ROVE ISN'T IMPRESSED.... Karl Rove chatted with the New York Times' Deborah Solomon, and the man the president affectionately called "Turd Blossom" still seems underwhelmed by Barack Obama's victory last week.

DS: Do you see the election results as a repudiation of your politics?

KR: Our new president-elect won one and a half points more than George W. Bush won in 2004, and he did so, in great respect, by adopting the methods of the Bush campaign and conducting a vast army of persuasion to identify and get out the vote.

DS: But what about your great dream of creating a permanent Republican governing majority in Washington?

KR: I never said permanent. Durable.

I get the sense that Rove might be ... what's the word ... jealous. Obama managed to get 365 electoral votes, 79 more than Bush got in 2004. What's more, Obama's 52.6% of the popular vote is the highest of any candidate of either party in 20 years, and the highest for a non-incumbent in 56 years. It's a little tough to downplay.

As for Rove's vision for the Republican governing majority, it was neither "permanent" nor "durable." Republicans controlled everything, executed their policy agenda, failed miserably, and got crushed in successive elections -- one of which featured Rove's guarantee of GOP gains.

Don't go away mad, Karl, just go away.

That's right Karl, Go back to the rock that you live under turd blossom. Good riddance to hate and fear, turd blossom. Hello hope, trust, inclusion, and the elimination of torture.I can't believe that I am celebrating the elimination of torture as a component of our country's policies...

Hubris.

It'll get you every time.

Poor Karl.

Posted by: Cervantes on November 15, 2008 at 8:07 AM | PERMALINK

Karl has lost the math. One and a half points off 52.6% is over 50%. Since Gore got more votes, and I think Nader got about 3%, the Blossom is disassembling. That said, I would agree that Bush had a great GOTV and 50 state strategy. Of course, it helps when you own the airwaves and are therefore unencumbered by reality.

OK, need coffee. He did say 2004, not 2000.

Posted by: Danp on November 15, 2008 at 8:15 AM | PERMALINK

Is Rove equally dismissive that Ronald Reagan won against Carter with 1.9% less than Obama?

Posted by: toowearyforoutrage on November 15, 2008 at 8:22 AM | PERMALINK

the Blossom is disassembling

Well, turds do eventually disintegrate when it gets hot enough.

America was hijacked and may soon be returned to the people. Along with praying that the Obama team can salavage the wreck they've inherited from these out-going, self-serving, pirates. We must make certain that Rove, Cheney, Bush, and co. are all held accountable for war crimes, contempt of congress, warantless wire-tapping, illegal firing of justices, "out-ing" Valerie Plame, and several other criminal offenses that would have them all serving time unless Bush has his way with "pardons." Urge Obama and the Congress to act on the investigations of Representatives Waxman and Kucinich.

Actually, the percentage from 20 years ago that Steve is referring to is George Bush the elder in 1988 with 53.37% of the popular vote (just slightly ahead of Obama's 52.63%). And actually, strictly speaking, Bush the elder was not the 'incumbent'; he was the Vice President. The largest percentage prior to Obama for someone who did not hold national office was, as Steve also alluded to, Dwight Eisenhower's 55.18% in 1952. The all time champion in this regard was Senator Warren Harding with 60.32% in 1920.

(Percentages from Dave Leip's Atlas of US Presidential Elections.)

Karl sends out a resume:

"But if [Palin] wants to run for president she's gonna have to get somebody to move to Anchorage, Alaska and help her take her game to another level," he said smiling.

I think that Rove and the Republicans are setting up the ultimate spin - if you look at it the right way (no pun intended) they did not lose the election. Nothing has changed, and the Ship of State is still in their hands.

I am only afraid when that does not work, they will next talk about how the election was stolen, by the media (already a trope), the Communists (rearing its head) and the International Jewish Bankers (heard on On Point).

The demagogues (or should that be republigogues?) are still on the loose.

Don't go away mad, Karl, just go away.

Actually, go away and die the death of 4197 paper cuts (one for each KIA in Iraq), then burn in hell untill the end of eternity.

Karl Rove is a genius but the kind who blows up the rocket on the pad before the launch. He delivered the presidency to the least capable man in modern American history, and he did so without considering the ultimate cost to his grand design. His strategy had too many pieces on a chessboard less rectilinear than kaleidoscopic.

