THE EYES OF THE WORLD.... I have no idea what Orrin Hatch is talking about.
Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) said Monday that the United States will "lose a lot of stature throughout the world" if Barack Obama is elected president.
Looking forward to a potential Obama administration in an interview with CNN, Hatch said, "...We're going to lose a lot of stature throughout the world because we have somebody who, though eloquent and a very nice person, who I like, who doesn't know what he's talking about."
Now, I don't usually look to Orrin Hatch for insightful political analysis, but this is especially odd. The Washington Times reported this morning that "more than 4,000 foreign journalists have been granted credentials to cover the campaign finale," because the "whole planet is obsessed with the U.S. presidential election." Do you suppose they're all captivated by John McCain?
We also know this: "Gallup Polls conducted in 73 countries from May to October 2008 reveal widespread international support for Democratic Sen. Barack Obama over Republican Sen. John McCain in the U.S. presidential election."
So why is it, exactly, that we would "lose a lot of stature throughout the world" if Americans elect a president who enjoys international popularity?
For that matter, if having a president "who doesn't know what he's talking about" undermines American leadership abroad, shouldn't Orrin Hatch have called for George W. Bush's resignation a long time ago?

Orrin Hatch is a partisan hack. In his "mind", R=Good, D=Bad. And that's as deep as it gets, as evidenced by his comment.

let's not lose track of the most important thing here: obama does know what he's talking about.
unlike john mccain, sarah palin, george bush, or orrin hatch.

This man is an integral part of what's wrong with this country. His election prospects I bet are no better than Lieberman's.

It must be opposite day at Hatch's house!
IN fact, we get about 90% forgiven for the last 8 years when Obama is officially elected, which is one of the big reasons I supported him,
I love my country and I love what America is supposed to be.

As a "constituent" of Hatch's let me translate: "Obama is black. Black is bad. Blacks are second-class citizens. Blacks don't know anything other than what their betters tell them."
Unfortunately, DA, Hatch has a strong following here in UT who think that his words come straight from above. He isn't up for re-election this year, but rest assured that he won't face any real opposition in four years.
Oh, and he also thinks that Ted Stevens is an honest and upright man. This is why I hate living in UT sometimes. . .

Shorter Orin Hatch: If he would deny his Muslim faith and convert to Mormonism, and I think we could get along.
What a putz.

Can you believe he said that? That we have stature to lose?!?

Maybe he just means Republicans will lose a lot of stature in comparison to a truly eloquent and intelligent president like Barack Obama. :-)

More proof that Orrin Hatch, like the GOP as a whole, has jumped the shark. They wouldn't recognize reality if it bit them in the ass - and I'm hoping that happens today.

Orrin Hatch, member in good standing of the "Get off my lawn!!" club. Exclaimed as he weed-eats around the lawn jockey at the end of his drive.

Beware! Eloquence ahead! Why yes, Orrin, I will be crying crocodile tears when I don't get my daily serving of Bushisms. But thanks to Hatch we'll still have a bountiful helping of lame brain.
Posted by: lou on November 4, 2008 at 10:26 AM | PERMALINK
Hatch also said “John is coming up very fast. You'll notice in most of these polls Barack Obama is less than 50 percent.”
Uh, no. THREE polls have shown Obama below 50% in the last week, and Obama was +5, +5, and +7 in those.
Hatch's mouth: sewer for rent.

Orrin Hatch is a SUPREME political hack, bought-and-paid-for creature of the Utah LDS, an opportunistic slimeball who deserves precisely no respect.
I've absolutely had it with these motherfuckers. I wish we could defeat them all. Hatch has done a great deal to permanently corrupt American ideals. Far as I'm concerned, he's a fucking quisling, just like all his other GOP pals.

There comes a redeemer
and he slowly too fades away
There follows a wagon behind him
that's loaded with clay
and the seeds that were silent
all burst into bloom and decay
The night comes so quiet
and it's close on the heels of the day
Wake up to find out
that you are the eyes of the world
but the heart has its beaches
its homeland and thoughts of its own
Wake now, discover that you
are the song that the morning brings
but the heart has its seasons
its evenings and songs of its own

Something tells me the republican party is not going to let go of the alter-reality they've tried shoving down our throats for the past 10 years.
Upside down backwards crazy world where you literally have to conclude the opposite of what a republican tells you.
It is bizarre and frightening to think that some of these people are elected to office more than once.

