for -- wait for it -- Queen Kapiolani. So I'm guessing someone saw that it was named for a queen and assumed it was the same thing as Queen's Medical Center, which is named after a different Hawaiian queen (Queen Emma, wife of Kamehameha).

There's a persistent rumor about Obama's paternal grandmother claiming he was born in Kenya, but no one has managed to produce a transcript or any other kind of supporting evidence that she ever said such a thing, and an anti-Obama blogger found his published birth announcement in a 1961 Honolulu newspaper, so it's bogus. So that one you can chalk up to internet rumor with no supporting evidence at all.

I live in NC and I posted about this last week. Since that time I have received a sample ballot and it's NOT as confusing as I imagined, and my wife early-voted today and told me the poll workers were explicit in their instructions that you vote for the PResident separately when handing out the ballot, and again before accepting it for counting.

Granted, that attention and explanation will not be consistent, and will be much more difficult on Nov 4, but after my initial panic attack, I have calmed considerably.

I'll early-vote tomorrow and follow up.

Posted by: Mr Furious on October 27, 2008 at 11:40 PM | PERMALINK

Let me second the comments of Mr. Furious.

The NC ballot could be better but when i went to early vote, the poll workers did a nice job.

They had two signs posted informing voters that voting a straight party ticket would not cast a vote for president and that the presidential race had to be voted individually.

In addition, the poll workers verbally informed each voter of the same information when they escorted the voter to the machine.

A better ballot would be better, but given the ballot, that is a pretty good effort.

Totally OT: Sarah Palin came to Salem, Virginia, last night and "spoke" to around 15,000 supporters. A week ago Obama spoke to around 6,500 supporters in Roanoke.

I'd just like to point out that Salem is the same town that was famously duped into allowing Borat to mangle the National Anthem before a rodeo. [Remember: "President Bush will drink the blood of Iraqi children!"]

Duped again.

Do you think that Obama is going to win because the Republicans have such a bad candidate?
Why did John McCain make his final argument against Obama... coal?
That's his closing argument? William Ayers, Rev. Wright, spreading the wealth, Born Alive, meeting dictators without preconditions, etc. all have to take a back seat so that McCain can go to Colorado and New Mexico to talk about coal? Does this more or less explain why he's going to get his clock cleaned Tuesday?
