TWO FAMILIES.... We learned fairly early last night that Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R) lost her re-election bid in North Carolina. In fact, it wasn't especially close, with Democrat Kay Hagan defeating Dole by nine points, 53% to 44%.
It's worth noting, then, that next year will be the first time in 45 years that there isn't someone with the last name Dole or Bush holding elected office in Washington America.
Just thought I'd mention it.
Update: I meant, the country, not D.C. George W. Bush was in office from '96 to '00, but in Texas.

Um...Bob Dole resigned from the Senate in 1996. George W. Bush was inaugurated president in 2001; Libby Dole took office as senator in 2003.
It looks to me very much like there was neither a Dole nor a Bush in elected office in Washington from 1996 to 2001. Am I missing something?

Good to see the comments are back on. Actually it's been 56 years: Prescott Bush was first elected to the Senate in 1952, and served until 1962. He overlapped with Bob Dole, who was first elected to the House in 1960, and moved to the Senate in 1968.

... and John is right. But you could make it work by adding "or a governor".

And when was the last time a Republican Presidential ticket won without either a Nixon or Bush on the ticket?
That's right: Hoover in 1928

I am just glad that I wont have to listen to Dole and her hive minded talking points.

So happy to see that the Red Cross made emergency air drops to Liddy.
But, as a born and bred Kansan, so happy to see the classy Kansas connection to President-Elect Obama. Haven't had a decent Kansan connection in the upper branches since Alf Landon's daughter.

First time in my life that a Dole or a Bush hasn't been in either state-wide or national elective office. Wow. Last night really was sea-changing.

Kennedys have held elective office since 1947.

This year was the first presidential race since 1972 that didn't have a Bush or Dole on the Republican ticket.

Oh, come on. It's a big country, and those names aren't all that rare.
Here in Hennepin County (Minneapolis and environs), I voted for a district court judge ("elected office") named Philip D. Bush. He won.

Actually (and unfortunately), George W. Bush was Governor of Texas for 6 years, from 1994-2000. He defeated Ann Richards in 1994. Upon being reelected in 1998, he almost immediately began positioning himself for the Presidential race.
