NO RUSH ON BUSH'S MEMOIR.... The president hasn't said he has plans to write a book after he leaves office, but there's a certain expectation that a memoir will be published.
That is, if Bush can find a publisher.
In less than three months, President-elect Barack Obama will take office and the Bush administration will belong to history. With the president reportedly interested in writing about his White House years, publishers have a suggestion:
Take your time.
"If I were advising President Bush, given how the public feels about him right now, I think patience would probably be something that I would encourage," says Paul Bogaards, executive director of publicity for Alfred A. Knopf, which in 2004 released Bill Clinton's million-selling "My Life."
How discouraging is the market for Bush? Regnery doesn't seem particularly interested.
"Certainly the longer he waits, the better," Marji Ross, president and publisher of the conservative Regnery Publishing, said. "There's a pent-up frustration among conservatives that will focus their attention on a Barack Obama presidency and lead them to buy a lot of books about Barack Obama. But that's not the kind of emotion that anyone is going to use to turn to reading a memoir by a conservative president."
I'm not even sure time will heal the wound. The vast majority of the nation, and even a strong number of Republicans, is anxious to see the end of this reign of error. The idea of shelling out $29.95 to read about the president's reflection on eight years that most of us will prefer to forget, doesn't exactly scream, "best seller."

The audio book version read by the author would be a special treat.

He and Dan Rather can co-author a book dealing with Bush and TANG. Should be a good read, particularly the parts dealing with the redacting and disappearing of files, back when he was serving.
I'd pay money for that.
Bush as president? Not interested. It would just be a litany of lies.

Not to mention that the idea of words on paper from the most rigid, unreflective, incurious, detached, on-vacation president ever is ludicrous at its core. What would his ghost-writer manage to say?

I don't know, Jimmy Carter's books usually sold well and he was demonized when he left office...

Really you dont think BUsh's book would sell? I have the exact opposite reaction. Who wouldnt want to read a book by the biggest screw up in american political history? its the howard stern rule, the people who hate him will read it to find out what the hell he was thinking and the 6 people who love him will read it to model themselves after him. I cant imagine this book not selling huge. That is if it is a real book about what went on. It its just a non-creative revision then it fails. If Bush really lays it out though it would be a huge seller.

I think he should team up with Palin and write a book.
Maybe a comic book about a goat and a moose.

A Dubya autobiography (even ghostwritten) would be the ultimate cure for insomnia. While in office he was rigid about keeping to talking points, and utterly incapable of saying a single interesting thing. Aside from the usual wingnut viewpoint I can't imagine any insight he might even try to have about anything. He's not about to dish about his administration, as that would make him look bad.
Once he's out of power, he'll have nothing to sell but his failure as a president. Who would want that?

Maybe W cold write about the nearly 3 years that he has spent on vacation:

I think it would be better to learn about whatever the hell Cheney has been up to over the last 8 years. But I doubt that he'll tell us.

Oops, should have been _could_ not cold. Duh.

I think he'd be better off initially focusing on getting a spot on Dancing With the Stars or, better yet, The Surreal Life.

I have no idea how Mr Benen can write this stuff without laughing himself into a coma.

Given his ability to assemble a complete sentence, he may get a chapter written sometime in the next 15 years.

Call me old-fashioned, but I think he should try reading a book longer than "My Pet Goat" before writing one.
And he may be tied up with lawyers once insiders start dishing the dirt to Sy Hersh, and Obama's team get a look at all the classified documents. There was a heck of a lot of bad stuff in Bush's first term that we only found out a couple of years later; there's a heck of a lot of bad stuff in the second term that they've tried to stonewall (DoJ, warrantless wiretapping, Bush/Cheney/Rove's role in the Plame affair, torture memos). As a professor of constitutional law, as well as a politician, Obama might well feel that legal sanctions are appropriate and necessary if he finds compelling evidence of blatant criminality.

Great googly moogly! Though it does deprive me of the snark I was going to bring...
Bush's minions like to say that history will vindicate him. Fat chance -- it'll be hard for history to vindicate Bush when everyone would just as soon forget the SOB.

Bush? "Write" a "book"?
Hee hee. Good one!

Maybe Bill Ayers is available to write it for him.

Of course Bush's ghost writer could come up with a great book. Just title it IN OVER MY HEAD, How I Went from Humility to Humiliation. Most presidential memoirs are unreadable, but one that 'fessed up would be tolerable and Bush has so much to repent.

Seymour Hersh tells us there are dozens of people who have told him they'll be calling with all the stuff they haven't dared go public with, come January 20th 2009.
He'll write the book on the Bush presidency.

"Teh Reel Tru Laf of Dick Cheney--2000-2008" by GWB is a title I'd consider buying.

I would be really cool if he had a biographer from day one like ancient times. Bush who was going to change the world slowly turned into the guy who hides on election day. And what clown gets to try and make Bush look good, talk about a crappy job.
Who is anyone kidding, we would wait in line to see what that idiot has to say about himself.

The only Bush "memoir" I'd want to read would be taken down by the court stenographers in the Hague.

President-elect Barack Obama will take office and the Bush administration will belong to history.
Do you think history really WANTS Bush? Maybe he can belong somewhere else (e.g., the trash heap of history).

Here is a benchmark to work with: Did Nixon write a post presidency memoir? How long did he take? How well did that sell?
Of course, W won't be writing it himself.
I would love to see him lambaste Cheney in it, though :-). Then it would sell big time. "Cheney could not be contained, and it was because of him and his bullying that we ended up in Iran in the first place" ... oh if only ...

Doesn't he have to find a writer before he finds a publisher?
Posted by: Paul Camp on November 6, 2008 at 9:33 PM | PERMALINK
It's not the publisher that would have a hard job, it's the editor. Wading through that Connecticut cowboy drivel and correcting all the spelling/grammatic errors would likely result in the book coming out posthumously.

But think of all the book burnings you could have!!!
(Don't buy new copies and put money in his pocket--wait until the book hits the bargain bins and/or you can get penny copies on Amazon.)

Actually, I disagree here. Sure, I won't pay the full price for it and I will wait until I can pick it up for a more suitable price later, but reading Bush's memoirs on 8 years of utter failure cannot be anything but fascinating. I, for one, would definitely be interested in reading that kind of stuff.

Yes No Rush, for him to write his story it will only be more lies to coverup the other lies he has already told typical republican policy.

How can Bush the Lesser really reflect on anything the last 8 years? 1) I thought this guy never reflected on his past and 2) everything he's done has been classified up the wazoo. The only thing he can write about is his reading that pet goat book.
Posted by: PaulW on November 7, 2008 at 8:22 AM | PERMALINK
And you guys keep forgetting: why spend money on the bargain bins when libraries let you check out for free? (shameless library plug brought to you by the American Library Association)
One other thing for Bush: he can always use Print On Demand. Call XLibris, you doob!

Why not change it to a "How to" book and sell it through the porn sites.
"How to Screw a Nation"