Had all the constituent parts of his coalition remained static, had history not lurched in unexpected ways, had technology and demographics remained stable, THEN Karl Rove would have won. But we live in a world much more complex than boy geniuses can conjure.

Posted by: walt on November 15, 2008 at 8:44 AM | PERMALINK

It is important to note that, campaign to the contrary, McCain was seen as the most "Democrat" by the voters who kept Obama's victories from being even more lop-sided. And Rove has permanently scarred the GOP over the majority of its body. The party may not survive. Rove reverting to form is exactly the pill the GOP needs to be put out of its misery--delusion, disparagement, and dysfunction, this is the Rove prescription to fix everything--including elections (which the GOP may or may not have ever won).

Posted by: Sparko on November 15, 2008 at 8:51 AM | PERMALINK

Why pay any attention to what Rove says? He brings to mind Mary McCarthy's line about Lillian Hellman-- "Every word she writes is a lie, including and and the." Just stop writing about him, it's pointless.

Posted by: MattF on November 15, 2008 at 8:59 AM | PERMALINK

Let's call Turdblossom by his actual name, Shithead. Absolutely the American people voted regarding the deplorable economy that Bush has us in. God bless Obama for even wanting this job after Rove and Shrub have pillaged our country.

Posted by: Mag7 on November 15, 2008 at 9:06 AM | PERMALINK

I agree with MattF. Both Rove and Palin deserve the silent treatment.

Posted by: jen f on November 15, 2008 at 9:07 AM | PERMALINK

For wealthy hacks like Rove, it doesn't matter if his party's policies make life more miserable for the American people. For most voters policies matter.

Posted by: bakho on November 15, 2008 at 9:10 AM | PERMALINK

"...without considering the ultimate cost to his grand design."

Wasn't his grand design to:

1) Ruin the American government to the point where it would collapse.

2) A 'New America' would be re-born, modeled on the 'Gilded Age' and the Cleveland regime?

If so, he got the first part done.
However, step 2 may be headed a different direction than he intended.

Posted by: Buford on November 15, 2008 at 9:45 AM | PERMALINK

What we have here is the Rove math, which is as accurate today as it was in 2006.

Here are some real numbers.

First let's ignore the 1% of noise that third party candidates gather and just look at Democrats vs. Republicans.

Let's compare Bush votes vs. Kerry votes and Obama votes vs. McCain votes.

As of this a.m. Obama has 66,744,472 vs. McCain 58,272,729. That comes out to 53.39% vs. 46.61%. That's a delta of 6.78%.

In 2004, Bush got 62,040,610 vs. Kerry 59,028,444. That comes out to 51.24% vs. 48.76%, a delta of 2.49%.

Subtract 2.49 from 6.78, and you have an increase of 4.2%, a far cry from the 1.5, Rove is claiming.

Divide 6.78 by 2.49, and Obama's margin is 2.7 times Bush's margin.

Here are some more interesting numbers.

Let's compare Obama in 2008 to Bush 2000, which is a far more fair comparison. Bush got 50,456,002. Obama has 66,744,472.

That's a 33% increase over his candidate at the beginning of the first term.

Rove's math will always be math from another dimension. His delusional dimension.

KR: I never said permanent. Durable.

Mr. Rove, I know Durable. Durable is a friend of mine. The Republican Party, Sir, is not Durable. It is Monkey Dung.

*sucker-punches Karl Rove with a nine-iron as he goes away mad....

Posted by: Steve W. on November 15, 2008 at 10:35 AM | PERMALINK

Rove failed because we were very lucky.
1) George Allen said "Macaca" and the Dems in Montana nominated Tester. If either of things hadn't happened, the Senate would have remained Republican and there would have been no investigation into the use of the criminal law to steal elections. They almost got away with imprisoning Don Siegleman - he would have been the first.
2) Katrina happened. If the storm had hit a hundred miles to the east, Bush's aura of invincibility wouldn't have been damaged.
3) The financial crisis hit at the end of September. If it had hit at the end of October, Obama would have lost the election.

Without all of these, Rove would have been a hero and we would be well on our way to living in a one-party state.

Yes, Karl did have his day in the sun, and the turd did blossom upon our beloved America as explosive diarrhea, soiling our constitution, our civil discourse, and our sense of democratic decency!

