PALIN'S P.R. OFFENSIVE.... Christopher Orr noted that as recently as Friday, Sarah Palin told reporters that she's ready to get back to the people's business. "[E]very day is a full day here in the governor's office," Palin said. "It's gonna be busy days here just like it was busy days on the trail, being the governor full-time in addition to being a candidate. Now, of course, we get to concentrate just on one of those."

While I don't doubt that Palin is ready to focus her energies on one of the responsibilities, I'm not sure it's the one she was elected to do.

Last night, for example, was the first of a two-part interview with Fox News' Greta van Susteren, during which the Alaska governor talked about her clothes, her reported ignorance, her perspective on the political landscape, and her future plans.

Ms. Palin directed most of her media criticism at liberal bloggers, whom she twice called, "those bloggers in their parents' basement just talkin' garbage."

But she had a kind word for President-elect Barack Obama, who she said called her during the campaign to wish her luck.

"He was cool," Ms. Palin said, with almost a giggle. "He said, 'good luck, but not that much luck.'"

On the question of whether Ms. Palin will run in 2012, she answered, "This is what I always do. I'm like, O.K., God, if there is an open door for me somewhere, this is what I always pray, I'm like, don't let me miss the open door. Show me where the open door is. Even if it's cracked up a little bit, maybe I'll plow right on through that and maybe prematurely plow through it, but don't let me miss an open door. And if there is an open door in '12 or four years later, and if it is something that is going to be good for my family, for my state, for my nation, an opportunity for me, then I'll plow through that door."

For those keeping score, that quote included six references to an "open door," and three references to "plowing" through it. Palin, in other words, seems to have given the next presidential race quite a bit of thought.

As for "concentrating" on "being the governor full-time," Palin will appear on NBC's "Today" show this morning, will talk to CNN's Wolf Blitzer tomorrow, and will speak at the Republican Governors Conference in Miami on Thursday.

"[E]very day is a full day here in the governor's office"? Perhaps, but not for the reasons one might expect.

It is comforting that there is no hope for the Republican party in the near future.

Steve, when you're in the basement, can you hear your folks walking around upstairs? Does that distract you from blogging about reprehensible Republicans?

If the door is open, why do you need to plow through it? Are the voices in her head telling Governor Palin to plow through doors? When are the good people of Alaska going to recall this twit?

If the door is open, why do you need to plow through it?

I was wondering the exact same thing! I think the door was blown off and is now blocked by a wall of ice.

I know it would be all journalistic and everything, but could someone please ask the Guv why it takes so long for her states to count early and absentee ballots? Has anyone begun looking at Alaska's provisional ballots?

Isn't it just a bit premature to ask whether she has plans to take that Senatorial seat?

Nerds spend all their time in Mom's basement, Palin's right about that, but they're playing World of Warcraft, not engaging in liberal blogging.

Posted by: Peter on November 11, 2008 at 9:24 AM | PERMALINK

At what point does she stop and consider tending the garden and pulling the weeds just beyond the door she last plowed through?

Hell, once she gets to heaven, she'll be asking God, "Is this all there is? Show me the next door! I deserve something higher!"

To the psychologists and psychiatrists reading this, is there some diagnostic term for this kind of mental case?

Posted by: lou on November 11, 2008 at 9:25 AM | PERMALINK

My head hurts. I truly do not understand a word she says. She repeats the same words in one sentence. On a brighter note, if she does run..the other candidates will tear her apart..yipee!

After complaining that Hillary's whining doesn't help women, is Palin merely committing sabotage?

Has anybody ever seen that VH1's Behind the Music - "Grunge"?

There's an awesome part where Mudhoney are being interviewed and they say in all earnestness "Oh God, let's not talk about Courtney [Love]! Can we just not talk about her? 'Cause she just won't go away!"

I kinda feel the same way about Palin...

And exactly why is the Corporate Media continuing to 'interview' , and keep in the public awareness, this women ? Does anyone remember in '04 after Kerry and Edwards lost any of the Corporate Media having ongoing interviews with either one of them ? Especially Edwards ?

"those bloggers in their parents' basement just talkin' garbage."

One wonders whether her high-school dropout children (current count: two plus a fiance) will be comfortable living in the Palins' basement. Am sure the Palin family diet includes Cheetos galore, so they should be all right.

"He was cool," Ms. Palin said, with almost a giggle. "He said, 'good luck, but not that much luck.'"

While Obama was on the line, did Palin apologize for accusing him of spreading the rumors she now attributes to bloggers? And does she now acknowledge that everything she said about Obama was as much nonsense as she believes the things said about her were?

I'm still waiting for the Palin Adventures realitity show. Trainwreck TV is a great way to keep a person amused through the bitter cold of winter.

Also waiting for, in the more distant future, allegations of misusing state funds and property for non state relate matters. Such as trying to run for president on the people of Alaska's dime.

Palin garners these interviews for much the same reason paparazzi hang out at clubs, events and resorts catering to celebrities. Both the news networks and the photographers know they're pursuing targets rich in material people will buy. Or it's like watching a NASCAR race. Why do most people do it? They're hoping to see a fiery crash, crunching metal, debris, flaming wreckage spinning out of control. You just know Greta, Katie, Matt and Charlie jizzed their shorts at the prospect of Palin spilling some horrendously ridiculous gaffe. She renders possession of a rifle, barrel and fish pointless.

