WHEN A GATOR LOSES HIS APPETITE.... Most college campuses are dominated right now by Obama supporters, but the New York Times had an interesting item the other day noting on-campus McCain backers -- and their apparent plight.
Most notably, the Times highlighted the University of Florida, home to one of the country's largest McCain student groups. "Gators for McCain," the piece noted, is led by Joshua Simmons, who said student volunteers stand in a central campus plaza for nine hours a day, letting students know that "this organization does exist," and that "there are students out there who support McCain."
And what is Simmons up to now? It's a funny story, actually. (via Jason Zengerle)
Less than 48 hours before Election Day, about 4,500 people gathered on the Reitz Union North Lawn to hear Sen. Joe Biden as part of the Obama campaign's final push through Florida. Biden, the Democratic vice presidential nominee, and his wife, Jill, were introduced by U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson to a Gator–chomping crowd. [...]
"I wanted to see the next vice president of the United States," said Josh Simmons, Gators for McCain chairman.
Simmons said he voted for Obama about two weeks ago.
"I've seen a different John McCain than the one I signed up to work for," he said.
Simmons said he submitted his resignation Sunday night and will no longer be chairman for the group, which has more than 1,000 members.
"I expect them to be incredibly pissed off," he said.
I think that's a safe bet.

What took him so long to resign after voting for Obama? Seems a bit odd.

So, let me get this straight---this kid does an interview hyping a McCain campus organization, having already voted Obama, and waits nearly two full weeks before "tendering his resignation" from the organization? Sounds more like a McCainiac flip-flop to me; I'll bet he voted McCain, and now claims to be an Obama supporter "just to be on the winning team."
UF student ReThugs can get nasty. They might graqb this kid and throw him to the gators---or maybe they'll just cook him and eat him. After all, it is a known fact that Loser ReThugs always resort to their primordial cannibalistic tendencies....

Don't be surprised if we start seeing a lot of this from cable news hosts. I got dibs on Joe Scarborough being the first.

Either he was an unspeakable idiot all the way back a year ago, or he's full of shit now, riding that bandwagon for all its worth.
I don't really care. I want them demoralized.

The campaign hasn't given rationale people much room.

I say let's enjoy the irony here rather than take this young man down. First, we don't really know the full order of things, and second, he is young and might not be as experienced as we are with "stickin' it to the Man."
I think his turn around deserves a round of applause. Not resigning until just before the election means he probably left everyone in the lurch and now they can't fill his leadership vacuum quickly enough to make a difference. Sounds like a great plan!
Nice work, Josh. Welcome to The Party!

Well, he join up with David Brooks, Peggy Noonan and David Frum, other demoralized Republicans.

I dunno, rather than being pissed off I would bet a lot of those thousand members might be just a teensy bit relieved because they had jumped ship first and just hadn't mentioned it yet.

So refreshing to hear of a young man willing to grow. Willing to open his mind and his ears and not just shut out new information. He has character.

I am just wondering what all those rethugs are worried about that we would have 'socialism'... Haven't they realized that we have been 'redistributing wealth' for tha e last 8 years? Just OUR middleclass $$ went to the richest of the rich! Now that (hopefully) the flow will be staunched and even reversed, it is called 'Socialism'. WHAT WAS IT THE LAST 8 YEARS??? Trickle-down- socialism doesn't work! It hasn't worked under Reagan, and it DEFINITELY hasn't worked under Bush/Cheney/McSame!
TIME FOR CHANGE! VOTE OBAMA '08!

i just got off the phone with my 18-year-old niece.
she is not only voting for obama but she is volunteering to do work as a poll worker. having done it myself, i can say unequivocally -- poll workers are unsung american heroes.
and the part that i savor -- my niece lives in a arizona. my family out there (transplants all) is voting for obama. six votes are a drop in the bucket, but what is a full bucket but a collection of drops.
just thinking about it makes me cry with joy.

Florida students are hardly the most liberal bunch in the world, but Clinton drew about 15,000 to a rally in 1992.
