GOP LOSES A REGION.... The six states that make up New England, as of this morning, had a total of one Republican member of the U.S. House. Tonight, he lost.

U.S. Representative Christopher Shays of Connecticut, has lost his bid for an 11th term in Congress. "I have called Jim Himes to congratulate him on being the next member of congress from the fourth congressional district." An emotional Shays added, "I have always known that you can have great elections when you win and great elections when you lose." He thanked the over 800 volunteers who worked with his campaign.

Shays, who is the last New England Republican in the House of Representatives, lost to former Greenwich businessman Jim Himes. With 40 percent of votes counted, Himes won 60 percent to 39 percent.

Himes is a former Goldman Sachs vice president who now runs Northeast operations at Enterprise Community Partners, an affordable housing operation.