Thanks for these specific memories Turdman:

- outing a CIA agent who was monitoring rogue states and nuclear proliferation

- robo calls that stir racial and homophobic hate for political gain

- the Spieglman case

- firing US Attorneys to achieve a one-party rule here in the good ol'USA

- conflict of interest and lack of honest disclosures to the McCain campaign

- and no doubt a myriad more malfeasant acts upon our bodypolitik

Thanks again Karl the-no-one-would-play-with-you-when-you-were-young Turdblossom! -Kevo

p.s. The Turd was always last to be picked for the neighborhood teams when he was allowed to join in.

I know Bush's penchant for belittling nicknames has been gone over many times in the past, but I always marvel at what it says about Bush that he gave his most important adviser such an insulting nickname, and even more at what it says about Rove that he put up with it.

Still, I have to admit that the nickname suits him quite well.

Posted by: N.Wells on November 15, 2008 at 10:58 AM | PERMALINK

Kevo, I think you failed to mention the orchestration of media propaganda to falsely go to war in Iraq. Let's not forget, it was Rove that, just days after 9/11, said the attacks gave the Bush Administration a "blank" check. This turd isn't/wasn't just some geeky numbers guy, he was an integral part of the Bush/Cheney policy team.

Karl Rove, you deserve to roast in the 7th circle of hell.

Posted by: Palinoscopy on November 15, 2008 at 11:50 AM | PERMALINK

"Republicans controlled everything, executed their policy agenda, failed miserably, and got crushed in successive elections "

Now, watch Dems do the exact same thing.

We're just exchanging right wing crazy for left wing crazy. It's the same kind of crazy.

This must be what confused Solomon:

>

Ethan Wallison, GOP Looks to Bush's Grass Roots for Help in 06, Roll Call (11/29/04)

Because, in his defense (sorry, I just threw up a little in my mouth there), Rove did say what he said he said:

>

As I went through LEXIS/NEXIS, what I found is that "permanent Republican majority" is -- prepare to be surprised -- largely a MEDIA CONSTRUCTION.

Our "liberal media" concocted the PRM idea for the 04 campaign. Because, you know, they're so liberal. The first use of the term I found in LEXIS/NEXIS was a reference by Lamar Alexander to what needed to be done after Reagan's second term to continue building the p.r.m.

And as for Solomon -- what has she proved in the past few years if not for her incompetence?

[For some reason the pasted text did not appear. Try again.]

This must be what confused Solomon:

"Karl's vision has been a permanent Republican majority," said one top GOP strategist who is close to Rove. "They're very close now structurally to having the capability to [solidify the majority] for a very long time."

(Ethan Wallison, GOP Looks to Bush's Grass Roots for Help in 06, Roll Call (11/29/04))

Because, in his defense (sorry, I just threw up a little in my mouth there), Rove did say what he said he said:

MR. RUSSERT: You have said that you--your ultimate goal is a permanent Republican majority. What does that mean?

MR. ROVE: Well, first of all, there are no permanent majorities in American politics. They last for about 20 or 30 or 40 or, in the case of the Roosevelt coalition, 50 or 60 years and then they disappear. But would I like to see the Republican Party be the dominant party for whatever time history gives it the chance to be? You bet.

(Meet the Press, Nov. 7, 2004)

As I went through LEXIS/NEXIS, what I found is that "permanent Republican majority" is -- prepare to be surprised -- largely a MEDIA CONSTRUCTION.

I'm waiting to hear what Rove has to say about the GOP's loss of educated suburban voters, whose rejection of Palin's "real America" hard-right populism gave Obama his winning margins in formerly red states (Florida, Virginia, North Carolina, Colorado, Ohio, Indiana, the Omaha congressional district in Nebraska).

A lot has been said about minority and youth voters. But what really turned this election was the revolt of the smarts against the stupids.

Posted by: allbetsareoff on November 15, 2008 at 1:13 PM | PERMALINK

And the Obama victory was accomplished without pandering to the basest fears of those with a cowardly nature.

Rove did a hell of a job. He managed to get that schmuck re-elected. That's practically miraculous.

Posted by: Tom on November 15, 2008 at 2:59 PM | PERMALINK

My question is why was he even the guy they interviewed in the first place? He's the past, the Obama team is the future. There must have been a bunch of guys related to the Obama campaign or the DNC that would have been much more interesting and relevant than Rove.
