TUESDAY'S CAMPAIGN ROUND-UP....Today's installment of campaign-related news items that wouldn't generate a post of their own, but may be of interest to political observers.

* We knew we'd see a Jeremiah Wright ad eventually, and the right-wing National Republican Trust PAC is responsible for one.

* It looks like Virginia Republicans aren't confident in McCain's chances: "A phony flier, purporting to be from the Virginia Board of Elections, is circulating in the African-American-heavy Hampton Roads region of the state, falsely informing people that, because of expected high turnout, Democrats should vote on November 5th. The election is November 4th."

* The DNC is "taking out a $10 million line of credit to split equally between the House and Senate campaign committees" to help maximize their gains in congressional elections.

* Early voting is helping Obama in Florida and Ohio.

* The RNC is starting to worry, at least a little, about West Virginia.

* In Florida, a Suffolk Poll shows Obama leading McCain by five, 49% to 44%, while Rasmussen shows Obama up by four, 51% to 47%.

* In Ohio, Rasmussen shows Obama leading McCain by four, 49% to 45%, while SurveyUSA shows Obama leading by the exact same margin.

* In Colorado, Rasmussen shows Obama leading McCain by four, 50% to 46%.

* In Virginia, Rasmussen shows Obama leading McCain by four, 51% to 47%.

* In Missouri, Rasmussen shows Obama leading McCain by one, 48% to 47%.

* In North Carolina, Rasmussen shows McCain leading Obama by one, 49% to 48%.

* In New Hampshire, a Marist poll shows Obama leading McCain by five, 50% to 45%.

* In Iowa, a Marist poll shows Obama leading McCain by 10, 52% to 42%.

* In Arizona, Rasmussen shows McCain leading Obama by five, 51% to 46%.

* Pew Research Center shows Obama leading McCain nationally by 16, 52% to 36%.

"Pew Research Center shows Obama leading McCain nationally by 16, 52% to 36%."

Gawd.

The Pew Research poll is no outlier, either. It is the first poll that accurately examines the "already voted" trends. Obama voters are desperate for change and will vote in ever greater numbers. For the GOP, there is simply no good reason to vote for McCain. He would further the disaster and slow the inevitable reorganization of a faltering party. It looks like the severe right wing may be calving off anyway. They should write in Huckabee.

Why isn't deliberate voter suppression by disinformation as well as intimidation considered a federal offense? Is anything more fundamental to a democracy? These types of crimes should be vigorously pursued and decades of no-parole federal prison time should be mandatory punishments--then we'd see this kind of crap come to an end.

"A phony flier, purporting to be from the Virginia Board of Elections, is circulating in the African-American-heavy Hampton Roads region of the state, falsely informing people that, because of expected high turnout, Democrats should vote on November 5th. The election is November 4th."

- This is seriously like 3 miles accross the bay from the largest naval base in the world in Norfolk. I used to reside at the base and almost the entire population of Hampton Roads is related to the military in some way, from sailors to the people who support the base.

This is low for even republicans. Whoever is responsible for this non-sense surely knows they are targeting the military and the military support.

They don't really believe that misinformation about voting dates is going to fly in this year of all years, do they?

The Pew Research poll is no outlier, either.
And they called the 2004 vote almost right on the nose. Posted by: Steve LaBonne on October 28, 2008 at 12:27 PM | PERMALINK

The RNC is starting to worry, at least a little, about West Virginia.

It doesn't help that Bush is trying to eliminate rules that prevent coal companies from dumping scree from strip mining into streams and rivers. I'm not sure an advertising campaign is going to placate fishermen.

And another thing, now that I'm on my soapbox, the states should not be allowed to determine who can and who can't vote for FEDERAL office. Right now, certain states do not let people who have served prison sentences vote for president and congressional seats, unless they get special approval from governors (that's so Rethuglican white collar crims don't lose their rights). This is disgraceful and, in my view, unConstitutional. So much election reform needs to done. Will the Dems do that once they control the gov't? I fear not but hope so.

I think most people missed this last night at the end of Larry King Live. Susan Molinari was giving her final assessment of McCain's chances and she started to name off the states where he would be competitive and probably win. One of the states mentioned was Michigan. I think McCain's tent pulled up stakes in Michigin about two weeks ago and one poll shows Obama leading by 22%. With strategists like that it's no wonder the GOP is going down in flames.

Oh, and there's this: The Palin McCain rift (today she is a "Whack Job") shows me that the GOP's own internals mirror Pew's. There is no way their own polling data supports anything NEAR a victory. They have abandoned ship. Thanks to a few Zogby and AP dweebs playing "let's pretend," most pundits have missed this fact. But let's make this tremendous landslide. VOTE.

