COMPETING TROOPERGATE REPORTS.... Three weeks ago, an independent investigation launched by the Alaskan legislature into Sarah Palin's abuse-of-power scandal wrapped up with a fairly devastating report -- Palin violated the public trust, violated state ethics laws, and lied about it. (Soon after, Palin, driven either out of ignorance or illiteracy, said the report had cleared her of "any hint of any kind of unethical activity," which is the opposite of reality.)

Palin and the McCain campaign decided it didn't like the independent investigation, and preferred a different probe, run by Alaska's personnel board, which is made up of members who answer to Palin.

And wouldn't you know it, on the night before the election, the board sided with Palin in a hastily released report.

A report released on Monday by a state board found that Gov. Sarah Palin did not apply improper pressure to try to dismiss a state trooper who was her former brother-in-law and did not violate state ethics laws in the firing of her public safety commissioner.

The report by the Alaska Personnel Board contradicts the conclusions last month of a separate inquiry into the matter overseen by a bipartisan legislative panel. The earlier inquiry found that Ms. Palin had breached a state ethics act by pressing to have the trooper, Mike Wooten, fired.

It appears that, as far as Palin's Alaska Personnel Board is concerned, this was a he-said, she-said situation. Walt Monegan described discussions he had with members of the Palin administration about the governor's ex-brother in law, while Palin and her aides said those conversations hadn't taken place. As far as the board's investigator was concerned, he believed the aides.

Monegan said last night, "The conversations absolutely did take place. I've been a police officer for some 35 years. Aren't I supposed to tell the truth? And in this case I did, under oath to both investigators. It's not only me. There were senior members of the Department of Public Safety who got the calls, felt the pressure and knew exactly what was going on. I will always feel that there were conversations and e-mails that were intended to inappropriately use an official government position to settle a family matter."

At this point, Palin and her allies will, at a minimum, claim vindication. For others, there will probably be a temptation to conclude, "One investigation cleared Palin, one didn't, so let's just forget the whole thing."

But the bottom line remains the same: the only bipartisan, independent investigation that wasn't operated by people who answer to the governor found that she violated state ethics and violated the public trust. An 11th-hour favor to the governor doesn't change that.

At this point, it won't make a dime's worth of difference as far as the election's concerned. Tomorrow morning, she'll be Alaska's problem, not ours.

Please just send her back to Alaska today. If I never have to hear that nails on chalkboard voice again it will be to soon.

Shit! Is it too late to change my vote?

On the other hand, the collective yawn of the media at the initial (real) Troopergate report was absolutely shameful. This was the sort of thing that should have flat-out disqualified her as a legitimate candidate for public office of any sort, but they treated it like a minor blemish on her record.

And two systems of justice for the rest of us too?

One issue with this I don't think is accorded enough scrutiny. Palin's husband is alleged (accepted?) to have conducted a meeting in the Alaska Governor's offices, insisting upon the attendance of Monegan. He supposedly had a stack of paperwork at the ready, personnel records, police records, disciplinary records, incident reports, etc. All at his personal disposal as a private citizen. What the hell was he doing conducting such a meeting on government property during business hours with records he had no right to possess, many of which were confidential in nature? Palin claims he was acting as a supportive, protective husband and looking out for her personal safety. Conceding that point it doesn't excuse the timing, place or circumstances of the meeting(s). Unless he was on the state payroll and in a position permitted access to these records how is it explained or excused to anyone's satisfaction? WTF?

In the course of this ridiculous vice presidential pick by the small "c" christian (no longer to be the base) of the GOP; one good thing has come of it.
A respect and genuine admiration for the people of Alaska. Personally I became a fan of the Mudflats blog; a great juxtaposed intellectual blog especially compared to in particular Palin or Stevens and their political minions (such those on the hand picked board that have exonerated Lying Palin). I've learned that Alakans are involved and open minded and are probably going to give Palin something to come home too after election day (and Stevens hopefully will get his deserved reward as well).
I am grateful that the Palin daily grind of her nasally grating voice will now come to an end; but, I feel that Alaskans have touched many Americans from the experience.

Not that it mattered -- they buried Troopergate and let her get away with lying about the first report. Thanks, corporate media!

Various media outlets consistently leave out the facts that:

a.) the Personnel Board reports to, and can be fired by, Palin, and

b.) the Independent investigation was approved by 10 Republicans and 5 Democrats.