Must be really tough keeping that tight schedule, when one is the Commander-in-Chief of the Alaska National Guard. So, many missile sites to tour.

Sarah, you might want to look eastward and see all of those Poppys - It might trigger why you are holding that wreath. It is not for the Grand Opening of the new Wasila Nieman-Marcus Discount Rack.

Does that mean she's going to plow through even if its slightly ajar? Prematurely would mean its not open at all.

Posted by: John Henry on November 11, 2008 at 10:27 AM | PERMALINK

"plow" = snow plow, not a garden plow.

Now that we have that straight, remember that Sarah was billed as THE energy expert.

"Oil and coal? Of course, it's a fungible commodity and they don't flag, you know, the molecules, where it's going and where it's not. But in the sense of the Congress today, they know that there are very, very hungry domestic markets that need that oil first. So, I believe that what Congress is going to do, also, is not to allow the export bans to such a degree that it's Americans that get stuck to holding the bag without the energy source that is produced here, pumped here. It's got to flow into our domestic markets first."
--Sarah Palin, billed by John McCain as the nation's foremost expert on energy, Grand Rapids, Michigan, Sept. 17, 2008

Alaskans, if I were you, I'd start working real hard at recalling Sarah.

You betcha!

For those who missed it last time, dig this reading of minutes from a Sarah Palin Council meeting in Wasilla, May 1996. Quotes may be approximate:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMocEINn-E8

"Gee, Linda, don'tcha gotcher own pen"?

"I mean, it's new business about old business, I don't know"

She's tired of getting refreshments.

Eddie had about half "them Chips Ahoys"

and so on.

If the door is open, why do you need to plow through it?

Maybe she means that if there is the tiniest opportunity available to her, she'll exploit the crap out of it?

You know, like the past few months?

I think Kristol is whispering in her ear.

I'm sure she'll have a long and productive political career just like all of the losing vice presidential candidates in recent history:

John Edwards
Joe Lieberman
Dan Quayle
Thomas Eagleton
Admiral Stockdale
Lloyd Bentsen

Who does she think she is? FDR? Ha!

Yeah, but just remember, right-wing arguments don't have to make any sense whatsoever. As long as lightning doesn't literally strike them after saying something, the gullible will believe it.

doubtful, none of those people had, like, God on their side, and also too, you have to think about seizing opportunity and gittin' her done as we say in Alaska and also taking advantage of opportunity and seeing when opportunity knocks too.

Tangentially related, I liked this quote from today's ridiculously pro-Palin WSJ op-ed:

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122637257625116453.html

We are asked to believe that Mrs. Palin was not ready for a national campaign. On what evidence from any part of this election are we to conclude that anyone on the McCain campaign team was ready for a national campaign?

It is remarkable how frequently what is best for the people aligns with what is in a politician's best interest. Almost uncanny, really.

Palin's situation reminds me of the movie, Being There, in which Peter Sellers plays an English gardener who is displaced from his lifetime occupation as the gardener to a wealthy British man and gains national/international acclaim for his wisdom on foreign and domestic affairs, although he only answers questions with gardening metaphors, and has no idea how they apply to larger matters. The people who are seeking his advice project his answers into whatever they are interested in and actually come up with their own answers. They use him as an Oracle because they think they do not have the wisdom to originate their own ideas.

Listening to Sarah Palin, I have the feeling that she is speaking without thought and is in total reaction to what is being projected on her and about her. I am no psychologist, but I think her behavior indicates some serious childhood or youthful trauma. And, that trauma is being visited upon her children. As someone else mentioned, she has 2 children who have dropped out of school, and prospective son-in-law who is also out of school and 2 daughters who have been taken from school for an extended period of time during the VP campaign. That is a pretty strong record of parental neglect, in my mind. OTOH, many of our greatest historical and present icons are the product of broken and abusive homes, so there is hope that she is, in fact, without knowing it, raising some future heroes. We can only hope.

I think we would be well advised to ignore Sarah Palin and look for some truly qualified representatives for future leadership roles. The media does seem transfixed by her "person-ality" and fail to see the damage their obsession with her could do. Oh well, all is perfect and what we learn from this episode will serve us well if we recognize our own wisdom and don't look elsewhere. We are the ones we have been waiting for. Let's wait no longer,
peace,
st john

Maybe she means the door to Neiman Marcus, at, like 8:59 in the morning, right before they open, and you want to shove right past the security guard and be the first one in. Especially if you have someone else's creditcard.

Being from Texas and intimately knowing a religious nut, I guarantee that their little hearts are skipping beats and their eyes welling up over the quotes above. Picture Palin as an angel with face shining toward heaven and both hands folded over her heart saying: "I'm just so tuned into Jesus that I'm just like waitin for his guidance in this matter and praying that I have the spiritual fortitude to wait for that guidance and not plow through in my natural desires." That's what they are hearing and eating up with a big spoon. Really. She'll win that group with the 91% approval rating she already has and then some. Just hope that Obama does so well that 2012 is a non-election.
