THURSDAY'S CAMPAIGN ROUND-UP....Today's installment of campaign-related news items that wouldn't generate a post of their own, but may be of interest to political observers.
* The statewide recount in Minnesota is off to a good start for Al Franken. With 18% of the ballots recounted, Norm Coleman's lead went from 215 to 174, a net gain of 41 for Franken.
* On a related note, a Minnesota judge agreed with Franken's request for access to "rosters of disqualified absentee voters ... to determine if they were properly rejected in the counting of ballots."
* Rep. Tom Cole (R-Okla.) intended to fight to stay on as chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, but he withdrew unexpectedly yesterday. Rep. Pete Sessions of Texas will replace him.
* Mike Huckabee will be campaigning promoting his new book in Iowa today.
* Delaware's Governor-elect Jack Markell (D) will take the oath of office at 12:01 a.m. on Jan. 20, 2009, so that he can name Vice President-elect Joe Biden's replacement to the Senate before the Obama/Biden inauguration in D.C.

Is 12:01 a.m. somehow more on the 20th than 12:00 a.m.?

Steve You forgot to mention Michell Bachmann denying she called on the media to investigate anti-American congressman, calling it an "urban legend".

Kind of sounds as if new Gov. Markell will be making old Gov. Minner Delaware's next senator.

re: the Delaware governor's inauguration, this would be a clear indication to me that Markell plans to appoint outgoing governor Ruth Ann Minner, who has said she will not appoint herself. That would explain all of the circumstances, including Biden's delay-to-the-last-minute. I'm surprised the linked news story did not mention the possibility. Has she ruled it out? Last I heard, she was one of the possibilities.

Mike Huckabee is starting his campaign at a real disadvantage. His book is pretty much about trashing his rivals from what I've heard, and that kind of bad feeling has a tendency to come back to haunt a fella eventually.
Good one, Mike. ;)

Assuming that the 18% already counted is representative, that puts Frankin on pace for a potential net gain of 228 votes. That would put him 12 over Coleman.

Usually the only time governors work that late is when they're refusing to grant clemency to someone about to be snuffed.

* Mike Huckabee will be campaigning promoting his new book in Iowa today.
There was a Democrat who started running for president the moment he lost in 2004 and tried to stay hot in the spotlight and in his party's heart for four straight unrelenting years.
Didn't work out so great.
I wonder if he or Palin will start feeling kind of stupid / desperate first.