Those are important details. Leaving them out makes room for the McCain-Palin lie. Hopefully, it won't matter. But, at a minimum, its shoddy reporting.

It won't affect the election. However, what this accomplishes is that the complacent citizens of Alaska now should realize that they didn't solve their rampant government corruption problem when they elected Palin. They just put lipstick on it.

In two years she'll lose re-election. Much of the anti-Democratic vote is based on unrealistic fears about "socialism", "Islamism", etc. After two years of a successful Obama administration and a Democratic Congress the Democratic brand will sell a lot better in places like Alaska, and the Republican brand will appear more and more extreme.

Yeah, it has been pretty crazy listening to Palin's supporters say that no candidate in history has been savaged the way she has.

When in fact, the press spent weeks following 'troopergate' as it unfolded, then collectively yawned when it found she broke the law. Then said nothing when she lied about it.

That isn't considering that they kept passing on all her other lies with no more than a single lackluster attempt at fact-checking for each one and no follow-up when she kept repeating them.

And that for all Palin's complaints about the coverage of her $150,000 wardrobe, the press spent less time on that than they did on John Edward's haircut or Hillary Clinton's cleavage.

the corrupt result we expected. the incompetent timing, too. and the media silence, you betcha!

but now, or tomorrow, this sad woman, spawned by john mccain to spread fear and horror across our land, can find her escape in the harsh ice and long winter darkness like her soul mate... mary shelley's creature. and good riddance.

or maybe: let her keep her fancy duds, write a memoir, and go down as a throw-back, zany, romantic-comedy, a la doris day. and we'll all smile and laugh and roll our eyes about the fun of election '08 ... yeah, sure, you bet.

Right, and on NPR this am, consistent with it's repiglican bias, made zero mention of the fact that this board was appointed by, and answers too, this embodiment of evil .. mrs 666.

Posted by: stormskies on November 4, 2008 at 9:19 AM | PERMALINK

She will lose the election and should be subsequently impeached and fired as govenor of Alaska. This inquiry should continue and official charges should be brought against her. Unless this happens she will continue to be a "bright shining star" in the repubs minds and their party. Sad really.

What the personnel board wants Alaskans to believe won't matter one whittle; Palin's going home to Alaska after today, and she'll be a one-term Governazi. As an aside, I understand the wolves smell Palin's blood in the snow, and the moose are plotting an armed insurrection....

"on NPR this am, consistent with it's repiglican bias, made zero mention of the fact that this board was appointed by, and answers too"

Ditto that on the Today Show. Just a blurb saying: good news for governor Palin today that a board investigating troopergate has cleared her of any wrongdoing or ethics violations.

Good god, our media in this country sucks!

And for the Personnel Board members, some rather lovely gifts in their stockings from Nieman-Marcus, this Christmas?

John King on CNN actually used the word "overturned" to describe the relationship between this report and the last report. Shameful.

Bushlin! Such a typically Bushie way to do things! It's McBush-Bushlin, what a retch.

Posted by: Neil B on November 4, 2008 at 9:58 AM | PERMALINK

The media treatment of this is disgraceful, her refusal to take responsibility for her actions is shameful, McCain's decision to pick her was clearly outrageous -

- but low-tech cyclist is right! Tomorrow this will all be Alaska's problem! Yaaayyyyy!!!

Posted by: Basilisc on November 4, 2008 at 10:00 AM | PERMALINK

Seems to me that Palin would have been better served by releasing this report *after* the election that she is about to lose. As it is, she is going to have to deal with the fallout of all this as governor of Alaska, and most certainly not as VP-Elect.

It just goes to show how short-sighted and/or unrealistic the Palin campaign is.

Posted by: Bob Loblaw on November 4, 2008 at 10:11 AM | PERMALINK

The panel knows they would all be fired when she returns to Alaska, so why would they vote against her?

Posted by: lilybart on November 4, 2008 at 10:26 AM | PERMALINK

At this point, Palin and her allies will, at a minimum, claim vindication.

Ms Alternate Reality already did this with the first damning report.

Posted by: ckelly on November 4, 2008 at 10:30 AM | PERMALINK

A Stalinist rewite of history, enabled by a passive press. It should disgust every American. This is something for Alaskans to address immediately. She has no ethical compass at all.