"A phony flier, purporting to be from the Virginia Board of Elections...is November 4th."

Finally, evidence of election fraud! Will the DOJ please investigate?

The DNC is "taking out a $10 million line of credit to split equally between the House and Senate campaign committees" to help maximize their gains in congressional elections.

This should be illegal, no matter which party is doing it. If you can't raise the money during the campaign period, you can't use it during the campaign period. Period.

*spit takes*

Pew Poll at 16%!!! Wow. I thought it could not possibly be so, but commentors above pointing out the veracity of this poll both reassure and intrigue me. Please do let it be true....

Why is the GOP targeting West Virginia? That's completely nonsensical. I don't know of any significant down-ticket races in the state that they could be trying to support. Supposedly they're also spending money in Montana. They do realize that if MT and WV are in doubt they've already lost, right? What's the point of trying to limit the margin of defeat? An L is an L.

If I were running their operation and I held some belief that McCain had a chance, I would only be campaigning in VA, CO, OH, and FL. He's unlikely to win any Kerry states and he's also going to lose in NM and IA, so if he loses any of those, he's done.

It really looks like they're just trying to avoid embarrassment.

The RNC is starting to worry, at least a little, about West Virginia?

They wouldn't be in this mess if they worried just a bit more:

Worried that there really IS a God and that He doesn't appreciate being pulled out every 4 years as a campaign tool.

Worried a bit more about constituents and Party loyalists for whom they should be working and a little less worry for the rich fat cats for whom they really do work. Those rich fats cats will very comfortably survive the economy, the election, and the implosion of the GOP. Taking care of themselves is what fat cats do best.

Maybe had the GOP worried a bit more about their nation and the foundational principles of their employment and worried a little less about their wallets, privilaged lives, and living off the taxpayer like vultures instead of public servants.

Worrying now is a palid whimper to the roar the GOP should have given the current administration on a lot of things, for many years.

The Democrats should be worried as well.

The GOP should be looked on as a valuable lesson to Democrats about letting power and money take over for sound judgement and wisdom. Democrats are no more immune to corruption than the GOP and we, the leftists need to watch and ensure our own party isn't in this same hole come 4 or 8 years down the road for all the same reasons.

Respectfully.

If you can't raise the money during the campaign period, you can't use it during the campaign period. Period.

Why? What difference does it make when you raise the money? Insofar as you are beholden to your donors, you're beholden to them no matter when they write you the check.

Early voting is helping Obama in Florida and Ohio.

The Florida legislature (dominated by Republicans) did what they could to discourage early voting by reducing the number of available polls in each county and reducing the number of hours the polls are open. I voted today, and waited in line for almost an hour before getting in to vote, and I got there about 30 minutes before the poll opened. When I finished, the line extended down to the end of the shopping center the poll was located in. This situation obviously makes it very difficult for elderly or working people.

Well, at least the RNC has taken note of that Marist Poll in Iowa. They are even using it in ads telling folks about Obama leading in the Marxist Poll in Iowa.

No, but, they might be.

Maddow was so funny last night--I loved the clip wherein McCain was speaking at a rally of nuclear safety --

I couldn't believe it--

he was mocking Obama's concerns re: the same

"...Blah, Blah, Blah.." and the crowd cheered!

Unbelievably sad and funny.
*******************************************
I hope SNL or some others like the daily show pick up on this one!

It reminded me so much of the cartoon character Homer Simpson who does the exact same thing in at least one episode about nuclear safety--he too pulled the 'blah, blah, blah' line. Someone needs to find that Simpsons clip and juxtapose next to McCain.

*********************************************
The differences between the T.V. cartoon and the real like McCain doing this should be duly noted, however.

The "Simpson" episode was clearly meant as satire. Homer didn't know any better. Homer is a very simple but nonetheless well-meaning, guy with a big heart. When the errors of his ways are pointed out to him, he usually comes around. At least he tries to--especially when his values are in his face.

McCain on the other hand? Uh, not so sure.

But the Democratics registered MICKEY MOUSE!!! That's MUCH WORSE than telling people the voting date has been changed.

If you can't see that, you're a communist.

Pretty much every black person I encounter knows damn well what day is Election Day. On 11/4, they're helping elect the first black president. I can't imagine anyone thinking if it's too busy on Tuesday that it's Ok to come back on Wednesday.

Their little trick might work in another demographic. But with blacks?

More proof the Repub party is in the hands of morons.
