OHIO.... The new McCain campaign memo would have benefited from a fact-checker.

Everyone knows that vote rich Ohio and Pennsylvania will be key battlegrounds for this election. Between the two: 41 electoral votes and no candidate has gotten to the White House without Ohio.

Actually, several presidents have won without Ohio. As Yglesias noted, "JFK lost Ohio in 1960, FDR lost Ohio in 1944, Grover Cleveland lost Ohio in 1892." Indeed, Cleveland won with presidency without Ohio in 1884, James Buchanan won without Ohio in 1856, Zachary Taylor won without Ohio in 1848, James K. Polk won without Ohio in 1844, Martin Van Buren won without Ohio in 1836, and John Quincy Adams won without Ohio in 1824. (I should add, by the way, that Al Gore kinda sorta won in 2000 without Ohio, too.)

What the McCain campaign meant was no Republican has won the White House without Ohio. And given the available evidence, it's a fact the McCain gang must find discouraging right about now.

In his view, Democrats don't count.

So---I guess McCain is threatening to make Ohio out as a "scary that-other-guy thing" if Ohio doesn't bow down, get its act together, and put "His Royal Imperial Deserv-ed-ness" into the White House?

STFIL, Ohio, and drive these Constitution-sliming GOPers back into the primordial ooze from whence they came!

Pre-Depression elections really don't have a lot of relevance in predicting what will happen Tuesday. And of the 19 elections since the Crash, 12 of them were blowouts so of course Ohio was likely to be on the winners side.

That leaves a pitifully small sample size of 7, with the all 3 Republican close-shave winners taking Ohio (Nixon 68, Bush 00, Bush 04), but only 3 of the 4 Dem photo-finish winners (Truman 48, JFK 60, Carter 76, Clinton 92) tallying OH in the win column.

Finally, in the simulations run at uber-stathead site fivethirtyeight.com, in the subset in which Obama loses OH, he still wins the general 81% of the time.

Barack has been a pillar of confidence, cool, and level headedness this entire campaign. McCain represents desperation, low road politics and putting self and your own personal aspirations far in front of country. There is no limit to the depths John McCain won't sink to in an effort to win this election. He gave up country first a long time ago. Schwarzenegger, an alleged racist, who's been critical of Sarah Palin and John McCain, now is being utilized as McCain's saving grace. Politics are such a joke.

i live in Ohio and only yesterday did the "obama's an appeaser" and "obama wants to raise your taxes" mailers finally show up...

i've gotten no robocalls at all...

the organization doesn't seem to be trying very hard...

on the other hand, especially considering Michigan and Pennsylvania, it's embarrassing that Ohio is even close in this election...

lots of older racists [union and otherwise] up north, and south of I-70, cept for a few college towns is THE south. Cincinnati is the DEEP south.... horrible.....
