QUOTE OF THE DAY.... I really do love gems like these.
Senator Lindsey Graham, warming up a North Carolina audience for McCain, assured them that McCain would win: "[John McCain] fits North Carolina like a glove.... I'll beat Michael Phelps in swimming before Barack Obama wins North Carolina."... Graham continued, "Don't let me down, because I can't swim."
The comments came just seven days before the election. Obama won in North Carolina.

Any state with "North" in its name is communist territory.

I don't think it's entirely fair to ping Graham for something like this. (Except for its weirdness). He's out there as an advocate, albeit one with a losing cause, and he's going to put the best light he can on the situation.
The ones that I think need highlighting are not the instances of strained advocacy, but the alleged "objective" pundits. Bill Kristol, for example, who committed some real howlers in the closing days. Krauthammer, as well, and all their ilk. They're writing for the most prestigious papers in the country, and they're not supposed to be doing fiction. (Slate or Salon has a feature that collects such examples, but unfortunately treats the two types as similar.)

Considering that Republicans cannot be relied upon to state with any degree of reality what happened in the last 8 years, why would anyone in their right mind (or should that be 'left mind' since those in their 'right mind' most likely did) believe any prediction coming from the right? If Lindsey Graham predicted that the sun will come up tomorrow, I'd have to wait and verify the event independently. Of course, I live in Northeastern Pennsylvania (where the sun don't shine) where a view of the sun is very unusual this time of the year.

Those of us who supported Obama, and who live close to Charlotte NC are of course happy that our SC senator Lindsay Graham was wrong. At least one of the Carolinas voted "correctly". It was also nice to see that McCain's margin in SC was lower than that of about 10 other red states - and about the same as the margin in Arizona.
But let's not forget that the margin of victory in NC was incredibly small - if libertarian Bob Barr had not gotten 0.6 percent of the votes North Carolina might have gone for McCain. So let's celebrate but remember that Graham wasn't wrong by much regarding the North Carolina vote.
AND I guess that he's not as bad as Strom Thurmond
(he DID speak out against torture of prisoners).

I remember in the 1960s, during the Cultural Revolution, how Chinese propagandists were claiming Chairman Mao was setting world records swimming in the Yangtze River. I think Sen. Graham needs to get in touch with one of those spinmeisters; perhaps they can invent a swimming career for him.
