THE INDIGNITY OF WORRYING ABOUT ARIZONA.... I got an email this morning from Time magazine, noting the latest Time/CNN poll numbers from "battleground" states. The list included Ohio, Pennsylvania, Nevada, North Carolina ... and Arizona.

Oh, the indignity of it all. (For the record, the poll shows McCain leading in his home state by seven, 53% to 46%.)

The recent polls showing a fairly competitive contest in Arizona apparently aren't a fluke. Greg Sargent reported late yesterday that the McCain campaign and the Republican National Committee are now concerned enough about the state to start using robocalls. Here's the script:

"I'm calling for John McCain and the RNC because Barack Obama is so dangerously inexperienced, his running mate Joe Biden just said, he invites a major international crisis that he will be unprepared to handle alone.

"If Democrats win full control of government, they will want to give civil rights to terrorists and talk unconditionally to dictators and state sponsors of terror. Barack Obama and his Democratic allies lack the experience and judgment to lead America. This call was paid for by the Republican National Committee and authorized by McCain-Palin 2008."

The substance of the message is, of course, blisteringly stupid. But under the circumstances, that's not really the point.

As Greg explained, "The call means Republicans are sinking resources into a state that obviously should have been a complete lock for McCain, with time fast running out. Simply extraordinary."

McCain will return to Arizona early next week, to vote and to prepare for an Election Night event. Any chance he might hold a rally before Tuesday, just in case?

I wonder the cost of a robocall? I read of spammers paying fractions of a penny for each of millions of e-mails. I assume with an initial investment of time it's all automated. Does a campaign of robo-calls really constitute a significant expenditure in the grand scheme of McCain's money outlays?

I was traveling to AZ in late September 2008. The woman next to me noted in our conversation, not to be surprised if AZ goes Democratic. So this change in allegiance is not a fluke.

McCain has abandoned his state, AZ during this campaign just as Lieberman has abandoned My state CT.

I'd like to see the country follow Indiana's example and outlaw robocalls entirely. If you want to call someone and bother them at home, you should have the decency to hire a human being to do it for you.

I agree with NonyNony completely. Robocalls are selling something and thus should be included in the "No Call" list.

May McCain lose in his home state, just as Gore lost in his.

The problem is that political calls are immune from the "No Call" list. When Richard Shelby promised "This time we mean it", he really didn't.

Said McCain: Oh sh*t. The surge is working.

All talk. No walk.

No one will delay the World Series with an infomercial when I'm president."

But while a candidate, McCain will interrupt your life with robocall whenever he feels like it.

I agree with this, actually. Political speech should be given the broadest latitude in our society, moreso than people trying to sell me satellite TVs, supplemental health insurance, home security systems, or ways to fix my credit score.

But robocalls should be banned even for political speech. Pay the money to get a person to read your spiel for you or don't do it. There's Constitutional protections for free speech, but there's no Constitutional protections for free speech for tape machines.

There has been a demographic change in AZ that has increased the number of Dems. But Reps have not been happy with McCain. He won the primary with less than 50% of the vote even though all the candidates except Huckabee had already dropped out - and Huckabee was broke by then.

On "being tested" ...

Little George Junior was "tested" shortly after he took office, even before Nine Eleven ™ (a trademark of the Republican Party). The Chinese forced down a US spy plane, losing one of their own pilots in the encounter, and then held the crewmen for weeks.

For some reason, the flight crew failed to destroy their classified material and equipment, as is standard procedure when they're about to fall into enemy hands. So - the Chinese got it all. Mr Bush/Cheney's negotiation team basically conceded everything to the Chinese. The best they were able to do is get the plane back - after approximately a year, and in small, easily-handled crates. Reportedly, Mr, Bush's big concern was whether or not the American crewmen had access to Bibles.

Every US President is tested. Flyboy McCain will be tested. As an angry old geezer who seems at least 50 years out of date, how well will he do?

Nony's got it. Ban the robocall, not the political speech.

Somewhat OT, did you guys know that business phone numbers can't be registered on the DNC list? I'm getting pestered to death here.

It is amazing that McCain thinks Arizonians are this dumb. Listening to the message, you have to conclude he believes the electorate is comprised largely of gullible morons that would buy into this nonsense.

Rove was a lot better at this than his protege.

McCain has got them right where he wants them, my friends (creepy grin).

More half-truths from McCain: Obama would only give civil rights to terrorists if they are legally registered as foreign terrorists with the Dept. of Immigration.

Posted by: AJB on October 30, 2008 at 11:02 AM | PERMALINK

A black man is going to give your civil rights to a terrorists ?

I don't believe them using the term 'civil rights' is coincidence and since they have spent months calling Obama a terrorist, the are essentially saying, "The black man is going to take the white mans rights."

My parents have lived in Arizona for about 15 years now. My dad listens to Rush Limbaugh every day. And they HATE John McCain. I doubt they would vote for Obama, but I don't think they're going to vote for McCain, either.

FWIW.

Are North Dakota and Missouri and Indiana off the 'battleground state' list?

Do they think Florida is securely Dem now?