Actually, this makes sense to me, and it's a simple observation:
Orrin Hatch lives in a different world from the "Reality-Based" community. In his world (let's call it Wingnut World) George W. Bush has been a great president, the Iraq war has made us safer, poor people getting mortgages caused the financial meltdown, etc, etc.
Perhaps we should have some pity upon them, as many are being forced to take the red pill.

Nothing out of the ordinary for Orrin. He's the master of double speak. It's not about saying something rational or truthful -- it's about attacking your opponent's greatest strengths.
The trouble with Orrin's comment is that it doesn't pass the laugh test. Do you think Orrin really cares if he looks like an idiot here, or is he so zealous in his partisanship that he doesn't recognize the idiocy of his comment?

Senator Hatch is not in tune with Australian public opinion.
The Sydney Morning Herald reports that the Herald/Neilsen Poll (one of the major polls here) "found that 73% of all voters want the Democrat senator from Illinois to become the next president of the US".

Why is it odd to have a Republican not know what they are talking about? It pretty much is the definition of a Republican these days.

Here's my audition for the Obama White House speechwriting team:
"Well, obviously Senator Hatch is fighting the good fight for his party's nominee, and I don't take heated campaign rhetoric personally at this stage of the game. While I can't agree with Senator Hatch's assessment, I want to stress that he's a very eloquent and nice person, who I like, and also he kicks puppies."

When interviewed by recently by Rachel Maddow, Obama spoke about why he won't tear into the Republican Party and get involved in calling them names -- he says he'll have to work with them in the future and doesn't want to create unnecessary division.
Orrin wants to keep the battle lines drawn the way they have been and make sure Repubs will continue to use petty hatred to keep Washington uncooperative. Our future is just a game to Orrin. It's why he's such a big part of the problem.

Well into the 20th century, Mormons believed that blacks were black because they sinned and that if they prayed real hard then God would turn them white.
That's where Hatch is coming from, we're going to have a sinner in the White House. Nobody should pay any attention to anyone from Utah.

I've been fascinated by Orrin Hatch for years. He's a brilliant man, and quite warm, but without an ounce of integrity.
He has this incredible talent for standing up in front of the world with an appearance of utter sincerity, as he calmly and confidently explains how everyone knows that 2+2=3.

Prissy Pants Hatch is no different than Deseret's US Rep Hansen, who made a ton of money on sweetheart land and condo deals involving the Winter Olympics - Now, Hansen comes in holier than thou in House hearings into the economic crises.
Would love to see both of them load their Handcarts in DC and make the trek to Deseretville and stay there, permanently. Perhaps the current Governor, will send out search parties eastward on I-80 to search for them on their Handcart Trek.

Agree with the poster who pointed out that Hatch's remarks are really about Obama being black. In the Mormon faith, there is a life previous to this one. Being born with a dark skin is a sign that you were a "less worthy" warrior in the "pre-life" struggle between good and evil.
A Black person would have to redeem themselves in this life by becoming a good Mormon.
So...black skin equals "soul that needs to work harder to redeem itself"...something along those lines.
Hatch has spoken.

Another way to redeem oneself, is to have the skills to play running back or wide out at BYU.
Best memory of Deseret was a bar, long gone, on State - Owner was a UofU grad - There were white toilet seats on the walls, with blue crepe circling them.

Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) said Monday that the United States will "lose a lot of stature throughout the world" if Barack Obama is elected president.
And invading Iraq will be a cakewalk because we'll be greeted as liberators; we'll find the WMD and leave in a few months.
And cutting taxes actually leads to increased revenues and a balanced budget.
And markets are self-regulating.
And drilling offshore and in Alaska is the way to energy independence.
And Terry Schiavo is alive and Katrina something no one could have predicted.

Racists often speak in terms of an alternate universe where natural selection and evolution don't exist. And assign preferences to God. And curse perceived enemies. And had religious visions when their tax exempt status is under review.
Hatch is a nitwit. Always was. Probably always will be. This is the problem with religious fundamentalists. They are all dangerous because they believe they are the chosen ones and everyone else are just Devil props.
