ENSIGN JOINS THE CLUB.... As a rule, leading Republican officials have demonstrated far better message discipline than they've shown lately.

Republican Sen. John Ensign says Sarah Palin is not experienced enough to be president and John McCain's presidential campaign "completely mishandled" her early days on the ticket.

The Nevada senator made the comments in a television interview in which he also criticized Democratic nominee Barack Obama's readiness for the job. Ensign then strayed far from the GOP's standard description of its vice presidential pick's qualifications.

Specifically, Ensign told the Las Vegas news program NewsONE, "I do not think that Barack Obama or her are experienced enough to be president of the United States -- neither one of them."

Bashing Obama is expected, but Ensign went ahead and strayed from the party talking points, slamming Palin at the same time.

Ensign is, of course, the chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, which ostensibly puts him in a position where he'd be familiar with the party's national message.

Last week, McCain chatted with Don Imus, and expressed frustration about Republicans who've questioned Palin's qualifications. "What's their problem?" McCain asked. "I think she is the most qualified of any that has run recently for vice president."

McCain's fellow Republicans clearly disagree. Ensign joins former Secretary of State Lawrence Eagleburger, former Reagan Chief of Staff Ken Duberstein, Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.), former Secretary of State Colin Powell, and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney on the list of high-profile Republicans expressing concerns about Palin's readiness for national office in the campaign's closing weeks.

The differences between Obama and McCain are becoming larger every day. While Obama was giving Wolf Blitzer a detailed list of priorities for 2009, McCain was telling Charlie Gibson he would have "lots" of Dems in his cabinet. And he's not worried about choosing his cabinet, because he's known a lot of people for 25 years. Apparently none were more qualified than Palin. At this point, I think McCain's experience is subject to more question than Obama's. What exactly has he accomplished, learned, or even thought about?

"What's their problem?" McCain asked.

mccain needs to stop staring at sarah's ass long enough to listen to the dribble coming out of her mouth. that is, unless he's hard of hearing.

Oh thank goodness -- When I saw the headline I thought perhaps Ensign was pregnant.

Palin continues to serve McCain well as distraction, symbol and scapegoat for an utterly incompetent and mishandled campaign. We won't need to examine any black box to discover who flew this bullshit laden campaign plane into the ocean.

It's hard to figure what Ensign's playing at on this one. Is he, perhaps, beating down Palin's chances at a McCain victory so she can move into Stevens' spot---just in case he wins and then has to resign?

I believe these comments are an organized effort at blaming McCain's loss on Palin, and thereby strangling her 2012 presidential campaign before it gets off the ground.

I can't remember another US presidential candidate who used sarcasm as his chief rhetorical device. Sarcasm is an emotionally stunted kind of humor, and both McCain and Palin use it all the time.

If you think this is fun, just wait until Wednesday, when the real GOP bloodletting begins.

Steve,

I don't think you can call Ensign one of the "club". He certainly doesn't think much of Obama, and at the end of the day he's really just protecting his own ass. He's aligning himself now on the center right-side of the party formerly known as the GOP.

At some point elected officials may need to consider their own careers. If the ship is sinking, and you can restore some credibility, if you constituents demand it (apparently S.C. Lindsey Graham has no worries), you jump!

Well, it's basically true. Neither Obama nor Palin is qualified to be president. But only ONE of them is actually running for president, and the OTHER ONE of them has actual administrative accomplishments at the local and state level, and is learning fast at the national level.

Well that is your opinion, Marler, and pretty much what we expect from you. By the way - have you gotten back to us on the Lancet study yet? Two years ago you promised us it was bullshit and you would back it up. Still waiting...

Fortunately, most sentient Americans think your opinion on this matter (and most others) is absolute bullshit.

Enjoy the wilderness.

"ONE of them has actual administrative accomplishments at the local and state level, and is learning fast at the national level."

By "accomplishments" I take you to mean abusing power. Yes, at that she has done that very well at the local and state level. God forbid she became VP, she would abuse the hell out of that too - No "learning" required.

They should just shut up on the entire issue. It doesn't work for them. But it's like they're picking a scab...
