RUBBING IT IN.... Two Canadian comics pretending to be Nicholas Sarkozy made Sarah Palin look a little foolish yesterday. Hilzoy noted the temptation to "make fun of whomever it is who screens her calls." Apparently, the Obama campaign was thinking along the same lines.
Asked by ABC News if he'd heard the prank call played on Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, Robert Gibbs, a senior adviser to Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., told reporters that he'd heard parts of it.
His response?
"I'm glad we check out our calls before we hand the phone to Barack Obama," Gibbs said.
Ouch.

Just think---somewhere in America's future, we might actually have to deal with a Palin presidency, where the terrorist nightmare scenario is a 3 a.m. call to the WH, and some prankster tells her that Russia has launched a full preemptive nuclear strike on the US.
Can I start calling her "Scary Thing" now?

Getting pranked by these guys is almost a right of passage. They get everyone.

Apparently it took many calls to finally get through to Palin. Sounds to me like Palin's staff actually did more vetting than McCain did before choosing her. Not necessarily better, but at least more.

I don't blame Palin for this one.
It does demonstrate very poor staff work by her McCain handlers. If they weren't all going to be unemployed anyway by Wednesday somebody would need to lose his job.

Social Engineering 101
I'm glad we check out our calls before we hand the phone to Barack Obama.
Exactly.
The back story here really is how basic social engineering skills enabled the penetration to the top.
Note: social engineering was how her yahoo email account got hacked too...
Having now seen two such security breeches one can only conclude:
Caribou Barbie and her handlers are either naifs or dummies.
Take your pick. But pick you must...

Just a quick editorial note: it's Nicolas Sarkozy (sans "h").

The wicked witch of the north looked EXTREMELY foolish. She abetted by her many ignorant and otherwise inane answers and coments.

How is it that the McCain handlers try to move heaven and Earth to avoid Gov. Palin facing the most innocuous questioning from a reporter (or any other citizen for that matter) but hand the phone over to any stray goofball?

Someone hit her with a stupid stick.

Could the staffers have actually colluded with the prank out of hostility toward Palin, or perhaps to use her foolishness as an excuse for McCain's likely loss of the election?

Hmm, I'm with jhm on this one: a stray phone call from Canada (don't they check caller ID?) gets through but a legitimate reporter here in the good ol' US of A can't get more than a few rehearsed minutes with her?
But the real question I have is: What is it that many women who otherwise seem to be reasonable see in this woman? Or men for that matter?

Looking forward to Sarah being "Out of Area".

i had to laugh when palin (at the beginning of the call) seemed to berate one of her staffers for handing the phone to her when the "president" was not already on the phone. as if the president of france should be happy to wait for her to arrive.....
